When the mac wakes from sleep, the wireless icon disappears

Hi All, I have a third party wireless PCI card in the PowerMac G4 MDD which works fantastically. The only issue I have is when the machine wakes from sleep, the wireless icon disappears from the top menu and the machine freezes and I have to force shut down.....
Any ideas?
I am running 10.5.8....

Hi, Garry -
It seems some PCI cards don't handle sleep well; sometimes they exhibit behavior such as you've noted, sometimes they just prevent the machine from entering sleep.
In many cases the solution can be to sleep only the monitor; in the Sleep prefs pane, set the sliders for System and Hard Drive to "never", and the one for the monitor to your choice of delay. This arrangement also means waking from sleep is faster.

  • When mac wakes from sleep, the hard drive wakes but the screen is black

It's a problem I've been having off and on for quite a while with my ~2010 MacBook Pro. Sporadically/randomly, when I wake my computer from sleep or turn it on, the status light turns on and the hard drive makes sounds like it's on, but the screen stays black. The only way to get it on again is to manually hold the power button to shut if off and start it up again. Sometimes, the same issue reoccurs when I restart it and I have to manually restart it 5 or 6 times until it finally turns on normally, or I just get tired and give up. I've had everything done at the genius bar, from getting a new hard drive to running diagnostic testing. Nothing works. Any suggestions??

  • When my macbook pro wakes from sleep the curser is not there, no keys work and the screen is frozen so i have to reboot it

Sometimes when my macbook pro wakes from sleep the curser has disappeared, the screen is frozen and no keys work. I have to reboot.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My mac wakes from sleep on its own?

Hi all, for some reason my mac wakes from sleep overnight, not quite sure at which time it does this but I have found the computer awake and up and running in the morning for a few days now?
any ideas why it would wake itself up?

98% likely one of your USB devices is waking it up. Do you have a USB hub attached or a bunch of USB devices (drives, other doodads) attached? The console tip above may help tell you which one it is

  • IPod 4G always mounts for disk use when Mac wakes from sleep

My 4G iPod is always mounting for disk use when my Mac (10.4.8, Dual 1.8 GHz G5) wakes from sleep, even though the settings for the iPod has "enable disk use" unselected. When I launch iTunes (latest version) the iPod promptly is unmounted. I have restored factory settings, I have reinstalled the computer's OS and iTunes with it.

I have started to turn off Bluetooth at night before I put my computer to sleep. I HAVE NOT HAD THE FIREWIRE RANDOM DISMOUNT PROBLEM SINCE. I do not know if this is a freak coincidence -- but so far, so much the better for my firewire drive.

Since the 10.5.8 update my Macbook wont wake from sleep and i have restart it with the power button. The Macbook is totally frozen: the keyboard doesnt respond (caps button light wont go on and etc.) and my external monitor wont come on either.
    What I've tried:
-Install combo update 10.5.8 (i did normal update first time)
-Started up with all the magic keys combos (PRAM and SCM or whatever)
-Tried the fix where you need to (re)enable the ethernet port
    -Set sleephibernate mode to 0
Can anyone help me with this?

  • How do I change the password requirement when my computer wakes from sleep?

I followed the procedures as posted to change the password setting.  This is a personal laptop.  User setting indicate password is not required when waken from sleeping  However, 8.1 continues to ask for a password.  Need help!

Tried this. Settings indicate no password required for booting and no password required for waking from sleep.  Password is not required when rebooting; however, continues to require password when waking from sleep.  Any advise?
This was design by default, you still need password when system locked.

  • IBook Shuts Down When Try To Wake From Sleep

I have an iBook 300 that will work perfectly fine while you use it. When you put it to sleep, it sleeps normally, but when I try to wake it the sleep light goes out, nothing shows on screen, I can hear the hard drive spinning and then it shuts down. When I turn it back on, it works normally until I try to put it to sleep. Any idea what is wrong and how I could fix it? Thanks
    iBook Clamshell 300   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

When you put it to sleep, it sleeps normally...
Is this by closing the lid? How about when you choose 'Sleep' from the menu and then close the lid? How about when just choosing 'Sleep' from the menu and waking it by pressing any key?
If the problems occur only with the lid then it may be a glitch in the lid mechanism ...if otherwise then it may be a system error. If you're running Tiger then it may be a little difficult to source any support for your ibook as Tiger is officially not to be run on it.
Maybe you can live with it the way it is?

  • Another crash when trying to wake from sleep question ?

I've been reading the other topics about the sleep crash but my problem is slightly different.
Here's the situation when the crash has occurred twice:
I get home from work and start up the computer (It’s at the log-in screen). I walk off
Make a drink use the head whatever and come back to a black screen and the sleep light doing its thing. I hit the space bar to wake the computer the screen stays black and the fans come on high speed. I have to do a hard shut down to stop it. When I restart and log in everything is fine. When it sleeps while I’m logged in it wakes normally. So my problem (not sure if its really a problem) is if I let the computer go to sleep from the login screen is crashes. Anything I should do besides not letting it sleep from the login screen? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, from what you describe, it is a problem.
No problems with "sleep mode" on this end. Are you experiencing any other oddities with your system besides waking from sleep?
    Possible problem areas:
Simple things first - in your User Library/Preferences, move com.apple.loginwindow.plist to your desktop. Log-out, log-in, log-out and try sleep. If it crashes again, see below.
directory corruption - have you verified the condition of your Hard Disk using Disk Utility? (you can do this without having to boot your Installer DVD). Just go to Disk Utility, select your Hard Drive, go to the First Aid panel, and select "verify disk". If there is a problem, you'll need to boot the Installer DVD, select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and run the same test as above, except this time select "repair disk". Keep running the repair until you get a clean run.
Hardware: Sometimes hardware problems can create operational problems. My hunch is this is not what's at play here, however, never hurts to check.
From your Installer DVD you can run Apple's Hardware Test. Boot the DVD holding down the option key. Release the option key when Icons start to appear. Eventually, you'll see the Hardware Test icon. Click on it, then click Next. A panel will appear explaining the Test. Select the "quick test" first. It will probably take about 10 - 20 minutes. Post back if it shows any problem with hardware, including RAM chips.

  • Back to my mac. wake from sleep.

is it possible to wake a remote computer from sleep.

Within my airport network using Wake on Lan I can wake my cube (OS 10.4) which is connected by ethernet to a remote airport extreme but when I try to do the same with my mac mini the airport is recognised but not the computer. Looks like a glitch in WoL preventing this ay least with the settings I have tried so far. I can however wake it with Wake 550 with the ethernet card address.
So, at least within a home network I can wake macs on 10.4 and 10.5. Not tried it from outside yet.

  • Mac wakes from sleep by itself

    Hi,
I see my screen popping on for no reason staying on for 5 minuets or so then going back to sleep. Is this normal. I don't recall it doing this before. From what I understand, to get spyware or malware on the computer I need to instal it. But I could be wrong. Thanks for any help.

    Hi
My Imac wakes itself from Screen Sleep? Hot corners have become increasingly unstable. Reseting PRAM has not made any difference, Apple care have said "we could try to install a fresh copy of just the installation system on a second partition".
Is there anymore advice on this before I go ahead with this.
    Thanks for reading

  • Probelm With EArly 2008 8-core Mac Pro on Wake From Sleep

Well, after more than a year of being a flawless machine, I am now starting to have trouble with my 8-core 2.8 GHz Mac Pro purchased in January of 2008. A few days ago I noticed that when I woke the Mac Pro from sleep, the desktop came up momentarily, and then the screen went went black after a second or less. The power light on the front of the Mac Pro was still burning brightly, but I could not do anything but do a power button forced reboot. I did so, and the machine booted up to a blue screen, but would proceed no further. I then did a second power button forced reboot. The Mac Pro then booted up perfectly this time and all was well.
However, I have noticed since then that often when I wake the Mac Pro up from sleep, the desktop comes up and everything looks normal, but I have absolutely no ability to do anything. I can move the cursor on the screen but clicking the mouse on anything (menu items, icons, etc.) does nothing. I cannot do anything but a forced reboot to regain control of the machine.
I have booted from my drive that has the clone of the OS perfectly with no problems. I have used disk utility to check the Mac's main boot drive and all checks out fine. I have repaired permissions. I have reset the SMC, but nothing has helped. This morning when I went to wake up the Mac Pro, the desktop came up, but absolutely nothing was operative. Mouse cursor moved on the screen, but I could not get any menu item or icon to respond when I clicked on it. I did a power button reboot and the machine is working again, but every time I do one of these power button reboots Time Machine takes 15-20 minutes to prepare and do its backup. Clearly something is wrong, but short of never putting my Mac Pro to sleep again I am out of ideas as to what to do next.
For over a year I have been using a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, but I don't know if this is involved in the wake from sleep problem or not. I should add that this keyboard/mouse combination has never previously given any trouble at all.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that anyone may have.
    Tom

Glad to hear you were already using SuperDuper and (use to) use Disk Warrior.
Can't be rushed. Take a look at how long it takes Micromat and SoftRAID to update their products to get a ballpark idea of time and work to have compatible versions. Or do like others, wait for "SP1" or a year, wait for Adobe and others to be ready before fully supporting.
The best time to upgrade to (Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, and now Leopard) is a year out, even when the product is at its end release-point, not when it is just 1.0.
Minor but things First Aid misses, and can mean all the difference in the world. Major is bad enough that after recovering files you need, you should reformat and restore due to keys out of order, overlapped extents, corrupt journal (there is a tip about turning journaling off and back on to fix some problems).
I would wait for Disk Warrior (4.1.1) before upgrading to Leopard, rather than the other way around.
Alsoft can't work on an update until they have in their hands a stable and released version. And Disk Utility does and has changed during the last 18 months.
Apple is in the habit and you will find that developers are left in the dark during the last stage. Then 10.5.0 had too many bugs and problems. 10.5.2 was stable-ish, and changed the "rules of the game." 10.5.6 has had a few wrinkles of its own.
Apple warns to NOT use older versions of its own Leopard Disk Utility with the latest (10.5.6) when it comes to repairing permissions (see MacFixit).
