When using my external hard drive, the files I put on it still show up on my computer as backups and continue to take up space on my macbook pro. How do i fix this?

I transfer files from my macbook pro to the WD my book for mac and then delete the file off of my computer, but then it just shows up on my macbook pros hard drive in the "backups" category and continues to take up space on my computers hard drive.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X Lion and Mountain Lion create local snapshots if you have Time Machine enabled > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
As local snapshots are backups in the internal drive, it's normal that the files you transferred are part of them. You can delete the local snapshots by turning off Time Machine in System Preferences > Time Machine, but you don't need to do that. Time Machine will delete them automatically when your hard drive is full

  • When using as External Hard Drive: can I install programs?

Is it possible to install a program to the iPod when it's being used an external hard drive? I just thought of this, because I was wondering if it would help me conserve disk space. So long as I kept it connected to the computer, would the program still work?

Possibly, but will reduce space usable for media playable by iPod. If it will be for use as external hard drive exclusively there shouldn't be an issue. You could get higher capacity discs in external enclosures for about the same size though.

  • I have backed up my disk using Time Machine.  Now I want to delete the backed-up files from my hard drive.  But when I do and reconnect the external hard drive, the files are also deleted on that.  What do I do?

I have backed up my disk using Time Machine.  I then deleted the back-up files from my MacBook hard drive.
I then reconnected my external hard drive and find the files I deleted from my hard drive are also deleted from
my external hard drive.  Can someone tell my what what happened?  I'm confused.

    Hello,
Time Machine is not a good way to do that, when it eventually needs more room it deletes old Backups to make room.
If you really want to keep Files but remove them from the Internal Drive, then I'd get another external drive to copy or clone them to that is not used for TM.

  • Speeding up Time Capsule when used as external hard drive

I use a Time Capsule as an external "server" that two macs use, both connected via ethernet. We have a second Time Capsule (connected wirelessly) that is used for Time Machine back-ups.
Recently (since upgrading to Mavericks — coincidence?) accessing the files has been getting slow — click on a folder and I have to wait up to a minute (I timed it) to see its contents. This is on iMac (27-inch Mid 2010) running OS X Mavericks (10.9.2). Our newer Mac does display the contents of folders a little quicker, so perhaps it is the Mac, not Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule has 180gb free — could it be too full?
Is there any way of speeding the access to the files up on this Mac, or should I "downgrade" the Mac to Mountain Lion / Lion.
(on a side note OS Mail is desperatly sluggish since upgrading to Mavericks, so perhaps I will have to downgrade...)

You are showing the TC as Gen1 in your profile. Are both TC gen1?
The disk performance of Gen1 is not particularly good. Especially copying a lot of small files.
And the TC was never designed to do what you are using it for.. the spin down for instance is very rapid. On a normal NAS you can control spin down to a more satisfactory balance between speed and power saving.
Sometimes the OS is just slow.
Manually mount the TC drive in the OS.
So in Finder go, connect to server.
    Type in the address,
    AFP://TCname.local
or if the TC maintains a constant IP.
    AFP://TCIPaddress
(Where TCname is the network name of the TC.. or TCIPaddress is its standard IP address. )
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local in the wireless and ethernet setup of the Mac. But make sure wireless is turned off if you use ethernet. Just having wireless turned on has caused slow transfer in my testing.
I suggest you then do a test copying a single large file (1GB aprox) to the TC.. discount the spin up time.. as drives get old and sticky they take longer and longer to spin up. And see what kind of real transfer speeds you get.. use activity monitor. I would hope you get at least 30-40MByte/s. Less than that something is behaving poorly.. try copying the same file to your other computer. Make sure the ethernet connection is showing gigabit to both.
Mavericks seems to have made a few backward steps and sticking to Lion/Mountain Lion a bit longer may be worthwhile.

    Re Time Machine
I have an external  hard drive with files I backed up manually over the past 2 years 1TB of memory.
I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?
can I split it the drive in two partitions?
    Also
as I have two separate Macbook Pro's- one older than the other.
    OSX 10.68
    the other is
    OSX 10.75
can I back them up separately?
or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?

You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

  • I used an external hard drive for my backups via Time Capsule.  I bought a new computer and I want to transfer all my old fonts over to the new one but when I go into the Font Library from the hard drive backup but my downloaded fonts aren't there?

I used an external hard drive to back up my computer using Time Capsule before I bought a new one.  I am slowly transferring information fromt he backup to my new computer and I want to transfer over my old font book.  When I go into the Font folder on the hard drive the only fonts that show up are the ones that came stock with the computer not any of the ones I have downloaded over time.  Could they be downloaded somewhere else?

The answer to that would probably be "Yes." If you don't remember where your fonts were stored, you may want to search your backups for any of the font files you know the names to. See where that takes you.
Ideally, Font Book and other font managers will temporarily store the fonts you "installed" into the System when you run the OS. When you shut down, etc. they are removed and reloaded on restart. The permanent place fonts reside is where you saved them when or after you downloaded them. I typically create a Resources folder on the root level of the computer and place a Fonts folder there. Then I install fonts from there, and they are available to all users on that iMac.
Perhaps if you did not have that kind of a strategy, perhaps many of them are still in your Downloads folder?

  • I was trying to back up my mac by using my external hard drive.  Without realizing it, time machine erased all my backups from my other computers.  Is there any way to recover these files?  I can't even get the external hard  drive to work on my pc.

I was trying to use my external hard drive to back up my mac computer.  It had files on it from my pc computer.  Time machine erased all my existing files. (I thought it was only going to erase the duplicate files and rewrite them).  Is there anyway to recover these files from my external hard drive.  My mac has renamed the hard drive time maching and it will no longer show up on my pc.  What can I do?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Yes, you have WD software installed  REMOVE IT !!
WD has warned its customers about their huge mistake that their software doesnt work on Mavericks and causes data loss.
(also dont use WD drives anymore)

I found information on how to transfer my itunes library to a new computer. I am going to use an external hard drive for this to transfer my itunes folder to the new computer.
I will then download and install a new version of itunes on my new computer.
My question is this. When I do this, will itunes have all my album artwork for all my library? My library has a lot of my own music and I have spent quite a bit of time copying album artwork that itunes did not add. I am really hoping I don't have to do this again!

  • When I installed iTunes 11 on a windows 8 system I get the music, but the screen dosn't have te library on the left.  The left side of iTunes is the name.  I got the songs by using a external hard drive.  What have I done wrong?

When I installed iTunes 11 on a Windows 8 system the installation did not seem to work correctly.  There is no sidebar and no ribbon w/ File, Edit, etc.  I tried to use an external hard drive to move from an older computer using XP to the new one w/ Wdw 8.  I thought if I deleted iTunes from the Wdw 8, I could reload it. Apparently I did not delete the music files because they appeared in the format I complained about, no side bar or ribbon.  Can anyone walk me through the process of deleting everything and reinstalling?  I am not very computer savy so a step by step would really be appreciated.
    Thank you,

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

Many users keep their iTunes libraries on external drives. You just have to remember to connect and power up the drive before launching iTunes.

if it's fat32 then the mac can read it without problems
if it's ntfs then you can install programs which make it possible to write to it too otherwise it's read only
