When should i replace airport?

MY airport approximately 12 years old does not hold a devices. Devices do not automatically detect.  I need to access setting, choose network, select several time and hold before it catches or connects.  It's like trying to hang a heavy item to a wall with krazy glue with object going against gravity.

It sounds like it might be time to replace your airport device. If you purchase one of the new 5th generation airport extreme devices you'll get better wifi coverage as the newer devices have upgraded antennas and transmit a much stronger signal.

  • When should I replace my battery ?

Just wondering when the battery should be replaced. I have noticed when its fully charged i get at the most 5 hours where when I bought it I was getting 7 hours.

    According to Apple:
When your battery no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs, you may choose to replace it. If your notebook came with a built-in battery, you should have the battery replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
I would add that if the battery status indictor shows that the battery requires service, that evaluation may be necessary by an Apple Authorized Service Provider. More information here.

  • When should I replace the battery?

I've head my macbook for about 26 months now, I downloaded coconut battery after I realized that my full charge isn't nearly what it used to be. I found out that my battery health is around 50%, since the warranty is over, should I buy a new battery?

At this point Apple isn't going to provide you with a new one - 50% capacity after 2 years is pretty darn good. So should you buy a new battery? Yes, if you aren't satisfied with how long your battery lasts, go ahead. I generally buy a new one after 14-18 months.

  • Isopropyl Alcohol got under the screen, should I replace it?

I was cleaning my commuter yesterday with Isopropyl Alcohol as one of my mom's co-wokers said it was the way to clean he screen. After this happened I read that constant contact causes an LCD screen to become brittle to the extent it cracks. When should I replace my computer? When it shows sign of cracking or now?

Ok, you used Isopropyl Alcohol on the screen but it hasn't cracked.
But you got some under the screen, meaning you used too much.
Just wait for it to dry, it will eventually.
Alcohol breaks up the human oils that creates smudges on the screen, your supposed to tab a little on a cloth and then wipe the oil away, then use a new clean spot and repeat, removing the oil onto the cloth as the alcohol evaporates fast.
No liquid is to get insdie the machine, especially the built in keyboard.

My MacBook Pro 13" won't turn on 90% of the time I try to get it running, and when it does turn on, even on a charger, it shuts down if I stop using it for 2+ seconds and it won't turn back on. Should I replace the battery?  It doesn't hold a charge either...

    EmadJamal,
the battery won’t melt because of long connection to the AC charger, although that has the potential of reducing the battery’s life.
Do you have access to a second 60 W AC charger to test with your MacBook Pro, or access to a second 13-inch MacBook Pro against which your AC charger could be tested?

Am replacing airport extreme with Time Machine and want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow leopard. Am told I should manually back up into T Machine before OS update but set up utility won't allow anything with OS below 10.5 and I'm 10.4.11. What to do?

I think you mean you are replacing your Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule. Time Machine is software integrated into OS X 10.5 & 10.6 used to automatically backup a system to an external HD. Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme that has a hard disk integrated into it that can be used for storage or  as a Time Machine backup drive.
Because you are currently on Tiger 10.4.x you can backup to a external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Having a backup is very wise before doing any major system update. After  you have created the backup and have successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard you can still use the external HD for many things. The strategy I'd recommend is to use the new Time Capsule as your Time Machine backup and then use the external HD as backup using SuperDuper or CCC. Redundant backups is wise because backups can (and do) fail too! In addition both SD and CCC are bootable clones, this is useful in that if your internal HD crashes you can boot from a cloned drive and continue working until the internal HD is replaced.
Below are some links to some articles from MacWorld, I would recommend reading them where you find a common theme, redundant backups. Backup Plan I, Backup Plan II & Backup Plan III.

  • Replacement airport card-not available

Apparently the airport card on my new ( 2 weeks old) MBPro failed. One minutes I was on line, wirelessly, then next ... nothing.
I know that Airport was working, because I immediately fired up my 'old' G4 iBook, and was immediately connected via Airport.
On the MBPro, even after re-starting/repairing permissions, etc., the Airport card did not show up in the System Profile.
I returned it to the Apple Authorized dealer; he checked it out, concluded that the card had gone bad. Ordered a replacement, and was told by Apple that they were 'not available'.
I called Applecare, who also told me that they were not available, and that they didn't know when they would be. The rep assigned a case number, 'escalated' the problem, said they'd get back to me within two days.
Is it not unreasonable to expect that Apple is still shipping MBPro's that they do have a source for a replace Airport card? Any idea what their problem is?
How long should I wait before asking for a replacement MBPro, if they can't fix mine right away?
    Thanks,
    Hal

    <<<Re airport cards, two items:
Yesterday, my new MBPro suddenly stopped 'seeing' it's Airport connection.>>
This a 'Christmas' story, with a happy (for now) ending.
Recall, my airport connection suddenly disappeared. After some troubleshooting,
which seemed to confirm that it was indeed gone, I took it back to the Apple
Reseller I had bought it from. They confirmed the diagnosis, that the airport
card was seated properly, but airport wasn't working.
They had no other card to try, so I left the computer: they ordered a card,
then called and told me Apple didn't have any in stock! that they had no idea
how long it might be before one came in!
    Amazing.
I called Applecare, and after some discussion, they escalated the case -- they
promised to get back to me within two days.
Today, two days later, we talked: still no 17" MBPro Airport cards in their
system. They agreed that Apple were still making this model, that somebody ...
somewhere ... undoubtedly had come airport cards, but that their supply system
didn't. They promised to call me the 26th.
In the meantime, I had run across this on the Apple MBPro Support Forum:
"I've had a similar problem in the past but it only dealt with the Airport
unavailability. I quickly resolved the issue by doing the following:
    PMU RESET
    1. Turn off computer.
    2. Remove battery and unplug a/c power.
    3. Hold power button down for 5 seconds.
    4. Replace battery and a/c adapter and restart computer.
It's basically just a power management reset, for some reason it helps your
computer locate and identify drivers. I don't know how it works exactly, but I
do know it worked for me. give it a try and let us know.'
Though I sent this to the vender yesterday, for some reason they didn't try it.
So that I could at least have the use of the computer over the holidays, I went
out today, and picked it up, brought it home, and tried the above. And guess
    what! Success!
When the computer re-started, there was the airport connect!
I 'suppose' that pulling the battery, re-set -- something? Any ideas what
happened, and why this 'fix' worked? I don't want to look 'gift horses' in the
mouth --- I"m glad it worked, but was curious if anyone had an idea what
happened to make it 'disappear', and why the 'cure' worked?
    Happy Holidays,
    Hal

  • My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet".How can I change ip address?

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • Should I replace the HD?

as mentioned in a former topic, I had a severe crash after installing SL.
Everybody advised me to change the HD, although every tool I took proved it to be o.k....
Since I reinstalled Leopard (not SL), everything seems to be fine, except using the migration assistant, which does not seem to work, so I could not prove if my usual stuff (i.e. Logic studio/CS4) runs properly.
Should I replace the HD? Does the HD still cause problems?
    Any help?

I don't disagree with most of what you say but a few things might be worth considering.
AFAIK, all modern ATA drives use some form of low level error correction & detection, typically CRC, & automatically map out blocks that fail that test after some number of retries. This occurs on all normal reads of physical blocks & is independent of the host computer.
Utilities like TTP at one point (& possibly still today) supplemented this by performing tests that in effect artificially reduce the number of retries to a very low number on the theory that the drive will allow "weak" blocks (those that take several retries to pass error correction tests) to continue to be used until they fail, causing data loss. These "weak" blocks would then be mapped out in some way by the utility. IMO, the value of this is debatable because in effect it assumes that a third party vendor knows more about preventing data loss than the manufacturer of the drive. It also can map out blocks that have no real problems since this kind of "soft" error (failed CRC on a single read) occurs routinely in modern very high density drives.
Absent this kind of utility overruling the disks own checks & mapping out what might be perfectly good blocks, it is sometimes useful to check how many spare blocks have been mapped in & just as importantly how many remain because this tells you something about a suspect drive's continuing reliability. This is where I see vendor utilities and/or SMART Utility for the Mac being of some value. However, since most drives' built-in SMART systems monitor the same thing, I don't think most users need to worry about this … at least for internal drives for which SMART monitoring is supported by the OS.
BTW, by "increasing frequency" of bad blocks, what I meant was something I have observed in the past: when the bad block count suddenly starts growing, it is usually a sign of impending drive failure. Usually this is because the drive's platter has shed magnetic media, perhaps because of a head crash, & the debris are getting trapped between the head & platter & gouging out still more media. Again, if SMART monitoring is available for the drive, it should detect this.

  • My internet continually disconnects.  When I added my airport express, I had to call Verizon (my provider) and have them "bridge" my modem.  Ever since, my connection constantly disconnects and puts up the message "Could not find a PPPoE server".

Any ideas?  I probably have something wrong in my computer settings.

You should restore your modem to router condition and set the Airport Express to 'Bridge Mode'. A full explanation and the method of doing this is here:

  • When should I buy?

I am thinking about buying a new 13" Macbook Pro this summer. However, I leave to study abroad in August and don't want to bring my new computer abroad (so I won't even be using it from August to December). I'm wondering if I should wait to buy a new computer when I get back in December. I either buy one now, get to use my fun, new computer for 2 months, and get a free iPod touch with the student deal, OR I buy in December, and maybe by then there will be new updates to the Macbook Pro. Should I buy now or wait? Getting it now + free iPod vs. waiting and possibly buying a better/faster computer?

On this discussion board it is against the rules to speculate on when Apple will replace products. There are other sites that will speculate about that - macrumors does that.
It depends what is important to you. How badly do you want to get the free iTouch, and how important is it to you to wait for the next newer model, and how important it is to you to keep your old computer for your study abroad trip? Ultimately, what is most important to you?
There is also insurance available to purchase (Safeware), which might protect you from the laptop being stolen (you would have to check with the different ones and what they have to offer).
Oh well, those are just some things for you to consider in your decision making process.

Base station error, air port utility was unable to find my airport device. Why does it say this when it recognizes my airport on the computer? Yellow light has been on

On the older version of the AE you can still use older airport utility.
But once you load the new one you cannot easily go back.. you can load an older 5.6 version though.. instructions below.
For 6.3 you need to run ipv6 local link.
    see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

Mac OS X will not connect to wifi, airport is broken, will connect to internet with ethernet cord. Is there an accessory I can buy to replace airport so I don't have to use ethernet cord? Please help!!

Since the MacBook Pro currently works, you should put it next to the iMac and compare the network settings for AirPort in System Preferences Network pane Advanced. Also, if you want to start off with the default network settings, you can use Location drop down menu and select +Edit Locations+. Then click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up that new location.
On System Preferences Network pane, AirPort should appear at the top of the list (in the sidebar). To change the service order, click on the gear icon and select +Set Service Order+.
Some additional tests you can try, on top of seeing if it works with (1) WEP security disabled and (2) a direct wired connection to the router.
If you get it to work with either (1) or (2), be sure to run Software Update at least two times to apply any recent updates from Apple. See if that makes any difference to using AirPort with WEP back on.
    (3) Start up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
I don't know if any third-party software has been installed on the iMac at this point, but Safe Mode will start up with only the essential Apple extensions and processes running. See if it works any better in Safe Mode.
    (4) Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting with AirPort in the new account.
    (5) Connect the MacBook Pro to the router with a wired Ethernet connection. Make sure its Internet access works. On System Preferences Sharing pane, set it up for +Internet Sharing+ so that it is set to +Share your connection from Ethernet - To computers using AirPort+. On the iMac, try to connect to that wireless network and access the Internet.
That last one (5) may be a good one to try first. It would at least show that the iMac's AirPort is working - you can even set it up to use WEP. If you have any questions about using the +Internal Sharing+ feature, please ask.

  • HT4060 when should i first charge my ipad with retina?

When should i charge my new ipad with retina?

You can charge at any time. However, you should recalibrate the battery at least once per month. See link below.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
