When updating Flash Player, how do I stop McAfee from installing?

Flash Player updates automatically reinstall McAfee and as this conflicts with my own security system I don't want it to automatically install but don't know how to stop it.  Can someone help?

There's a checkbox BEFORE you download Flash Player, that prevents the download and install of McAfee. Uncheck it and it won't download.

  • Script Error when updating Flash Player

I have exhausted the online documentation. This started several months ago. The way that Flash Player updated on my machine changed. I am running XP using IE8. Everytime I try to update Flash Player I get a script error right about the time that the download completes and it is starting to install. The actual script error varies from one attempt to another. The latest error is 'ActionLaunchAdobe' is undefined. Scripting is enabled per the help documents. I have never had to uninstall a previous version before and I'm hesitant to do it now because my current version is 11.4.402.287 and it works. My concern is that if I can't update to new versions eventually there may be problems. I have not made configuration changes to this computer or installed new software for quite a while. The Flash Player update mechanism used to never open a browser window but since I have had this problem that's the first thing it does and takes me to the Flash Player update site. Then the never ending fun begins always ending with a script error and failed install. PLEASE HELP!

If you have "Allow Adobe to install updates (recommended)" selected in your Flash Player control panel (in the Advanced tab), you should be getting our silent auto updates.  The problem appears to be occurring for you when a major update occurs.  You have a couple of options here.  First, you can visit the link below whenever this occurs and download the offline installer files that should work properly.  The second option is to ignore these update notifications and after 30 days we'll install it automatically (and silently.)

  • When updating Flash Player

I get regular updates for Flash Player. After updating usually within minutes, a hijack attempt is made to reroute my browser through Beyond the Network America. I am sure these attempts occur only after updating Flash. Here is my hypothesis:
I routinely run Peerblock to block hacking attempts on my computer.
I block countries domains such as China, Iran, Russia etc.
When running Peerblock I can see if software is attempting to redirect my Internet activity through Beyond the Network America or anywhere else.
When my system is infected, I run ADWCleaner to remove the infection. ADWCleaner finds the following: \AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\z2x8sary.default\prefs.js
ADWCleaner requires me to reboot my system to complete the removal and my system operates normally without any redirection attempts until I update Flash. In fact, Flash usually indicates an update is available soon after I remove the infection.
I suspected Flash and would not update it for about 1.5 months. No re-infection occurred. Then yesterday, I decided it was time to determine if Flash was the culprit so I updated it and sure enough; once I did, a hijack attempt to reroute my traffic through Beyond the Network America occurred again.
The update file downloaded from Adobe's website is: install_flashplayer13x32_mssd_aaa_aih
Can you confirm my hypothesis or otherwise show Adobe is not including some adware/malware that is attempting to reroute Internet traffic through Beyond the Network America?
    Thank you for your assistance.

    Use the offline installer(s):
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
They don't have to download anything during the install process.
If your system is still being hacked after running one or both of those, you've got other problems.

    Hello alyssa268
If you are getting an error code when trying to update, check it against the article below to resolve it, as it could be an issue with security software or even a USB connection issue.

Even though I move it to the trash, it keeps showing up on my desktop after every restart. It's like a zombie that just won't die.

Maybe it is not Firefox that is doing that, but some security software that is restoring the desktop to its previous appearance.

  • Be careful updating Flash Player !

    Hi
Just a warning - watch carefully what you do when updating Flash Player.
My 9 month old hit the space button on what I can only assume was a dialogue box asking whether I wanted to install some unwanted McAfee Security scan plus garbage,
It of course is selected as the default - thats what everyonewould want isnt it ?  - random garbage software on their computer.
I have since successfully uninstalled it I hope.
So my love for adobe grows as you can tell from this rant.
First they insist that I register Lightroom only to then get hacked, expose my personal infromation to god knows who and have my email address consequently inundated with all sorts of unsavoury SPAM.
Now they sneak garbage like this in when Im not looking for what should be a simple update.
Adobe are approaching the hights of EA these days. I will never buy adobe again !
    Thanks for listening.

Nobody is happy with the 3rd-party software Adobe bundles with its software updates.
However, it is very easy to get around that.  I have installed, updated, and used Flash Player since version 6, and I have never gotten any unwanted software onto my computer.  How to:
install the updates manually when they become available
use the offline installers that are not bundled with any 3rd-party software
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)

  • After a mac update; flash player asked to be installed.  Install successful but application will not work.

    Hello,
After a Mac update, flash player (along with silverlight) asked to be installed when I tried to watch video content or play games.  I installed flash player and it reports being successful and appears in my applications.  However, I cannot watch videos or play games, every time I am asked to install flash player again and again and again.  I suspect this has something to do with plugins but I am not sure.  I have un-installed the program and reinstalled but it still will not work.  I check my security settings and it does allow plugins.  I erased my temporary internet files.  I don't know what else to do.  Any help would be appreciated!  This is incredibly frustrating.  Thank you

Thank you for responding!  I am using a macbook pro 2011, 2.2ghz, intel
core i7, 16gb - version 10.9.5.   I have not intentionally installed any ad
blocking software; intact I am inundated with it most times.  My online
school work required that I disable pop up blockers and all was well until
an update a few weeks ago for both security and operating system.  To the
best of my knowledge I am allowing pop ups and plugins but this may be
where the trouble is.  I am unsure, honestly of what security is running
besides what I find in the system preference/security tab.  Thank you again
for responding and any help is most appreciated.

When searching in Safari, how do I stop it from guessing what I am typing?

Go to Settings>General>Keyboard>Auto Correct>Off.  This will also turn off spell check. You can also tap the X next to the word that Safari suggests to get rid of the word and keep typing what you want.

  • After a tryout with AdBlock, the videos on Facebook, on BBC and on some others websites stopped working and there's always a message asking me to install the latest version of the Flash Player. Even though it's already installed. How can I fix that?

After a tryout with AdBlock, the videos on Facebook, on BBC and on some others websites stopped working and there's always a message asking me to install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. Even though it's already installed the situation remains the same since the last month.
Can I fix that just doing the upgrade for the Yosemite?

Well, after hours of trying to figure it out I gave up and un-installed and re-installed that last verion of Adobe Flash Player and now it seems I can play games again in Messenger. Everything else had been fine just that. I can only figure it was because it was having a hard time updating the first time and took me 3 tries. So even though it said it was installed, apparently it wasn't done correctly.
Though when I couldn't figure out what was wrong at first I looked and checked to see all the things were enabled that were supposed to be and they were.
I even tried to go to the Adobe site and download the last version I had and couldn't find it. Kept coming up with the new version. Others said if you download a particular older version it may not have all the security features in it.
This really gets to be a bit much, especially when you're by yourself and have only a smattering of knowledge of technical things.
Thanks fore responding to my question.

  • I have tried to update flash player and when I put in my password, it is rejected.  I have recently updated my email address and changed my password, but adobe will not accept.  Can I get help, please, to update flash player?

I have tried to update flash player and when I put in my password, it is rejected.  I have changed my email and password and have so informed adobe, but I am still unable to install flash player update.  How can I update adobe flash?

This password prompt is presented by your operating system, and is intended to keep you from accidentally installing software.
If this is your personal machine and you don't need a password to log into the computer when it first starts up, you can probably leave the password blank and click OK to get past this prompt.  If this is your personal machine and your normal password isn't working, check to make sure that CAPS LOCK is off, and type the password carefully.
If this is your work machine and it's asking for an Administrator password, well, you'll need to have a conversation with your friendly IT person.
