Where are my fonts meant to be?

I have been having problems with applications freezing lately. i do not know if this has to do with an extraordinary amount of fonts i seem to have collected. where are these fonts meant to be? there seems to be so many folders they could go into! which ones should be where? anyone else have similar issues resolved? I have ATM, but not sure how and if it can control this? or if the problem is more because of where they are in the first place. help, this has been driving me nuts!

This KnowledgeBase article should provide some help in terms of background information:
Mac OS X: Font Locations and Their Purposes
As to ATM, it's not Mac OS X compatible, so that won't help. To manage a large number of fonts, you can use the included Font Book, or get a Mac OS X native font management utility such as Suitcase (or one of the several others that exist).
Hope this helps.

  • Where are the fonts!? What the...

    Hi everyone,
I've just received my shipment of Adobe CS4 Design Premium for Windows and immediately installed it on my new laptop. The school I attend works a lot with typefaces like Optima, Frutiger, Helvetica etc.
Here's my problem. Where are these fonts? I was told that they're standard on a Mac, but that Adobe CS4 introduces these specific fonts to Windows. Instead, I have the lame *** assortment of boring and frankly rather useless Windows fonts. I paid a lot of money for this product and I am already irritated because I need these fonts - and they're not here. Or are they? Nowhere on the web was this denied. I got the assurance that these fonts are included. Sounds like BS now...
If anyone can help me out, this would be great. And what would really be awesome is if someone can perhaps send me these fonts (for Windows) via email. Basically all the fonts that are standard on a MAC (Optima, Helvetica etc.) and were supposed to be included here.
That would really be great. [email protected]
    Thanks.
PS: The reason I won't switch over to a Mac is because all my programs are for Windows. Switching over to a Mac will be too costly and I can essentially do the same work on a Windows computer nowadays as a Mac.

If you buy fonts from Adobe, the standard license allows use on up to 20 computers (you can buy site licensing if you need more) and from the license:
14.7. Font Software. If the Software includes font software --
14.7.1 You may use the font software with the Software on Computers as described in Section 2 and output
the font software to any output device(s) connected to such Computer(s).
14.7.2 If the Permitted Number of Computers is twenty, you may download the font software to the
memory (hard disk or RAM) of two output devices connected to at least one of such Computers for the
purpose of having the font software remain resident in such output device, and of two additional such
output devices for every multiple of twenty represented by the Permitted Number of Computers.
14.7.3 You may take a copy of the font(s) you have used for a particular file to a commercial printer or
other service bureau, and such service bureau may use the font(s) to process your file, provided such
service bureau has a valid license to use that particular font software.
14.7.4 You may convert and install the font software into another format for use in other environments,
subject to the following conditions: A computer on which the converted font software is used or installed
will be considered as one of your Permitted Number of Computers. Use of the font software you have
converted will be pursuant to all the terms and conditions of this agreement. Such converted font software
may be used only for your own customary internal business or personal use and may not be distributed or
transferred for any purpose, except in accordance with Section 4.4 of this agreement.
14.7.5 You may embed copies of the font software into your electronic documents for the purpose of
printing and viewing the document. If the font software you are embedding is identified as "licensed for
editable embedding" on Adobe’s website at
http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/embeddingeula.html, you may also embed copies of that font
software for the additional purpose of editing your electronic documents. No other embedding rights are
implied or permitted under this license.
This is actually pretty generous. The standard license from Linotype limits you to 5 workstations, but allows you to transfer the font for output at the printer provided thay don't need to do any editing, in which case they need their own license. Embedding in PDF is also permitted. Modification of the font (including conversion), on the other hand, is completely prohibited. Other foundries and distributors will have their own licensing restictions/requirements, and your license for the same font might vary depending upon where you purchase it. Some licenses prohibit commercial use (this is true of most so-called "free" fonts) unless you upgrade to a more expensive commercial license, making them utterly useless to a professional designer. In short, you need to read the agreement to find out what is and isn't allowed.

  • Where are the font caches located?

Trying to trash my font caches but cant find them.

It moves to the Trash all font cache.
Not quite. It clears any and all cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode. It doesn't do anything to the system cache files.
All font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later)
I know that info came from one of Apple's own Knowledge Base articles, but it's completely out of date. The user font cache files haven't been in that location since Tiger. All font cache files (along with Font Book's database) are now deeply buried in a hidden folder. Part of the name may be different from Mac to Mac, but they are now here:
    /private/var/folders/3K/3Kdt7kk4Ghim10j+GZwim++++TI/-Caches-/com.apple.FontRegis try/
Don't try and edit anything in here yourself. Use the command below to clear font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

  • Where are FCPX fonts stored on the mac?

Final Cut X seems to store its fonts somewhere other than the normal system library fonts folder. Or it finds other fonts on the computer that are in other places than that folder.
I am trying to find where a font is located on my computer that seems to only be in FCPX. It doesn't show up in the fonts folder, doesn't show up when I search with spotlight, and doesn't show up in any other programs, even Word or Pages. Any ideas for where I should look?
The font is called Proxima Nova.
I found this through a Google search:
"These fonts are stored in Final Cut Pro or Motion in the following subfolder: Contents / Frameworks / TextFramework.framework / Versions / A / Resources / Fonts. To get inside Final Cut Pro or Motion, right- or control-click the application and choose Show Package Contents from the context menu."
But those folders on my computer are empty. Where my font at?
    FCPX 10.1.4

    Do you like that font?

  • Where are my fonts kept for AppleWorks? OSX 10.4.7

OSX 10.4.7 I use AppleWorks, but where and which files store the fonts for AppleWorks. Font Book activates fonts, but it appears AppleWorks stores the ones it uses somewhere unknown. I see fonts in AppleWorks which are not even supported or show up in Font Book. Anyone know?

    I see fonts in
AppleWorks which are not even supported or show up in
    Font Book. Anyone know?
AppleWorks also runs on Mac OS 8 and 9, as well as Mac OS X. So it can also use the fonts available to these older operating systems. They're stored in the <Macintosh HD/System Folder/Fonts> folder.

  • Where are my fonts?? where is the file??

I recently got a new imac with leopard. I am donating my old G5 to a pal. I am in the process of removing all my files but will leave the programs etc. on the computer. Same with the fonts. I use suitcase fusion and have for years. According to the suitcase fusion program I have my fonts (not the system ones) stored in a file called vault. I remember calling it vault and remember putting it on there so many years ago but now when I type "vault" into the search box for the computer nothing comes back. Where is this folder?? so I thought I would just try searching for a name of a font that is in that folder (I know it's there somewhere because suitcase fusion can activate the font and I use it all the time including today) and nothing appears in the results field.
I have made sure that I have typed the name perfectly
I have made sure that I have clicked on "file name" not "content"
I have made sure that I have clicked on "this computer"
    but no results.
    where is this folder?
    is it invisible?
I have kind of tried searching manually for it but to no avail.
    help??
    kt''

I'm not familiar with Fusion but it very probably accesses the fonts which live in their usual places and activates/deactivates them: the 'vault' may be just a virtual thing it uses to show what it's doing.
Fusion apart, fonts live in three places:
(hard disk)/Library/Fonts - available to everyone
((hard disk)/(user)/Library/Fonts - available to the user only
(hard disk)/System/Library/Fonts - System fonts which you should not (and indeed cannot) delete.

  • Where are my Fonts in Fontbook ?

Hello, excuse please this translation francais / English but my English is so bad. Fonts portfolio since I installed(settled) leopard does not work any more. With Tiger, quite my fonts was present. Since Leopard, only fonts systems are present, but any fonts user and no fonts of the bibliotheque displays. Nevertheless in the Information Systeme of the menu Apple, they are all present, activated, and validated. Word recognizes them, Appleworks recognizes them, but not mail, nor Calendar as well as the Apple applications which recognize it more but not the totality. Apparently I am not alone with this problem. My fonts is stored(tidied up) on the good place(square) and with Tiger everything works very well nevertheless. That to make?

Don't worry about your English; it's better than my French!
Have you tried a separate account - either the Guest account or a different one you might have set up, and see if the problem is going on there?
Here's what I would do next in your user account:
-Don't touch anything in the system fonts folder /System/Library/Fonts.
-Quit all your applications, including Font Book.
-Trash the Font Book plist (again).
    -Working in the Finder:
    - create a new folder on the Desktop and drag ALL your user fonts into it from ~/Library/Fonts.
    - create another new folder and drag ALL the fonts from /Library/Fonts into it.
    -Restart the Mac.
-Open Font Book so it will be forced to update and see that it only has those system fonts available.
-Use Font Book Preferences and set the Default Install Location to Computer.
-Go to your temporary folder on the desktop that has the fonts from the Library fonts. Double-click on the files (one at a time or many at a time, it doesn't matter) to install them. When they are all installed...
-In Font Book Preferences, change the Default Install Location to User
-Go to the other Desktop folder (that has your User fonts in it) and double-click on those so they will install.
Font Book will install copies of the fonts, so those desktop folders will still have fonts in them - throw the folders in the Trash.
    Quit out of Font Book.
See if there's any change after all that!
(Marc - perhaps you'll take care of translating as necessary? Thanks for the note about "police" - I thought it must mean "font" because of the context, but couldn't relate it to any root or word that I knew!)

  • Where are the fonts???

    Okay, I'm confused.
I downloaded a whole bunch of fonts (from http://www.webpagepublicity.com/free-fonts.html and http://www.dafont.com) and I can see them when I open FontBook, but when I go to Word they aren't in my list of fonts. And some of them don't even appear in Library>Fonts. I don't get it; what am I doing wrong?
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi CherieTomato,
you have to reset the Word font cache before the new font becomes available. You can find it here: /Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11). Just drag that file to the trash and restart Word.

  • Plus de "lien" avec les typo pour titre / Where are my font ?

    Hello,
I'm a french user, so sorry for my bad english.
    Hello,
I just opened Premiere CS4, and I was left down an exclamation  point, double clicking, a window opens and tells me that the typo is not used.
It is in the PC, I checked, but stronger still when I want to create a  new title with the typo selected for example, or another elsewhere (as in the  example in the window title style) none appears to be "present", and tab  property titling remains on the typo "AR BERKLEY. I reinstalled the complete  suite, and the problem remains unsolved.
How do I find my typos active  bases?
Thank you in advance for your answers and your support.
    best regards.
    And now in French :
    Bonjour,

    David,
After you look over Eddie's links, you might want to go to Window in the Toolbar at the top of PrPro. Look down the list of possible "Panels" and see if Styles is checked, or unchecked. It appears that the Styles Panel might be missing from your Workspace. Titler (the sub-application) has several possible Panels. It's possible to have just the main Titler Panel open, but the other Panels closed. Sometimes, I accidently click an X and close one, or more. Using Window>[selected from the drop-down] usually restores what I closed. If not, Window>Workspaces>[choice of Workspaces, both default and any Custom Workspaces] will recover for me. Let's hope that you can do the same. Eddie's links probably cover most of that, and probably in more detail.
Hope that it helps and good luck,
    Hunt
