When using refine radius tool my selection remains light in color

I am trying to replace a back ground on a photo and am trying to select hair, leaves in trees etc. by using the refine radius tool. After brushing over the area, the selection, remains greyed out (very light) in color as though I have an opacity setting some where for this selection. Any ideas

Hi 99jon I have been watching some tutorials where they open the refine edge mini window, select (W) white background then activate the Refine Radius Tool (E) then brush those areas which weren't selected completely i.e. hair or leaves on trees. The brush (E) is meant to bring those items hair, leaves into the main selection. When I do this the portion that I brush over remains very light in color, as though I have an opacity setting on say 50%. The tutorials dont use the red mask at all, allthough I have tried this. The brush, for some reason doesn't ADD to the main selection

• When extracting hair, the Refine Radius Tool is grayed out in Photoshop cc

Maybe they've changed the process for the Refine Radius Tool but my version of cc does not allow me to further refine the extraction.

Hi Ron. Yes you can adjust the brush size with the square brackets. I use the express wheel on my Intuos 4. But more importantly, I don't think there is any reason why Refine Radius would be greyed out from a usser error point of view. You could try resetting your preferences by restarting Photoshop while holding down the Shift Alt Ctrl (Shift Opt Cmd) keys. But it could also be a video driver problem. Go to the card makers site and make sure you have the very latest driver for it.
Do you have a tablet? I sometimes have a sticky brush problem with mine, and have to tap the stylus on the tablet to free it up. That could cause problems with brush size, but I doubt it would cause the Refine edge button to be grey out.
What OS btw? Is it Windows 8? There seem to be a few people with video driver problems with Windows 8 and CC

• Using Refine edge with Quick Selection......

I think I'm doing something wrong, because I can do a quick selection, but when I hit the "Refine Edge" button and make a change to the selection, my change doesn't "take"...
I have an image, one layer (background), absolutely normal, boring image (for example, a white swan sitting in the blue water). I go in with Quick Select and select PART OF
the swan. I have areas that aren't selected, and areas that are selected and shouldn't be. So, I need to refine my selection. I subtract and add bits of selection with the
Quick Select tool, but leave a big piece of the swan's body NOT selected, and a bit of water SELECTED. So, I need to go in with a tool and refine the edge of my selection...
SO, I hit "Refine Edge" from the tool bar and select "Overlay" for my view mode. I can now see what's selected, and know what I'd like to change. And, I have a red overlay
so I have a visual guide to changing things....
Go to the "Refine Radius Tool" and paint over an area I want ADDED to my selection (a piece of swan immediately adjacent to my original selection)... It runs red, like I'd expect.
I release the mouse and a second later, the red goes away, but the selection has NOT been changed. I've tried this directly from the Quick Select tool. I've double-clicked the
background layer and changed it so it's not background any more - made no difference. I've created a layer mask on the no-longer background layer (the mask contains my
Quick Selection just fine). I've then used the Mask panel to specify "Mask Edge" and again tried the "Refine Radius Tool" to add an area to my selection. Again, it turns red
while selecting, then stops being red when I let go, and the area I selected is NOT added to the selection...
I watched a presentation by a Photoshop person who DEMONSTRATED exactly what I'm doing, and it worked. I looked at Martin Evening's CS5 book, and as near as I can tell,
I did exactly what he described... He got a selection, added to the selection, and it worked fine...
I figure I've got something configured wrong, or something else goofed up. What am I missing here?

It's not my intention (intent?) to beat up on the "Refine Edge". I figured when I couldn't get the same pristine results as all the demos that I was doing something wrong, and kept watching more people doing this 'cause I figured I was doing something dumb...
Mostly, I've been trying this on different images over the last couple weeks just to see if I could figure out how to get it to work.
From the responses in here I suspect I'm doing it correctly, but the images I'm trying it on just don't lend themselves to perfect edges without some additional work..... The Quick Select and a bit of edge cleanup is still faster than the "good old days", so its definitely a step forward.
As far as the swans, yes, no matter what I did, I was getting a lot of extraneous selections and wonky edges and stuff. One of these days I'll try pulling an eagle or a great egret out of a clear sky and see how that goes. I suspect it'll work a lot better...
I only fiddled with the rodeo image 'cause I figured it was "like" hair. But my background is pretty busy. With a little additional work I DID get a very, very good selection, and was able to soften the background, and do a gradient so the ground under the horse is sharp, gradually blurring as it moves to the grandstands...
Thanks for all the replies...

• Refine Radius Tool Not Working (Circle with slash symbol)

When I make a selection and move to refine edge options to use the refine radius tool it simply does not allow it and gives me this circle with slash symbol.
I tried resetting the tool and reinstalling photoshop. The tool worked a few months ago but it just doesnt now. Any ideas?

You need to uncheck Show original.

• Photoshop CS5 Refine Radius tool not working

Hi, I'm following along the Classroom in a Book CS5 Photoshop book and when I try to use the Refine Radius tool in the Refine Mask dialog box and try to paint with it to refine the edges of the black hair model, the paint strokes do not hold. The painting works but then the action is basically undone. Followed all the instructions to a T, but saw the same problem when I tried it on another photography yesterday too.
Any tips as what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks but no. It's not the spacebar. The handtool works fine in Illustrator

• Refine Radius Tool Results Offset

When I attempt to use the refine radius tool on a current project, it's correctly getting a good mask result, except it's offsetting the results by about 20-30 pixels below where it should. The project is very large, retouching an image over 8,000 pixels on the long edge, working in 16-bit ProRGB with an Intuous 3 tablet on Photoshop CC/Mac. The tool is working correctly on other images. With this file I have been floating between the system described before and a Windows-based Photoshop CS6. Maybe the file is corrupted somehow but I've tried resaving as a new file name and reducing the size of the image with no fix.
Any thoughts what might be happening?
Before Before w/MaskAfter w/Mask

Glad you got it working with the TIF. It may be moot, but I would suspect there is something corrupted with that particular file, possibly a small error related to image size or channel origin. Once a file is corrupted, this would explain why the problem is happening on other systems, and also why it only happens with this file.
I've never seen this particular error before, so don't worry about it too much. Sometimes stuff just happens. :+)
You might want to run Disk Utility on the originating system, and see if your hard drive needs repair. I also highly recommend Disk Warrior and Onyx (in that order) once a month.

• Adobe Photoshop CS4/5 Crashes when using the Move Tool

Hello. I'm here because I'm having an issue with Photoshop.
I was trying out CS5 when it started to crash every time I tried to use the Move Tool. It was the generic error message: "Adobe Photoshop CS4 has stopped working.
A problem has caused Adobe Photoshop CS4 to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Thinking that it was a CS5 issue, I went back to my copy of CS4, only to find the same thing happening there (I also downgraded because CS5 was also crashing at other random times for some reason, but that's an issue for another time).
This puzzles me because both were working fine before. Granted, I hadn't opened them for a while, but it was a sudden thing.
My first impulse was to uninstall and reinstall CS4. No luck. So then, I uninstalled all third-party plugins, thinking that might be it. Still, the same problem. I started looking around on Google for solutions and found the instructions on resetting the Tool preferences (I chose to reset the preferences for ALL of the tools). When that didn't work, I tried deleting the preferences file outright, which said instructions recommended. Nothing.
I should note that Photoshop crashes when using the Move Tool to move an object without ant lines around it, i.e., a layer. I'll move the object, and after two to three seconds, the mentioned error message will appear and Windows will close Photoshop. This, however, only seems to happen after selecting, copying, and pasting part of a large object with some variation of the Marqee Tool (thus making that part a new layer by default) while working at a zoom of 100%. So, in short, working with a large image like This at 100% zoom. The image linked is the image that I was using and am currently using to reproduce the problem. It is 1280x1024 pixels. I have tested this with somewhat smaller, yet comparable images too. Same problem. I have never had this problem working with large images before, and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions short of formatting my hard drive.

Even a decent RAM upgrade is usually only a few hundred dollars nowadays, but it's not a trivially simple process. That said, with a little research and care you can do it. Alternatively, you can hire people (e.g., "Geek Squad") to do such an upgrade.
First, you'll need to know what your operating system capacity is. For example, a 32 bit Windows system can really only use up to a bit more than 3 GB of RAM, while a 64 bit Windows system can use all the RAM you can find a place to plug in. What version of Windows are you running?
Then you'll need to determine what RAM you have installed and what your computer's maximum RAM capacity is - usually you can do this through internet research, either by visiting your computer manufacturer's web site or doing google searches. There are even RAM manufacturer web sites that will tell you what kind of RAM your computer needs and suggest sources, for example:
http://www.kingston.com/
It may be that you can just plug additional chips into currently empty sockets, or it is possible you'll need to replace the RAM chips you have installed in your computer to make room for an upgrade. Every computer is different.
If you list your computer model and current RAM that you have installed here, it may be that someone can help with more specific advice.

Can you merge two user accounts on a macbook? my wife has created a new user on her new macbook air then, inadvertently, created a second one when using the migration tool. 1st a/c has her office 365 install, while 2nd has her itunes database, docs and contacts. What is the best way forward to get everything into the one account? Not sure if the office 365 will allow another installation into the second account, otherwise would just do that and delete the first, if that is possible?

There is no merge but you can move data from one account to another via the Shared folder. Data is copied from Shared. Watch your free space when copying. These are large files. Do one at a time if you are on a small drive. After making copy, delete from other users before you start next copy.
Office365 installs in the main Applications folder and is available for all users on the computer. Activation is tied to the drive not the User.

7. If you are using more than one video adapter, remove the additional cards.
Multiple video adapters can cause problems when OpenGL and Photoshop use the GPU. It's best to connect two (or more) monitors into one video adapter. If you have to use more than one video adapter, make sure that they are the same make and model. Also make sure that they both support the same versions of OpenGL and Shader Model. Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
Note: Using two video adapters does not enhance Photoshop's performance.

• Why does Photoshop CC running slow when using Mixer brush tool

Why does Photoshop CC and Photoshop C6 running SOOO slowly when using Mixer brush tool??
Only to create one stroke it takes several seconds.
I have to wait a long time to do next stroke. I can't work with this. How do I fix this??
I have a new computer, a Mac Book Pro with 16 GB ram, so I have plenty of ram.

You really have to keep your brush size small with the Mixer Brush tool. And that necessitates keeping your canvas failry small as well.
Back a few years ago I did a whole painting with the Mixer Brush once and some of the bristle brushes - just to see if I could - and I found I had to really limit the brush size (e.g., to 50 to 75) in order to get enough responsiveness to keep painting. In that case my canvas was 4096 x 5120. It's not impossible to get a good, professional result, but you have to be careful about sizing things right.
