When SLEEP is selected manually the fan spins at maximum speed non-stop

Hi,
I have HP Pavilion Elite HPE-180t PC, WIndows 7, Home Premioum, 64 bits.
Occasionally, I put the PC into sleep mode manually if I am finished with my work. Here are the steps I do:
1. Press Start
2. On the Shut down drop down list select Sleep
3. PC turns the fan speed up for a few seconds and then goes to sleep with the power button changing color from blue to yellow.
But once in a while on the third step the fan speed is cranked up to maximum (quite noisy), the button goes from blue to yellow, but the fan keeps running at maximum speed non-stop.
In these situations pressing any key on the keyboard doesn't affect this state i.e. the fan keeps running, and the PC is unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse input.
The only way I found to remedy this case is to press and hold down the power button until the fan stops and the PC shuts down completely.
Any suggestions on how to avoid the freeze up while going to sleep mode manually?

Hi,
I have the same motherboard in my HP e9280t.  Open up your PC and use a can of compressed air and blow the dust out of the CPU heat sink, power supply, video card and system fans.
Open up the RUN window and enter: msinfo32
If msinfo32 doesn't show the bios level then you will have to boot into computer setup and find the bios level.
Look for the bios level. Bios version 5.29 is the latest and I have been running that level for a long time without issues.

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

  • Fan spinning in maximum speed

    Hello ,
let me know , is it normal fan spinning in maximum speed continually when playing games ?
    Thanks .

Ive been doing some research on your gpu friend, ypur gpu component is not what we would consider gaming certifide, and also seeing as how your product is 4 years into its life cycle we can expect it to react the way it is now (my opinion) you may correct me if im wrong.
Anyway if at all possible delet drivers and software from system, be sure to download the newest whql drivers from AMD and also on there site the have a recomended way for you to do so, that should minize the driver store from taking on any misconfigurations from before. As a reference on the AMD site it should be along the lines of installing new drivers and deletings drivers, read through them both to be sure, hopefully it should help you out a bit but hope for best and expect the worse.
Time to put her to bed and get a new gaming campanion bro.
    Good luck.

  • Just bought a Macbook pro 2011. The Fan spins up very slowly

Hi, I just bought a new MBP 2011 2.2 GHZ i7 (15'') and I'm noticing a strange behavior and I would like to ask if this is normal.
For work I end up making very stressful compilations with GCC using all the 8 logical cores at maximum.
I notice that when I start one of these intesive workloads the temperature immediatly spikes from the levels seen during normal usage (50 C) to 90+ C degrees.
The fan doesn't kick in immediatly, but rises slowly the speed level in a gentle manner. In 7-8 seconds on heavy workloads the temperature may even reach 98 degrees at which point the CPU starts throttling (I notice the frequence decrease) and I start hearing the Fan pumping up RPMs. After few seconds the fan is at maximum speed and the temperature averages around 90 C.
This happens under OSX , but I tried also under Linux and the result is the same.
What I perceive is like if the Fan , in order to make an "elegant" sound while rising up the speed it rises slowly instead of jumping up to maximum when the temperature would call for it.
    Is this considered normal?
I already tried resetting both SMC and the PRAM. The behavior didn't change.

I am having the same problem.

  • IMac G5 fan always at maximum speed after booting into si...

IMac G5 fan always at maximum speed after booting into single-user mode in 10.4.3
    Model: 1.6GHz iMac G5 with 10.4.3
I updated my iMac to 10.4.3, then booted into single-user mode to do some cleaning at the command-line level. I know, as others have discovered, that in single-user mode, the thermal control is off, so the fan gradually increases up to maximum speed and stays there until you reboot or go into multi-user mode. Well, I have never experienced this one before, and I'm freaking out about it... I went into single-user mood one reboot after upgrading to 10.4.3, and after all the println white text lines ended, the [1] fan shot up to maximum speed in 0.35 seconds (it sounded like a high-pitched DJ record scratch during the time interval), [2] the fan stayed at maximum speed when I left single-user mode, and [3] I cannot get the fan to slow itself! I rebooted, shut down, and even tried booting off the Tiger CD, but the instant I hit the power button to turn on the iMac, the fans blast up to maximum speed. They shut down when I put the iMac to Sleep, but then they blast up again in full when it wakes up. I checked my settings in the Energy Saver preference pane, and I have the performance set to "Reduced," which is the lowest possible.
I searched to see if anyone else had this problem or if the KBase had any info, but I didn't see any. I'm thinking about erasing and installing my stuff on the iMac, even though I just did that today.
Again, this maximum speed fan problem is freaking me out. It just started when I booted into single-user mode in OS X 10.4.3. I have booted into single-user mode before (10.4.2) and have not experienced this fan issue. I repeat, the fans blast up to maximum speed after pressing the power switch to turn on the computer, so they do not even wait for the Apple logo to show up on the screen before blasting away. How can I get these fans to not do this anymore?!

for the last few months my 20" 1.8GHz Imac has been very noisy - fans seem to run constantly and noisily. It might have been when updating to Tiger but I was never sure. Today, on the advice of a chat tech, I opened the case and reset the SMU to hopefully cure another problem. I noticed that all the air vents, intake and expel ones, were all quite heavily clogged up - not blocked but clogged with dust and fluff. I cleared it away mainly by blowing but also with a hand held hoover held close by. The exposed fan still as a lot of muck on it but greatly reduced and all the vents are completely clear. Having put everything back together again the iMac has been runnning quietly all day. May have been the SMU reset but equally might just be that the computer couldn'tdraw in cool air, circulate it or expel it properly and the fans had to work overtime to cope. Worth checking if you have noisy fans running at speed constantly.

  • HT1776 Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops?

Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops? You can hear it running all night.
Appreciate any advice.I'm using Lion. Many problems started since using Lion!

The temps are a bit higher than I'd expect under normal circumstances, and too high while playing games, but what is the room temp where it is?
I def. think its a temp thing now. but why does it only raise when im playing games or watching videos online?
Games tipically press the CPU, Video Card, RAM, and everything else much harder than most apps.
It may be a Fan not working properly, or just dust buildup.
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    Report any errors it finds.

I have a Mac OS X Snow Leopard version and my fan keeps coming on. I have been away for a week so it has not been used and yet when I started it up the fan started straight away. Is there anything I can do? Please help! Thanks

Yes, look in Activity Monitor (Applications /Utilities /Activity Monitor.app) and see what it eating up all the %CPU. If anything is over 40%, post the name here to get advice or just kill it straight away with the red 'Quit' button.
If nothing is using up CPU resources, but the fans are going full blast, do an SMC reset. Read the instructions here:

    jean156,
I am a little confused, you are posting in an iMac forum however your profile only indicates you have a MacPro. While I agree a SMC reset may help please carefully read the link The hatter provided because different Mac's have a different processes for resetting the SMC.
In the mean time you may want to update your profile (Your Stuff in upper right and click Profile) and also please post in the correct forum to avoid confusion.

  • Often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive

I also have a MacPro3,1 (2009) I believe and just started experiencing similar issues as described here.
I have scheduled sleep and start cycles and often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive or I find the computer booted in to disk utility mode.
I also often loose ethernet connectivity and have to try renewing DHCP lease several times before it will finally work.
Has anyone found solutions for this. I have looked at the console errors right before shutdown and don't really see anything fishy. Here are the last couple of lines before it looks like it shutdown.

Mac Pro early 2009 is Mac Pro4,1, anyway, I think you need to boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, then select startup volume and run repair disk.
Xcode is the latest one, by the way?

  • New mac 21,5, fan run at maximum speed, + sleep down every 12 secondes

    Hi,
On a new Imac ( 2 weeks), suddenly fans run at maximum speed after you turn it on.
I tried to reset SMC as described on article TS1433 without success.
I've got another problem, when my imac sleep down, it wakes up by itself and goes to sleep every 12 seconds. If I reboot, it stay on until the next sleep down.
    Any idea ??
    Bruno

Sounds like a candidate for return. My new 21.5 has worked flawlessly 99.9% of the brief time I've had it (since early November).
The one time I had a problem with it, the fan went into hyperdrive and the noise was deafening (and I'm hard of hearing). I don't remember doing anything wild at the time. I'm not sure I even had BootCamp up with Win7 at that time.
Anyway, I turned the computer off, waited a couple of minutes and then turned it back on and it was back to quiet mode again. Never happened again (at least with me in the room).
Couldn't be happier with the computer! Besides all the OS X stuff, it runs Win 7 in BootCamp probably as well as any Windows computer and maybe even better.

  • The fan in my imac would not stop

The fan in my imac doesn't stop at all. i have updated the software to mac os 10.6.8. i have restarted but no luck wat do i do?

  • When sleeping the fans spin up to maximum

I've got a G5 here at work and when I put it to sleep, the fans turn on full blast, and stay that way until I wake it up. Any ideas?

Hi TopoTone! I'm new to the Apple Forum & have joined to glean some info about a hardware issue similar to the one you described!
Minor difference is that my G5 fails to wake up when I hit the power switch so I have to shut down! The fan maxing 1st happened once about 6 months ago for several hours then then slowed down & resumed normal condition, almost silent. Only system malfunction I've noticed recently is the desktop switching between 2 alternating images on each new startup. Also the display preferences randomly switch occasionally.
I've been unable to load Classic since the first system update after installing Tiger which is annoying but not a major issue as I run OS9.2.2 on an older G4 Power PC
I've owned this machine since January 04 & it's been rock solid since then & has only been showing signs of stress recently. I read a response to another topic which suggested gathering of dust as a possible culprit for such a problem as we are having. I can see this making sense as it would make the fan work harder. But why when the machine is sleeping?

  • My MacBook pro wont wake up from sleep. The screen is blank at all times, but I can hear the fan for 5 sec then everything stops. Please help! I don't kno what to do.

My MacBook pro is about 3 yrs old. It is a 2008 model right before the new design came out. Recently I closed it up which puts it to sleep and a couple minutes later when I opened it up the screen stayed blank but could hear the fan running but then the power clicked like it was shutting down and I could hear nothing more. My power supply is working and I have already tried resetting it. Can anyone help me? I don't live exactly near a Mac store to get help.

Before resorting to an LB change-out, try this, as it has fixed many of the "silver-key" Macbook Pros with wake-from-sleep issues:
    1) To get the computer running, do an SMC reset. Instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Your MBP model uses the first option under the subhead, "Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
    2) If you get it running, go to System Preferences > Network and select your Airport connection
    3) In the result main pane, click the "Advanced..." button.
    4) You should be looking at a window with multiple tabs at the top; the "Airport" tab (far left) should be active---if not, make it so.
    5) There is a panel showing "Prefered Networks." Use the "minus" button below that window to eliminate any networks that you don't need to access on more than a weekly basis. I'm down to two: the home Airport Extreme Base Station and the network for a museum at which I volunteer once a week.
    5) Click "OK" and close System Preferences.
Now try letting it sleep and see it if wakes up.
When this happened to my Late 2007 MBP, I used Console to read system.log and found that, on waking, the compuer was looking for the wireless network at a lodge where I'd stayed weeks earlier and miles away. Clear the morass of old networks and keeping the list short has completely cured my wake-from-sleep issues.
The steps I listed take less time to do than to read, and are within the ability even of novice Mac users.
If that doesn't work, you may need to seek professional help. If you take it to an Apple Store and they recommend a logic board replacement, ask about a "Depot Repair." Instead of replacing the logic board on-site (which will whack you to the tune of US$700-1100), they send the computer to a central Apple refurb facility that fixes whatever they find wrong for a flat fee of about US$315 (last time someone reported using the service here). Turnaround is about one working week, and people who have taken of this service have reported being very pleased with the outcome.
You don't show a geographic location. This service may not be available if you are outside North America.

  • Question about the fans spinning in the MSI GTX 980 gaming

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forums and also new to MSI. I just bought one of their 980 gtx gaming cards.
So far it seems pretty awesome. Was a little shocked when I realized that the fans on it don't even start spinning unless the card reaches at least 60 degrees. That's a really neat feature.
However, I opened the side of the case and played some games for a bit to give it a test, and I noticed that even when the fans did start, they didn't both always start. At first it was just the right one, but then the left started as well after a while.
Then a bit later, I noticed the right one was off and the left one was stopping.
Is it normal for these MSI cards to be independent of each other?
    thanks.

Frankly I didn't even bother finding out my stable clocks on stock voltage this time around and went directly to +87mV. I have a case with so-so airflow, and yet OC'ed, max load I never see temps above 72C (with 100% fan profile at 65C which is the max temp before Maxwells throttle).
