When using EA6400 as an access point only, certain features lost

I've set up my EA6400 and have it connected to my Verizon MW424WR(Gigabit) and it works fine as an access point and the Twonky Server uses the USB drive I have attached to the router's USB port. Problems:
1)I can not use the linksyssmartwifi link for management, I have to use the IP(set for 192.168.1.50) for this. When trying to register/login, the Linksys end is trying to find a Linksys router but can not and will not allow any action.
2)Although Twonky will use the attached HD, I can not share the device over the home (Windows) network. I've tried various incantations of the IP \\192.168.1.50\(whatever share name I can think of) with no avail.
3)Using the Linksys admin, the Device List is incomplete. Devices connected wirelessly  such as my iPod, Roku, Sony Media Player and WD HD TV Live do not show as wirelessly connected and do not have an IP listed.
4)Is there any point in using the Media Prioritization settings since no routing is done by an access point. Or will it actually prioritize the wireless connection.
BTW, the Verizon router can not be set in bridge mode so I have to use the router as an access point to accomplish what I wish.
TIA,
Randy

Some applications and router features require the use of the WAN port. If the router is set up for LAN to LAN AP mode only, then those features won't work in this mode. Only Router mode.
If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm and http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Then connect the router in router mode using the WAN port to the ISP modem, then features and apps should work.

AND also to check with provider for instruction how to.. WTH kind of support is that>??

  • WRT54G as access point only

    Hi!
I searched through the forums and could not find the exact answer I was looking for.
I have a client who has an exisiting network.  They wanted to add wireless capabilities and bought 2 WRT54G for me to install as access points only.  Their exisiting network runs internal IPs of 10.0.0.x.  They want the wireless clients to get an IP in that subnet.
Will the WRT54G do that?  I cannot seem to make it work.  It is easy to hang it off the network on the WAN port and DHCP 192.168.1.x addresses to wireless clients, but that is not what they want.
If I plug the network into the LAN side of the WRT54G, turn DHCP on the WRT54G off, they do not get IP addresses.
I am thinking that I need to use the WAP54G to make it simple, but am I missing something?
    Thanks!

    Hi
Sorry, did not provide enough information.
The client has an exisiting network comprised of Cisco Routers and Switches.  DHCP is handled by the Cisco Router.  They bought the WRT54G without consulting with us first (we are the reseller and IT consultants) and want the WRT54G to act as a AP.  They want the wireless clients to get IPs handed out by the Cisco Router.  Basically they want the WRT54G to act like a WAP54G.
The client thought that by turning off DHCP and plugging the wired network into the LAN side of the WRT54G, the wireless clients/traffic would just be passed to the Cisco router.  I dont think that will work.
Here is a basic look at the network.
    T1 line-----Cisco 2811 router---Cisco Switch-----wired clients and wireless clients.
I could PDF a Visio if that would help.
I am just thinking that this is a waste of time to try to get this to work when the WAP54G will do what we want.  But thought I would ask.  Also, the 2 APs are to serve wireless clients in seperate parts of the building.  They will have seperate SSIDs and will not be in a bridge mode.
    Thanks
    Chris

  • How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

  • Make WRT54G an Access Point Only

I need to make my WRT54G an access point only. I tried information contained on Linksys site, but I can't seem to get it to work.
I can access my wireless router and disable DHCP fine. But when I try to change the wireless routers IP, I'm instructed to refresh/renew. Once that's done, I can no longer access the router at the old or new address.
My Netgear wired router has a range of 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.50.
    I changed the WRT54G to 192.168.0.49, but I can't access it.
I should note that my Netgear wired router already has a Cisco router attached to it for home access to my company via VPN and VOIP. Also, the wireless router is connected to the Netgear router via a linksys switch, but I don't think any of that should really matter ....

When you use OWA in something other than IE, you're using OWA lite and no--it is not possible to do either in OWA lite (well, new Exchange stuff makes my answer a little less emphatic but still: pretty much no). Thanks Microsoft. But this guy made it possible to mark unread/read and select all/none:

  • Using routers as wireless access point

    Hello,
i am thinking of buying Linksys x2000 , WAG160N or any other you suggest to use as a wireless access point. Is it possible?
My setup is : I get my internet from my neighbor by ethernet cable from his router. My house is two-storied and ethernet cable comes to top left corner of first floor and the devices(two notebook) are on the bottom right corner at the second floor , insulation greatly reduces the signal strength.
    Thank you.

You can use any other routers, do not use X2000 or WAG models.  I think they get Internet from an RJ11 connection.  Use an Access Point.  WAP series.

  • Using WRT54GR as a Wireless Access Point only

I have a WRT610N as my main router. I want to use an existing WRT54GR purely as a wireless access point and ethernet switch. Any suggestions on how best to do that so I can still access the WRT54GR to make configuration changes? Right now I have the network functionality working by simply not using the Internet port on the WRT54G but by going to 192.168.1.1 I can only get to the WRT610N.

    (Restarting this thread).
I made the change you suggested and statically assigned 192.168.1.200 to the WRT54GR. I can reliably access it through this IP address. I connected it to the rest of my network by using one of the 4 switch ports (not the Internet port). I disabled DHCP on it and configured the Wireless settings to be the same (same SSID and Security Settings) as my other wireless router.
What I'm finding is that devices in my house won't assoicate with it. I tried changing the SSID to a different value; devices were able to see the new SSID but when I entered the pasword they told me that no DHCP server could be detected. A wired device that I plugged into another of the 4 switch ports on the WRT54GR was able to pick up an IP address from the main router just fine so I know that basic connectivity is OK.
To achieve what I want (i.e. the WRT54GR just acts as a wireless base station to extend wireless coverage in the house), do I need to connect the WRT54GR to the rest of the network using the Internet port rather than a switch port? If so, what configuration settings do I need to set up so that all the devices can get their IP address from the main router?

  • Packet drop when clients moving from one Access point to another

    HI  All ,
I am new to wireless . I am using  WS-SVC-WISM-1-K9  wism module and using 5 Access points . When my clients are moving from one access point to another we are getting packet drops .
Kindly anyone suggest me what all configuration i need to verify on the controller  for Proper client roaming so that i can resolve my issues..
Please let me know in case of any explanations requiered .
    Thanks  in Advance !!!
    Regards
    Angus

For radius authenticated SSIDs, you need WPA2-aes or wpa1-tkip-CCKM. It depends on what the client supports.
For pre-shared key, any WPA should be decent enough for roaming speed.
If you're on WEP ... no comment.
If you covered the above point, check if it's not a coverage problem. If the 2 APs coverage zone are not overlapping there will be a hole where you don't have signal and logically will have packet drops.

  • Trying to use Airport Express as access point.

I want to use an AE as an access point to extend my wifi.  The location has ethernet.  My primary router is a Lynksys E2000.  I set the AE up to extend wifi, bridge mode, PW's same as existing network, plug ethernet into LAN of the AE.  It reports all is well for about two minutes, then the unit flashes yellow and Airport Utility loses contact.  Have tried new ethernet cables, other locations, etc.  Resets and power cycles allow me to see the unit again, but the unit always ends up dropping off the network and flashing yellow after a very short time.  To be clear, I want to use a wireless device in the location that would talk to the AE that would pass it to the ethernet.  I have read the forum Q & A's and tried several of the solutions, but end up with the unit flashing yellow and the Utility asking me if I want to forget the AE. There must be something I'm missing in the setup or the unit is bad.  Any help would be appreciated.

I set the AE up to extend wifi
The "extend" setting on the AirPort Express would only be used if it was connected to another router using wireless.  You are using Ethernet.
Configure the Express to "create a wireless network" using the exact same wireless network name, same wireless security settings and same wireless network password as your main router.
As a final step, make sure that the AirPort Express is configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
Power down both the main router and Express after the AirPort has been configured. Then power up the main router first for a minute or two, then power up the Express.

  • Will older Airport Express Base Station A-1084 work with new AirPort Extreme? I want to use it as an access point for my ps3 for watching movies and just connectin to Internet.

I am lookin to plug in an older model a-1084 next to my playstation for a dedicated access point to avoid dropping so many connections since I am at the furthest point of my wifi coverage. Will it work or not? It would be connecting through a AirPort Extreme bought in 2011 -2012.

This will work if you plan to connect the AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection back to the AirPort Extreme.
But, it won't work if you plan to connect the Express using wireless only. That's because your older version of the Expess does not have a setting to "extend a wireless network", so it's not possible to "extend" the wireless signal using wireless only.
If you added a "new" AirPort Express, that version does have the capability to "extend a wireless network" from the AirPort Extreme using wireless only.
Keep in mind that to "extend" using wireless, the Express will need to be located where it can receive a strong signal from the AirPort Extreme, since the Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives. In other words, the Express can make the signal go further, but it cannot make the signal go faster.

    Hi Richard,
    The WS-PWR-PANEL only supports AP's with a single B-radio,so I think this will be problematic. Have a look;

    1130AG Series with 2 Radios - No
    1200 Series with 2 Radios - No
All Access Points with 1 Radio - Yes (Only with 802.11b radio.)

    The WS-PWR-PANEL is EOS/EOL as of May 25, 2006. Have a look at the migration options;

  • I have a problem when using Google Maps, at some point my computer blanks the window and says there's a problem with display drivers, and it has recovered, but it doesn't. Problem doesn't happen with Int Explorrer, so I do not believe it is the computer

When using google maps through Firefox, after asking for a place which is not the general North America section which routinely comes up, the firefox screen goes white, with a narrow banner at the top. A message appears in the lower right corner which says something about display drivers having had a problem, but now have recovered. However the display doesn't recover and the banner message is that Firefox is not responding. When I go to restart Firefox if I go to the restore point, the page is still frozen out.
I do not believe it is a problem with my computer because it doesn't happen if I use I.E. to go to google maps, then G-maps works normally.
This phenomenon did not happen before the latest upgrade to either Google or Firefox. I have used Fiefox for a number of years and also Google Maps on previous computers and on this one, and not had this before.
This is a relatively young computer (Asus EeSlate 121) less than a year old. I have used Firefox since I bought it and until recently had no problem with Google Maps.

I solved it myself, after the "note" which came back from FF/Mozilla just as I finished my message, commenting on what it was that my system had , I wnnt back to check my plug-ins etc. I downloaded the latest Java, BOTH 32bit AND 64 bit versions and latest Firefox.
    Now all is working.
    Thanks,

  • Can I use iMac as wireless access point?

My network equipment: ADSL modem (which has no integrated wireless) with Buffalo AirStation (802.11b) wireless access point
I have had a reasonably stable broadband situation for a long time (hence the ancient equipment!) and have been able to access the internet via my ADSL modem/ethernet router using ethernet wires from my iMac G5, and two desktop PCs running Linux and Windows. I have also been able to access via the wireless Buffalo Airstation on various laptops over the years. My wife's brand new MacBook has been connecting wirelessly for a couple of weeks.
    Until last night...
Then the AirPort signal dropped to zero and a neighbour's network was suggested as the network I need. I looked at the Buffalo Airstation and there was a flashing red light (and flashing green ones as well). Being an experienced chap I turned it off and turned it back on! For about five minutes the Airport signal was back. Then it disappeared with flashing lights as before. Repeated a few times with no change...
I don't know if the problem is related to the neighbour's wireless signal or not but I decided that it could be the AirStation getting flaky so I tried creating a network on the iMac with a view to sharing its wired connection.
I can log on to this iMac network from the MacBook and I have changed the Systems Preferences to share the connection on the iMac but the MacBook says it is not connected to the internet. Anyone got any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Should I be entering the ADSL modem router in the internet connection details (which is what I have done) or should I be entering something else?
Is what I am trying to do even possible? I haven't found any exact parallels in the documentation or the forums...
    Any help greatly appreciated!

Does the Buffalo AirStation allow you to change the channel being used?
You can share an Internet connection over Ethernet to other computers using Airport. You set it up in System Preferences Sharing pane Internet tab (if using Tiger). On the MacBook, you should just use the default +Configure Using DHCP+ setting. Be sure you clicked to Start the sharing on the iMac. On the MacBook, be sure you select the wireless network that is the iMac's name.
