DON'T DO IT! Read the threads ... there is a MAJOR problem with updating iPhones 3GS/4 to iOS 5.
Take it to the Apple store and ask them to do it.
I repeat: DON'T DO IT YOURSELF.

I assume you have tried everything here?
iPod: Cannot restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439
It doesn't mention 1442, but the same troubleshooting applies.
It wouldn't hurt to also try another available USB port on your machine and another sync cable if possible.
Lastly, try restoring the iPod on another PC or Mac running iTunes.
If you know of somebody with a PC running Windows XP still, ask them if you can download the reset utility and use it to reset the Shuffle.

I am the administrator and the only one who uses the computer. The box in system preferences that allows me to administer the computer is checked.

When trying to enter 3 security answers I keep getting error message about my year of birth

When trying to buy some music I'm presented with a Security Info screen to select 3 questions and answers. When I finish and press enter, I get an error message "Your year of birth must be between 1880 and 2010" when none of the questions or answers relate to my age or birth. I can't get past this to complete the purchase. Any suggestions?

All you need to do is restore the iphone in itunes as new
and then set up as new
after this is done
then you can restore from itunes back up with out any error!!

Mail says it can't contact the mail server of my ISP. If I do a restart I'm told I have to close mail myself. When I start mail I get a message that it can't contact my ISP's server. What should I do?

I clicked on my mail icon and got the installation wizard screen. I went through with the installation, despite being worned that the certificate for a strange server "plesk" had expired. I got my mailboxes back and the ability to read my messages, but now if I try a restart I get a message that Mail can't connect my ISP' mail server and that I have to close Mail manually. I find I can "ping" the server with the utility. I have had a screen warning that my privacy might be invaded. What should I do?

It's a POP account. I decided to clean up my mailbox today after noticing the computer was real slow after USA Today started sending their daily top stories with new graphics. I upgraded to Maverick OS X 10.9.5, numbers spreadsheet is saved. Upon re-opening, it appears to be frozen, a warning "file is invalid as index.xml file is missing". I checked, and the file is not "locked". This appears to occur only with using the new numbers app. When I open previous spreadsheets from old iWorks, no such problem occurs.
How did you resolve your problem?
Would appreciate any help here.

Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.
