When trying to run after install: iTunes has encountered a problem and...

I just got my new Nano yesterday. I downloaded and installed the latest version fine, but when I try to run the app I get the the patented Windows error:
ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Send - Don't send
So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, same thing.
Then I tried to install two earlier versions of 6. But I get the same exact error.
Also, when I try to open Quicktime. Nothing happens. All I get is the hour glass for about 2 seconds. But quicktime does not open.

I tried to delete it from my computer but it won't let me it says setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. now when I put a cd in to down load on itunes my musicmatch jukebox comes up automaticly and freezes. hmmmm. i'm no great expert on MusicMatch installation troubleshooting. but we might be able to stop MusicMatch launching for you when a CD is inserted.
it sounds like there is a Windows AutoPlay setting on the CD drive, so that MusicMatch is set to launch every time you insert a Music CD. so let's try changing that setting.
in "My Computer", right-click on the CD drive and select "properties". click on the "AutoPlay" tab. in the pulldown menu, select "Music CD".
do you have MusicMatch set to launch? if so, change the action to something else (or select "prompt me each time ..." instead), and click OK.
does MusicMatch still launch when you insert a CD after doing that?

We just allowed the iTunes update, then when we went to start iTunes we keep getting this message: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I've tried to follow some of the help documents (deleted SCinfo.sidb from: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1776), deleted a local docuemnts temp directory, made sure QuickTime does work on it's own.
My setup had iTunes on the C drive originally but over a year or two ago now I moved that to an external drive, that is still attached. I'm leary to uninstall and reinstall as I don't know if I'll loose any movies/music/audiobooks/podcasts/apps I have in there (my new iTunes folder was named F:/New-iTunes and has worked without issue since day 1 until this update this week.)
I need to get our iPod(s) up to date with media before we go out of town later this weekend. Help please.

In order to see the error repeated, I had to reenable Bonjour. First I just manually started the service, then iTunes and no issue. iTunes worked. Then I set the service to manually start, rebooted, started Bonjour then iTunes. iTunes worked again. Finally, set Bonjour to Automatic, rebooted then tried to start iTunes and ERROR.
iTunes won't start if Bonjour set to Automatic.
The error listed in the message box is:

  • I have installed iTunes on my new windows 7 dell laptop every time I start it it comes up with an error saying itunes has encountered a problem and it closes ? any answers have tried command prompt reset and it has not resolved it also un/reinstalled

I have installed iTunes on my new laptop OS Windows 7. I have two iphones, a 3rd gen nano and an ipod classic.
Since the install yesterday I keep getting an error message which itunes has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a soluion is available.
I have un and re installed and followed a command promt reset.
I still have the problem. Any ideas?

Ok. So I created a new account and iTunes did work. I went back into my original account and tried again and just to be more clear, after I open iTunes it asks me to accept or decline the agreement, I do that, then it says "updating library", and then one all the bars are full it closes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."
okay, let's start working through the user-account-specific causes of this message.
one possibility is damaged itunes preference files in the user account in which you're getting the crash. (there's a different set of those in each different user account, which is how we can get crashes limited to a single user account.)
if that is what is going on, we can often get past this by rebuilding the preference files in the account that is crashing. for the preference files rebuild technique, see my reply to kusma in this post:

    Hello there, ytnoj.
Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes can be a tricky endeavor and must be done in a very specific way. The following Knowledge Base article provides the step-by-step of the process:

Well I was able to successfully revert back to iTunes8. Here's my steps:
    1. In Add/Remove Programs I deleted all Apple products (iTunes, QuickTime, Safari, Bonjour, etc.)
    2. I then check C:\Program Files\ and made sure all folders were deleted (QuickTime, etc.)
    3. I then ran a Registry Cleaner program to make sure all entries from Apple products were removed.
    4. I then rebooted my PC
    5. I then downloaded iTunes8.0.2 from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/itunes802forwindows.html
    6. After it installed it said it could use my iTunes library file because it was created with a newer version. So I re-created my library by following these steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
It took some time but iTunes is now back up and running. And I have all my playlists, etc. I haven't tried to sync anything yet. I'm just thrilled to have my iTunes back!

  • I When ever I try to open iTunes, it immediately freezes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I am using a Windows 7 laptop, 64 bit. When ever I try to open iTunes, it immediately freezes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have tried uninstalling then reinstalling, and also going back to previous versions. Any ideas as to how to fix this? Thanks!!

You need to remove all installer file, uninstall iTunes and all related programs, then do a clean install.
    Try the following steps:
    1. Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.
    2. You should remove all instances of iTunes and the rest of the components listed below:
it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes.
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:
    iTunes
    QuickTime
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Follow the instructions from Apple article listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to remove all components
    3. Reboot your computer. Next, download iTunes from here:http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and install from scratch

  • Can't install iTunes, "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I just got a new Dell. My old iTunes 5.0 wouldn't install, so I downloaded the new 7.0, and am having an issue. I have tried all of the support recommendations on this site, including deleting everything and reinstalling, changing the audo and speaker settings, QTime settings, etc (although when I try to uninstall Quicktime it won't let me). I even did the MSCONFIG and tried to do a selective start up with just iTunes. I initally was getting the Ipod Service error that people have posted about, but once I deleted my old Ipod Updater, that stopped, but now this is what happens: The install appears to go through just fine, and says it has completed. But when I try to click the icon, it says "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close". Any ideas? This is very frustrating. My daughter just got an Ipod for Christmas and is terribly upset she can't use it.
    Thanks

I finally got it to work. Uninstall quicktime and itunes. Go to quicktime and just install quicktime and then go to itunes and install itunes. This solved my problem. Yeh. After 3 days I finally got it. Good luck!

  • ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close when adding movie files

So.. I haven't done anything recently with installing any new versions of itunes or anything of the such. Just one day whenever I tried to add .mp4 files (videos) on my ipod using Itunes, it crashes with the error message "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." and it closes the application. I can add music files just fine.
anyone else having this issue? If so, can you let me know what you have done to fix this problem?
Also, I got fed up today and decided to uninstall Itunes and Quicktime and then downloaded the most recent off Apple's site and that still didn't work.
    Please help....
    Ipod Video 80GB   Windows XP

One other thing.. all the movies that I currently have in Itunes that once worked no longer work either. It crashes when I attempt to play them as well in Itunes.

  • Cannot open itunes, "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I have tried numerous to times to download itunes update after having ipod display indicating not all songs have been transfered because of old version. I've tried disabling McAfee and getting windows updates, (I'm running XP)When I look in programs, ipod for updater it lists both 2004-08-06 and 2005-10-12. The error message reads" itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" Quicktime does not open either and gives the same error mess. Will uninstalling and reinstalling itunes help? and if so, I loose my entire collection right?

    hi daytimer!
The error message reads" itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" Quicktime does not open either
hmmm. that strongly suggests that the itunes problem is due to a broken quicktime. let's try a careful standalone QT 7.0.3 reinstall first.
download and save the QT installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off all antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
does the install go through okay? if so, does itunes launch properly after that?

  • ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry

After upgrading to iTunes9.0 I can no longer use the application. Everytime I try to open it I get an error message that iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I've deleted it and re-installed following all the troubleshooting steps in various FAQ documents. I've disconnected from the internet and re-connected. I've completely removed iTunes and QuickTime from my PC. I've changed out IE handles cookies. I've changed audio output to headphone speakers. I've stopped Apple Moblie services. I've cleaned out Windows Installer. I feel like I've tried everything. I'm at a total loss.
The program installed properly and will open. It immediately tries to connect to the iTunes Store. The progress bar at the top shows 1/2 complete when the error message pops up.
    Any suggestions?

  • Itunes has encountered a problem and has to close.

When I opened iTunes the first time today, I had no problem, but then I went to the store, then my computer froze, so I closed it.. And now I downloaded the update and whenever I try to open it a box pops up saying "iTunes has encountered a problem and must close.. " Or at least something like that.
You also might find this information helpful:
AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 9.1.0.79 ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000000dd
and yes, my quicktime works fine..

Yup, I've got the same problem although it's installed but now it just won't open and says it has a problem and has to close instantly the second you click a shortcut.
    hi Frenchy!
you don't say explicitly so i'll ask you too. have you tried this procedure yet?
b noir, "itunes has encountered a problem. help please?" #8, 04:10pm Sep 18, 2005 CDT
make sure you follow the instructions precisely. if for any reason you can't complete the cleanup instructions, post back to describe the problem.
if your itunes still isn't launching after you try that, we'd better check to see if you've got a rare registry problem that can also produce the same error message.
we diagnose that by creating a new user account (with full administrative privileges). you can do that in your "user accounts" control panel. there's help documentation on it to the left of the screen. while you're in there, also switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now log on to the new user account. can you successfully launch itunes from inside there?
keep us posted on your progress.

  • "error Report" "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" HELP!!

every time i try to load itunes i get this message
"error Report" "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close". i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. i tried removing quicktime through my control pannel and then reinstalling. ive tried running scans and pretty much anything else i can think of. at this point i might just return the ipod. anyone have any ideas.

Have you tried uninstalling Quicktime? If not try that. If you are still having problems then do this.
    1. Uninstall both iTunes and Quicktime.
    2. Delete the folders iTunes and Quicktime where installed in.
    3. Reboot.
    4. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<<Your User ID>>\Application Data\Apple Computer\
    5. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<<Your User ID>>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer
    6. Delete if in your My Documents folder there is a folder called My Music with a folder in it called iTunes. Delete or rename the iTunes folder.
    7. Reboot.
    8. Turn off all anti virus and firewall software.
    9. Re-install iTuens.
If you still get an error after that your Windows install is hosed. You will need to format and re-install it first.
