Where are my mailboxes and mail?

Last night I downloaded OS X 10.8.4 to my iMac and now all of my Mailboxes and mail from yesterday back are not visible.  Where can I find them?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

  • Where are my Mailboxes, and the rest of my Notes ?

I just got a new (Late 2013, Yosemite 10.10.1) 27" iMac to replace my old (Late 2009) 27" iMac. When I started it up the first time I was glad to see that all my contacts were in my Contacts, all my  special dates were in my Calendar, all of my Bookmarks were in Safari and all of my Songs and Podcasts were in iTunes.
What I did not see was my Custom Mailboxes and "VIP's" in Mail (Version 8.1), and only some of my notes in Notes (Version 3.1) were there.
Not sure where to go from here ???

    Hi Brenden,
Thank you for your response. When I moved over to the new iMac I did not do a migration. I had been having problems with the old iMac, which my local Apple store, after a series of tests, determined to be a software issue. Therefore I did not want bring it over to the new iMac. I have been reinstalling new copies of my non-Apple applications from there original sources and retrieving, only absolutely necessary (i.e. photos and financial info), data from a, Time Machine backed up, external hard drive, folder by folder.
I read the articles that you suggested and found them informative and helpful. In particular the one regarding mailboxes.
Mail (Yosemite): Import or export mailboxes
For my own peace of mind, I called Apple support and with their assistance, walking me through the process, I was able to retrieve the missing Mailboxes. Since I had hooked up my external hard drive to the new iMac and backed it up, I was not able to access the backup data from the old iMac via Time Machine. It would not go back beyond the date of the first backup of the new one, even though the data was there on the hard drive. I double clicked the external hard drive icon on the Desktop to open it and was able to obtain the missing files that way using "Import Mailboxes..." from the File menu in the Mail app.
Thanks again for your reply and assistance,

    Hi megamike1969,
I've been losing some apps also in the Dock. As Niel said I think is that you may be able to just drag them back to the Dock, if you can find them.
What I do is open Launchpad and while you're in there, drag the application to the Dock. If you can't locate the apps, then disregard this post.

  • What are smart mailboxes and why do i need both smart and "normal" ones?

What are smart mailboxes and why do I need both smart and "normal" mailboxes?

    Hi Kingoftypos,
Thanks for that clarification. So, now it appears that the ultimate purpose of a Smart Mailbox is to point to all emails that meet the criteria in a single place, so if they are spread among several mailboxes, you will be able to see them all together. Here is an article from Apple that describes it:
A Smart Mailbox displays in one location messages that are stored in other mailboxes, so you don’t have to move messages between mailboxes. The messages displayed by a Smart Mailbox are based on criteria you define, and are automatically updated to include new messages that match your criteria. For example, you might create a Smart Mailbox that displays all messages found in all mailboxes from a specific sender.
If you change a message in a Smart Mailbox, such as marking the message as read or unread, or moving or deleting the message, the change is reflected in the mailbox where the message is actually stored.
So, adam, I would think that, if you had mail going to a lot of different places, and wanted to be able to see a particular set of those in a single place, you would use a smart mailbox. Maybe use the rules to direct your mail to different places to start with, but a smart mailbox to bring a set of common ones all together into a single smart mailbox?
Maybe you have Rules move your Amazon mail to an Amazon folder and your Apple mail to an Apple folder, but then you have a Smart Mailbox that contains any mail that has the word "Receipt" in the Subject line?
    Just a thought....
    Cheers,
    GB

  • How do I hide my mailbox and mail contents from other users, leaving other functions of my iMac accessible?

How do I hide my mailbox and mail contents from other users, leaving other functions of my iMac accessible?

You don't have to shut down the computer to switch accounts. All you do is click the Apple symbol in the upper left and choose Log Out and that's it. You can also set up Faster User Switching by:
    1. Open System Preferences - Accounts
    2. Click Login Options
    3. Check the box called "Show fast user switching menu as" then choose from either icon, short name or name.
Then when someone wants to switch users they can. The advantage of this method is if you are have a document open and don't want to close it the document will remain open. If the other user attempts to shut down the computer they can't until you have logged out thereby saving all your data.
A very simple and elegant solution.

Now that I've switched to ICloud where are the mailboxes that were stored on my Mac?

On your mac, mailboxes are listed under one of several categories.  Some are "on my mac" and others are in "icloud".  Those emails in mailboxes "on my mac" are strictly local, they do not connect with iCloud.  As Julian points out, all mailboxes on your mac are still there.  They will not be on your other devices.

  • Mail: Where are email messages and address book saved?

    Good morning.
I would like to backup both emails and the address book in Mail.
Where are these located on my harddrive?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Again Bruce,
    On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    For Address Book, quit AB...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/

  • Where are Smart Mailbox settings?

    Hello
I set up a large number of Smart Mailboxes on my Macbook and they synced over to my iMac. Now, however, they have disappeared from the Macbook and i am getting a prompt to delete them on the iMac when it tries to sync.
Can anyone tell me where the Smart Mailbox settings are kept so I can copy it and let the sync happen and not have to recreated the whole thing?
    Thanks heaps
    deb

They are in the /Home/Library/Mail/ folder:
    SmartMailboxes.plist
    SmartMailboxes.plist.backup
    VersionedSmartMailboxes.plist
    VersionedSmartMailboxes.plist.backup

  • Relationship of Mailboxes and Mail Items

I am having trouble figuring out how mailboxes related to email items.  Until now I have been sending and recieving via a POP mail account which is linked to an ISP email address. Sooner or later I am going to migrate away from that ISP, so I have also set up a gmail account and forwarded all the mail from that address to the Mac mail app. All well and good, but now I have two mailboxes in my inbox area, one Google, and one POP. So I would like to foward the email address associated with that POP to the Gmail account and delete that second mailbox. But if I go to delete the mailbox, the warning dialogue box says 'Deleting a mailbox permanently removes it and any messages it contains. This action cannot be undone.' (my bolds.)
So is there a way of retaining the email data, but removing the mailbox? Pardon me for asking, but this detail, which I would have thought is important, is not explained in the documentation, as far as I can see (although happy to be corrected on that score).

    Hello Jonathan
If I understand your question correctly, you basically want to backup" the mail in givien mailboxes BEFORE you delete them, correct?
If this is the case, one method of backing-up a given mailbox is to RIGHT CLICK on the desired Mail Box, RIGHT-CLICK on it (or CONTROL-CLICK) to expose a contextual menu, then select "Export Mailbox" form the menu.
A dialog box will appear, asking you to decide WHERE you want that exported copy to reside.  This is NOT a dynamic backup, but rather a full copy of the contents of that particular mail folder/mailbox.
Once you've done this procedure with all of the mailboxes you wish to "export", simply reverse this process once you've established your new Gmail account.  Under Mails FILE menu, you'll find a command which reads "Import Mailboxes" .  Use this command ti import the mailboxes you've previously "exported".
There are other Mail backup tasks, like exporting your "rules" for instance.

  • Where are Netscape mailboxes?

I am trying to import Netscape mailboxes from an iMac (slot loading) to an Intel Macbook using Mail via a wireless network. The Macbook has OSX v10.4.11. The iMac has OSX v10.3.9.
Where are the Netscape mailboxes located on the iMac?
    Thanks.
    -Joe

    Kappy,
I have found valid mailboxes at Home:Library:Mozilla:Profiles:Default:65sii1fg.slt:Mail:(popservername) that will import successfully. However, I think I have found the problem. When I imported the inbox and sent mailboxes the imports contained 200+ messages dating from 2005 through part of 2007. Further checking revealed that inbox has 600+ and sent has 400+ messages. I am going to trim this down to about 100 messages each and try again. I'll let you know what happens.

  • Where are my Calendars and my Notes??

I have just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and am checking through everything.  Most things appear ok (even if Mail is rather different....)  However two vital things I need appear incorrect:
    1.  I run several calendars and manage my whole work via them - I see clients for two practices and manage them via my calendars plus everything else.  It appears that my work calendars and a few others have disappeared (including all my booked clients for tomorrow!!!) and it even appears to have picked up a recurring calendar item that I deleted 12 months ago.....  Really hoping this will be quick and easy to fix!
    2.  I have been using Notes within Mail for everything - I no longer use a pen and paper.  It's great that Notes have been moved out to be on their own but where are all my notes with details of all sorts of vital things?
Hoping you can provide some urgent suggestions as it is 10:49 pm here, so Apple Support is not available till 9:00am tomorrow and I need to know a few things  before then (like, what clients do I have when, and what is the Case Number of the Apple Support call I made this morning about this install?)
    THanks
    Suzy

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files (purchases and songs from CD etc) and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
