Where are my backed up photos in Time Machine?

I'm trying to retrieve some photos that I have backed up in Time Machine but they are not there. Here is what I've been doing.
1. open up iTunes
2.turn on my external hard drive.
3. Go to File>browse Backups
I can always see the photos in my library in time machine "Today" , but when I try to view the library from earlier backups it just says "loading photos" but no photos ever load.
What is going on here? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to retrieve some photos that I have backed up in Time Machine but they are not there. Here is what I've been doing.
1. open up iTunes
I assume you mean iPhoto not iTunes - you do want to use iPhoto for photos
2.turn on my external hard drive.
I've not done this but since yo have having problems I would have the drive on before launching iPhoto (although it really should not make a difference)
3. Go to File>browse Backups
I can always see the photos in my library in time machine "Today" , but when I try to view the library from earlier backups it just says "loading photos" but no photos ever load.
How long have you waited? How is your TM drive connected? Is it possible that youare not waiting long enough?

  • Where are the actual files on the  Time Machine backup hard drive?

If I take my time machine back up hard drive and hook it up to another computer, I cannot find my files. For instance, the files that would be in my home folder (pictures, music and movies).
When I open the finder window and go to my user folder, all I see are the folders, but they are aliases.
I get the message that the volume "documents" cannot be found.
    So where are these files?
    Thanks in advance.

I am not running leopard on the other computers, and so Time Machine is not available.
On the other computers, I need to have classic support, so I haven't installed Leopard, so that is not an option.
I just don't understand why these files do not show up on other computers. At some level, if I can't access the files on other computers, it nearly defeats the purpose of Time Machine.

  • Where are my Safari bookmarks located in time machine?

I did a clean install of Lion, and want to import only my bookmarks from timemachine.
    Where can I find the bookmarks? I can't find /Library/Safari, or bookmarks.plist.

From the Finder menu bar, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... and enter
    ~/Library/Safari
in the text box that opens. A Finder window will open. Enter Time Machine and restore the file named "Bookmarks.plist" in that window.

  • Where are by backed up photos?

A little over two years ago, I purchased an iPod touch 5. I used it a lot and took hundreds of pictures that are important to me. A few months ago, my iPod stopped working. When I checked the backup history, I saw that my iPod was backed up before it stopped working. On my PC, I can find the iCloud photostreams, but nothing else. If they are still accessible, where can I find the other photos?

Drag the music and photo libraries to the new drive, launch iTunes and iPhoto with the Option key held down, and point them to that instance of the libraries.

  • When I tried to back up my computer, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old files, the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.

I haven't backed up my computer in over a year. When I tried to back it up today, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old photos and documents (including all the pictures from the year I studied abroad/traveled a bunch), the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or how I could fix it? I really don't want to lose all those photos

So you were doing a time machine backup to another partition on the same hard drive? Just trying to gather some information so i can provide a helpful response.

  • Where are all of my photo albums?

I just updated my computer & found that Iphoto is now gone & that Photos has replaced it. Where are all of my photo albums that I spent so much time organizing in Iphoto now? I can't find them anywhere in Photos. It's a very badly, designed system!

    Hi Eric,
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I have a time capsule doing automatic backups on my iMac.  I would not know which date to restore from as I just happened to notice the missing mail when I went to look for one of the old messages.
I tried your suggestion of checking the Mail/V2 files in finder, but it did not work.  There are messages there, but they too only go back a year.
If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

    Welcome to the WD Community.
    1) I assume I can  just hook the unit up via USB to my Mac and use iPartiion to reformat the drives, assuming each of the 4T drives will be seen by iPartition as a separate drive. That much seems straighforward.
Yes, and in case you ipartition dont see the unit properly, you can use the disk utilities on your Mac and you will be able to reformat the unit to make it compatible with your system.
    2) Is my next step to reinstall the WD software and how do I do that? I've downloaded the Drive Utilities and Securities install apps - I assume I just run these with the drive still connected and that's all I need to do?
    Yes, just run the applications.
    3) What about the firmware update for Mac - when should I run that??
Normally, firmware updates are released to fix any issues that you might encounter on the drive. the latest one was released on 9/24/2014 and it fixed an issue with the drive dropping off of the list after system wakes up from standby mode.
    5) And what about the "My Book Live Duo Setup" app for Mac - is that for a completely different model? What's the difference between "My Book Live Duo" and "My Book Duo"? It's these little things that I find so confusing.
Those are different units. The MBL Duo is a NAS (Network attached system) and the My Book Duo is a DAS (Direct attached system)
    6) Lastly, when I have all the software installed, is that when I follow the procedure described in the Knowledge Base article ID 5724, "How to install a My Book Live or My Book Live Duo on Windows (8, 7, Vista, or XP) or Mac OSX for the first time"? Or is that procedure only for "My Book Live Duo" but not for "My Book Duo"??
That procedure is for the network units, not for your drive.

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

  • Where are my backed up bookmarks on my external drive?

    Firefox backup issue:
This is concerning restoring my Bookmarks after having to replace my laptop PC. For the past several years I’ve been backing up my laptop to an external hard drive. I’ve always included the User subdirectory in that backup. The User/Dave/Appdata/Local/Mozilla/Firefox/Profile s/d is included. Today I needed to restore bookmarks from a prior backup in April, 2012 after reading the Firefox help on this subject, I accessed my external drive and looked in the s/d mentioned above. However when I clicked on the “wp83jzms.default” file, instead of seeing a list of backup dates from which to choose, I only saw files with “Cache” and “unclassifier” in the file name. Where are the backed up bookmarks from that date?
I also noticed that a different backup had stopped capturing files part way into the Local s/d so that the Mozilla s/d was not written to backup. Wonder what’s up there?
    I’m using Windows 7 and Firefox 13.0.1

That is the wrong profile folder and only stores the cache files.
You need the profile folder part in AppData\Roaming to get the main profile folder files.

  • New to Mac: Backing Up Applications (without Time Machine)

I just got my first mac and I'm wondering if applications can be backed up or need to be reinstalled? I'm used to working with partitions in Windows and currently I only backup my data partitions -- I never backup my /Windows or my /Program Files because if I reinstalled Windows I'd need to reinstall the applications anyway (let's ignore Windows backup imaging programs for now).
I've never been a fan of imaging programs for a lot of reasons. I'm in the process of trying Time Machine so I don't want to talk about that here because I'm trying to learn about backing up outside of time machine (even though it may be the best solution for many people).
So on my mac I'm currently only backing up my home directory. If I go ahead and backup my /Applications directory, is this something that could be copied directly back from an external hard drive? If I were to reinstall OS X 10.6, could I then attach an external drive and just copy over the /Applications folder and have it work??? As everyone knows, in a Windows environment this is impossible, so I'm eager to see if this is one of the other things that make Mas flexible. It would be mind blowing for me to find out that re-installing photoshop on a Mac is just a copy and paste operation, whereas on the PC it's a production!
And lastly, since there is no registry per se, where are application preferences stored on a Mac -- so I can back that up, too.
    Thank you!

I think we've answered you query: I'm wondering if applications can be backed up or need to be reinstalled? The answer is yes they can be backed up and no they don't have to be reinstalled. That's accomplished by using cloning apps such as CCC or SD! Time Machine is a different animal and you've excluded it from the discussion. This is Macland and we use cloning apps to make bootable backups which meet all of our needs and eliminate any of what you also included in your OP.

  • Iphone photos in time machine

I have downloaded photos from my iphone 4 into iphoto. When i look in the time machine only some of the photos appear as thumbnails whilst the others are white blank pages. the current time machine page shows them all correctly but earlier pages [back in time] only shows some of them correctly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Ian

First be sure that you have disabled automatic syncing as outlined in step one.  If you don't, when you connect your phone it will start syncing and overwrite your backup.  Then you righ-click on the name of your phone on the left side of iTunes and select "Restore from Backup..."  from the pop-up menu that opens.  Don't click on Restore on the Summary tab.  It should look like the photo below:

    EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!
IS THERE ANY WAY TO RETREIVE AN ACCIDENTALLY DELETED BACK UP FROM MY TIME MACHINE DRIVE????
In other words, I emptied out a folder on my main MAC to make space and the next subsequent backup backed up the EMPTY FOLDER and then deleted the "old backup" that actually contained the contents of the very important folder.
Now only the emptied folder exists on my MAC and in the two backups on my Time machine backup drive.
This was clearly a big mistake on my part not realizing that the "old backup" being deleted by Time Machine would include backed up files that I had no intention of getting rid of....
    What can I do now?
Is DATA RETREIVAL even an option?
I am sure that the Folder of files that I need are on the most recently deleted "OLD BACKUP" but how do I get to this, if even possible?????
    Super desperate situation here...

It may be possible to recover some of the data, if it hasn't been overwritten, but it won't be cheap or easy.
You've posted in the Time Capsule forum, but you mention a "backup drive."  If your backups are on a Time Capsule's internal HD, instead of an external HD, it's even worse.
    See Data Recovery.
    Good luck.

  • My HD has been replaced and when backing up from my time machine the transferred got interrupted

My HD has been replaced and when backing up from my time machine the transferred got interrupted. When Mac book booted only half the data. So I erased the hard drive to start again although I now can't restore from my time machine  as its saying not enough space on HD to restore. Please help coz I'm freaking out!

I seriously doubt that you can do that. I've never heard of anyone doing something like this. I also strongly suspect that that windows software didn't preserve all the resource fork, ownership and hard links correctly.
You are left with manual migration of your data back to your computer. this isn't as hard as you make it sound. You just need to copy you own stuff back. also use the following [post|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to migrate important parts of you user library, Mail, iphoto etc. You will have to reinstall your applications by hand.
