When trying to do a software update I get a progress window showing "connecting to the update server" with the blue progress bar continuially scrolling. It never connects. What's my problem?
The question has as much detail as I know to give.
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.<br />
You may need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
Do a clean (re-)install:
* Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You do not need to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

HT201210 why is there an error occurring when trying to do a software update ios6 on iphone 4s
why is there an error occurring when trying to do a software update ios6 on iphone 4s??
You might find this article helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
It has the error range of 3000's which states
Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes. -
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem? I get "The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1100.)" when trying to check for softward updates on my iMac. I have the latest version of Mountain Lion installed.
Apparently a server overload > NSURLErrorDomain error -1100
Try again later. -
Client still trying to use obsolete Software Update server
I was experimenting with Mac OS X Server, including the Software Update Server and setting up managed client computers. After some testing, I decided that Mac OS X Server was too complex for our needs and switched the server back to standard Mac OS X. I also removed the server from the Directory Access settings on my client machine, and rebooted.
I thought this was enough to clean up my client machine, but it is still trying to access the Software Update Server on my test server. I can tell this by running softwareupdate from the command line:
dalba ~> softwareupdate --list
Software Update Tool

I can't figure out where this setting is being stored so that I can erase it. I've already tried using the Restore Default feature of Software Update Enabler <http://www.wiretapped.net/~proton/suenabler/>, but that hasn't fixed the problem, even after resetting all three preference domains (Current User on This Computer, Current User on Any Computer, and All Users on This Computer) and restarting. I've searched through /Library/Preferences for the string "purr.local" and didn't get any hits.
Any clues as to where this setting is being stored, or how to erase it?

PowerBook G4 17" Mac OS X (10.4.8)I think I just solved my own problem.
There are settings in /Library/Managed Preferences that aren't reset by Software Update Enabler. In particular, I had a file named "/Library/Managed Preferences/samalone/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" that contained the obsolete server setting for Software Update. In my case, I don't want to have managed preferences anymore, so I just deleted the entire /Library/Managed Preferences folder and restarted.

Just today, when tried to do a software update ....
Was trying to do asoftware update both on My Imac (wired) broadband connection and wireless with Macbook there was a note stating "The file index-Lion-Snow Leopard-Leopard.Merge-1.sucatalog" could not be found on the server "WSSCAN.Apple.com
I did the network diagnostic on both the imac and notebook and everything with my interenet connection was all working good using the network diagnostics.
Can anyone shed some light to this as this incident only occurred today Sept4, 2011 unlike before when software updates were just a breeze to to.The same issue has been reported by others, such as -

Getting this error when trying to run latest software update on MacBook Pro
Everytime I try to run the update, it starts to download and then I get this error:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1102.)(102)
I'm not too sure what it means, or how to fix it. If someone could help me out, that would be great!
Thanks!You might try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Then download and install: OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo). -
HT2489 How do I fix this error when trying to install a software update?
The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by “Apple”.
I'd try updating using a .dmg installer downloaded from the Apple Website:

I have tried to uninstall verion 3.6 and reinstall. Also, I re-imaged the workstation, but it still does not work. The OS is Windows 7 32-bit. This same process works automatically on an XP workstation. In fact, the machine I re-imaged was an XP box, but it did not work on this particular machine. Hence, the reason for the new image.
I am exporting the file from TxEIS (in the Firefox web browser) and it does not download properly. Acccording to Firefox documentation, it is supposed to automatically recognize the file extension. I have not experienced this on any other machine within our environment. Other users are performing this same process with no problems. The browers settings are exactly the same as the machines that are working right.

I'm not sure what the Google thing was but it was just a box with the Google symbol and it had an x at the top so I closed out of it thinking that it had nothing to do with the most visited and etc. I have restarted my computer and I still can't get it to appear, but when I go on the other accounts of the computer I can. Help?

Leopard Software Updates Server goes insane
I erase installed our Xserve to Mac OS X Server v10.5.1. I tried to start the SUS (Software Update Server) with the old Tiger SUS store. It didn't seem to like it and began downloading all the updates again. Fair enough. I think the migration guide mentions that Leopard may do this. Next when all seemed well the SUS began deleting the index.sucatalog file. In fact it trashed the whole catalogs directory and begins downloading stuff again. I tried trashing everything in the SUS store (excluding the Leopard SoftwareUpdateServerStats executable) to get it to start from scratch but this didn't help. Got the exact same behaviour. I am loathed to cure the illness by killing the patient.
Here are some seemingly related error messages from the SUS log:
2007-11-27 16:29:08.075 swupd_syncd46:3d17 ERROR: __CFURLCache::StepSQLStatement - step failed (exceed retry) - ErrCode: 5
2007-11-27 16:29:10.064 swupd_syncd46:20b ERROR: __CFURLCacheSelectAndCreateResponse - failed to select, retry exceeded - ErrCode: 5
Anyone else ran into this? I'm not sure if this is a Leopard bug or if I have simply driven the service insane. I need to know how to reset it. I've had a brief look at the config files in in /etc/swupd but I'm not clear if something in here is screwed up. Submitted a call via email to AppleCare but so far no response.
Thanks in advance. For what its worth I'm seeing the same problem on our test 10.5.1 server. Although I'm getting the error without first trying to use the old tiger sus store. I'm seeing the same error messages you mentioned in my log. Software update from what I can tell has been trying to download the updates now for several days, always gets stuck on one (it varies most of the time, but the final cut pro 4.5 update has been a popular one lately), and then refuses to go any further. Stopping an restarting the software update server usually causes sus to erase what it has downloaded (to the /usr/share/swupd/html/content/downloads folder) and start over! Talk about killing my internet connection...I've been trying to be patient and just let it finish updating (so it will actually create the proper aliases in the /usr/share/swupd/html/content/catalogs folder) but it's never finishing. I've made it to about 8.8gb so far but I'm sure that's not the end. I've heard others mention that there is something in the neighborhood of 13gb of updates. Incidentally, according to server admin, all updates are copied and enabled, which of course is not true. Sorry I don't have a resolution, but hopefully through sharing our experiences we may be able to narrow down the problem.

Stuck in "contacting the ipad software update server"
I'm trying to restore my ipad but i can't because im stuck in "contacting the ipad software update server". i have been waiting for several minutes but still nothing.
what should i do?
i have an ipad 3Hello vladdyak47,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
The following article should help to resolve your issue with updating your iPad. Take a look at the section "Download takes a long time, or you can't reach update server."

When I am trying to update my iPad 2 via syncing it with my PC, I get the following error message: "iPad software update server could not be contacted." Any ideas?
Try rebooting your router and or cable modem. Unplug it/them for about 30 seconds and then plug back in. See if it works then. Reboot your iPad as well.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up. -
I use a Macbook Pro 13" mid 2010 on Mavericks and I've tried using the Boot Camp assistant to download support software for Windows 7. This gives the error "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
Further, I tried to separately download Boot Camp 4 and 5. When I do this and try to install from Windows 7, it says that this version of Boot Camp is not for this computer and doesn't install. The result is that I have Windows 7 working and installed, but am unable to use the trackpad to rightclick, brightness settings, etc.
Please help!
ThanksYou need to run Bootcamp Assistant and select only the menu item to download the Windows Support Software. Follow the instructions. The download servers are extremely slow therefore it may take several hours to get the download.
