Whenever I scrub through After Effects CC it freezes.

My specs and After Effect Memory Settings are below. The project I currently am working on has about 10 Comps and 50 pre comps. There are a lot of moving parts and to be honest I have not worked on any animations on this machine. Its older as you can see below. My guess is that it is a hardware issue. Not sure if older Mac Pros can run two graphics cards but I know I should have one dedicated GPU to AE. I am coming to the forums to see if there is a workaround until I have the money to buy better hardware or to see if that is even the issue? Help?
Here are my specs:
Here are my After Effect Memory Settings:

Thank you for your replies. A little more about the project:
My maximum resolution is 720p. I have expressions riddled throughout the project. Really it is just duplicated it a bunch of comps. Not sure this affects anything. I also have things animated objects moving up and down, nothing to fancy. I have minimal camera movements in various comps but thats about it.
Dave, I changed those settings and well it is unfortunate that the OS could further complicate this program.
As I have been writing this I have checked whether the settings had fixed the issue and it looks like it has! I guess the old mac doesn't like it when AE hogs up all of the CPUs. I am not entirely sure why they even give you the option. Anyway, thank you both for your replies.

  • Warp Stabilizer through After Effects Dynamic Link Locks up in CS6

    Hey Gang,
I've been using Warp Stabilizer through dynamic link in CS5.5 without issues.  However, when I go through dynamic link into AE, then apply Warp Stabilizer, AE locks up?
I can apply any other effects through this path in AE without issue, but when I try to apply WS, I get the "Analyze", but AE stops cold there.
    I've tried:
-Opening new project in PP with basic 5 second clip.  Then going through dynamic link into AE, and applying warp stabilizer first thing.  AE locks up there with the simplest flow.
-I have the latest downloads of the entire production CS6 suite.
-If I apply warp stabilizer directly in Premiere CS6 (which I did not know previously I could do), it works fine! (Just noticed Warp Stabilizer is present in PP CS6, but not in CS5.5).
-If I try to import the Premiere project from AE, AE locks up doing that?
It appears there are multiple issues here:
    1. I can't apply Warp Stabilizer in After Effects, and doing so crashes AE.
    2. I can't import a Premiere project into After Effects, and doing so crashes AE too?
I'm assuming I'm going to need to download AE again?
Thank you for any help and suggestions you may have!

    Hello Mylenium,
thank you for your input.  Naturally I would expect if my work flow in CS5.5 works great, I would not have to make any changes in CS6 to accomplish the same task.  With that said, I made it as simple as possible for CS6 AE to handle the Warp Stabilizer effect, and it crashed?  If I went directly back to CS5.5, no problems at all in AE (same source footage, but of course different projects).  When I first tried CS6 AE it appeared to work fine, even when doing Warp effects.  So when I ran into the issue I saw above, I started thinking it was possible the update I did to AE may have caused some other issue.  By the way, the projects I open in both CS5.5 vs. CS6 were independent, meaning, I did not convert a CS5.5 job to CS6, etc...   (See notes below).
    My setup is standard:
    i7 960
    16G mem
    Nvidia Quadro 4k
Footage is Canon 5D Mkii 1080p
    All drivers up to date.
-I think going back and forth between CS5.5 and CS6 may have caused some issues?  When I rebooted my system, CS6 AE seems to work fine when applying Warp Stabilizer effects again.
-What I did find more interesting and effective, was that CS6 Premiere has Warp Stabilizer right in its own effects now!  Works great in the premiere flow and plays back far better then going through the Dynamic Link with After Effects!  When playing Dynamic link effects back in Premiere, I'm sure everyone sees performance issues in the playback.  However, in at least with applying Warp Stabilizer directly in Premiere, the playback performance is much better.
    Thank you

  • File size changing when pass through after effects  (180Mb file goes in and comes out 33GB on export)

im processing a video recorded of an  interview where the lighting was not very good on the interviewee
im brightening up the light on the interviewees face
the file was a 180Mb  H.264 file on import
when i export the file its coming out at 33GB in size.... im not sure why this is
i have chosen the default setting "lossless" as the format for export
i just want the file to export the same size and quality as it was when i imported it
what options should i choose for this?    AE does not seem to tell me how big the end file will be and it takes 1 hour and half to process this 2 minute interview so it will take me an awfull long time to get to the bottom of this if i try by myself
    thanks

It doesn't "increase" the file size. You're making a brand new file.
What you put into After Effects has nothing to do with the resulting file. You can have an AE composition with no footage whatsoever and the resulting file will be much larger than 0!
After Effects works internally with completely uncompressed pixel data, so no matter what you toss into it, it produces whatever you tell it to produce. As Mylenium points out, you made an uncompressed final file.
Your original video file is VERY compressed. So, of COURSE uncompressed video is going to look massive by comparison.
Read Mylenium's link to understand a bit more and go here to learn AE: Getting started with After Effects There are lots of "gotchas" like this that'll bit your butt if you skip this basic training stuff.

  • Premiere Pro exports fail to recognize changes made to Dynamic Link through After Effects

    Hi there,
I am having an issue with Premiere Pro CC and Dynamic Links/After Effects CC.
I will be working within the PP CC timeline using footage, and then add motion graphics using Adobe Dynamic Link to AE CC. I notice an error in timing, or spelling, colouring - literally any type of error in AE CC that I want to correct. I go to AE CC and make the correction, go back to PP CC, and it shows up as changed. I go back to AE CC, purge media cache, memory, etc. and save the workfile. I go back to PP CC and export using Media Encoder. After waiting for the export to complete, I find it maintained the same error from a previous edit.
Does anyone know why this would be? Is there any way to avoid having to restart every time I make a small change to an edit?
Thank you in advance for any insight.

It has now happened to myself and my co-worker. The only way we have been able to "solve" the problem is by deleting cache/restarting both programs/restarting the entire computer. It shows up as changed within the Premiere project, as well as in the preview in Adobe Media Encoder - and then the final output does not reflect those changes.
Another suggested workaround to anyone else out there who is problem solving is exporting directly from Premiere, but none of these solutions seem to work 100% of the time, nor really address what this problem really could be stemming from.

Every time I add a light to a scene in After Effects the program freezes

What is your After Effects version number? You said you're running "CS6", so the version number should start with 11. The latest version of CS6 is 11.0.4 - do you have that? (The latest version of AE is 13.2.0.49, in case anyone was wondering).
Do you have your comp set to standard renderer or ray-traced?
    What are your computer specs?

  • After Effects Video Clip Freeze in the Timeline

I  exported 20 seconds After Effects compositions as a Quicktime Animation, and when imported into PrPro CC it just plays 60% of the pictures and will display that frame to the end. The audio plays fine but the pictures will just freeze. It's the second time I have had this problem now. Apparently the exported video play well to the end using Rich Media Player. So basically the problem lies in Premiere Pro. Last time I overcame it by using the clip to create a new sequence which I then dragged into my preferred timeline and it worked.
Any ideas why this is a problem...

I would try removing QuickTime from the equation.  It's often a problem.

  • After Effects CC installation freeze

I am attempting to install After Effects CC on a 15" Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.2. Machine is 2.7 Ghz i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
The installer hangs at 90% which from reading elsewhere seems to suggest the extraction isn't initialising. If I stop and restart the install it chenges to 'updating After Effects CC' and hangs at either 0% or 50%.
Using the adobe cleaner tool doesn't help.
Any suggestions? This is preventing me from using the app. Other apps install without issue.

I thought I had the same problem, but it resolved itself after, say, ten minutes stuck at 90%. My understanding, in my situation, is that After Effects, once installed, tries indeed to update itself, and to download yet another significant set of files.
It would be great if Adobe provided extended information about ongoing installations, and not just a generic status.

  • Dynamic LinK to After Effect makes export freeze

    Hi everyone,
I had previously posted on the Encore Forum, because the problem first appreared when trying to DL a sequence from Premiere to Encore: it took almost 6 hours for 15 mins of video, then it froze. Then I tried to export directly from Premiere, it took less (3 hours or so) but it froze nonetheless.
I found out that it froze exactly in the same spot, that is when it came to a DL from AE. It was a 30 secs composition in which I had simply stabilized a clip, no other effects were there. So, no matter what, when I try to expot the sequence, it blocks when it comes to the DL.
The problem is also that neither Encore nor Premiere showed me anything about it before exporting; both regularly started encoding, only to freeze at a certain point. In this way, I can't and I won't be able to realize when something like that will happen again. I mean: How could I know when a DL will create problem when exporting? The fact is that other DL worked fine.
Does anyone know if there is something I should check in order to have DLs work reguraly?
    Thank You

Yes Jim, you're absolutely right - every 'common rule' is arbitrary, and it's up to everybody do decide what suits better in one's particular circumstances or a certain workflow!
Regard to 'several minutes' as a guideline, it was just a free quotation of Rick's comment in my thread about dealing with 'heavy' AE comps...

  • After Effects has started crashing when I scrub through timeline.

I've been working on an animation for several weeks and now, starting yesterday, whenever I scrub through the timeline the program crashes on me and gives several error messages. It seems to have started after I added a large image layer with motion blur enabled that moves pretty quick. But even if I turn off motion blur for the whole comp the issue still occurs.
    Error messages are as follows:
After Effects error: crash occurred while invoking format plug-in “PNG”.
After Effects error: crash occurred while invoking rendering plug-in “AE_OpenGL”.
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <6356> <ASL.ResourceUtils.GetLanguageIDFromRegistry> <0> Unable to obtain the User 'Language' registry key at: Software\Adobe\After Effects\10.5\ Defaulting to 'en_US'.

Before quitting, you have one chance to save your project (don’t use the same name as the original).
I am using After Effects version 10.5.0.253.
I have tried several troubleshooting steps such as updating my display drivers, disabling OpenGL in Preferences > Previews, Moving the Extensions folder out of my install, Recreating my preferences, Purging the cache, and even just uninstalling and reinstalling After Effects all to no avail.
    Additional Details:
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit
    CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.40Ghz
    RAM: 8.00 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 with Driver ver. 320.49
Any help from the community would be greatly appreciated. I'm usually good at being able to research and resolve my own issues by this one has me stumped and my boss is on my case about the deadline.
    Thank you.

While I did have OpenGL disabled in Preferences > Previews its seems I still had Fast Previews set to Adaptive Resolution - OpenGL off. I've switched this to just Off and now seem to be back on track. I believe I didn't have an understanding of what all "turn off OpenGL" truly meant. I'll continue working and report back wether or not I have any more issues related to this.
What would have causes this issue to appear in the first place? I've been working in AE 5.5 for about 2 years now doing a multitude of different projects but this is the first time I've run up against this issue. Is my hardware just simply underpowered?

  • After Effects CC audio mapping problems

Whenever I start After Effects it seems like it takes over control of my system audio output settings.
For instance if I am listening to a song on iTunes and then start After Effects, I will only hear iTunes when AE is active from then on. Audio preview and scrubbing in After Effects works well, and all other audio works as they should but only when using After Effects. If I switch back to iTunes it goes silent. This goes for all other audio on my computer.
To get the audio back I need to go into system preferences and swich back and fourth in my settings. But if I then go into After Effects again the problems are back. It feels like After Effects hijacks my system audio setting when it is started. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
I am running After Effects CC 12.2.1.5 on OSX Mavericks.

Hey there, I'm having the exact same problem (Mavericks 10.9.1, AE 12.1).
I use an H/K AVR 165 with 5.1 as my default audio device (HDMI). Are you using HDMI as well? Because every other connection works (cinemadisplay speakers, optical), only when I have HDMI as my default the remapping occurs.
Waring: don't try to pick After Effects (12) or Premiere (7) as default in the sound-options in osx preferences (not the MIDI device, the aactual sound output in the preferences), I tried this yesterday and at first I thought it worked (I picked Premiere, I was just testing and curious) but as soon as I started Premiere, the whole system crashed and i needed several safe boots to get my Mac working again (it froze right after the login).

  • Using Adobe Media Encoder with After Effects and ExtendScript

    Hi,
I'm trying to automate the process of encoding a video using the Adobe Media Encoder. The project I'm working on includes allowing a user to upload a video and having that video then be encoded in different formats. I'm very new to After Effects and ExtendScript, but the two ways I see of doing this are:
    1) Use ExtendScript to fire the Adobe Media Encoder through After Effects, using the 'Add to Adobe Media Encoder Queue' function. I'm not sure if this is possible or not.
    2) Bypass After Effects all together and use the 'watch folder' function in Adobe Media Encoder and upload the files directly to that folder.
I'd prefer to go route 1, if that's possible, but I'm not sure it is. I was thinking that I could write a script to work with Adobe Media Encoder to encode a given video, but from what I've read, ExtendScript isn't currently supported by Adobe Media Encoder? This is true? What would be the best way to go about accomplishing this?
    Thanks.

I think you will have a much easier time just using option 2. I have to ask, why do you want the files to go through After Effects anyway? If you are just taking a file and converting it to ## different formats...the watch folder setup in AME would be super easy to setup.
All you need to do is ensure the user submitted files end up in a certain directory -- make that folder your watch folder and create a second folder within that one called 'encoded' or something along those lines. That way as long as AME is online and watch folders are active....you won't have to do a thing.

  • Decompressing video files using After effects

    Hello!!
I have a SONY Full HD camcorder that records in an AVCHD format.
So when I import my clips into my computer's hard drive, they are compressed. That meens that I have to decompress them in order to work with the best quality.
So, I use After Effects to export the AVCHD clips totaly uncompressed (I export them into none compressed Quicktime files). Then I re-import the uncompressed Quicktime clips into After Effects and start working with them, adding effects, color correction and so on. When I finish, I export them again totally uncompressed, in order to import them to Premiere for the final editting. I do that because I do not own an Adobe production suite so that to use Adobe Link for transfering files from After Effects to Premiere.
I decompress all my AVCHD clips because I won't need to apply effects to all of them, so some will go straight to Premiere without passing through After effects, since there is no need. So they must be decompressed.
I have noticed that when I decompressed an AVCHD clip, it got 578 GB from 84GB. So when I re-imported the uncompressed 578 GB clip in After Effects and added some effects and color correction, the final clip got out 392GB, although I chose the uncompressed settings and although I added effects. Normally it should be more than 578 GB.
Would you happen to know why is that?
Do you have any other suggestion of how should I decompress my camcorder clips? I have Quicktime but I cannot play AVCHD files, since it is an unsupported format for Quicktime.
    Thank you!!
    Giannis

After Effects and added some effects and color correction, the final clip got out 392GB, although I chose the uncompressed settings and although I added effects. Normally it should be more than 578 GB.
The default QT output uses the Animation CoDec, which is a visually lossless compression. No problem here and I think you are overdoing. There is nothing wrong with converting files e.g. to LZW compressed TIFFs, PNG or EXR files, all formats producing much smaller file sizes than QT files and without losing any info...
