When transferring to new Mac using external harddrive

I'm trying to transfer my information using migration assistant. However, my external harddrive can not be located?

Migration assistant is designed to transfer data from one Mac to another Mac.
Since you are using an external HDD, you will have to connect it to your MBP and manually transfer the data via drag and drop.  I am assuming that the HDD is in a format compatible with a Mac.

  • Setting up and managing iPhoto with new Mac and external harddrive

First time Mac user and I'm stressing about iPhoto!
I have the new 13" Macbook Air.
I have my old PC (no longer using) that has all of my old photos on it.
Those photos are also on my Wireless Network Drive.
Have not done anything YET in iPhoto because I want to set it up properly.....that's where I'm stressing.....
Here is how I want it to work, which I fear is not possible or maybe I'm just not understanding the correct setup I need to do to meet my needs:
    1. I want all of the old PC pics to stay on the Network Drive only UNLESS I decide to BRING the specific ones into iPhoto down the road.
    2. I want new pics I take on my SLR to go to iPhoto (which they will) AND the Network Drive for back up (no problem here)
    3. Every now and then I will MOVE the photos OFF of my Mac completely and to the Network Drive to make sure I always have space on the Mac.
I also have iCloud and Time Machine so maybe those could help me as well.
    4. This is my biggiest complaint.....when I open a photo in iPhoto and edit it, I WANT TO SEE THE ORIGINAL FILE in iPhoto ALWAYS.  After reading tons of message boards it sounds like yes, iPhoto does save the original BUT it is nearly impossible to find and it is labeled very poorly.  (I know there is a trick to view the original next to the edited one while you're in iPhoto, but that isn't what I mean).  I essentially want to see my edited photo and my original photo just like you would on a PC if you did 'save as new'.  I want the original in iPHOTO next to/near the edited one(s) not in a hidden/impossible to find/archived path.
If I'm understanding correctly from what I've read, based on what I want, I may need to use a 'reference library' versus a 'managed library'?
I'm not crazy about doing that though because it seems there are risks because it isn't stored in the 'library package'?
To make a long story short, I want my new pics on my Mac, old pics can stay on the network drive (unless I want to edit them or show someone), and I want to be able to easily access the ORIGINAL file.  I want everything to be safely backed up and want the option to move things to the network drive/time machine/cloud or w/e when space gets limited on Mac.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

New photos go to iPhoto, I organize, tag, create albums do whatever.  These are also getting backed up in the Cloud and Time Machine (I think?? I still have to research more about how those works....sorry, Mac Newbie)
There is no iCloud backup of photos
Time Machine is good - but it appears that it does not backup the iPhoto library if iPhoto is running so be careful there
If I start to really run out of space, I can move them off Mac completely.
To do that correctly you need an external disk formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) with an iPhoto library on it and use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to move photos between your MBA iPhoto library and the iPhoto library on the external drive
Regarding issue #4 about the original version, I read one of your posts which explained that the original version can be viewed by going to Home/Pictures/Photo Library Folder/Originals......so I could do that (as long as I don't mess with it). My only concern here is the naming convention that will use- I feel like it will be so hard for me to find the original one I want.
That is not a supported way to access the originals and is dangerous - any change no matter how small can corrput yoru library and cause loss of data and possibly photos - the simple rule is never go into the iPhoto library - there is no reason to - if you wnat the original photo you select it in iPhoto and export as kind = original
Maybe a program like Aperture may be better for me, but again, I'm open to suggestions since you're much more familiar with all of this than I am!
Aperature is more expensive and has many more capabilities including working well with referenced libraries
As to using iPhoto - no one here "encourages" anyone to use iPhoto - in fact for people who want to do things iPhoto does not do or ins not good at we often recommend using other programs - if you want to use it we can help use it correctly - we can not helop you use it incorrectly or make any changes in the way it works

  • I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos

I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos and say that I need to upgrade my I photo to a newer version. The old mac has no more support from apple in software update so I am not sure where I should go from here. can I use new soft ware with the old mac

The other part of the upgrade message was a warning that once you upgraded you would no longer be able to open the library with the old version which is exaclty what you did and what happened when you choose to continue
The iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library. Cancel or upgrade.
So now your choices are to not use iPhoto with the previous version using it onky with the newer version, restore your backup from before you did this upgrade or purchase iPhoto Library Manager and use it to rebuild the library using the older version of iPhoto (instructions are on their web site) thereby downgrading it (without projects)

  • Can i transfer my iPhoto file from old mac to new mac using iCloud?

I got a new mac and want transfer my Iphotos to my new mac using icloud.  Is this possible?  How?  I registered both computers with Icloud.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately you can't use iCloud for this.
You can do this over a network, using an external HD, USB memory stick or DVD.

  • How do i back up files from mac to external harddrive

how do I back up files from mac to external harddrive not using time machine?

First format the external as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Connect via Firewire.
If it is just a few files or folders you want to back up you can just drag and drop. Or you can use SyncTwoFolders to keep the backups up to date.
If you want to back up your entire start-up disk use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner, both of which can make a bootable clone of your entire start-up drive.
You can Google for the download sites of these applications, or search here:

If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?

You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.

  • Re-Creating Entire System on New Mac From External Drive Using Time Machine

    Hi all -
Sorry if this question has been posted, I've look extensively and haven't seen it in this exact form, and I'm paranoid about this stuff. I also can't get a straight answer from Apple store employees.
I travel extensively with my MacBook, and when I'm home, I use Time Machine to back up all data from my MacBook onto an OWC external hard drive.
My question is, if my MacBook is ever lost, stolen, or damaged, and its internal hard drive is no longer accessible, and I have to buy a new MacBook, can I use Time Machine to access the backup data on my external drive and transfer it to my new MacBook's internal drive, thus re-creating my entire system on my new MacBook, including all settings, preferences, files, absolutely everything exactly as it was on my old MacBook?
This is by far the most likely need I'll ever have for this backup data, so if Time Machine doesn't help me to re-create my system exactly as it was on a new laptop, it's not of much use, and I'll switch backup software.
Related question - I read somewhere that Time Machine keeps making backups on your external hard drive until it runs out of space. Does that mean it literally uses up every bit of space on the external drive? Because overstuffing my old external drive is what killed it, and cost me a huge chunk of change and several weeks to get the recoverable data off the drive. Or does Time Machine know enough to stop backing up when there is only "X" amount of space left on the drive, and if so, at what amount of remaining free space does it stop?
    Thanks for your help!

If you need to restore everything to a new Mac, you simply have your TM drive connected when you start up the new Mac and during the Welcome routine that runs when you start up a new Mac for the first time you will be presented with the option of migrating your user info, settings, files, applications, etc., from a Time Machine backup. You just click "Yes" and all your backed-up info will be transferred to your new Mac.
Time Machine continuous "cleans up" backups so you do not need to worry about TM pushing a drive to its capacity limits, or even close to that.

  • Lost gmail folder content when transferring from old mac to new

I got a new Mac Pro recently and used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my old mac to the new one.  Everything worked fine except in my gmail account.  None of the mailbox folders I set up transferred.  How can I get them onto the new machine?

If I activate 2-step verification now, would it somehow allow me to access the "lost" gmail folders?
No. Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Using time machine to backup my mac to external harddrive as well as backing up a second seperate harddrive to another external hard drive???

Hey Guys, i currently have time machine backing up everything on my 2011 imac to an external harddrive, which is working fine! No problems there.
As a photographer, i currently have two seperate harddrives. Harddrive (A) - All projects/files, & Harddrive (B) - Backup of Harddrive (A) with all projects/files.
What i'm wanting is for time machine to continue backing up my i mac as usual to the external harddrive, whilst also backing up the contents of Harddrive (A) to Harddrive (B) at the same time without backing up everything on my imac
    Is this possible to do??
Hope you understood what i meant easily! haha
    Cheers
    Leslie

Sorry Leslie but time machine cant do what you are asking for, however there are free apps like backuplist+ that can sync Harddrive to Harddrive, the app can be found here

  • Authorising a new user to own Apple software when transferring a 2012 Mac

This is one is doing my head in!
I own a 2012 MacBook Air. The Apple Software was originally a mixture of iWork DVD and OS original software. Now everything updates automatically and smoothly via the App store update. Let's call this Mac1
I now intend to purchase another Mac (Mac2) and give Mac 1 to my daughter. My daughter has an Apple ID for iTunes but has never purchased Mac software in her own name.
Migrating from Mac 1 to Mac 2 is no problem. My issue is what to do with Mac 1:
    - if I simply create a new account in her name and erase my own data, she'll be able to use the computer but everytime there's a software update, she'll need to enter my own Apple ID. No desirable nor practical
    - if I reset to factory settings, it will revert to Mountain Lion (or was it simple Lion?) which does not contain the iWork suite. Even if I upgrade Mac1 to Mavericks, the iWork suite will not be present and my daughter will have to re-purchase it. This is both impractical and unfair as I have already paid for the software twice (old machine + DVD, AND new machine)
Somebody suggested that I let her sign in in her own name on Mac 2 so that she can apply the software to her Apple ID. I should then restore Mac 2 to factory/Mavericks and then transfer the info from Mac 1 to Mac 2. I would then restore Mac 1 to factory, then upgrade from Lion to Mavericks, then restore the Apps through App store (and then of course reinstall any other apps manually). As you can see, this is highly complicated and would take a day!
Please please tell me there's a better way!

After a very long chat with Apple, there is actually a simple solution. It involves the new user (my daughter) to first sign into the brand new Mac in order to create a purchase 'trace'. This can then be applied to any machine including the old one. The only thing I need to remember is to de-authorise the old machine from iTunes (as well as do similar things on licence restricted software such as Creative Suite). Here's the sequence:
1.) She accepts the iWork suite with her Apple ID on your new Mac
2.) She then signs into the Mac App Store on your old Mac and downloads the suite under Purchases
3.) You sign into the Mac App Store on your new Mac
4.) You download the iWork that is tied to your Apple ID

  • New Mac user-External Hard Drive question...

Just purchased my 1st Mac/the new Mac mini. Arrived today & am very impressed.
Set-up, right out of the box, was incredibly SIMPLE and I cant believe what a little dynamo this thing is! I've thought about 'switching' to a Mac from PC for quite a while, but was always a little nervous, so I've patiently watched & waited from the sidelines- until now - and it was well worth the wait.
My 'question' is, can anyone recommend a good external hard drive I can use interchangeably between my PC & my new Mini? Still using the PC until I get completely acclimated with Mac platform/etc - I'd like something with at least
    1TB storage. Thanks!

Time Machine requires an external hard drive
You can back up by other means to CDs or DVDs
If you are a .MAC customer you get a decent backup program that backs up to your iDisk and/or to CD-DVD
You would NOT want to back up to your internal drive since that would accomplish nothing - a dead or messed up HD is no good for either the beginning part of the other part where the backup is

  • Photos lost in another library when transferred from old mac. Can't work out how to update them.

Hi I've imported photos from my old mac onto my new but could not find them in iphoto. When I searched for them I realised they were in another library. I transferred over to what I think is that library and it said I needed to update the softwear for them which I tried to do but after downloading could not understand apple's instructions. They said to choose the Go menu in Finder - what's that?!! Now when I tried to go back to my other library I couldn't find it ahhhggg!!!
    M

What version of iPhoto were you using on the old Mac?  What version on the new, Mac.
If you try to open the "older" library with the iPhoto on the new Mac it will need to convert it to the newer version.  If the older version was iPhoto 7 or earlier and the new vesion was iPhoto 9.5 then you will need to download and run the  iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.
So if you will provide information asked for we can go from there.
    Happy Holidays

  • Playlists lost in transferring to new Mac

I've recently upgraded from a G3 Mini-Tower running OS 9, with my iTunes 2.0 song collection on an external drive, to a new iMac G5 running Tiger. Copying the song collection and the iTunes Library file to the new iMac drive over a network connection seemed to work fine, but iTunes 6.0 said it couldn't find many of the songs (especially older ones) when I tried to play them. They're in the song collection and play fine on my iPod.
After several such attempts -- believing an alternate approach might be easier than having to locate so many songs individually -- I then purchased Tune Transfer, with the intent of "back copying" my library of playlists and songs from my iPod to the new iMac. The application copies all the songs just fine, but literally none of the playlists appear in iTunes. This is true whether I use the Tune Transfer option to organize songs by albums or by playlists.
With 200 or so playlists and 2600 songs, I very much don't want to have to recreate all those playlists manually! What can I do, please, to get my former library of both songs and playlists properly recognized by iTunes on the new Mac?
    Thank you...

If you have a TimeMachine drive already made on the old Mac, then just hook that up to the new Mac and use Migration Assistant in the Utlities folder.
Or Download Carbon Copy Cloner to the old Mac.
    http://www.bombich.com/
Get a blank powered external drive (say no to TimeMachine) and use Disk Utiltiy in your Utilities folder to format it the basic Mac format using the Erase command. (it should be 1 Partition, click the box, Option: GUID, OS X Extended Journaled)
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the internal MacintoshHD to the external drive. Quit.
Take either TM or CCC drive to the new Mac and connect.
In your Utiltiies folder is Migration Assistant, use that to transfer apps and users accounts to the new machine.
It will not delete the account you first set the machine up with, it's good to keep that in case you have log in problems in the future.
However if you want to transfer data between users accounts to consolidate them, then you can use this
Combine two+ Users Accounts on the same machine
This method is very reliable, doesn't involve Wifi which can take a very long time and you can use CCC to backup your new computer as well, so your not wasting money on a Thunderbolt to Firewire cable/adpater your never going to use again as it's being made obselete.
Clones are bootable to use the machine like before, so that's a big advantage if you run into trouble, TimeMachine is a backup only, it can't boot to use the machine.
