Apple menu -> System preferences -> Users -> select your user, and select Login Items. There is where automatic launching happens. The other thing is, with Mac OS X 10.8 and later, there is a checkbox when you restart or shut down your Mac to reopen windows that were open upon shutdown. Make sure that checkbox is unchecked. You aren't running Classic. You are running some version of Mac OS X on a MacBook Pro.

When I turn on my MacBook Pro a box prompts up and it disappears right away. How can I stop this from happening?

I'm new in the Mac World. In November I bought a MacBook Pro. I love my MacBook, however, a couple of days ago when I turn on my MacBook and log in, a window or box prompts up for about one second and then dissapears. I'm afraid that may be a virus or trojan that may be running behind the screen. How do I fix this? Are there any applications that I can run to detect what is happening to my computer.

It was very hard to see what the box says because the message displays for less than one second. However, I was able to record it with my iphone and pause it until I got a shot of the message. The box says the following:
"Do you want the application “java” to accept incoming network connections?
Clicking deny may limit the application’s behavior. This setting can be changed in the Firewall pane of Security preferences."
I did make some changes. I will see if it works.

I just downloaded the latest software OS X on my mac book pro, now whenever I start my computer I have to wait for windows mac to open up. The open at login is not even checked. How can I stop this from happening?

All fixed Barry. When I went to restart my computer, the question was right there. Do you want to open Windows when opening. NOPE!!

My mac keeps closing all of the applications by itself- how do I stop this from happening?

My mac closes out of any programs I have open if I let it sit for more than a couple of minutes. This is a new development, so I am not sure if I have some kind of virus or if it is a problem with the computer. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

I have the same problem on my Macbook Pro with OSX. The computer does not shut down. When using any application like; internet, photoshop, or watching movies. For example; im watching netflix, I cant watch a show without the internet window slide to the left and take me to the desktop 5 to six times in 45 minuets. Sometimes I dont have to be watching anything. In fact, my window minimized itself at the start of this sentence. Its really annoying and I would like for some help.

Since downloading IOS 5 Itunes keeps randomly opening up and popping up on my desktop screen, not just when I turn on computer but randomly even though I sign out of itunes. How can I stop this from happning

After installing ios5, itunes randomly opens up on my desktop on my laptop computer. Not just when I start my computer but when I'm on it. itunes just opens. I've searched settings in itunes and my desktop and don't know where to go to stop this from happening. itunes will just open. I've rebooted laptop and tried signing out of itunes and it still happens. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make this stop??

While it is clearly the wifi syncing that is causing it, the device almost never shows up in the device list, and I've already unchecked that box. I have two devices that I'd love to wifi sync, but neither show up today on the device list, despite iTunes continually popping up every 5 minutes or so. Buggy...

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
It constantly gets harder.

I enter misc. items in each metadata file, ie. document title, author, description, keywords, copyright notice, etc. Each image has it's own metadata file, with unique keywords, which are unique to that image. The keywords then show up on the right side of PSE organizer under 'imported keyword tags'. Then I can select a keyword, unique to that image and wa...la... that image only appears in organizer. I have been doing this for years (like probably 10). But this is the first time I have experienced the duplication issue.
Not adding any auto-adjustments in Organizer as far as I know.
The names are not duplicated in organizer, but appear as ie. scnr0122.jpg and scnr0122-1.jpg. But the '-1' is not found on my server. Apparently they are being added from another source. Is it possible they are being pulled from a cloud server, ie. creative cloud or revel?? I do have the same files on those cloud servers, but am not intentionally duplicating the import.

I unloaded some mp3 songs into desktop file by mistake, now I get a message Item "....." is used by Mac OS X and cannont be opened. How can I fix this

I am new to this support community. I was givin a stick with a bunch of music on it, I wanted to install it on my music and have never done any installations. The 3000 some songs got into my system 3 times so I have 6000 some in my desktop file and had ( I deleted or lost it somewhere??) 9000 some in my documents file. When I click on a song I get a message... Item "Alan Jackson - My Own Kind Of Hat 2.mp3" is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened.
1. What can I do to clean these files out ?
2. What does this message indicate?
3. I did manage to trash some of the songs But had another message that sounded like I should not attempt this either.

I have exactly the same problem. I have tried Applejack and TechTools Pro to correct permissions and the files are still unaccessible.
The computer is a 2x3 GHz Dual-core Intel Xeon w/16GB Memory, running OS X 10.4.10.

My macbook is extremely hot and the fan is worryingly loud, what is wrong with it and how do i stop this from happening?

For soem reason if I actually dare to use my macbook the fan kicks in and is so loud that I am unable to use skype or other voice programs without a headset because of its volume, also it gets very hot very fast, so hot that if I rest it on my knees it burns. I normally have it on a desk and the area is well ventialted. I have no print queues and rarely have more than two programs running at a time. Can anyone offer a suggestion of what is wrong and how I can fix this please? One of the main reasons I bought one in the first place was that they are so quiet when shown them in the apple store, but this is worryingly loud...

Thanks, it seems that it doesn't like to play games, which is a bit of a bummer as i bought this specifically because it was capable of doing that. To be fair, it is capable... I just need to get used to a sound like sitting by a washing machine on spin cycle... Wish they would make people aware of this in the Apple Store, its very misleading and not at all desireable.

On our mac I am finding sometimes while on line in safari that while reading a page it will "back" to the previous page with out me doing or touching anything. Is there anyreason for this or how can I stop it from happening?

When using safari the page will "back" with out touching the keyboard meaning that I am logged out of some online programmes. Does anyoine know why this would happen or what I can do to stop it??

Yes, Safari is the Internet browser. Click on a Safari page, go to the upper, left-hand corner, click on Safari, select About Safari, and post the information. On my Snow Leopard machine, I'm running Version 5.0.5 (6533.21.1).

ICal - I want my iMac, MacBook Air, and iPad to all "talk" and share iCal entries. How can I get this to happen?

Once you configure iCloud preferences on your MBA it should automatically fetch your info from the cloud. Be sure that you set up your iCal account on the MBA.
