When to use upper-case variable names?

What is recommended:
1. private static final int INITIAL_CAPACITY = 10000;
or
2. public static final int INITIAL_CAPACITY = 10000;
or
3. both (1 and 2).

Get a copy of "The Elements of Java Style", and/or read the style guidelines available on this site.
You should follow naming and other style conventions. It makes your code easier to read and thus easier to maintain.

Question related to upper case variable names requirement since 11.1.1.5

Hello,
I've recently upgraded from 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.1.6 version of ODI.
I had some problems executing the packages that worked on 11.1.1.3. I figured out it was the variable case issue.
I have a lot of procedures in my project, where I am passing lower cased variables from command on source to command on target.
E.g.
Command on target:
OdiStartScen -SCEN_NAME=PACKAGE1 -SCEN_VERSION=-1 -LOG_LEVEL=#log_level -GLOBAL.V_HOST=#host -GLOBAL.V_PORT=#port
Command on source:
select host, port, log_level <%=odiRef.getObjectName( "TABLE" )%>
I tried using double quotes, it didn't work. Then I wrote all the variables in upper case (OdiStartScen -SCEN_NAME=PACKAGE1 -SCEN_VERSION=-1 -LOG_LEVEL=#LOG_LEVEL -GLOBAL.V_HOST=#HOST -GLOBAL.V_PORT=#PORT) and it worked.
Now, I have a big project on my hands, with a lot of procedures.
Is there a way to automatize the process?
Like, search for a certain string (log_level, host...) in each of the command of each procedure in the entire Project, and replace it with upper case? Maybe Jython script?
It would save me a lot of time. Please help.

It was a bug (12971227) on 11.1.1.6.0 and there is a patch available to address the issue. Please apply the patch containing fix for bug 12971227 in your environment.

Petstore install problem on Derby and Mysql (Linux) - Upper case table name

Hi
I seem to have a problem which may also be at the heart of many threads here - the tables are created in lower case yet referenced in UPPER CASE.
If the DB is case sensitive, the tables arent found.
does anyone have an UPPER CASED VERSION OF THE SETUP SCRIPT ????
1) setup/sql/javadb/petstore.sql contains all table and field names in lower case
in Netbeans look under ServerResources/sql
i.e.

Basic form
CASE f.
Effect Case distinction.
Depending on the current contents of a field, this statement executes one of several alternative processing branches. The field whose contents determine how the subsequent processing is specified after CASE ; the individual processing branches are introduced by WHEN , followed by the value to be tested. The entire block is concluded by ENDCASE . The structure of the CASE statement is as follows:
CASE f.
WHEN f1.
WHEN f2.
ENDCASE.
On reaching such a CASE statement, the processor compares f with f1 .
If f = f1 , it executes the processing block between " WHEN f1. " and the next WHEN statement. If there are no further WHEN statements, it executes the processing block up to the ENDCASE statement and then continues with any subsequent processing.
If f <> f1 , the processor compares the field f2 in the next WHEN statement with f and proceeds as with f1 and so on.
Although f should be a variable, f1 can be a variable or a literal. For the comparison " f = f1 ", the rules are the same as for IF .
There is a second variant of the WHEN statement:
WHEN OTHERS.
No more than one such WHEN statement is allowed within a CASE block. The " WHEN OTHERS " processing block is always concluded by ENDCASE , i.e. no further WHEN statements can follow.
The " WHEN OTHERS " processing block is executed only if none of the preceding WHEN blocks have been executed, i.e. if all previous comparisons (" f = ... ) have returned a negative result.

You can nest several CASE statements and even combine them with IF statements.

Using eval on variables' names

The line

works fine, whereas
eval("_root."+this.n)=eval("_root."+this.n)+this.step;
says "Left side of assignment operator must be variable or

p is a name of an object created with arrachMovie
n is the name of a variable containing a number
Using this[] in place of eval() raises no errors but does no
do the
assignment meant
What is the explaination?

No, all files used or produced by Documaker on unix platforms will be lower case. Of course, there's nothing to prevent you from renaming the PDF file after it is produced.

If we use lower case database name, would encounter any problems, what sort of problems?

See its the data problem of any way to handle it manually
You need to use
split firstname into f1 f2 at space.
now take F2 and write as Translate f2 at upper case.
now CLEAR FIRSTNAME.
CONCATENATE F1 F2 INTO firstname seperated by space.

Creating menu name/address with upper-case letters

I just updated my website using Muse, and for the most part it has been remarkably frustration free (and considering I did a total overhaul...that's no small accomplishment!)
I have encountered one problem, however. I have one menu page/address that it is important that I use upper-case letters (it's an order form that has been used for years and the big order period is about to start next week...and I want people to be able to find and access it).
I can not figure out how to change it so the file name will be ALLCAPS.html. Page Properties reverts the name to all lower-case instantly, and any search I do comes up with information that is several years (and generations of software) ago and no longer relevant.
Getting desperate as I'd rather not go back to IWeb and re-do the site yet again...and only have a few days left.

So this is new with iWeb '08??
Only the Password accepts caps?

Force Upper Case on Account Name

We want to force upper case Account Name. Can we do this using post default value of Field Set up..I see function UPPER.. what is the syntax..

Having the same problem i have the following which works if the information is all lower case but if there is an uppercase value in the infomation it then doesnt see this as an issue.
FindNoneOf([<IndexedShortText0>], "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz")>0
Under Field Validation Error Message i have "Please enter in Caps"

1) I created a table:
CREATE TABLE radios(name varchar2(20), frequency varchar2(20));
Notice that the table name is lower case ("radios").
2) I added a constraint on the "name" column:
ALTER TABLE radios ADD CONSTRAINT name_pk PRIMARY KEY(name);
3) Now I want to list the existing constraints for the table "radios".
3.a) If I use the lower case table name, the result is empty:
SQL> SELECT constraint_name, constraint_type
FROM user_constraints
WHERE table_name = 'radios';
no rows selected
3.b) Now, if I use the upper case table name, I get what I am looking for:
SQL> SELECT constraint_name, constraint_type
FROM user_constraints
WHERE table_name = 'RADIOS';
CONSTRAINT_NAME C
NAME_PK P
Can you explain me that phenomenon?
I mean: I created a table name lower case so why does it work
only with the upper case formulation?
Do we have to create upper case table names consistently?
How do you create table names: do you create them upper case?

All the object names are stored in UPPER case, unles you use double quotes to create them:
SQL> create table TesT_1 ( a number);
Table created.
SQL> create table "TesT_2" ( a number);
Table created.
SQL> select table_name from user_tables where table_name like '%1' or table_name like '%2';
TABLE_NAME
TEST_1
TesT_2

Using a variable's definition as a variable name

I have a string variable with definition I need to use as a
variable name.
For example, this is super simplified:
var newVariable = 'it is working';
var partOne:String = 'new';
var partTwo:String = 'Variable';
var partThree = partOne + partTwo;
trace("my variable is " + partThree);
Instead of tracing partThree as literally partOne + partTwo
(which traces "newVariable") i'd like it to trace the
Definition of partOne + partTwo (which is "it is working").
I hope this makes sense, help or advice is
appreciated.
