When Skype, Songbird starts, sound is muted

Since a few weeks I have the following issue:
When launching skype, alsamixer's volumes for sound will be turned to 0%/ muted. Skype never can play the starting sound.
When setting back the sound level manually, and Skype tries to play another sound (call e.g.), it will be muted again.
Same happens with songbird, if it helps, to identify the problem.
Using: i686, alsa, pulseaudio with no ~/.asoundrc config and an Audigy 2.
Thanks in advance.

Have your tried to set the audio levels and then run as root:
alsactl store
also is you user in the audio group?
gpassword -a {username} audio

there is whirling sound when my macbook starts up

Sure! Not only your MBP dear gwforeman, everyone's does! Mine too, but without the disk in the drive. The hissing whirling sound starts sometimes at startup after the Mac's DING chime, sometimes when the MBP is up n' running and it starts in middle of nowhere. Seems something stuck in fan or MBP is protesting with a hissing sound that something is going wrong inside. Activity Monitor's report seems fine though.
No idea, what's going on.... Any buddy out there with a solution???

  • When using FaceTime, all other sounds are muted. This defeats functionality. When will this be corrected?

When using FaceTime, all other sounds are muted. This defeats functionality. When will this be corrected? Does anyone know of a "fix" for this problem? This definately is NOT a feature.

yes, that is exactly what mine did too. I noticed that something is wrong after receiving calls and did not hear anything.
It was like the IPhone did not realize that the headphone is not any longer plugged in. I m not sure weather I plugged/unplugged the headphones after this more than once but it startet working correctly.

  • I have a stuck CDR disk in my MacBook. I have tried everything and nothing works. When the computer starts it makes weird sounds and also when I try to eject it. Nothing Works! Please Help.

I have tried everything and nothing works. When the computer starts it makes weird sounds and also when I try to eject it. Nothing Works! Please Help.

I had that happen with a MacBook. It turned out that the metal case above the slot was slightly bent down.
Putting a flat blade screwdriver in the slot and gently twisting it to move the metal case up allowed it to eject. Don't put it in too far you only want to bend the case not the drive.
The case can get bent down by picking it up with your thumb pressing down on the case above the slot.

    Ok..
Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If nothing helped, since you don't hear the startup chord, make an appointment at an Apple Apple Genius Bar or take your Mac to an Apple certified repair provider.
v10.5.6 is an oudated version of Leopard.

  • When the iMac starts the apple chime does not sound

Prior to updating to Lion OS the Apple Logo would come up on the screen but the Apple starting sound or chime for a lack of a better word no longer sounds. After the upgrade to Lion it still does not make the sound. And the speakers are on as errors or other sounds can be heard.
    Just curious...

I have the same problem here! The remote doesn't work on my EarPods, and it also doesn't work with a pair of Sony earbuds that I have. I'm hoping there's a fix for this, and that we won't have to wait until the next update... I actually use my remote a lot, so this is a really annoying bug.

  • My sound is muted, and it's still blaring sound

As the title suggests, my Windows HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (I think, I'm just going on the label under my keyboard really. No idea with computer models to be honest) is having an issue where I'll plug in headphones and it'll put sound through the headphones, but still throw out sound through the speakers, something that is very annoying in a household with other people in it. And, when I try to change from the speakers to the headphones, which are working perfectly fine too, it doesn't give that option at all. And, when I have my sound muted, sound still plays on half the time. THen, there's a problem were I need to restart my computer if I close the lid for it to work.
Is this computer just so old that I need a new one already? Is it a bug? Is it something that can be easily fixed? How should I go about this problem?

Hi! I have an iPhone 4s and when I FaceTime the sound is really low. It´s really annoying. When I do phone calls it works, and on my MacBook Pro it works much better on FaceTime than on my phone. Can someone pls help to so solute this? Really need help! Thanks

This sounds like something similar to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3388112?start=105&tstart=0.
Try turning down the speak volume (System Preferences->Sound->Output->Output Volume)  or the microphone gain (System Preferences->Sound->Input->Input Volume). Do this on both sides of the call.

  • Starts up. Starting sound and apple, then shutdown again

When I turn it on, the starting sound plays, the apple and the "standard" indicator shows, and also another indicator that isn't normal. It loads a couple of seconds and then it shuts down again. What to do?
I've tried starting it in safemode and reseting SMC, but without sucsess.
Worth to mention is that I dropped the mac from a table in to a concret floor, no visual damage and it worked all good for a couple of days, and then it crashed and now it wont start!

If you have an external boot drive you can connect, try that.  Otherwise make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • When I pause the sound still continues

When I pause the sound still continues. When will I test the movie in the timeline and use the timeline buttons not break the sound along with the image , it continues until it stops , the problem is that I have very long sounds and he plays to the end.

I'm guessing that the sound is embedded in the timeline. If this is the case, then select the keyframe where the sound starts and then, in the Properties window, set the Sync property for the selected sound to "Stream".

  • Sound keeps muted, iTunes doesn't play songs

Sinds a week or two sometimes when I boot my mac my sound doesn't work. My sound keeps muted and I can't turn the volume up because it's unclickable grey.
Someone told me to do the "cmd + ctrl + n + v"-trick and that sometimes helps me but the problem keeps coming back. Also iTunes doesn't want to play my songs, it keeps stuck on 0:00.
In my sound-systempreferences everything seems okay.
    My specs are:
    -  iMac mid 2012 running OSX lion 10.7.4
    -  Processor  3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    -  Memory 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    -  Video AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

the same thing is happening to me as well since I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes. My sound beeps now in everything, from email notifications, to music. But iTunes won't play any songs that I select. Hope to get some feedback.

  • How to disable skype from starting up automaticall...

I am trying to turn off Skype from starting automatically when Windows boots up.  I went into Skype, Tools, General Tab and de-selected "Start Skype when i start Windows".  When I hit "save", the tab automatically jumps from "General" to "Advanced", and it prompts me to enter port information as to how Skype connects to the internet???
I do not want to change any of the background connection settings (ie. Ports, Proxy, etc.); I just want the ability to de-select Skype from starting when Windows boots.

Port number for incoming connections must not be empty.

  • How do I prevent Skype from starting automatically on arch linux?

there was point in the settigs "General" folder, but now i can't see it, so how should i prevent this from autostart?I don't use pulseaudio, so i have apulse - pulseaudio emulation tool to use skype without pulseaudio and have modified my skype shortcut to run with itWhen skype autostart - it doesn't use apulse so there is no sound and i have to restart it. thats annoyingAlso i don't use skype to much so i don't need it to autostart even if i had pulseaudioSo, how will i prevent it from autostart?

I know this is an old post but this is a quite common and relevant topic with which I've spent sometime and would like to drop the solution, at least for Fedora 22 under KDE. In order to avoid skype to start at startup/login (which is quite annoying and a privacy invasion) I just deleted the file /etc/prelink.conf.d/skype.conf and that was it.(let's see if this post is up in the skype forum for long ?!)

  • Skype always starts as first time setup

    Hello Skype Community,
Quite recently my skype started behaving wierd. Everytime I boot my PC skype starts (as usual). Normally it logs in automaticly, because the auto sign in option is selected however it did not.
When I logged in it looked exactly like the time when I started skype for the first time (setting up a mic, webcam and profile picture etc.). And it seems to do it EVERY time I log in to skype (and everytime my PC boots).
I assume its something with my antivirus, because the problem occured when I changed it (I moved from avast free version to Malwarebyte premium version).
Is there a way to solve it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Hidde

The behaviour in the latest Skype 7.8 version has now changed. Skype does no longer remember the last connection status. When restarted manually, it will always start with Online status, regardless what status was set when Skype was closed last time. http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Skype-forgets-last-online-status-when-signing-in/m-p/4085542#M363164 I have not yet tested how Skype behaves when set to start when Windows starts, but also the Away status might be the new "feature" of the latest Skype 7.8 version.
