When trying to open browser, keep getting message that it's already open, or to log of and restart PC

when finished browsing the web, i close Firefox and put my computer to low power, or sleep, hours later , turn it on , click on the Firefox Icon , and get a message that mozilla firefox is already running, and if there is a problem restart the PC.
this goes on almost every day for the last 6 to 7 months, and i keep it updated all the time. I was ready to give Mozilla Firefox up, but I don't like Microsoft Internet Explorer, so I put-up with the problem.
any help will be very appreciated,
