When transfering iTunes music from an older computer to a newer computer, do the versions need to be the same on both?
When transfering itunes music from my older computer to a newer computer, do both itunes need to be the same version?
No... the target machine needs to be running the same version or better.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

The thing is, my itunes media folder where the .itl and .xml files are located are different from where my actual music folder is located (on my desktop), but my itunes library is still managed by itunes so I'm not sure how to go about it because I can't just simply copy the whole itunes folder because I have two seperate ones
There are multiple threads and documents on how to accomplish this. Was a search of the forums or your favorite search engine done before posting this common issue?
The library files and media files being in different locations is a minor issue.. same basic concept still applies. Move the ENTIRE iTunes folder (and any media folders) to the new computer from the old computer. -

I transferred all of my music from an older PC to my new one with Windows 7. Now I cannot edit selected songs. The information is greyed out and I can't type over it (on all my music except NEW downloads). Can anyone help? I even have a few songs with NO artist tag and I can't write anything in them either.
It's a permissions problem. Try this: right click on your iTunes icon and choose "run as administrator" that might fix it.

How do I transfer music from my ipod touch to a new computer?
Okay, so I threw out my old computer because it had a virus and it cannot be repaired. All my music was stored in it but I have it all in my ipod touch. I just got a new computer and I downloaded the itunes library but I don't know how to transfer my music from my ipod touch into a new computer. Has this happened to anybody before, if so, please share some ideas. This will help me a lot since I haven't added any songs into my ipod for almost a month now!!! =(

how do I put music from my iphone egs to my new computer, how do I put music from my iphone to my new computer?
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
The iphone is not a storage/backup device.
The music sync is one way - computer to iphone.
You can transfer itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases -
