When to synchronize JSP?

Is there a simple rule for when I should use the synchronized keyword in JSP and Java? Should I always use it when many threads change an instance variable, for example when I declare variables with <%! %> and many users look at the page? In that case how come so many books forget about this, when they do for example a simple page counter (using an instance variable). Do I ever have to use synchronized if I only read from an instance variable without changing it? What is really an atomic statement? Is for example "i=i+1" an atomic statement? If not, when can it get interrupted an what happens with the parts? Could you also confirm that I never need to use the synchronized keyword for local variables?

Is there a simple rule for when I should use the
synchronized keyword in JSP and Java? Whenever you have an instance variable in a class that will be accessed by multiple threads, you should synchronize on methods that use that variable if it is possible for a method to return a false value due to that variable's state changing.
e.g.
private int x = 10;
private int y = 10;
public void method1()
  System.out.println("x = "+x);
  System.out.println("y = "+y);
  //AAA
  System.out.println("x + y = "+(x + y));
public void method2()
  x = x * 2;
}In the above code, if a thread enters method1 with x and y both equal to 10, and executes the whole method within its allocated time slice, then
x = 10
y = 10
x + y = 20
will be printed to the console.
But suppose the thread reaches the point marked AAA. If another thread takes over and executes method2, then when the first thread regains control, x will be 20, and the output would be
x = 10
y = 10
x + y = 30
This is obviously not the required behaviour, and can be stopped from happening by synchronizing the two methods.
Should I always
use it when many threads change an instance variable,
for example when I declare variables with <%! %> and
many users look at the page? Probably, yes. However, it does take at least 4 times as long to call a synchronized method as it does to call a non-synchronized one, so so if you can be sure that the above behaviour won't happen, don't synchronize.
If you are setting a variable in different places, but there are no methods that need to read the variable more than once, then you can probably get away without having to synchronize.
In that case how come so
many books forget about this, when they do for example
a simple page counter (using an instance variable). You tend not to read somehting like a page count more than once within a page, so it'll be correct at the point its used.
Synchronization is often not covered in JSP and servlet books because if you're reading them, you should probably already know Java and are expected to know about synchronization.
Do
I ever have to use synchronized if I only read from an
instance variable without changing it? No.
What is really
an atomic statement? Is for example "i=i+1" an atomic
statement? Yes. Every Java statement is executed as if it were an atomic statement (I remember reading that somewhere, but I'm not sure where).
If not, when can it get interrupted an what
happens with the parts? Could you also confirm that I
never need to use the synchronized keyword for local
variables?Confirmed. Each thread gets its own local variables.

  • Moving Scriptlet Code to backing bean when converting from JSP - Facelets

    Hello!
    We are converting our application from jsf1.2 to 2.0 and all jsps are being converted to XHTML. Some are trivial while others had very complex scriptlets.
    I would like to know what are some of the recommended ways of moving Scriptlet Code to backing bean when converting from JSP -> Facelets.
    I have thought about listeners, actionListeners, putting code getXXXX() of the backing bean and then calling #{bean.XXXX} but not sure whats the best way.
    I do appreciate the response!
    Eg of a jsp page:
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" prefix="h" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" prefix="f" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/xxx-jsf.tld" prefix="l" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/yyy-pp.tld" prefix="p" %>
    <%@ page import="com.ttyy.search.beans.jsf.AdvancedSearchFormManagedBean" %>
    <%@ page import="com.kkee.util.*"%>
    <%
        AdvancedSearchFormManagedBean advancedSearchFormManagedBean = (AdvancedSearchFormManagedBean) request.getSession().getAttribute("AdvancedSearchFormManagedBean");
        if (advancedSearchFormManagedBean == null) {
           advancedSearchFormManagedBean = new AdvancedSearchFormManagedBean();
           request.getSession().setAttribute("AdvancedSearchFormManagedBean", advancedSearchFormManagedBean);
        advancedSearchFormManagedBean.initializeForAdvancedSearchOptions();
        advancedSearchFormManagedBean.setQuickSearch();
         request.setAttribute("portletHeader", "Hello " + advancedSearchFormManagedBean.getPerson().getFirstname() + ", check out the latest programs in your practice areas and jurisdictions");
    %>
    <h:form id="MYCenterForm">
         <p:portletRenderer portletSetName="test of portlet"
              portletContainer="#{PortletContainerManagedBean}"
              id="MYCenter"
              portletScope = "TEST_SCOPE"
              suppressIfNoData="true"
              portletSkinName="SOME_SKIN">
              <f:facet name="persistenceToolkit">
                   <h:commandLink id="persistenceToolkitLink"

                        <h:outputText value="Save State Of Portlet Set" id="persistenceToolkitLinkText"/>
                   </h:commandLink>
              </f:facet>
         </p:pagePortletSetRenderer>
    </h:form>
    <%
         String flag = PropertyItems.getInstance().getPropertyItem("response.time.flag");
         if("1".equals(flag)){
              ResponseTime rt = (ResponseTime) session.getAttribute("responseTime");
            if(rt!=null){
                rt.setDesc("my cle loaded");
                long now = System.currentTimeMillis();
                long start = rt.getStart() + rt.getTotal();
                rt.setInterval(now-start);
                rt.setTotal(rt.getTotal()+rt.getInterval());
                LogUtil.log(rt.toString(), LogUtil.DEBUG_LEVEL);
                session.setAttribute("responseTime", rt);
    %>

    That helps.
    This could be another topic question but itst kind of related to what i am doing right now. while converting JSP to facelet (in jsf2) I came across another issue.
    <h:commandLink id="Save" rendered="#{RegistrationBean.isNOTInOrigionalRegistrationMode}" action="#{RegistrationBean.updateProfile2Submit}" styleClass="#{portalSkinManagedBean.contentPortletSkin.strongTextStyle}">

    </h:commandLink>When I click on the generated link, I get this. And this is happening for all the h:commandLink in the application.

  • When to use jsp,and when to use servlet?

    I think that jsp and servlet can realize the same functions, because when run a jsp, it is transferred to a servlet program, so when to use jsp and when to use servlet?
    I am now developing the input interface for a website, I just use jsp and javabean to connect to weblogic and database, and I didn't use servlet, Is there any unseemliness?
    Thank you!

    IMHO I use servlets to control the flow between my jsp's based on a number of factors in a webapp. For instance, user authorization. If a user has the authorization to conduct various administrative functions on an application (like change user rights, reset passwords etc) they will have access to specific buttons or links on some screens that others will not. I use servlets to establish what access rights a user has and direct them to the appropriate pages. I also use servlets to test data validity on form input screens. I know that I can also do this with JavaScript but that can be disabled by the client and in order to prevent that I also double check the form input from a servlet. All my jsp's do is display the results of a business process (which is held in a JavaBean or EJB) and the servlets act as the controllers for the application, connecting to multiple databases, verifying application state, flow control etc. I try to keep the jsp as simple as possible as some of them are maintained by html developers who lack the necessary experience to write java code. I hope this helps.

  • Message error when I synchronize my BB with Outlook

    Hi everybody,
    from today, when I synchronize my BB (Torch 9800, OS 6), with Outlook 2007, I always have this message error "0x8386006e".
    Before I didn't have any prob.
    Desktop manager version is "6.1.036".
    Could somebody help me?
    Thanks in advance
    Patrick

    At the end, I solved the prob.
    It was due to the app called "Pocket informant", so I deleted this app from my BB and now I don't have any message.
    It seems that there are prob when this app synchronizes the tasks.

  • On my Mac Book Pro I have 18 groups of contact. When I synchronize, on my iPod touch I have 7 groups?

    On my Mac Book Pro I have 18 groups of contact. When I synchronize, on my iPod touch I have 7 groups?
    Why? How to correct?

    As I hinted.. dropouts of wireless are not unusual at all on the AC model.. and AFAIK there is not much in the way of a fix.
    The ipad might be using 2.4ghz which will work better than 5ghz.
    Do a full factory reset of the TC.
    Give it all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    Including a different name for the 5ghz band. I want to try and force bands to see if it is only 5ghz giving trouble.
    Then set channels for the 2.4ghz.. try in turn, 11, 6, 1 in that order.
    Setting bands for 5ghz does nothing apparently..
    Join the MBP to the 2.4ghz and see if it suffers the same problems.. if so that is not it..
    Then I think you might need to check the MBP as it might have issues.. did you upgrade install Mavericks? Did the issue exist before mavericks if you did upgrade?

  • I've bought the season 1 of "The Wire" (7episodes), when I synchronize with my PC, it only charge the first and last episodes and not the 5 episodes in between ??

    I've bought the season 1 of "The Wire" (7episodes), when I synchronize with my PC, it only charge the first and last episodes and not the 5 episodes in between ??

    Hello spinozette,
    I am sure you are eager to download and watch Season 1 of The Wire.  I found a couple of resources that might help with downloading this purchase.
    First, I recommend checking to see if the download was interrupted.  You can use the steps in this article:
    iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1725
    If the episodes do not download after following the steps in that article, I recommend trying to download the episodes from the list of past purchases. You can find the steps to do this in the section titled "Apps, Books, Music, Movies, or TV shows on a computer" in the following article:
    Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
    If you are still not able to download the rest of the season, I recommend reporting this issue to the iTunes Store:
    How to report an issue with your iTunes Store, App Store, Mac App Store, or iBooks Store purchase
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1933
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Where do my "notes" go on my MacBook when I synchronize? thanks

    Hi, I want to save the content of "notes" from my iPad onto my MacBook Pro,
    when I synchronize on iTunes it seems to do the job but then I don't know where to find "notes" on my MacBook afterwards..
    help please
    thanks

    It is good that now we have icloud, except that it did not help me very much when my phone was lost a few days ago because some of the notes I keep are ongoing.  So when I signed up for icloud back in December, it syncs all the new notes I have typed since then.  Updating or adding information to an old note --or even it syncing the old notes once to get everything going is not something icloud does.  So now I am left with 30 notes nicely synced since December, and none of the really important stuff that i need that was older than that.  When I go to Mail/reminders/notes, it shows me only the new ones obtained from icloud.  Where are the older ones that should be there from actually plugging the phone into the computer and syncing the notes, which I did in November before I signed up for icloud?  Does icloud erase my content?  Please tell me no. please please please say it doesn't.  The guy in the att store told me to turn off icloud in mail to see my synced notes.  I haven't done this because I didn't want to completely erase the account and I didn't know how to turn it off without minus-ing it.  Any help will be direly appreciated.

  • When to synchronize ?

    i'm re-tooling a shopping cart and noticed the previous coder did not synchronize any methods.
    curious as to what the negative sides are by not using synchronize in a shopping cart application.
    any suggestions would be great.
    thanks.

    "When should I synchronize in a shopping cart?" is like asking, "When should I use i++ in a shopping cart?" or, "When should I override equals in a shopping cart?"
    There isn't really an answer to when to synchronize in a shopping cart. Rather,ou need to understand when to synchronize in general, and apply it to the parts of your shopping cart that meet those criteria.
    In general, you synchronize when you need to make sure that only one thread at a time executes a method or block of code, or any of a number of related methods or blocks of code or when you want to make sure that a value that's set by one thread is seen by another. Both are related to data that's shared among threads.
    It's more complex than that, of course.
