When the time comes to upgrade to Snow Leopard...
... will I have to reinstall my Windows partition? Will the Snow Leopard upgrade preserve it or delete it?
Anyone know? Just trying to get prepared.
Thanks!
Hi Johnny,
whether or not we have to wait and see until SL is released. The Apple SL website does not have that information.
When going from 10.4 Tiger to 10.5 Leopard my BootCamp Windows partition was untouched.
Nonetheless it might be a good time and idea to backup your Windows using WinClone http://twocanoes.com/winclone/ before updating to SL.
Regards
Stefan

I have upgrade eligibility so when the time come iphone will be available on the list of phones that I'm eligible for upgrade? Is the iphone just gonna appear on the list of phones to purchase on the website?

If i have Time Machine backed up on an external hard drive, do i just plug the drive into another macbook pro and all my stuff is in the new computer? Also, does it matter if the new computer is running Lion when the backed up info came from Snow Leopard 10.6.8?
No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard. -
Motion 4 crashes every time when I try to use the color wheel, after upgraded to Snow Leopard
Every time I try to access the color wheel in Motion, it crashes (like changing the bakcground color in edit>project profile, or changing the color of a text element in text>style>face>color).
This happened when I upgraded to snow leopard. I have kept my Mac Pro running on Leopard because I was afraid the upgrade will affect my final cut studio. Now that Lion is out, I supposed most of the bugs with Snow Leopard should have been iron out. Guess I was wrong. Here is the crash log. Cna somebosy tell me what is wrong and how I can fix it?

Losing connection to time machine since upgrading to snow leopard
My wife's mac mini has routinely started saying 'no connection available' since we upgraded to snow leopard. It also keeps asking for the network password, which it has never done before on my time machine. I thought it was a fluke with the mini, till my macbook started doing the same thing.
Please have someone look at the issue between the dual band time capsule and snow leopard.
Thanks. You're not talking to Apple here -- this is a user-to user forum.
Try just re-selecting the Time Capsule in TM Preferences. If that doesn't help, try restarting both the Macs and the TC.
To contact Apple directly, call AppleCare at (800-275-2273), or make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple store, and take your TC and one or both Macs along.
This appears to be a Time Capsule problem, not a Time Machine problem, so you'll probably do better in the +Time Capsule+ forum, hiding in the +Digital Life+ section, at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253 -
I have a Mac mini OS X 10.4.11, intel core duo processor (not core 2 duo), with 512 mb and 1.83 GHz processor. I only have version 9.0.3 of iTunes because it hasn't let me go higher, which I believe is because of the operating system. I want to get my purchased music from the Mac mini to a different computer (that has the latest version of iTunes) and also my iPad. The Mac mini does not meet the requirements listed to simply upgrade to snow leopard or lion. As far as I can tell. Forgive me if I am lacking here...this is new to me. What can I do to get the music transferred. I have invested alot of money over the past few years on all this music that I should be able to transfer. Thank you in advance if you can help me.
If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

I recently upgraded my 2 year old MacBookPro to Snow Leopard so I could download Face Time and Final Cut ProX to it.
I've already purchased the apps and installed on my iMAC and Macbook Air.
After downloading Face Time I received the following mail;
"Your Apple ID, *************, was just used to purchase FaceTime from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.
If you made this purchase, you can disregard this email. This email was sent as a safeguard designed to protect you against unauthorised purchases.
If you did not make this purchase, we recommend that you go to iforgot.apple.com to change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account for further assistance.
Regards,
Apple"
I don't want to be charged twice for these apps, especially Final Cut ProX, so how can I get the MacBookPro associated with the Apple ID I'm using now?
CheersThis is probably a new precaution that Apple has taken to alert folks that something has occurred with their account that has not occurred before*, namely a Mac has downloaded something from their account that has not done so before. And as the notice says, if it was you doing so, then you may safely ignore the notice. Also, do not be alarmed, Apple refers to all downloads as purchases, even when they are free.
But if you are truly concerned about the notice then you can authorize the Mac with your iTunes account, which should be the same as your MAS account. Open iTunes on the older Mac and sign into your account. Then in the Store menu choose Authorize This Computer. Now this Mac is definitely associated with your account and can now play media that you purchase from the iTunes Store as well.
*My banks do the same thing when I pop up making a purchase with my bank cards somewhere in the world I have never made a purchase before. They call me and email me and want to know if it is indeed me using the card. -
Cannot enter Time Machine after upgrading from Snow Leopard
Hi all,
I've had Lion installed for a few days now and am enjoying the changes to OSX.
Last night I wanted to delete a few redundant files out of my TimeMachine backup and found I could not open the application at all.
I can still backup to Time Machine successfully (so it indicates with preparing, backing up progress (xGB of yGB), finishing, etc). So for the last few days everything appeared to be functioning as expected until last night, when I tried to enter Time Machine.
My specs:
iMac (Oct 2010), 4GB, 1TB, 3.6GHz, backing up to a WD My Passport Essential (1TB) via USB 2.0 (25% full)
I can see the destination drive (and its contents) on my desktop, via Finder and can select it via TimeMachine System Preferences (Select drive). There are no issues 'seeing' or accessing the drive in normal use.
Trying to open the Time Machine application, I have tried via the TimeMachine icon in the TitleBar (ie 'Enter Time Machine'), via Mission Control (double-clicking on Time Machine), typing 'Time Machine' into Spotlight and selecting it from the resulting list, but in all scenarios, nothing happens. Nothing at all. And yet I can backup to Time Machine without a hitch.
I have seen a number of online conversations about the AFP spec having been changed by Apple and third party periphial manufacturers being slow to comply, but using USB, I'm not sure this applies to my case? I have used Macs at home for 8 years and have never heard of AFP until now... So I don't really know if I am impacted by this or not (don't think so).
There have been some troubleshooting solutions involving identifying and deleting the com.apple.timemachine.plist from the Library/Preferences folder (going from memory here) which I did (had to use PathFinder to find the file).
Unfortunately that did not help and Time Machine still refuses to open. There are no errors appearing as a result of trying to open TimeMachine. I have checked the Console, but nothing obvious appears there. I have read others are prompted with an error about AFP, but I get no such error. I can copy files to the drive okay so I can't see how it is the drive. Just Time Machine not wanting to play...
Can anyone suggest anything?
I do have Snow Leopard SuperDupered to another 320GB WD drive if I need to go back, but I don't really want to if I can help it...
Thanks,
Alex MakinWell finally, after 2 days of trying to work out what was the issue, I have resolved the problem.
Its very strange given that I can successfully back up but not restore, as described in my original post.
One thing I neglected to mention was the fact I had set up my Time Machine backup to use 'sparsebundles'. This allows me to have the external drive plugged into my Airport Extreme and use much like Time Capsule.
It didn't seem relevant at the time since I could backup successfully (and still now, I can't understand why Time Machine knows where to back up to, but doesn't know where to restore from).
I didn't have the Time Machine icon sitting in my dock (never needed to since if I need to restore, I access TM from the TitleBar icon). So in putting the TM app in the dock I played a little around with it by clicking it (as you would normally for any other app in the dock) and eventually held down the mouse key to bring up the menu. Tried 'Enter Time Machine' a couple of times without luck, before trying a menu item along the lines of "Try another backup destination' and voila!! Time Machine opens, animated stars, vertical time line, etc.
Well hang on now... Why the heck can't TM have worked this out already?? Why do I need to look somewhere else for my Time Machine backup, when I've already told TM (in System Preferences) where the backup is?
Pretty darn odd, but there you have it. It was there the whole time, but according to TM, it wasn't...
I still have to select the menu item 'Try another backup destination' each time I want to enter TM, but at least I know where to find it...
I'm assumming its the sparsebundles setting (which I'm sticking with), but at least I know its not my iMac, its not the hard drive, its not Lion (well, it sort of is as Snow Leopard knew where to find it...)

Time machine can not access time capsule after upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion
Two days ago I upgraded my 2009 17" MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. That evening my time capsule/time machine combination worked fine and did an incremental backup of about 12 gigabyte. Yesterday - only one day later - the time machine backup did not work anymore.
It appears that the system can not find the time capsule - even though it shows the remaining free space on the time capsule (so it did find it after all).
The message is always the same:
Time Machine can not complete the backup "Time Capsule"
The image of the backup volume "/Volumes/Data/Pauls MacBookPro.sparsebundle" is not accessable (Error -1).
I also can not delete the backup image on the time capsule since it is read-only. And I do not want to format the time caspsule yet since my wife's MBAir is also using the same time casule.
I tried out all kinds of suggestions (hard and soft resetting both the MBP and the TC, entering the password again, setting the TC up again) all to no avail. No backup is possible anymore.Mr. Zooot wrote:

Sounds like you got this message earlier:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Offhand, I don't recall anyone not being able to delete one via the Finder (but most were only backing-up one Mac, so just erased the disk).
You may have to wait for that message to appear again (24 hours later), or you might try holding Alt/Option with the TM icon in the menubar, and select Verify Backups if it will let you. -
Will K8T Neo2-FIR go AMD64 X2 when the time comes?
Since the new X2 is pin 939 compatible can we expect the current K8T Neo2 series to support the X2? June is right around the corner!
OK I was getting weirded out as you even mention the 890 set. I have been hoping that MSI would build one and actually hoped you knew something I didn't. I don't care much about Dual Core at this stage as I don't want to be someone's beta tester on that one at that price.
Yes from what it looks though the Neo2 should be compatible but the jury would know the verdict until it is tested and we know that it does or does not work or maybe even need a Bios update or some such. There is a lot no one knows yet except for maybe the folks at MSI themselves. -
I just upgraded to the new snow leopard, now my Safari is acting loopy. At times, the page will scroll down when I hit the space bar. As I type this discussion the screen isn't paging down, but if I go to the tab where I have facebook loaded and hit the space bar, it acts as a page down key. I've had safari crash about 5 times tonight for no apparent reason. The delete key sometimes will act as a page back key. I really have no idea whats going on.
I've had keyboards go wacko on me before due to something being spilled on them or a wireless problem, but this keyboard is a wired keyboard and nothing was spilled on it. It's rather new and I'm quite certain it's not a keyboard issue.
No settings have been changed on the computer. The only thing different today from yesterday, is the fact that I upgraded to snow leopard.
Help would be pretty sweet.
Thanks,

Recently Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. I've dumped my cache several times and even upgraded to snow leopard.l I have the latest version of Safari 5.0.5. The situation has gotten quite annoying and been going on for about three weeks now. What can I do to fix this short of bringing it to someone?
I restart and it works fine for awhile and then it quits again. I either restart and/or dump the cache AGAIN! This is getting quite tedious. I've even taken the battery out and reinstalled it. Nothing seems to stop the quitting. You don't need anything higher than OSX 10.6.8 to run iTunes 11. iTunes system requirements - http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Upgrade to Snow Leopard disabled iPhoto editing capabilities
Upgraded to Snow Leopard, using iPhoto 8.1 (415).
Problem: Scanned numerous photographs at color 600 dpi on Canon Pixma500, then exported scans to jpeg, then imported into iPhoto
Result: Many will not edit. Here are the symptoms:
(1) Using full screen edit, the screen becomes blank.
(2) If while screen blank, "resize" slide is moved, then small preview screen shows up, with the thumbnail in it, but still major edit screen is blank.
(3) On some photos, if choose "crop" then entire photo will show up, but some will "jump back" to their original size, even after being cropped.
(4) Some images show up in the edit window, but will simply not edit, e.g., no sharpness, saturation or any other change will appear.
(5) For photo that is cropped, and then "jumps back" to its original size, an export file to tiff and re-import of the tiff shows a cropped file.
(6) For some photos, if the crop is a non-standard dimension (custom), then instead of cropping the image, iPhoto actually distorts it! For example if a photo was cropped into a 1 by 7 strip, the image would stretch out into that small strip.
(7) Exporting to tiff and then re-importing to edit does not work for color photos.
(8) same problem occurs for scanned (600 dpi) black and white photos.
(9) Attempts to edit older photos imported from iPhone, which previous before Snow had beed editable, failed, with the same results.
(10) Reading the discussions, there is plenty of information on this. The following do NOT appear to have any effect on the problem: (1) rebuilding the iPhoto library, (2) doing crazy stuff like reinstalling the system, (3) building a new Preferences file, (4) Building a new library, (5) using a back up copy of the photos.
Conclusion: Upgrade to Snow Leopard has temporarily destroyed ability if iPhoto to edit.I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is having this issue.
I have iPhoto 09, version 8.1 (415) - after upgrading to Snow Leopard the editing feature if iPhoto appears to be broken.
What happens is when I edit a picture, the whole screen goes black, the tools appear to edit if I move the mouse, I even get the thumbnails across the top, but just a black screen where the picture will be. I will say that it does this 90% of the time. Every once in a while some pictures will open in the editor but if I go to the previous and then back it may or may not show back up.
I have a pretty big library with pictures from multiple cameras. It cannot be isolated to one particular camera. This problem started after I did my Snow Leopard upgrade.
Things I have tried:
-Rebuild the library
-Edit in the main window vice full screen
-remove and re-install iPhoto from disc
-I even started iPhoto holding the option key, created a new library, uploaded just a few images to the new library and experienced the same problem. So this isolates that it does not appear to be a library issue.
Any thoughts? Anyone else having this issue?

Can anybody tell me how to make Palm handheld running system 4.2.2 work on the Mac I just upgraded to Snow Leopard?
It would help if you stated what Palm device you are using. I had a Tungsten T3 and then an E2 running perfectly well on Snow Leopard before I gave Palm up, using Desktop 4.2.1 rev.d, so you could give that a try:

or failing that 4.2.1 rev.a

though I can't remember what the difference was. -
Upgrading to Snow Leopard from Tiger
I have an iMac early 2006 and meet all of the requirements necessary for upgrading to Snow Leopard. Based on other posts I assume you can upgrade to SL with the $29 software. Is that correct? Also, will I lose data from the hard drive in the upgrade process? I have Time CapsuIe but I cant back it up to it because I dont have Time Machine on Tiger. I have my iPhone synced to this computer so will I have a problem syncing after the upgrade and losing data? Lastly, will the upgrade affect the partitioned OS with Parallels and Windows XP that is installed?

technically, yes. legally? far from clear. there is no agreement on the issue on the forums. it's clear that apple intended the 29$ disks to be used by leopard owners only but they didn't manage to specify it clearly enough on the packaging and in ULA. hence the arguments. in view of this you can do as you like.
Also, will I lose data from the hard drive in the upgrade process?
a regular upgrade preserves your data. but you should make a full backup regardless. you should always back up and it's doubly important before upgrades. make a full bootable clone of your current Tiger system using CCCloner or Superduper. test that it works and then upgrade.

if everything goes well, no.
Lastly, will the upgrade affect the partitioned OS with Parallels and Windows XP that is installed?
no, the upgrade will not touch the windows partition.

How can I stop iTunes from launching and playing by itself?
iTunes launches and plays by itself, which is very annoying, given that there is no discernable reason for it to do so. Nothing in preferences should allow this. No device is connected. The library is not being shared. Has anyone found a solution to
