Whenever my iPad 2 on iOS 7.0.6 gets a notification, the screen never turns off by itself. How do I fix this?

It has been like this ever since I updated my iPad 2 to iOS 7.0.6 a few weeks ago. This really drains my battery as the screen stays on when I don't notice it and manually put the device to sleep. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Any help will be much appreciated.
