I have Firefox for U3 and lately it keeps trying to instal an update, which fails and a 2nd window tells me another copy of F'fox is running (which isn't) and when I close the window F'fox starts anyway, but all this takes a lot of time.

I have Firefox for U3 on my Verbatim stick to run on whatever computer I happen to be using. Lately every time I try to open F'fox a window comes up saying "Firefox is installing your updates and will start in a few moments." The status bar indicates the update is progressing, 'though a bit slowly, then suddenly it's done and the window disappears, only to be followed by another window coming up which says "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on you computer and then re-start Firefox to try again."
If I press the 'OK' button OR press the Close button, the window disappears, but then F'fox starts up all by itself anyway.
How can I stop this updating problem happening every time and on every computer I use.

Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.
Try to toggle some Boolean gfx.font_rendering prefs on the about:config page to disable some features.
Filter: gfx
Some to try:
* set gfx.direct2d.disabled to true to disable Direct2D
* set gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.use_gdi_table_loading to false.
To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. 
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page. 
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

He came to me yesterday and I noticed that his iPhone 4 still had old software (version in the 4's), so I advised him that he needed to synch it up to get the iOS 5.1.1 version. He synched and now can't get back in. He was entering his passcode on the lock screen (which wasn't taking) and I noted to him that his screen didn't look like mine. Anyone know how to fix this issue, or does he have to do a full restore?

He has set up a complex password instead of a simple passcode for his phone. If he doesn't know what it is, he'll have to restore. There is no way around a forgotten passcode.

Stopwatch continues to Run in the background

Took awhile for this to develop, but the stopwatch resets itself to zero now after just a half hour of running. That's what alerted me to the underlying problem. I've left the stopwatch running for several days in the past. I don't know if that's the trigger for this bug or not.
Basically when i start the stopwatch it runs now for 30 mins, maybe an hour or two, but when I go back in to view it, flashes a VERY long number like "233:13:45" and then flashes to zero. While it should be showing a few hours of work, it shows this extremely long number and then zero's out.
The second time it happened I had the idea of hitting "Lap" instead of "Start" to restart it. In the lap area I saw an extremely long number. Its clear the stopwatch system is continuing to run in the background, possibly from a previous date where I left it running, months ago. It seems to be doing this in the background, as the front end always ultimately goes to zero, even when it should still be running for that particular day. Clear as mud?
Definitely a bug, and Im not sure how you'd duplicate it, but here would be my suggestion:
1) Start the stopwatch and let it run for like 5 to 10 days without stopping.
2) Navigate around the phone and use its other features in the meantime.
3) Stop the stopwatch and reset it to zero, and restart it.
4) Do the same thing. Run it for 5 days maybe.
5) Stop it and reset it to zero.
Eventually it may start zeroing out when it is supposed to be counting upwards. It may also flash a long number, prior to zeroing out. You may also be able to hit "LAP" when it incorrectly zero's out and you may then see the very long number. If so, you've duplicated the bug.

i have the same problem... i have yet to find a way to duplicate the problem at will, but it manifests itself on a fairly frequent basis.
a have been running laps at around 5-6 hours or so. the problem could occur on the 1st lap or on the 6th lap. all of the a sudden the display goes to all 0s, and if you hit lap or stop, the last lap will be over 66000 hours... which, the last time i checked was like over 7.5 years....
while i may have been an early adopter, i have not had my iphone that long....
a stopwatch should be one of the simplest applications to get right. i find it pretty lame that this bug appears.

I understand that you are having issues with your HP 2310m monitor going blank and/or flickering. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it

7.1.1 is certainly compatible with the iPhone 4. Just try a reset first.
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

Adobe has been using confusing version names for at least five years.
There are now two versions labeled CC, version 9 and version 10 (also known as CC 2014). Version 10 is the latest, and if you attempt to open a version 10 file in Version 9 that is not fully patched you will get an error message telling you that the file cannot be opened. The latest patch for version 9 should use a cloud-based service at Adobe to convert version 10 files to IDML and allow you to open that.
I suspect you may be using an older operating system. Version 10 requires that your system runs at least OS X 10.7 or Windows 7 SP1 and if you are not it will not even be offered to you.
