Whenever Restarted -- Kernel Panic
Hey there,
Just replaced my hard drive which was on its last limb. Got OS X installed and started going through the updates. After the first restart that was required I got a kernel panic. After I turned off the machine then back on it would boot. Now whenever I select restart, it kernel panics on the startup (gray spinning Apple screen). Shutting down then starting again seems to work every time. Also, choosing to shut down then starting up does not cause any problems.
Any ideas? Nothing else seems to be incorrect. Obviously it is easy to suggest that something with the hard drive is bad since that is what recently changed. Seems like weird behavior, consistent behavior though.
Thanks!

A couple of things suggest themselves to me:
• a problem with the installation of the HDD seems most likely.
• possible faulty HDD.
After installation did you boot from the install disk, format and erase the HDD before installation? Check out these directions and see if this is what you did:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
• Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
• Click on Options button
• Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
• Click OK
• Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
• Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
• Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
• Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
• Select Erase tab
• Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
• Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
• Click Erase button
• Quit Disk Utility.
Installation Process
• Open Installer and begin installation.
• Select installation option
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
• Proceed with installation.
• After installation computer will restart for setup.
• After setup, reboot computer.
• Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select First Aid in main panel.
• Click Repair Disk Permissions.
• Connect to Internet.
• Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC) (Tiger) or
10.3.9 Combo Update (Panther)
Computer will restart.
• Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
• Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
• Install all updates.
Computer may restart after updates.
• Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select First Aid in main panel.
• Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
Cheers

Thunderbolt Bus:Not sure which devices are the Honestech and Silabs. I googled for drivers but didn't find much. The only thing I could think they are is possibly an audio interface I no longer have and a printer that I also no longer use. Not sure why those would cause the crashes now and never before this?
Then got another crash. I did notice that the /var/log/cups/appfirewall.log was the last log before the crash and I was wondering if this could have something to do with it? Kernel Panic log below and firewall log posted below that:

OSX Mountain Lion Upgrade causes Restart, Kernel Panics
Have tried resetting PRAM, repairing permissions, and Disk Repair. This is happening after an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. A fresh install is not a possibility. of course, I have a time machine backup and can go back to snow leopard if I have to. I cannot do a clean Mountain Lion install although I am planning to do one just to see if this is a hardware issue and not a software issue, and then revert back with time machine. I'm not having any luck discerning what caused the actual reboot.
There is no particular action I take that causes this. It happens randomly. It has been happening since the upgrade today. I installed XCode4 on the computer from the app store, which did not upgrade but instead put another copy of Xcode. There was a thread I researched where someone suggests removing an AppleProfileFamily file from Sytem/Library, but I do not have that file on my system.
Here's the log:

After much more research, I found that people with my video card have been having this issue since OSX Lion and Apple still hasn't fixed it. This is incredibly disappointing. I will be contacting Apple for a refund on Mountain Lion soon if I can't find updated drivers.
Thanks very much for your help. -

Random Shut Down, Difficult restarts, Kernel Panic
Since installing a security update and some Fink Packages, my computer has been shutting down randomly. It only seems to "Crash" when I'm logged in (admin). My kids can log into their profile and it won't crash... (I think) And if I leave it at the login screen and no one uses it, the computer seems ok... It hasn't crashed yet.
It also seems that if I log in via ssh it doesn't crash either... Maybe it's something with my profile... I dunno...
It'll shut down without warning. No errors, no messages... it just powers off. When I try to start it back up, it shuts down over and over and it doesn't even boot. After the third or fourth try, it'll start up and I get the gray screen with the apple on it... Sometimes it hangs there and I have to start all over with the difficult boot up.
Once, I got a full screen Command Prompt with a bunch of text. The last line said "Double Panic: We're hanging here" Or something along those lines.
And just yesterday, I got a black box with several different languages telling me I had to reboot.
So here is the last entry of my /Library/Logs/panic.log

Can anyone decipher this?
I also tried to look at the:
/usr/libexec/panicdump
But it's all "program" looking info.. Anyone know what I need to use to open that so I can read it?
Any ideas???Ran a Hardware Test and all the hardware seems ok.
I wonder what could be making this thing lock up?
The main symptom is the reset button makes the computer turn off...
Dual 800mHz G4 w/SuperDrive Mac OS X (10.3.9) -
Macbook pro 2009 unibody with white screen and kernel panics
I upgrade to Lion a month or two ago and things have been working fine. A few days ago, I try to wake my computer from sleep and it freezes on a white screen. I reboot only to continue to find the white screen. I hear the chime every time on boot. From then on, I am having different responses on startup.
Initially I could boot to single user mode no problem, but would continue to get white screen on regular boot. I tried to reinstall lion, and on restart midway through install I got the half-gray "you need to restart" kernel panic screen.
Yesterday at apple store, it would not boot to single user, OS select, verbose, etc. modes. They told me it was logic board or hard drive.
Bough a SSD, successfully installed Snow Leopard, and then continued to have similar kernel panics.
Now, replaced originaly harddrive and successfully reinstalled Lion, although got a kernel panic on the halfway reboot (log posted below). Install finished, and now up and running for about an hour. Decided to reboot to check, and big surprise, one more kernel panic. (2nd log posted below).
Is this a logic board? Seems like the HD is not the problem since same issue with a SSD.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated, apply was very unhelpful (I am out of warranty, no applecare). Thanks

How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error
Cannot guarantee that it will reveal anything. As for using the other GPU all I say is you can try switching to it in Energy Saver preferences. -
Can't get past Kernel Panic!
I left my macbook running acquistion yesterday for about 2 hours and when I returned I could not wake it from sleep. I forced a shutdown holding the power button and now every time I turn on the macbook I am instructed to restart it, in several different languages. This screen comes up just after the "ping" when I turn it on and after the apple logo appears.
So far I have tried taking the battery out and holding the power button down for 5 seconds. Resetting the PRAM with "apple" "option" "p" and "r". Restarting in safe mode holding the "shift" key. Attempting to reboot from the instal CD disk 1 holding either the "option" key, the "x" key or the "c" key - when I do this the spinning gear appears for about 90 seconds and then reverts back to the restart kernel panic screen. I have also tried starting from the power source alone without the battery inseted. No Luck. And I ran a check of the hardware, holdig dowm the "d" key on start up with the disk inserted. No problems found.
I have no other external devices attached and I have made no modifactions to my Core 2 duo macbook that I got out of the box 3 weeks ago.
I am going to take it down to the store tomorrow unless anyone can think of a fix I have not yet tried.
Thank you for your help!Boot from your Snow Leopard DVD. If you still get the kernel panic, then you have a major hardware problem. Take it in for service.
If you can boot successfully from the Snow Leopard DVD:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now, boot the computer into Safe Mode and operate for a while to see if the kernel panics cease. You can
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Also, see OS X- How to log a kernel panic. Locate the panic log and post it here for us to examine.
OS X- About kernel panics -
Let's solve this kernel panic :)
OK here it is, just the facts.
Imac Intel slot-loading 20” Flatpanel, exactly as I bought it 2yrs ago from applestore(haven’t touched any RAM or ever opened the computer)
Safari 10.4.1x (recently downloaded the most recent updates)
No backups, so I cannot Erase and Reinstall, my son’s pictures are on here. Save your flames for someone else.
I was running a disk-burning utility and the Itunes cover art screensaver was on (the screensaver being my most probable suspect for crash because of its documented bugginess, but the cause is moot for me at this point.) I came back to my mac to check the progress and the screen was frozen on the screensaver (I want to note that the hue of the screensaver was pinkish as opposed to the actual color of the “album covers”, a not too subtle hint that somethin’ ain’t right) At this point nothing worked but a hard shutdown by holding the power button. Upon restart, kernel panic. Sigh
After several days of reading forums I present to you my not so unique, but as of yet unsolved problem, and a list of what I have tried unsuccessfully to do to resolve it. I am pasting this in several forums hoping to resolve it so you can search if someone does come up with a solution. Pardon me if I mix up cmd, option, ctrl, and alt…I am using a PC keyboard. I know what keys to press through trial and error at this point, I just don’t know what they’re called on macs :P ..
-zapped PRAM, take note a mac “compatible” keyboard is needed for this (Logitech g15 doesn’t work for this task, but the cheapie Logitech “Classic”200 does, focus on the problem people)
-C after startup to boot Installation disk and running Disk utility/Repair Disk gives error
Checking HFSPlus volume
/red catalog file entry not found for extent
Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure
Techtool Deluxe showed error in repairing the volume and directory tests, the rest passed
The partition which previously held Windows and has now been erased and formatted in an unsuccessfull attempt to install a copy of OSX onto reports as “no problems detected”: Attempts to erase this partition and install OSX onto it result in errors
-Shift(safe mode) gives kernel panic
-cmd/alt-O/F Firmware boot gives kernel panic
-T at startup makes a target disk I guess but since I don’t have several mac computers laying around this isn’t a viable option atm
-cmd/V (Verbose mode) loads the info below and stops
-cmd /S (Single User Mode) does the same as verbose mode, I am unable to type at the prompt, it is essentially frozen at the end
-Option at startup only gives kernel panic
-Archive and Reinstall-The main hard drive won’t mount so it seems all I will be able to do is erase that partition
- I think I covered all of them, If I missed something, it didn’t help, either :P
-I tried a brief attempt at giving myself a crash course in terminal bash commands, but decided to do this before I rack my brain over that (as a last resort I will learn to program another **** language that will become useless in a few years before I erase my son’s pictures)…..the terminal is the only place I could run a fsck but it just returns the next prompt, no sign that it did anything,
-I have heard that occasionally some people’s KP’s “resolve themselves”. I am not sure if this is while the panic screen is showing or just on a successive reboot. I would love for that to happen here. That would be BCS(Best Case Scenario)
Following is what appears when I start in Verbose or Single-user mode
Se .Looking for kernel cache file ‘System\Library\Caches\com.apple.kernelcahes\kernelcache.BC122279…………………………………… …………………<then pause for 30-45sec, then “finishes quickly with script below which goes too quick for me to read>

That’s it. Same happens in single-user mode. The cursor stops and I have to restart.
I can access the original install disc and suspect that if I can delete the cache files, or preference files, or whatever is pointing the boot sequence to the corrupted info I would be okay
*okay this is new, after clicking restart from “startup disk” on Installation disk I was holding down shift to try a safe boot again, and as the Kp screen came down there was text on the screen

It seems if I choose to use the install disks option to startup to the install disk then I can properly boot into single user mode in which fsck does work but it checks the install disk and not the HD, any way to switch that? is the HD "mounted at this point?Well, either way you will probably be spending a little money and more time on
the Mac project; the difference in buying a relatively inexpensive external FW
HDD and learning how to use it (and have it for backups and doing your own
tech work) -- or -- not having it, and paying someone who does have those tools
on-hand, is you won't have the hardware or ability to backup your stuff, or fix it.
You can get a good FW enclosed backup hard disk drive of reliable quality
from Other World Computing and use free Carbon Copy Cloner. You have
the computer's bootable install disc with its own Disk Utility & tools in it.
I like my LaCie 250GB FireWire externally enclosed (self contained including
a separate power supply; it can boot and run my Macs from clones I made)
and there is room enough for more than two complete computer content clones.
Bootable exact images of the entire contents of the machines.
Had I paid for a tech to do the troubleshooting (48 hours at a time, for three
months) on the one Mac, there is no way I could have afforded the computer
or the tech bill. And I found out things through doing for myself that my friends
who use Windows machines (and they take them apart, and curse them) don't
yet understand. The cure for the few Mac issues outside of some large part
failure, is to be self-sufficient in the things a user CAN do. Then the shop visit
is a rarer event, and money spent on hardware is better than on gasoline.
Gasoline here varies, on the road system from over $4 a gallon (near $5 diesel)
up to nearly $7-$9 a gallon where fuels are barged or air flown in. Think about that
when or if you eat any salmon caught in Alaskan waters... Most of the fleet is
sitting in the docks, so driving in a modern city is a matter of greater efficiency
and foresight. You could take a chance on that $1200. hydrogen cell kit's claims!
Good luck & happy computing!
PS: are you sure that you didn't spring for that AppleCare extended protection plan
back in the first year of ownership where it could have cost you maybe $160. and
added up to three years of extra coverage and tech support? If you did an enrolled it
then it would be a matter of getting the computer to an authorized shop for service.

Attempted update to 10.4.11 via Software Update. Machine crashed (screen went black, nothing made the machine responsive). Forced power down, powered back up, "need to restart computer". Great.
Disk Warrior rebuild, permissions repair, restart, KERNEL PANIC. Boot from OSX install disc and am greeted with "unable to install software on this computer" giving two options to restart or select startup disk. No matter, ran disk utility, repaired disk, repaired permissions, restart via Macintosh HD, KERNEL PANIC!!!!!!!!!!! UGH.
Now what?? I can use target disk mode to backup contents of computer to another but I really don't want to go to the extent of reinstalling OSX and reloading my data to the machine from the backup. Any ideas? Need to figure this out before tomorrow, any help is appreciated.Assuming this doesn't resolve the issue, what's the procedure for reinstalling OSX AND keeping my data intact? Can backup everything using target disk mode, just don't know how to re-load it once reinstalled.
Or even if there's a way to reinstall OSX without having to backup the data and re-load it. Thanks -

Constant Kernel Panic and Freezes
Hello. I've recently upgraded to SL on my MBP (clean install) about a month ago. It's been working flawlessly until this week, where at random times, my computer freezes up and the screen starts to flicker. When I try to restart, I get the screen that says I need to restart (kernel panic screen). Sometimes it takes multiple (as in 5 or 6) tries of restarting before I can boot up. I've tried software update, repairing permissions, resetting PRAM, etc. and nothing has seemed to work. Does anyone have any other possible solutions for me to try or any insight? Any help would be appreciated as I am a student and need my computer to be working. Thanks. Here is the log:

Kernel Panics for 2010 MacBook Pro 15" can anyone help?
This has been going on for a while now after the hard drive was originally replaced back in the summer. Tried fixing it myself, however no luck and it keeps coming back. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks

Apple is repairing all of these MacBooks Pro for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. Also, print the log and take it with you -
Kernel panic even without an OS installed...
I have a first gen Intel Macbook. It would boot into OS 10.6 but get less than a minute in and freeze and need restarting (kernel panic message on screen).
I have reset the PRAM (many times). I can boot into single user mode and run a file system check. There is no trouble in doing this. It reports changes made each time but then rebooting into the OS resulted in the same thing. It POSTS fine every time I boot (which has been many, lately!)
I keep speaking in the past tense because I recently got the machine to boot as host to another Mac in target mode from the OS install disk. I ran the install disk's Disk Utility and formatted the Macbook internal drive and partitioned it. Great! I set about to reinstall the OS. The installation had barely begun, when it froze again.
Now, with no OS, it boots to the flashing question mark folder, of course, and seems to sit there for ages like that, but if I try and boot any other way, I get the kernel panic almost immediately.
I do not have the original RAM, but have replaced each of the 2 installed SODIMMS with known good, compatible RAM and still the same deal with freezing.
I would have to conclude the problem is hardware, but where do I begin to diagnose what? Can anyone give me a list of potential candidates and which piece is more or less likely, given the symptoms?
Thank you all in advance for any advice or suggestions!itutorit wrote:

Just because the RAM is known to be good doesn't mean it is compatible with the logic board of that machine. You also said you had a nearly new 1/2 TB drive in it. Is that drive compatible? A 1st gen MacBook is 4 years old now. Some of the newer, fancier stuff just won't work in it. -
Help! Kernel panic whenever I plug in my new 2TB WD My Passport
Hello everyone,
I have a 27 inch iMac that is still under AppleCare. When I plug in my 2 TB WD My Passport external drive, I get the screen that says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." When the computer restarts, if I don't eject the drive fast enough it will display the same message. I have no other problems with connecting external devices. I have even tried a friend's 1TB WD Passport external drive and it worked perfectly fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I have copied the kernel panic from the system diagnostic report below. Thanks in advance!

If it's not that, then it might be something in the chipset of the WD external enclosure that doesn't play well with the Mac.
If you look around in Sys Prefs>Login Items, anything there from WD? Also look in /Library/Startup Items and there and in /System/Library/ for Launch Daemons or Launch Agents.
Get FindAnyFile and enter "WD" Hold down Option(alt) when hitting Find.

TS3742 Installed Cisco Linksys VUSB. Now my MacBook Air restarts and I get a kernel panic
Bought a new Cisco Linksys router a few weeks ago. Had to install their VUSB to manage the peripherals. Now I keep getting this panic message and my MB Air restarts whenever I log out. How do I fix this?
Same issue here.
If Cisco VUSB is running (in the dock) when the Macbook Air goes to sleep, when it awakens a kernel panic occurs every time. Now I've had to set Cisco VUSB to not launch upon startup to ensure I don't forget about it when putting my Macbook Air to sleep. Very annoying.
Thread on CISCO\Linksys forums: http://community.linksys.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/VUSB-OS-X-10-8-2-and-Auto-Conne ct/td-p/620126
I'm on 10.8.4... and this is Cisco VUSB 1.2.0 (SXUPTP Driver 1.10.0).
