Where are my "old" mails?

I had to re-configure our OpenDirectory Server; so all users in the LDAP Database have been deleted. (of course)
(I deleted the OpenDirectory Master and set up the OD Master again)
OK - I re-created all users and configured them like in the settings before - no problem!
But all emails of each user got deleted as well. (IMAP)
My question:
Does the mails still exist on the server (somewhere e.g. in /var/spool/...), or are they really deleted permanently?
Thanks in advance - Chris

I've found a solution:
NOTE: Before you perform the following steps, you must be logged in as the root user!
All mails of the Mail-Server are stored in the directory /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail
The only problem is, that the name of the folders inside this directory contains only numbers and letters.
(e.g. 7C493120-D5S3-2A48-391-8G6B7E91F601)
So the only challenge is, that you find the correct folder, which contains the mails of the desired user.
As a little trick, you can open each folder and take a look into the cur directory.
This directory contains one file for each mail. Again, these filenames contains only numbers and letters.
When you open such a file, you can see the header and contents of each mail.
So it's easier to identify which folder belongs to which user!
That's it!

  • Where are my old mail folders

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and though the mail program says that my old folders are in Library:Mail, when I go to the Library, there isn't any Mail folder at all. Help!

Which Library folder are you looking in? There are three of them, and what you're looking for is in Home/Library.
If Mail works, then the folder is definitely where it should be.

  • Where are my old documents ?

where are my old documents ?
    My created documents before 2012

    Hi Jean,
Are you able to log into files.acrobat.com using your Adobe ID and password?
Your documents will be there if you utilized our document storage service.
    Let me know!

  • Where are the e-mails?

I reinstalled mail today, put the old mail folder back in the library from the user library folder.
Now mail says it has 2 or more messages, except I don't see them...
I am getting pretty desperate here... Where did my mail go?
You would think that if you keep your library mail folder and insert it in the same space again after reinstalling, that everything will be there.
Rules, spam, signatures, it is all gone...
I am pretty sure that I put the correct folder back, it also does not help to rebuild the mailboxes...
    Any insight????

    Catherine,
You have evidence of leftover files from when operating in Panther and Mail 1.3 -- specifically, all but Info.plist and the Messages folder are no longer needed, and if you check the dates the others were last modified, you find that it will prior to the upgrade to Tiger. These can be very problematic in ways not easy to describe. There are number of topics about the issue of leftover files. I want you to read the article at the link below, and perhaps get back to me with some observations, before attempting any changes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301315
This issue of leftover files applies not only to mailboxes you have previously created (which are in the Mailboxes folder the article mentioned) but can also apply to those mailboxes in account folders created prior to the upgrade to Tiger.
Also, please examine the size of each file or folder. It is very important to compare the size of the file named "mbox" with that of the Messages folder. If the mbox is greater in size than the Messages folder, then not all messages have been converted to be in the Messages folder. If Messages is larger, then probably all were converted -- if none are know to be missing from before the upgrade to Tiger, then simply remove all leftover files.
The path to the Mail folder is Home/Library/Mail -- within the Mail folder are one or more account folders and the Mailboxes folder.
In a pre-conversion to Tiger mailbox, the only file that really mattered, in regard to message content, was the file "mbox". In a mailbox properly created and established in Tiger, the only thing that really matters is the folder named Messages.
Once all leftover files have been removed (done while Mail is NOT running, btw), then at the first level of the Mail folder, find the file named Envelope Index -- delete it, and relaunch Mail. Mail will say it is ready to import all your mailboxes-- allow this to continue, and it will only be re-indexing all the mailboxes, and all the messages should once again be accessible.
If you think missing, pre-Tiger are missing, then they might be in the mbox files, and the lengthy topic at the link below, may also be of assistance:

Let me know any questions, or discomfort you have.

  • My photostream photos dissapeared - only the last 1000 show...where are my old photos???

    Hi,
i am totally confused and frustrated with iCloud.
i had many many photos on my Photostream and am removing all i can from my iphone (after synchroniszing on the cloud) as i run often out of space on the phone. whatever happened, all of a sudden, i can only see the last 1000 images on my Photostream - all of the others are GONE! i havent touched nor deleted anything. on the contrary, i even upgraded my storage to 55GB to be sure i have enough space (iphone reports free 38 GB on my iCloud space). I cant find my older Photostream photos any more neither when connecting from my iphone, nor from my iPhoto and aparently they are nowhere to be found on my iCloud. WHERE are my photos??!!! it will be a huge disaster if i lost them and not sure how to start understanding paying for a reliable cloud and loosing it all? anyone any idea???

First of all, photo stream storage is separate from regular icloud storage, so buying more space is not necessary.
When you take a photo on a device that has photo stream turned on, that photo is added to the local photo stream group and uploads to icloud's servers, which then download the pics to other devices where they are also stored in their photo stream group.  After 30 days, the photo is deleted from the server, but not the devices.  (No more than 1000 pics are accepted, after which old ones are delete to make room for new ones.)
If, however, you turn off photo stream on one device, the photos in the photo stream group will be deleted.  If you later turn it back on, then only photos on the server will download to the group.  Pictures that were deleted from the server due to the 30 day rule will no longer be available.
It is advised that whenever you have photos appearing in the photo stream group, you move them to a permanent album if you wish to save them.
In short, photo stream is a conduit for copying photos from one device/computer to another - never treat it as some kind of permanent storage service; it isn't.

  • Where are my old events in Cal?

I can no longer see my old events from 2010 and 2011 in iCal? Where are they? I have not deleted them. Any help would be appreciated.
    Many thanks

Mary. Another Forum mentions some problems about iCal not deleting events and relating this to a possible glitch in 10.5.5. I wonder then whether my problem is yet another glitch.

  • Where are the e-mail settings?

Hi, I have an E72, I have set up a POP3 e-mail server and I can receive e-mails with no problem, but I cannot send any! Now, I know how to solve the problem, I simply have to change the outgoing port number to the new one given by my e-mail provider, but I CANNOT FIND WHERE ARE THE OUTGOING SERVER SETTINGS!
The E-mail -> Settings -> Mailbox name -> Mailbox settings tab only has one server setting in it, and it says "Server name". There are no separate settings for Incoming and Outgoing servers! Where can I change them? In the Advanced mailbox settings there is only one setting - for the port number, but again not a thing about which are my ingoing and outgoing servers.
    Pls help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    thanks albyzas, thanks thetao.
I have the last version (3.21 I think) and I know where the in/out settings should be located, but here is no such thing under the "Advanced Mailbox Settings"! The only settings I have are the port number and the secure connection on/off. I have this problem since I bought the E72. Previously, I had E71 and it had the in/out settings there!
BTW the provider I use is listed automatically for my country, just below Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo (I don't have to click "Other")
    So I have some questions:
    2) Delete and remake the mailbox.  Don't use Nokia Messaging (their push service) by Declining the terms of service.  Maybe that provides more control?
If I decline them, what client will I be using then?
    3) Can you remove the email client?  I hesitate suggesting that because some people have reported being unable to reinstall...but you can try if you feel daring.
If I remove it, how can I reinstall it later?
    4) Do you recall when the problem started?  If it happened after a firmware update, a hard reset ( *#7370# , default password 12345) will sometimes fix weird issues that occur after installing new firmware.  Be sure to make a backup first.
The Problem started when my e-mail provider decided to change the numbers of their ports several months ago...

  • Where are my old faces after I migrated to Photo

Where are my "faces" when I moved to "photo" from iPhoto????

is the Faces album empty, or is the the Faces album missing?
You should be seeing the Faces album in the "Album" section of the sidebar.
To show the sidebar, press the key combination ⌥⌘S or use the View menu > Show Sidebar.
If the Album section is completely empty, hover the pointer to the right of "Albums" to reveal the hidden Show/Hide controls.
You can also see the Faces in the Info panel for each photo.

  • Where are my old apps? Not on new phone.

I tried transferring my 4s to my 5s with icloud and didn't move 90% of my apps. I tried it again backing up to the computer from 4s then restoring from computer to 5s, again 90% are missing, only the same few apps moved over besides the new ones that came with 5s.  Now if I look at either phone in itunes, all my apps are pictured on the right side (under apps) but nothing is listed on the left side where they all used to be listed. Same with the 5s, the few apps are listed on the right side but there is nothing listed under Apps on the left side.
Where are all the apps I bought--practically all where bought from the Apple app store. How can I get them and put them on my 5s? Is it because they aren't 64bit? I thought the 5s could handle both. I really need these apps.
    Help!

Thanks Steve for that quick response!  From other unrelated comments I've read, Apple never helps with password problems, always says, "We don't keep your passwords, so there's no way we can help you with passwords."  But since this is actually more related to PURCHASED-apps not appearing in iTunes, then maybe they would have a more helpful attitude regarding that.
However, the joke is on me, as I think I was taking gail-from-maine's sentence too literally where she wrote, "
Sign into iTunes with the Apple ID that you purchased the apps with."  She probably meant different family members might have different IDs/different phones, so make sure you're using the correct one for whichever phone.
Because I went ahead & used my CURRENT ID/PIN, & followed her directions so far, & yes, whew!, there are 222 apps showing in iTunes.  However, they ALL show the little cloud on them, which gail said means they are NOT on the Mac.  But they ARE on the Mac, under User > Music > iTunes > Mobile Applications.  So I'm cornfused.
I also notice that some of the apps (in the long list under Mobile Applications/Mac) show a "Creation Date" of 12/31/69 (!!) so I don't know how/why it says that as my clock/time/date is correct/current. Might that be causing a problem?  There appears to be no way to change that "Creation Date" in "Get Info."
Another question, what happened to the way you could move/re-arrange the location of the apps in iTunes according to screen/pages on the phone?  (with OSX Lion & iTunes 11.1.5, it simply shows all the apps in iTunes in 27 rows of 8 apps each row, but I see no way -- YET -- to rearrange them by different phone-screens/locations, the way it used to show them in older iTunes & you could move them around to where you wanted them to show up on your phone).
FWIW, I did try doing as gail-from-maine said, "Click on them [in iTunes] to download them [the ones with the clouds on them] to the Mac," (in the lower right of the iTunes page, it has the option/button to "Download ALL"), but it didn't do anything, just a quick blink like flutter/action on iTunes page & no indication that anything was downloading.
I'd rather have the copies that are already on the Mac under Mobile Applications put on the phone, since they are the ones with CONTENT in them through the last backup, right?  (I don't even know if the 222 apps showing in iTunes actually have any CONTENT in them???)
As you can tell, I'm not an experienced iTunes user, never cared for that software much.

  • Changed POP-account into IMAP: where are my old messages?

Few weeks ago, I created an IMAP-account (just bougt a MacBook).
Now it seems all POP-history has disappeared.
I named the IMAP-account, the same accountname as the POP-account before. I didnot backup or archive.
I checked ~/Library/Mail/, didnot find my old POP-folders, only new IMAP-folders.
I found the attats in the trash, but not the emlx's that were in my POP-folders. Are they hidden somewhere? Any way to restore these emlx's?
    Any suggestions very welcome.

    Hi BDAqua,
First, thanks for your quick reply. Had I been that fast...
I looked at the data-rescue software you recommended. It states that you don't have to be technical, however data recovery seems not my cup of tea. And then, me and my family used this Mac for another three weeks since, before I found out my old messages had disappeared. So if these files are not waiting in some folder, I guess it's a mess.
I think I'll take my loss of about one year of adresses, id's, passwords, confirmations etc. Luckely I found there was a lot of this saved in the attats and in keychain access as well.
Your remark about another HD made me realise that I'll need one anyway to backup my IMAP-boxes and keep out of things like this in future.
    Thanks

  • Where are the old Firefox releases?

As i have problems getting Pencil up and running with FF4 so i wnt to remove it and install FF3 again. FF4 is of no value for me at the moment when old plugins and extensions are not working anymore.
But the website is not presenting a link to the old versions? At least i can not find it...
Where can i find these old versions?

    Please do the following.
Go to [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html Download Firefox v3.6.17] and download it to the desktop.
Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to '''Mozilla Firefox '''and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
Then reboot and delete the folder called '''Mozilla Firefox''' at this location: ''C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox''
Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.
Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.
After you complete the installation, go to the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update those where necessary.

  • Where are my old spreadsheets?

I cannot find my old spreadsheets.  Are they stored somewhere?  Where did they go?

The following describes what is supposed to happen. It is from iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support which may have more information that will help.
What happened to the My Photo Stream and Camera Roll albums?
The Camera Roll and My Photo Stream album are replaced with an All Photos album, which gives you the same compact scroll view, now with all your photos and videos organized by the date they were added. Learn more about finding photos in iOS 8.
After you enable iCloud Photo Library, all your original photos and videos are organized in one library. My Photo Stream will upload recent photos to share with your other devices, but iCloud Photo Library stores your originals. See how to upload originals below.

  • Reinstalled OSX where are my old saved emails?

    Hello,
I've successfully reinstalled OSX. I imported my old mailboxes but they do not contain my saved emails in them. Where may I find them? Perhaps I impoted the boxes incorrectly?
    Thanks!
    yojames

Not sure what you mean. The imported mailboxes appear as subfolders of Inbox? They should appear within an Import folder below Inbox...
Did you choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format?
Can you still see the (empty) imported mailboxes in Mail after quitting Mail and opening it again? Can you create custom “On My Mac” mailboxes in Mail?

  • Where are Thunderbird e-mail files stored on my computer?

I have read the suggested articles and followed the instructions as best I can, but I still cannot figure out how to get to profile (the path revealed in "Troubleshooting Information," by clicking "show folder," was not what I found on my computer---one element in the supposed path, "AppData," simply was not there in the tree) unless I somehow missed a hidden clue. Furthermore, even if I manage to get to profile, I still don't comprehend how to move my e-mail files from there to a location on my computer that is easy to get to and to back up along with all my other data files.
Perhaps my level of knowledge is too modest here because the assumption is that I know more than I actually do know. If that is the case, I apologize, but that does not resolve the issue. I wonder why the folders containing e-mails are not placed in an obvious and handy location to begin with, but that of course is a different matter.
But right now, all I want to do is to (1) get to profile, (2) understand how to back up the actual profile (or profiles, if I ever have more than one, which I don't quite understand, either), and (3) comprehend how to separate out and move the e-mail files/folders located there to an easily accessible and obvious (to me) location. I would greatly appreciate some basic-level instruction on this.
(I might mention that because it did not meet my needs generally, and also because it was most inconveniently down periodically, otherwise difficult to use far too frequently, and administered with shockingly scant attention to customer satisfaction despite its full-bore commercial nature, I abandoned AT&T/Yahoo web mail for a computer-resident POP client. I chose Thunderbird on the recommendation of a knowledgeable friend. I had used Outlook with relatively good success quite some time ago but have a fundamental aversion to patronizing Microsoft when I do not absolutely have to do so. That is why I am trying with much energy to get Thunderbird to work for me with some reasonable degree of convenience and functionality.)
    Thank you.

    ''re: A folder-copy isn't easy to read,''
Only if you need to read a specific email as emails are not stored in separate .eml files. They are stored in mbox files which look like a long text document containing emails written one after the other in the order downloaded. But for backing up and reinstalling a Profle which contains all your data, it is stored exactly as required for reinstalling. It also stores all your preferences and account details and so on - eg: address books.
''re: if its not compressed it also includes all deleted files.''
What gnospen actually means is 'compacted' not compressed. They are two entirely different things which should not be confused. You can easily empty the Deleted and Junk folders and then compact all your folders before backing up. This resolves this if it is of a concern to you.
As gnospen says, ImportExportTools is an excellent tool for backing up emails - not your Profile, not your account settings and preferences and not your address books.
You can choose to use to store emails as separate .eml files or HTML or plain text format or as a single text file or pdf format or export the entire folder in mbox format with or with subfolders.
If you want to use ImportExportTools, Thunderbird needs to running, I would advise you go into Offline mode whilst backing up as you do not want your folders synchronising whilst performing this task.
Here is a link to ImportExporttools addon:
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/
I suppose what you need to determine is what do you want to backup.
I would advise, if you want all your prefernces, account settings, address books and emails saved in one go, then copy the Profile to create a backup or use MozBackup tool.
If you only want to backup emails then use ImportExportTools addon tool.
If not backing up your entire profile, but you do want to keep a backup of address books then you can go to Address Book and select the address book, then Tools > Export as either LDIF or comma separated .csv file.
Note: comma separated .csv files can be opened by other programs such as Excel and can also be easily imported into any email client or back into Thunderbird.
