When To Merge

When should one separate a help project into modules and
create a merged help project? I am new to RoboHelp HTML. I have a
large but not enormous project and I thought it would be a good
idea to break it down into smaller modules. But now I see that by
doing this I will have less control over the table of contents,
linking from one project to another, etc. In any case, can someone
please share your expertise and tell me what the benefits are to
having a merged help project rather than one larger help file? I
must also keep in mind that I will be generating WebHelp from the
same source files.

Welcome to the forum.
Three main reasons for creating modules. One is to match
different modules of your software so that the help is specific to
the installed modules. Two is to split a large unwieldy project
into bite size chunks. Three is to enable different people to work
on different parts of the help without using source control.
Splitting an existing project in this way is a pretty hairy
task for someone new to RH so if you do proceed, make sure you take
plenty of backups along the way.
There's a topic on creating merged webhelp on my site but it
sounds like you also need to create CHM files from the same source.
Perhaps I could ask why?
The problem you are going to hit is that merging chm help and
merging webhelp requires two different structures although I have
been told that it is possible to create merged CHM help by adapting
the method I describe.
Perhaps your best way forward would be to download the demo
file from my site and get your mind around merged webhelp and then
experiment on making it work with CHM files.

    You need to check iCloud to see if they are actually there. Go to iCloud.com and sign in and then look at your Contacts there to see if the old ones are still showing on iCloud.
    If they are not, then you can either re-enter them while you are on iCloud.com, or you can restore your device from the backup where you saved them:

  • How to change default HDR toning with 32 bit smart object - 16 bit, when not merging

    Suppose I have just done this:
    Opened a RAW file as a 16-bit smart object through camera raw, so I can easily go back and change raw parameters if needed
    Converted the document to 32 bit mode
    Set 32-bit preview mode to Highlight Compression
    Added a Curves layer and fiddled with the sliders until satisfied
    So far so good.
    Now what I would like to do is envelope/convert these two layers into a smart object, and then change the mode to 16 bit with a Highlight compression method, but WITHOUT merging the smart object. Merging leaves me with one flattened non-smart layer. Obviously I don't want to merge, because all the smartness of the previous (32 bit) smart object, and I cannot go back to the equally smart raw file.

    After chosing "merge layers", an impressive dialog box is displayed with 4 toning methods. When NOT merging, nothing is displayed, and Exposure/Gamma seems to be silently used. Fine in some cases, but not now. It seems one cannot change that, or choose another one of the 4 methods. But perhaps someone has figured out a way to "will" it in another direction?

    Yes sorry about that, I may have been a bit brief indeed:
    I'm using Photoshop CS5, x64, latest patch (12.0.4). And ACR 6.4.1 to open a Raw file as a smart object in Photoshop.
    Step 2: correct, I used Image->Mode->32bit
    Step 3: I set the 32bit preview mode by clicking View->32-bit Preview Options->Highlight Compession
    Setp 4: I'm mistaken here, I added a Levels layer, because Curves are indeed unavailable in 32 bit mode.
    While I'm at it:
    Step 5: Then, I would select these 2 layers in the layers pane and convert them to a smart object (right click in layers pane -> convert to smart object)
    Step 6: Next step would be Image->Mode->16-bit. It would then ask to have the layers merged or not before changing bit depth. Only if you choose merge, the HDR toning dialog box would appear, from which you can select Exposure&Gamma, Highlight Compession, Local Adaptation and so on.
    I don't want to merge, because it will destroy the smart object containing the Levels layer and the original raw file (in a smart object)
    So I select "Don't merge". It doesn't show the HDR toning dialog, and goes straight in 16-bit mode. But what toning mode did it choose? By comparing the result you get when not merging, to the result when one does merge, it appears a default toning mode of Exposure&gamma is chosen. That's not what I want, because I would like to have Highlight Compression.
    But where can I change this behaviour?

  • Can I rearrange pages when I merge files with Adobe PDF Pack?

    Have purchased PDF pack as an upgrade, but not happy with what it does as doesn't seem to be any better than what I had before
    When you merge documents there doesn't appear to be any tool to rearrange the order or to delete any pages you don't want, which leaves it very limited
    Perhaps I'm missing something, but without this feature it's no better than what I had before
    Can anyone either help or perhaps someone from Adobe can contact me to discuss a refund

    I'm sorry that PDF Pack isn't meeting your needs. It's true that to alter PDF pages in any way, you need Acrobat. PDF Pack lets you convert files to and from PDF and combine files to PDF, but not edit PDFs.

  • When I merge two contact records, some of the email addresses vanish

    Most of my contacts have multiple email addresses. When I save a new address from Mail, I often end up with multiple contact records in Address Book for the same person (same name).
    When I Merge Selected Cards to merge two of the records, one of the email addresses is erased completely — which, of course, completely negates the value of being able to merge the records. My guess is that it's because the email addresses are all listed as "Work" email addresses, and Address Book can't handle that concept.
    Does anyone know a way to make the Merge Selected Cards feature actually merge all of the data?Or at least warn me it is about to erase important data?

    I don't have a mouse with a right click. But found answer on another support thread that works easily for me.
    Mail keeps track of all your addresses to whom you sent mail before. In Mail, go under Window then Previous Recipients. Type in the address you want to drop and then click on Remove from List.

    This just means that not many people use this feature.  However, now that VIPM Professional makes it so easy to edit the palettes, I'm sure that others will start complaining that this doesn't work as they expect.

     Just look up the functional specifications for this feature and see if all objects are supposed to be selected.
    But seriously, is there a reason that only the FP decorations are selected?  Surely this would be documented somewhere, if there was a good reason for this current (IMO, buggy) behavior.

    That's not a reasonably work-around, IMO.  It doesn't make sense to drop Block Diagram components onto the Front Panel.  For example, this bug affects the JKI State Machine.  It doesn't make sense to drop a State Machine onto the Front Panel.
    So, I'd file it as a CAR/bug, and then wait to see how LV R&D feels about it.  If they can find some valid reason for why Controls and Indicators shouldn't be selected, then that's fine (and hopefully someone will explain it to me).

    The photos have just been dumped into a new home and need to be told how to be arranged.  Go to the top left of the browser view for the merged project and select the desired sort order from the drop-down and they'll all sort according to that setting.

    I have a problem, a big problem with adobe. When i merge some documents, all the electronic signature disappear. It's umbelivable because PDF Creator can do it.
    So does anybody know why the electronic signature disappear.
    Just to explain, the electronic signature is at the bottom on the right in the document.

    Any change to a PDF file (except adding a new signature) will invalidate an
    existing signature, as it should be.
    Imagine you sign a contract and then someone adds a bunch of new pages to
    it, with clauses you haven't even read... You would probably not be so
    happy if your signature was automatically applicable to those pages as
    well, no? Fortunately, with digital signatures it automatically gets
    removed when that happens.

  • Aperture 3 - When I merge projects......

    My images are referenced.........
    When I merge projects inside Aperture 3, how do I get them to be merged on my external drive? Do I go in and do it manually, or is there a command in A3 that I should use to execute this action? I looked inside the menus, but nothing popped out at me as the right action to take. And.....
    I assume that I need to manually merge these images on the backup external drive, right? There is no command inside Aperture to merge them on my backup, right? Or is there?

You asked why I want my external images moved..... because I want/need my external to mirror my A3 library in the app. I was going to just try this manually but was afraid I'd mess things up (like in iPhoto where you don't want to touch the organization of folders and such). But I posted here to get the know how before I execute the rearrangement. Anyway, what's the correct way to do this? Or should I just do it manually and A3 will still find and handle these images OK??????

    Where were you downloading the to,   iPhoto, a folder on the Desktop, where? Are they still on the camera's memory card?  If you deleted them from the card and haven't used the card since they can be recovered with recovery software like  MediaRECOVER. You can download the demo version to verify they can be recovered before purchasing it.  Other similar apps can be found at MacUpdate.com by searching for "photo recovery" or similar terms.

    Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
    From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
    The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
    If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

    When I merged layers, because I changed mode to bitmap, I loose this??

    If you view images at other views than 100% (actual pixels),
    photoshop uses some interpolation which may not show
    how the the image really looks when flattened or merging layers.
    Before going to the bitmap mode go to 100% view. Even if you can't see the whole image
    you can at least see part of the image where you did the burning and determine whether
    things change when the image is flattened.

    Why does RoboHelp 8 crash when compiling merged HTML help after deleting a child project in TOC? I would be grateful for any assistance.
    Here's the situation:
    -- I recently upgraded from RoboHelp X5 to RoboHelp 8. I upgraded my projects to RoboHelp 8 projects.
    -- One large help system I manage is built such that there is one master project and about 25 child projects. Each of these is its own item in the master project TOC.
    -- In RoboHelp X5 I never had any trouble deleting these.
    -- However now in RoboHelp 8, whenever I delete one (by opening TOC pod, right-clicking on item in question, and clicking Delete), and proceed to "Generate Primary Layout" (MS HTML Help), the generation/compilation process proceeds as far as "Generating full-text search data" and then the whole program crashes!
    Am I doing something wrong? Is there a bug in the software? I have installed patches 8.0.1 and 8.0.2.
    Once again, I thank you in advance for any pointers.

    When setting up some iCloud info., agreed to merge iPhone and iPad contact info., and now most of my iPhone messages are listed by phone numbers, rather than by the person's name.  Some of the names eventually showed up, but not many, and most of those now have the husband and wife's name together or just the family name (Millers, Smiths, etc.).

    No, your iPhone and your iPad should not appear in the finder.
    I'm not sure what you mean about downloading photos with iPhoto being double handling, but you can download direct to a folder with Image Capture. Image Capture can also be used to delete photos from the Camera Roll on the iPhone or iPad (preferrably after they are downloaded).
    You can remove the photos you synced from your phone with iTunes by syncing again with an empty folder, That will delete all the photos that were previously synced that way, replacing them with the contents of the empty folder (that is, nothing). This will not effect photos takes with the camera on your iPhone.
