When your PC won't recognize your Ipod -- solution!

How to Fix an Ipod that's not being recognized by Windows
When the "5 R's" don't do it, try this:
(Optional step beforehand: Try to reformat the Ipod -- this is sometimes possible if you connect it to a different computer. Format it as "FAT32" and NOT "quick format.")
Now, the main trick: Connect your Ipod to your main computer. Open the Device Manager, and, under USB devices, right-click "USB Mass Storage Device." Uninstall it. Once it's gone, disconnect the Ipod, wait a beat, and then reconnect it. Windows will recognize "new hardware," and re-install the correct drivers for your Ipod.
Open iTunes. You'll be prompted to name your "new" Ipod, and off you go.

I am having the same problem and this solution did not work. I had a broken Nano that I got replaced with a new one. I plugged the new one in the computer and the ipod is recognised but it says it can't install the hardware as the data is invalid.
I went to see if I could uninstall the USB Mass Storage but it's not there. I've updated to the latest itunes and quicktime from the website and am not sure what else to do. Does anyone have any other suggestions please?

  • Possible Fix For When Windows XP Won't Recognize Your iPod

The fix detailed in this article worked for me when I couldn't get iTunes 7 to recognize my iPod in Windows XP. Sometimes when I force quit the iPodService.exe service, it worked the first time, but when I reconnected the iPod, it didn't appear in iTunes.
    Here's the article:

    My issue was even more difficult;
I got a new 20 gb ipod photo, hooked it up to my computer, and ran updates. Afterward, it told me to unplug and reconnect my ipod. I did so, but it still just gave me the reeconnect logo on my ipod and did nothing else.
I tried changing the cable, nothing happened. I switched to my work laptop (windows XP pro, also), nothing happened. I tried my roommate's macbook, still nothing. I tried rebooting the ipod. It would still only show the reconnect icon.
No computer would recognize it and the ipod was also unrepsonsive, so I had no way to reset my ipod or anything.
I had realized that it never showed that it was actually hooked up to a power supply when it was plugged into anything, and I think this is because it was plugging into USB ports and not being recognized by me computer.
So, I took it out to my car, and plugged it into my cigarette lighter adapter.
Bingo, that did the trick, now it works with everything again.

  • Please Help - My iTunes library won't recognize my iPod classic

My iTunes library won't recognize my iPod classic 80gb. I try doing the trouble shooting steps on apple, but they still did not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to add some newer music to my old iPod for listening in the car or when travelling. Thanks a lot.

    Hello dmbnewfie,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPod classic is not being recognized in iTunes when you connect it to your computer. I know you have tried some troubleshooting on the Apple website as well, but without knowing which steps you have completed, I would suggest working through the attached iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant.

  • New Computer Won't Recognize my IPOD

I have an IPOD mini and just got a new computer. When I plug it in, the computer says "usb device not recognized". When I look it up it says that there is no driver for the device. It still works fine on my old machine (a slower usb 1.1).

You may want to try these steps, Jacob, after you've installed and run the iPod Updater and your computer still won't recognize the iPod:
First, make hidden folders visible. Open My Computer and choose Tools/Folder Options/View tab. Click on 'Show hidden files and folders' and click OK.
In the Add New Hardware Wizard, have it search in C:\windows\inf for usbstor.inf. This file is required for windows to properly configure the driver. If Windows finds the driver there, you're done.
If Windows does not find the proper driver there, copy usbstor.sys from C:\windows\servicepack\i386 to C:\windows\system32\drivers.
If you can't find the usbstor.inf file on your system, you can get it here: usbstor.inf
After copying the usbstor.inf driver file to C:\Windows\inf, right-click on My Computer and choose ‘Manage.'
Click on the button labeled 'Device Manager.'
Click to open the list under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers.'
Right click on any mass storage devices with the exclamation icon next to them and select 'Update Driver.'
Check the option 'Install from a list or a specific location' and then click to continue.
Check next to 'Include this location in the search' and enter 'C:\windows\inf'.
Click on 'Next' and follow the steps to complete the driver installation wizard.

  • TS1425 itunes won't recognize my ipod

I worked with apple support to reload itunes. Now my computer won't recognize my ipod classic, at all.

Do you have any other USB devices connected to that Mac Mini? If so, properly disconnect them and reboot your PC and then reconnect your Shuffle with iTunes running.
If still no luck, try a reset of the Shuffle with it still connected to your Mac.

My computer won't recognize my iPOD Touch even though it does recognize my Clasic and Nano. Any suggestions?

Well, now I feel like an idiot. I was using TWO CORDS. Ya, don't make my mistake. The one I had a problem with was made by a company that was not apple, and it was for CHARGING. I bought it with charger, and that's all it can do. It doesn't send data like the real cable. So, check your usb cables. :S
