iMessage does not use call minutes or SMS message quota in your plan. It does use data when when the phone is connected to cellular data. When you use WiFi, it's completely free.

iMessage uses data, just like an email, if I can use that analogy. It will not count as SMS, however I have read somewhere where some people have reported getting SMS charges when using iMessage. I believe it is impossible though, unless the message does not go through and you have send as SMS checked in settings if the iMessage fails.

Why am I charged for texts that include photos or video when using iMessage to send or receive with other Apple products? Should the senders use an email address instead of my iPhone number? I have ATT with pay as you go texting. I'm only charged when there's a photo or video attached.

If you still can't send or receive iMessages
Ensure that iMessage is turned on in Settings > Messages.
To send and receive iMessages, your device must have a valid cellular or Wi-Fi data connection.

iMessage registration validates your Apple ID for use with iMessage. If you are unable to activate iMessage, follow this article.
If an iMessage cannot be sent, it will be resent using SMS or MMS, depending on the content. You can turn this behavior on or off in Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Carrier messaging rates may apply.
Verify that the Apple ID or phone number is listed in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
Step 4 above describes how to turn off having failed iMessages send as texts to prevent this from happening.

Thanks Eric, but that was already turned on. I just now tried turning it off and on again, no change. Actually, I"m more interested in seeing the names than the pictures. I now only see the phone numbers and generic avatars where pics would be.

It leaves them on the old computer. Nothing will be changed on it.

Check Settings>Messages>Show Subject Field and make sure it's set to "Off".

When using iMessage, they use data. If you are connected to wifi, it will use your wifi data, which will have no affect on your cellular account. If you are not connected to wifi, you will use cellular data, which is charged against your carrier account.

I'm all set to join Verizon for the first time, except for one thing. Unlike Sprint (terrible but improving speeds on their network), I see that my bill will be a bit higher with Verizon, which is not a problem since everyone I know (on Verizon) gets much faster speeds when they use their phone to get on the internet. When you are on wifi the cellular data symbol should not be present on the information bar on the top of your phone. it should just show the wifi symbol.
Now a good thing to do is go into your phones settings and have it only update over wifi, the same for your apps. This way there are no surprises. Secondly turn "cellular data off" when at home to just use wifi. Ask yourself why would you pay verizon for data usage over your own wifi connection?
Verizon since they went to the limited data structure has been banging people with high overage fees and its a huge money maker for them, you will never get any truthful answer from their customer no-support. One from another won't even give you the same screen read answers. pity I must say. Just do the suggestions I made and you should be ok. Also turn off global roaming for data to only use verizons network. Personally T-Mobile has unlimited 4G LTE which has been clocked faster than all the carriers. But alas the service is not everywhere. You could have saved quite a bit of money with them. Good Luck

When I must access my iCloud storage to use my music without wi-fi, will my cellular company charge this against my data allowance?

You don't have to if you download or sync the music you want to play to your device while your are connected to wifi so it is availale on your device when you aren't connected to wifi. It will use your data plan if you access it over the cellular data network rather than wifi. You can disable this by going to Settings>iTunes & App Store and turning Use Cellular Data off at the bottom.

How do I get google talk to accept my password when using imessage?

I have both a MacBook Air and Pro using iOS X - Maverick. For the longest I have not been able to use iMessage with Google Talk. I need to be on Google Talk for work and decided to set it up. I set it up, but when I shut it down and then re-open it, Google Talk will not accept my password. When I go to Google, it indicate suspicious behavior. I can't find anywhere that will allow me the option allow imessage to use google talk in my google settings. Please help.
