When using Lion programs quit unexpectedly.

I downloaded Pages, installed it and can't use it at all. The same thing happens with skype and iPhoto. Any ideas of what can be done?

The first thing to determine is whether your problem resides in your home directory or is global. Create a new user account, log into it, and try running your programs. If you can we'll need to figure out what in your account is causing the trouble. If you can't then the problem is global and the solution will be different.

  • On New iMac 10.8, CS4 Program quit unexpectedly when trying to print

I can't print since I have reinstall CS4 on my new iMac with english system 10.8. Program quit unexpectedly when I want to print. Is there a solution?

You might have been able to just reapply the OS 10.4.10 COMBO update for PPC or the OS 10.4.10 COMBO update for Intel without having to have gone through the motions of an archive and reinstall, with subsequent combo update.

  • Constant "Program quit unexpectedly" after recent update.

After my most recent system update was performed I have run into several instances of programs quitting unexpectedly. Ranging from Google Notifier (When you have new mail in gmail), Reporting system errors, trying to download .dmg files, and trying to run the software updater again, they all "end unexpectedly" and when I try to report the error, the program wont respond.
Any ideas as towards a solution?
    Thanks!

I first want to thank your for taking the time to go through this with tech support. It saved me and anyone else with same problem a great deal of frustration. I have to admit, I'm surprised the solution is to reinstall Leopard. I've been using a mac for over 15 years and I've never had to reinstall the OS. I'll do it, but if anyone can supply any information as to why this problem occured in the first place, I'd appreciate it.

  • All programs quit unexpectedly. Please HELP!

My iBook is nearly 3 years old now, but I've been having this problem since 2 months after my purchase date and it has slowly gotten worse over the years. It didn't really bother me until this last year when my work load increased and the crashing became more and more frequent (because I am working more?).
All programs quit unexpectedly--MS Word, Safari, Explorer, Firefox, AIM, iPhoto, Adobe Reader, etc--a lot! It doesn't seem to matter if I have 1 thing running or 5 or 10. For example, I will have one fairly sizeable word doc open and be cutting and pasting a small (10 words) amount of text and it will quit. Or I will go to save it (which I am now obsessed with doing every 5 minutes) and it will quit.
I have taken my computer in about 5 times in the last 9 months to have this issue resolved, but to no avail. They say, "Seems like a software problem" and come up with nothing. They've run the hardware tests and find nothing. They've checked for viruses, corrupted files, etc and always find nothing. They can't replicate the problem even though it happens to me at least twice in an 8 hour day. They've erinstalled OSX and that didn't help either. I feel like I am going crazy--especially in light of the amount of Word data I have lost in the last year.
Among other issues I've had--the motherboard (it was "fried" meaning the computer wouldn't even turn on) was replaced last March and the hard drive (it would make a weird grinding noise and then the programs would close) was replaced in November. I was hoping these replacements would solve my problems, but they clearly haven't.
Are there Lemon Laws for computers? What can I do?! I don't have the money for a new computer
    Other potentially useful info:
I had them upgrade the RAM to 512 when I bought it
I have a 30GB of which about 8GB are free
They tell me the RAM tests fine
My warranty runs out at the end of February :/
I am so sick of visiting the Mac "Geniuses" that I now go out of my way to an authorized dealer instead because they don't treat me like I am totally insane. PLEASE HELP!
    iBook G4

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your iBook.
I would inspect the RAM chips in your computer. You could have gotten a foul RAM chip or installed the wrong type of RAM (even though it may fit in the slot, it may not be the one specified for your model of iBook).
I would also try reinstalling OS X again, completely wiping the drive clean before you do so.
If that doesn't work, you could try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM (look in the knowledge base for documents on how to do this; it is an easy search).
If you are still having trouble, get on the phone with Apple and try to arrange a hardware repair and/or replacement.
The best of luck to you and your problem. I hope that your issue is resolved in the near future.

  • Mac programs "quit unexpectedly"

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Air I can no longer log into Safari, Mail, Apple Store, Notes, or update anything anymore.I always get whatever program "quit unexpectedly."  It only seems to effect Mac programs.  I have to use FireFox to get on line now (no issues).
    Any thoughts?  I'm currently running OS X 10.9 on a 2GHz i7 with 8 GB ram.

Hello, not your fault, but when you use Paste instead of Paste & Match style, this forum makes it really hard to read the log.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Audio skipping and programs quitting unexpectedly, please help

Hi all, I have a Power PC G5 running on OSX 10.3.9. I came into my room this morning to my fan running at an absurd speed and the computer was frozen. I restarted the computer, but the rest of the day, my audio has been skipping constantly (on itunes and also when played through Firefox) regardless of how many programs I have open. I have never had any issues with this before. I'm also having problems with programs freezing today and with programs quitting unexpectedly.
What caused my fan to go nuts? The tower is sitting in a pretty dusty area, so it is possible that there is dust around the tower. I have no experience opening or cleaning a computer, so if that is what I should do, could you please instruct me on the best way to do that.
I have about 40gb free with 110gb utilized on my Macintosh HD. The activity monitor shows that I only have 130mb Free of system memory (when I'm only running itunes, activity monitor, and firefox). The activity monitor also jumps from having abou 85% of the CPU idle when it is working fine down to below %40 percent when the audio is skipping. What is causing these jumps?
    Thank you for your help.
    Max

    Let's start with the basics.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

  • Can I use a SD Card rather than a USB stick when using Lion Recovery Disk Assistant

I'm using a MB Pro 2010, can I use a SD Card in the SD Card slot rather than a USB stick when using Lion Recovery Disk Assistant.  I would like to use the 16GB chip with a single 1GB partition so I can dump a bunch of other backup stuff into the same chipper.

Yes, you could certainly do that, provided you have a card reader or an SD card slot available on both Macs and what you are copying is smaller than the capacity of your SD card.
But that's an awfully slow way to transfer GB's of files.  32GB SD cards cost anywhere from about $20 to $90 and of course the cheaper cards will be the slowest cards.  Also need to consider that your iPhoto, iTunes and especially iMovie libraries may be larger than your SD card's capacity, and there is no easy way to 'split' them to save partial libraries and reassemble them on your new Mac.
A better solution is an external hard drive connected via FW or USB2.  Much faster and without the capacity limit of an SD card.  For example, you could get a 500GB OWC Mercury Elite Pro mini drive (5400 rpm) for $115 and after you are done using it for file transfer it would be a nice backup drive.  Or build your own with an OWC mini case and a 500GB WD Scorpio 7200 rpm drive for about $120.   Both support eSATA, FW400/800 and USB2.
Or you could just network the two Macs together and use the Finder to transfer files that way.  Cheap, fast, and it works.

    What do you mean 'moving'?
If you mean, can you change desktop in the main display but not the second display, I'm afraid the answer is no. They are logically tied to the same desktop space.

  • Why are my programs quiting unexpectedly and repeatedly when I try to open them?

After updating my Java for Mac OS X 10.6 version 7, Safari, Macbook EFI Firmware, Apple Software Installer, and iTunes this morning, my iTunes, iPhoto, Word, Adobe, etc. are not opening for me. I get an error stating that the program has quit unexpectedly each time I attempt to open one of these programs. Any thoughts as to what is going on and how I can fix it? I would really appreciate some help!

''' "Why does Mozilla use files that I can't open?" '''
The bookmarks backup JSON files '''''are''''' human readable in a text program like Notepad or Wordpad. But those JSON files don't have any separate lines of numbers and text they're one long line. Those files are made to do their job in Firefox, not to be looked at by users.
What type of problem do you have that prompted you to attempt to read a file like that?

  • I am running OS X10.4.11 Recently I have been having trouble opening entourage, word, safari, excel, etc on a cold start  It has been taking 3 attempts  each time getting a message that the program quit unexpectedly.  Seems like a virus.  What can I do?

1st attempt to open an application after the computer has been shut down a message says(as an example)" the application PowerPoint quit unexpectedly.  Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.  Click reopen to see more details or send a report to Apple."  Next attempt it says "The application PowerPoint quit unexpectedly after it was reopened.  Mac Os X and other applications are not affected.  Click Try Again to temporarily restore the application's default settings and open it again.  Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."  When I click "Try Again"  the app opens normally and usually runs ok  sometimes it will quit unexpectedly but when reopening at that point it opens ok.  Never had this issue until about 2 weeks ago.  ***  When I close the program myself I get a message that says "PowerPoint-New Settings
New settings have been created for this application.  Do you want to use these settings from now on?  Then there  are  2 buttons below the dialogue box that say "Use new settings and Use original settings"  This happens every time I try to open Power Point, Excel, Safari, Entourage the first time each new day.  If I have been running any of those programs and have not shut down the laptop then the program will reopen normally but may shut down unexpectedly on its own  and sometimes not. What changed and how do I fix this problem?  Running OS X10.4.11 and software updates are current.  Ran diagnostics and checked out ok.

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.

  • Why does a program quit unexpectedly?

I haven't had any problems with programs closing unexpectedly on my week 32 MacBook yet, but just now my Mozilla Firefox quit unexpectedly. What makes it do that?
Also, I hate asking this, but is it a sign of worse things to come? I just had a speaker problem today (suddenly going mute) and these two problems I also had on my week 22 MacBook that was a total lemon and resulted in me getting this one as a replacement.
I'm nervous. I'm in school and I can't even imagine having to go through the MacBook repair process again.
    Advice?

There are a multitude of reasons why an application might quit unexpectedly. It could be the app, the OS, hardware, other software, anything. It's wholly impossible (without seeing a crash log) to answer this.
The way I see a potential repair while you're in school is that you have two choices:
    1) (Try to) Use the machine that doesn't work well, if at all, and complain the entire time, run the risk of losing data or, in fact, the machine entirely - leaving you up that one creek that rhymes with "hit".
    or
    2) If/when a repair is needed, just suck it up and send it in and go to a computer lab for a week or so, use a roommate or friend's machine.
Either way, you're going to be without it for a spell.

  • Programs quit unexpectedly every time I try to open.

I have the Adobe Creative Suite production premium CS6 and everything was working fine yesterday. Today I was cleaning out all the stupid fonts I dont use in Font Book and then I deleted a LOT of them. Now most of the programs will not open (Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge, After Effects)... It starts to load up and then says it quit unexpectedly.. Can anyone help me?

    Rempleseed,
Is it an option to go back to an earlier time/state of the computer, obviously, after securing any files that may disappear (if you have them on your main harddisk)?

  • Programs quiting unexpectedly

    Hi guys,
I've been experiencing program shutdowns unexpectedly after the update. For one, I'm not sure if the update was the culprit or things just happened. Before the update my MBP can be left on (no reboot) for 7 days without any of such incidents, ok maybe 1 or 2 but recently, programs have been quitting unexpectedly and they consist of both universal binaries and rosetta apps. My laptop has not rebooted for 4 days and issues like this are starting to pop out. Finder is abit laggy, I had to close all apps and restart them before everything is back to normal. Dock hangs in the sense that when mouseover nothing is being animated because I have the manification feature turned on. Dashboard loads very slow.
Do I need a reboot? Because I have this impression that OS X can be on 24/7 without any rebooting because of its background cron jobs in the middle of the night.

I'd suggest you run Disc Utility and 'Repair Permissions' on the drive.
