When Straightening Photo, It Becomes Out-Of-Focus

Hello.
I just discovered when I straighten a photo in editing, the entire photograph becomes out-of-focus. I do not understand this, is this just with my version of iPhoto '09? I have made a duplicate of the photo, straightened it, then quit iPhoto, and opened it back up. The photo remains blurred.
At least I can revert back to the original. Now I am exporting my photos to Adobe Bridge until I get a handle on this dilemma.
Is this widespread, or specifically my own version? It is most unusual. I have used iPhoto for years, and have not had this happen before '09.

Try this simple fix: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
*What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

Seeing odd bands when a photo is fading out...

I have a timeline with a sequence of photos in it. The photos appear instantly, and then fade out to black over about 1/3 second (using the compositing opacity).
The problem I'm having is that I just exported the master file and watched it, and when the photos fade out, I see horizontal banding that shouldn't be there. I'm inserting some screen captures of the playback of the video that shows what I see as the photo fades to black. The screen captures just show a portion of the screen, but the problem occurs across the screen. It is very noticeable as the video plays, and it occurs as each photo fades away.
What is causing this? If I go to the timeline and advance frame by frame as the photo fades away, I don't see any of this banding in the viewer. There the photos all fade away evenly as they should with no banding.

Those screen captures that show the banding are from the exported master, which I exported in ProRes 422, and played back in Quicktime Player.
If I watch the video play back in the viewer inside FCPX, I do not see the banding at all. Given that, changing the playback preference from Better Performance to High Quality isn't necessary or advisable, is it?
The still images are different sizes (because I cropped them, I guess). They are all around 550 x 825 or so. They look good in the video (I don't see pixelization like I'd expect to if they were too small).
I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting when you say "set it up with transiton in progressive and see if it works better." Are you saying to change the timeline to progressive? Is that possible at this point? As far as the transitions go, I could try a transition with each, but the instant each photo pops into view is aligned with the sound of a camera shutter, so I don't want to screw that up.
As far as the camera goes, I think the advice I found early on for my HF10s was to shoot in 1080 60i (I guess because the HF10s don't have 1080 60p) and I didn't even know that it's possible to work in a progressive project. I really don't have any idea why that might be better, but I'd like to know. If it is better, I definitely want to do it the best way.

IPod Restarts When Viewing Photos (Every 1 out of 3 times)!

When I try to view my photos (mainly doing a slide show), the IPod unit will restart. One time, the unit froze and I had to perform a manual reset. I have not seen a resolution yet in the forums. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

An Update for what it is worth, and still with no resolution. It appears that I have the auto restart issue only when I view photos and I have previously configured the slide show to turn on music using my music library on the Ipod. If I view photos and it is working ok. with the music playing in the background, and then I leave photos to go listen to my normal music library, and then I come back to viewing photos again, when I start the photo slide show at this point, this is where the Apple restart occurs. I have been able to isolate this down on both my Ipod and my wife's Ipon Nanao Special Editions. Any body else having this problem? When I turn off the background music under the photo slide show preferences, I can go on with photos all I want with no auto restart. So for now, no more back ground music in my photo slide shows.

Photos out of Focus

When I was first using iPhoto '11 I realized that while editing my photos they looked out of focus. If I went to the next photo and came back to the same photo I was just editing. The edit was complete and the photo was back in focus.
Yesterday I did the update.
Since then any photo that I do any type of editing on goes out of focus before I even do anything.
The other issues that I just started to have is the cropping tool has a mind of it's own. Also when you "flag" a photo in an album, sometimes it will show up in the flagged items and sometimes it won't.
My "trash" bin has no number next to it. But if I click on the trash it has over 600 pictures that I haven't put in there?
Does anybody know how to fix the focus issue? I am a photographer. I can't worry about all of my photo's becoming out of focus if I open them on iphoto.

I've noticed the same thing. When editing in full screen mode everything looks soft. I have to zoom in to confirm focus (even a little zoom shows the actual sharpness more accurately). They probably are using an alias image to speed up previews of global edits, but it is annoying.

Out of focus photos after burning dvd.

I am using Magic iDVD in iDVD 08. Have created a movie with photos imported from iPhoto. All appears to be well when I preview the movie prior to burning it (i.e. photos are clear and sharp, and burning process appears to go as it should). But when I view the burned DVD all the photos are quite out of focus. This occurs whether I watch the DVD on my iMac or TV. Am using Philips DVD-R discs. Have tried different encoding settings with no difference in results.

It looks to me like the flash fired for the shot, but the camera also kept the shutter open for a fairly long time to reach optimum exposure. Can you check and see how long the exposure was? It appears that the bright, flashed parts of the photo are sharp, so I don't think it's an optical problem. The flash froze some of the image, but handheld camera shake created the blurring. Try a similar shot on a solid tripod. Or reset the exposure so that it's short enough to handhold and try again. I'll often do dusk or nighttime shots on aperture priority setting with a flash to light up someone in the foreground. The shutter stays open long enough to light up the dark, unflashed areas in the background, leading to a long exposure, so I have to use a tripod and have a model that can stay very still. Otherwise the photos end up looking like your shot. As far as saving the photo that you posted--it would take a huge amount of effort by someone that's very good with Photoshop.

IPhoto Pictures Out of Focus

I'm using IMovie 3.03 on a G4 IBook. When I import photos into the IMovie timeline, the photo is slightly out of focus, it's almost as if a soft focus option is in use somplace. However, the picture looks fine in the preview frame.
Using the shapen option does seem to help, but I don't think I should have to sharpen each picture.

Treo 755p camera is out of focus, any suggestions how to fix?

I bought the 755p used, everything works great, but the camera photos are blurry, out of focus. I have checked the online User Guide and I can't find any adjustment or correction for this. Palm wants $199.00 minimum charge to look at the phone. Has anyone had this problem and been able to fix it somehow? Thanks for any help or suggestions. Eric, Reno, Nevada.

Was the phone dropped, or immersed in water? Either of those could cause the camera to lose focus...

Picture-Preview is out of focus, if I'm using the swipe-gesture in the Apple PhotoApp.

If I took a photo with the Apple PhotoApp and do the swipe-gesture to the right to see the preview of the photo this preview is out of focus. It's only the preview, the picture itself is perfectly focussed. If I take a second picture and do the swipe-gesture again, the newly taken photo-preview is out of focus, if I do the swipe-gesture again - to switch to the photo taken before - this photo is focussed.
The photos that are stored in the album are always focussed and perfect. If I touch the little preview of the last photo in the PhotoApp (lower left side) instead of using the gesture the preview is focussed.
Do you have any ideas? The problem persists for many iOS-Versions. The problem never got corrected. I get my updates OTA.

When dragging photos to desktop, what settings are used?

When a photo is dragged out of iPhoto and dropped anywhere in the Finder, what settings are used for that implicit export? E.g., what JPEG quality? It seems to export the full size.
Can't seem to find this documented anywhere!

In tests Old Toad reckoned that it was equivalent to about 8 on Photoshop's scale of 12.
Typically when I export via the file menu I select the highest quality. If iPhoto uses something less than that, then I'll stop dragging and return to the file menu export.
Doesn't quite work like that.
If you have an edited photo then there is a single generation of compression applied. If you export at any setting other than Maximum the file will be smaller. At maximum the file will quite likely be larger - less compression applied to the data.
As to which is best to use? Depends on what you're using this jpeg for - but remember this, exporting via dragging gets none of the metadata you've added in iPhoto (Keywords, Location, titles, descriptions etc)

When a photo is viewed in iPhoto 9.6, why is it sharp then immediately goes out of focus?

When viewing photos (full window), the photo initially is sharp then immediately goes a little out of focus. Thanks to some previous forum responses, a fix is to slightly shift the zoom button to the right, clearing the photo right up. When going through 100+ photos, obviously this is an untenable fix. I assume this is a bug that needs repair.

As a follow-up, I found that if I hold the left mouse button down while on the zoom button, no matter where it is on the slider, the same effect happens, that is that the photo goes out of focus. Once released, the photo sharpens. This DOES NOT happen when the zoom slider is all the way to the left. There as stated earlier the photo stays out of focus.

Any fix for photos being out of focus when in edit mode?

found several discussions about this but no fix. My photos can be sharp as a tack but as soon as I click on "edit" they go out of focus. Sometimes they are out of focus before I ever click on edit but if I zoom slightly they are in perfect focus. I can view them in "preview" on my macbook and they look great. This is obviously frustrating as I can trying to edit them but can't see exactly what I am working with b/c they are showing up blurry. My macbook is a late 2008 and i have the latest version of everything else.
Not sure how long this has been going on but I just noticed it today. I thought my new camera (nikon d7000) was the problem, but as soon as I zoomed a bit I saw they were actually in focus to begin with. Thanks!

So far it appears that the only work around is to zoom a tiny bit -- report the problem to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

Why are some of my photos tack sharp while others in the same series are out of focus?

My camera is a Canon Rebel XS (dSLR) and I primarily use the 50mm f/1.8 lens.
I shoot in Manual Mode with Autofocus ON.
I am having difficulty with my photos coming out incositant - some are out of focus, while others in the same series (taken a moment apart) are tack sharp.
I've attached two examples - one of the out-of-focus image, the other sharp images (both have been blown up).
It is not camera shake and my settings are identical for both photos. (ISO 200 | f/4.5 | 1/100sec in this instance.)
This has become such a problem that I find myself needing to take 10x more photos of the same subject/pose in order to hopefully get one sharp image from the series.
I have asked multiple people about this problem (though I have yet to take my camera and lens to a shop due to lack of funds) and no one has any idea of either what I'm talking about or what the problem could be.
I would appreciate your thoughts and help!

This new pair of images does not look like camera motion -- this one looks like it missed focus.
If you use the included Canon Digital Photo Professional that came with your camera, you can right-click an image and tell it show you the focus point which were used (the camera wont know if you did a focus-and-recompose technique... so if you recompose after locking focus then the focus points indicated by DPP wouldn't be meaningful). But I bring this up because it would allow you to determine which focus point the camera claims it used.
I think you mentinoned that you used "One Shot" focus mode -- not AI Servo. One Shot should block the camera from taking the shot until it thinks it confirmed focus-lock on the selected AF point (or on at least one AF point it you allow the camera to pick from any of its available focus points.) In AI Servo the camera WILL take the shot when you fully press the button -- whether it successfully locked focus or not.
That brings us back to the subject of the focus test.
If you do not own a commercial chart, then you may want to download one from the Internet and print it. Here's a good site: http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart
Print the chart and follow the instructions. I deliberately run the camera out of focus to nearest focus distance and force the camera to re-focus and shoot... and I repeat this at least a half-dozen times. I then repeat... but this time deliberately run the camera out of focus to infinity before forcing the camera to focus and take the shot.
Track each shot as you do the focus test. You may see a pattern emerge (e.g. perhaps it nails focus when going in one direction to find focus... but misses in another, etc.) Such a pattern might indicate the lens is getting sloppy and needs service (it's usually not worth servicing the 50mm f/1.8 due to it's low cost.) The USM and STM lenses allow full-time manual focus override (even if the lens is auto-focusing). The basic auto-focus motor lenses (like the 50mm f/1.8) do not support this and forcing manual focus without disengaging the focus system can be harmful.

I am confused what device you are talking about. You question is here in the Using iPhone section, but it is marked for your MacBook Pro running iOS 6? If you are talking about an iPhone and you never update your profile to say you are running iOS 7, I would blame the paralax feature that slightly zooms into your picture, making certain low-res photos look extra blurry. Hope this helps.

Magnified photos are out of focus

When I magnify a photo in iphoto11 it is out of focus. How can I fix this?

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Out of focus still photos in time line

I have been sent a disc of 11 photos that I down loaded into Iphoto. They are all excellent quality, but when I drag them into the time line and press PLAY, they go out of focus. Press stop and they are clear again. Any thoughts

Are the project dimensions 1920x1080 or 1280x720 or 720x576? What are the dimensions of the images? Select one and the Info inspector will tell you. Control-R will render selected items. Option-R will rendered everything in the Timeline that needs rendering.
