Where are my thumbnail previews?

After upgrading my hard-drive (time machine restore) most of my thumbnail previews in Aperature 3 are gone.  Most but not all.  Also, many without the preview will render only in large format - but no thumbnail sticks after backing back out.  The photo's are there but no previews are shown.  I've tried "updating preview" to no avail.  Aperature CPU usage ramps up for a minute or two then fades away without completing the preview generation.  Any suggestions?

FYI.  It says my HD is offline so it can't update from the Master.  But the weird thing is only some of the files are effected by this.  Tell me I don't have to repoint Aperature to each file again.  I guess I could reimport the projects...
Since your Library and your file structure should be unchanged by the drive replacement, it should be simple work to reconnect any and all images with missing Masters to their Masters.
The next thing to test is your Aperture installation.
Create a new Library, populate it with a few dozen images.  Does it work as expected?
Can you open your Library on another computer (one with, of course, Aperture installed)?
Do you have any other back-ups of your Library?  Something seems to have gone badly wrong over the course of your drive replacement.

  • Where has the thumbnail preview gone?

I recently upgraded from CS5 to the latest version and I'm having trouble adjusting. One of the smallest but most usable features of previous versions of photoshop has been that when I go to File > open and browse to one of my thousands of image folders Photoshop will display a small thumbnail of whichever image I have selected.
This is essential so that I can tell which images I need rather than by file name which is useless.
I'm probably just being thick and just need to find where to switch on the thumbnail preview. Can anyone advise?

Windows on its' own does not provide thumbnail previews of psd files. A product I recommend without hesitation is Ardfrey PSD Codec.
    http://www.ardfry.com/psd-codec/
Windows 32 and 64 bit thumbnail support for these file formats:
Adobe Photoshop PSD PSB and Adobe PhotoDeluxe PDD files
EPS files with embedded screen representations and thumbnail medadata
    most Adobe Illustrator AI files
InDesign INDD files from CS2 and later that were saved with preview images
(New!) PDF files that were saved with XMP thumbnails.  Even broader support for PDF thumbnails is provided when Adobe Reader is installed.
The main reason I need this software is when I am using Windows Explorer to upload my screenshots,or open files in programs that do not use Bridge,as well as viewing my Explorer folders. It's great to have eyeball confirmation that the correct file is selected. It's worth the shekels.
Just  a few samples in Extra Large thumbnail view.

  • Where are the Aperture Previews?

I'm at a loss trying to work out why my Aperture preview pics are not coming up as available jpeg files in "Photos".  In other words, the files used by other apps such as Mail, iTunes, etc.  If I try to send an email and add a picture only a very outdated (and empty) iPhoto folder appears as an option.  What happened to the Aperture previews that worked just fine until I migrated to iCloud (may or may not be related but the problem started on the same day)?  I have the preview boxes checked in Aperture Preferences.  I have done all of the Aperture First Aid options such as rebuild and restore.  I have deleted and updated the previews using the instructions provided in the Aperture User Manual and still nothing.  I even rebuilt a new library using my externally saved backup vault.  Nothing works.  It's like, for lack of better wording, the computer refuses to share Aperture previews with any other application.  I can use Aperture itself just fine to import, edit, save files, I just cannot use the previews of them in Mail, Desktop, iTunes, etc.  When I do a generate previews the activity window shows all 7,000 previews being generated but where are they and why are they not available to other apps?
Also, even though the new iCloud Photostream is turned on and working just fine on my ATV2, iPad 1 and iPhone I cannot get it to work on my iMac.  I check the photostream box in System Pref/iCloud and Aperture but after a slight pause the box goes unchecked by itself.  All software has been confirmed the latest available.
I appreciate any suggestions as I am at a loss on what to do next other then a full Aperture reinstall which I really do not want to do from DVD and numerous online updates unless my only option.   Even with a vault backup I am still nervous of losing 7000 pics.   Even then I still need to use the vault to recreate a new library so if the problem is somehow hidden within the vault a reinstall likely would not help either (I believe).   If that is the case (a corrupted vault), what do I do then?
    Many Thanks
    Mark

All software has been confirmed the latest available.
    Mac OS X (10.6.3)
Is your signature correct, then? I'd recommend to upgrade to 10.6.8.
I check the photostream box in System Pref/iCloud and Aperture but after a slight pause the box goes unchecked by itself.
You seem to be using iPhoto and Aperture alternately. You can share your Photo Stream only with one of these Applications. Maybe this is causing the stream to automatically beeing switched off. This has been reported by others. Search for other threads with "photo stream turning off" in the iCloud Forum.
I have done all of the Aperture First Aid options such as rebuild and restore.  I have deleted and updated the previews using the instructions provided in the Aperture User Manual and still nothing.  I even rebuilt a new library using my externally saved backup vault.
Have you tried to remove your Aperture Preference file? This file tells the Media Browser where the Aperture Library is located. If you have not done so already:
    Quit Aperture
Open your user Library (inside your Home Folder) in the Finder and navigate to the "Preferences" folder.
Move your preferences file Library->Preferences-> com.apple.Aperture.plist to the desktop
Restart Aperture and direct it to your Aperture Library. Quit Aperture again.
Try to use the Media Browser from the System Preferences by setting your Desktop Picture.

  • Where are my MTS file thumbnails?

I usually use Sony Vegas pro to do my editing of video.  I often gave used the Elements Organizer to rename the cameras numbered clips to something more meaningful before I start.  I have opened all of my holiday pictures into Organized & I can see the thumbnails for all formats used on the holiday except for the .MTS 1920x1080.   I can see the thumbnails in all other programs like Windows Explorer to Sony Vegas.
Where are the thumbnails & how do I get them to display?
    Thanks in advance

You don't say which version of the Elements Organizer you're using or what operating system you're working on, but they can make a difference which files display thumbnails in the Organizer.
Also, you do want to ensure you have the latest version of Quicktime from Apple.
And there are some components that only become activated when you first use them in a Premiere Elements project. In other words, if you're doing all of your editing in Vegas, you're not giving Premiere Elements a chance to download the components necessary to display .mts files in the Organizer. Try starting a Premiere Elements project and adding the .mts file as the first clip on Video 1. This will trigger the program to download the .mts components.

  • Where are the preview images stored

When you launch iPhoto 8.1.2 and you can look at the preview of the photos in the main screen, Where are these file fragments located?
I have many original pictures that are deleted (yes they are gone and right now I dont care about that) but they still show up in the preview area of iPhoto.
This is a great thing for me since the originals have been deleted and I am trying to salvage whatever sanity I have left in these deleted photos.
I know the images for the previews are somewhere in this machine?  is it in a database file or something that needs a special tool to extract the thumbnails?
And yes I have already looked in all the folders inside of the 'show package contents' window.  So I am left to believe this is a hidden database preview structure since the photo is truly deleted but it shows up clear as day in the preview area of iPhoto.  But of course when you click on the photo you get the big "EXCLAMATION POINT" telling you the photo is gone.  Yes I know the photo is gone.
I just want to know where the preview images are stored so I can recover them..  (even if it is the lowest quality and only a few kb in size) its better than nothing as far as I am concerned.
    Thanks

They are in the Data folder within the Library Package.

  • TS3991 where are documents saved in preview?

Where are PDF documents saved to icloud in Preview? Either on icloud.com or on any ios Device?  Honestly, where do they go?

This is configurable... We can store the documents at file level other wise inside Database also.

  • Standard and 1:1 preview where are they saved?

    Hi,
I searched the forum but I could not find where the standard size and 1:1 preview are saved. Do you know where they are stored?
I just need to get an idea of how much space a single 1:1 preview takes up on my disk to allocate the cache.
    Thanks

They are in the Previews folder, which lives at the same level folder as the catalog, .lrcat.
The cache is a separate matter.

  • My thumbnail previews are all horizontal in bridge

All of my thumbnail previews are horizontal in bridge - this is a new problem.  I'm using CS5.  Previously they were previewing just fine.  If I go through each folder and reapply my metadata, the previews correct themselves, but I shouldn't have to do this every time I use bridge.  I've searched through preferences and can't find a solution.  Any ideas?

I don't really know anything about cache management in Bridge.
Let it be some comfort to you that almost everybody (including me) can say the same...
Maybe I'm just using it much more than I used to.
That should not matter but unfortunately it seems related. Compared to Tai Lao I seem to have very clean work because I don't need to wash my hands that often but it is a fact that Cache is still not easy to manage.
Luckily each new version seems to handle cache in a better way but I have to admit that every now and then I also start with a fresh empty cache folder to avoid problems. In CS3 this was about every 4 to 6 weeks but in CS5 I only do it a few times a year depending on the size the cache file has grown.
I use cache a lot and mostly the size of my cache file is 25 GB +. Every now and then I use Compact Cache. Just tried it again and the current 43 GB size was reduced to 29 GB but that is still a lot of space. Hence some 'spring cleaning' every now and then.

  • Where are the official microsoft ISO's for windows 10 preview?

    Hi All,
Where are the official Microsoft ISO's for Windows 10,  10051 and 10056 preview?   They are all over the web, but I don't trust them unless they comes from Microsoft itself.
    Many thanks,
    -T

    To ToddAndMargo,
RE : Is there a way to manually go to Windows Updates and manually download a particular file
No. All updates will be downloaded and installed automatically. You don't get to choose which to install and which to decline.
RE : And I can't find 10049's ISO either (from Microsoft).
As of now, the only most current ISO available is for build 10041. Build 10049 ISO is not yet available.
When build 10049 is released from Slow ring, usually it is also the time its ISO will be released.
    RE: ESD file. How?
One cannot download an esd file of build 10049 from Windows Update.
You download and install the entire build 10049 via Windows Update. When it is done, you can then find its Installed.esd file from RecoveryImage folder and use it to manually create an ISO fie. You will need a specific program to create an ISO from Esd.
You might ask " why do I need an ISO fie if the operating system is already installed ?"
Some users are advocates of "clean install". They prefer clean install over upgrade install. Clean install can be done by burning the ISO file into a bootable DVD or an USB with at least 4 GB capacity and use it to install.
You can also use the same media and install in another compatible computer.
It can also serve as an emergency backup incase you need to reinstall.

  • HT2506 Where are signatures created in Preview stored?

Where are signatures created in Preview stored?

The Preview signature file is a .plist file found in the User Library>Containers>com.apple.Preview>Data>Library>Preferences.
If you want to move a signature from one computer to another there is a very useful guide at:
    http://www.stuartcarnie.com/2011/08/transferring-preview-app-signatures-in.html
In Stu's guide you can see that the file is encrypted in the Mac Keychain so you have to do some manipulation to copy the signatures.

  • Thumbnail Preview for RAW Files Not Appearing in Bridge

    Hello,
I'm running Adobe Bridge 5.1 on a Mac OS 10.9.2 (recently upgraded to Maverick) and I can no longer see thumbnail previews for my RAW files (which include .NEF, .CR2 and .RAF) though as of a few days ago this wasn't a problem. Not sure if it's related to the Maverick upgrade... but FYI, I do see thumbnail previews for .TIFF and .JPEG files.
I've already purged my cache generally and have also as a test chosen a local file to purge - that didn't work.
I've restarted Bridge at least 2x by pressing and holding the Option key.
I've also checked for Bridge updates - everything is up to date.
My Cache Options (within Preferences) are set to "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" and "Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible" - both checked.
Also downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter 8.3, installed it but that didn't work.
I can't seem to find my Bridge cache folder or at least what's in the Library's "Caches" folder doesn't include anything for Bridge - see screenshot below.
Please help! Thank you in advance.

To me it seems related to your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) converter. Clue inhere is you only miss the Raw files and have no problems in seeing other formats like jpeg and tiff.
The screenshot you delivered is from the wrong library, however, this same library (the one on system level) also is the location where you should be able to view the correct version of your ACR plugin. The path: library (same as per your screenshot)/Application support/ Adobe/ Plug ins/ CS6/ File Formats. inhere should be only one version of Camera Raw (called: "Camera Raw.plugin") and this should show version 8.3 (141).
I'm not sure about your bridge version number, Bridge 5 comes with PSCS6 but my most recent version of Bridge is 5.0.2.4.
Anyway, if you have only one ACR (8.3) installed in the above mentioned path then you might want to try to delete the Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manually.
For this you have to Quit Bridge and find the user library (by default hidden, use menu Go in Finder and press option key to reveal).
Inhere find the plist file (user(your user name) / library / Preferences  and inhere find and manually delete the file called: "com.adobe.bridge5.plist"
The in same user library find Bridge Cache. User/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6. Inhere are 2 files, the adobe Bridge plug in cache and the folder called Cache. delete (or move outside libray) both items.
The restart Bridge (If needed also again hold option key to reset preferences) and this will create fresh files for the previous deleted items, leaving you with an almost out of the box factory set version of Bridge.

  • Where Are My Missing Master Images?

I keep my Aperture Library as a "managed" library rather than "referenced, so every master image is kept inside the Aperture Library icon.
Today I decided to look inside my Aperture Library (by selecting Show Package Contents), and I can only find master images from the past five years. The "Master" folder contains folders for projects I've titled 2012, 2011, and back to 2008. None of the earlier images that I keep in Aperture, 2007 through 2003, appear in the "Master" folder in the Aperture Library, and there are no folders for 2007 and earlier.
    That is, if I look in Aperture Library -> Master -> I see folders for 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008. But that's it!
There are also no folders inside Preview for those earlier years, or inside Thumbnails.
    And yet...
And yet when I'm in the Aperture application, I can Export any of the images, all the way back to 2003. So the master images are obviously available to Aperture somewhere. They exist. And I checked -- those earlier missing images not Referenced, they're Managed, just like the whole library.
    So where are they??
I dug through other folders inside the Aperture Library package but didn't find a thing.
    Help!

But I'm digging around inside the package and still puzzled -- images inside the folder Aperture Library.aplibrary -> Masters -> 2009 -> 06 -> 14 -> 20090614-214439/ were indeed shot on June 14, 2009. So it appears that those various level folder names reflect image creation date, not the import date.
    Joe,
these various level folder names reflect what Aperture thinks are the import dates.
The "Import Session" is one of the Aperture specific Metadata tags. You can display it in the Info/Metadata pane of the Inspector Panel, if you add it to one of the presets, and then you'll know, where to search, if you absolutely must to sleep well .
You can also use this tag to search or to define a smart album. For example, the image below has been captured in 2003, but was imported in 2010, and will be found in a 2010 folder.

  • Thumbnails & Preview filenames do not match Master filename

Hi - can't find any threads regarding this...
Basic problem is that Aperture is not renaming the Preview & Thumbnail filenames when it renames images on import - anyone else experiencing this problem?
I have a managed Aperture Library (2.1.3). I rename my image files on import using the Import dialogue set to Custom Name & Counter and Apply to Master filename checked. However the Preview file, the Thumbnail file and the Finder folder holding the images do not get renamed.
Since the Media Browser uses the Preview files rather than the Master files when importing images into other apps (eg. Pages or uploading to a blog) the files used all have the wrong names.
    For Instance:
I have a canon image file named IMG1234.JPG.
I import this file to Aperture and use the import dialogue to rename to Custom Name SUNSETNEVADA.JPG (with apply to Master Filename checked).
In Aperture what I see in my project is SUNSETNEVADA.JPG as the Version Name and the Master filename - as expected.
However the Thumbnail & Preview files are still called IMG1234.JPG - you can't see this directly from within Aperture you need to open Finder and drill down thru the Library package where you find that your Master file is called SUNSETNEVADA.JPG but it lives in a folder called IMG1234.JPG with a Thumbnail file called IMG1234.JPG and a Preview file called IMG1234.JPG.
I then open Pages and open the Media Browser.
I select Photos, and then my Aperture library, find my project and select SUNSETNEVADA.JPG.
The file that gets imported into Pages is the preview file called IMG1234.JPG.
The same happens in any situation where I use the Media Browser to browse the Apertuer library and import images, because the Media Browser always uses the Preview file.
The only work around I have is to export images directly from Aperture and then browse the Finder to import them to other apps - avoiding the Media Browser and Preview files altogether.
I have notified Apple Pro Support who claimed to be unaware of this error.
If you have seen the same problem please notify Apple Support.
Any thoughts or solutions welcome. Thanks

I am seeing the same thing, as I have lost all my masters and can only get my pics by copying preview files, which all have the old names.

  • Upgrade to 2013 leaves "Images" library without Thumbnail Preview working

The issue I am seeing is occurring after an update from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013. The library is a publishing library created in 2010. These features are enabled in 2013. Looking at the "Thumbnail Preview" column in any view shows the
generic sheet of paper icon. Viewing the images in the "Thumbnail" view shows the thumbnails correctly. The images for the list in question are all .gif. As far as I know those are the only ones failing, but we could have missed some other filetypes.
I've tried moving a document to a newly created Images library and the preview shows as expected. So I believe I've pretty easily demonstrated that the actual image is not a problem and that SharePoint 2013 can render it. However, it's not a workable solution
    to move these files.
If I open the library with Fiddler, I get a 404 error for 256_icgif.gif. From there it's been sort of a dead end as I wouldn't know where to test and see if that's part of the issue.
This is our dev environment before upgrading to 2013 so we're looking for a fix we can perform during or before the upgrade.
    Thanks!

    Hi Christopher,
Casting my mind back to the Beta, I hit something similar during a test upgrade and if I remember rightly it was to do with the content type mappings that came across. There are two content types Picture and Image which behave differently, so try swapping
the available content types in the library and changing that.

  • Thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer (Windows 7 64bit)

Is there a way to enable thumbnail previews under Windows Explorer for Acrobat X Pro? I just installed the trial and these are missing.
I know there was a bug in Acrobat 9 which required a third party hack to fix. I had hoped by now this would work correctly. Has this still not been fixed?
    Thanks.

Lol.  Adobe has known about this stupid problem for about 4 years.  Since Vista x64 started gaining popularity.  Acrobat 8.x was the first version where people really started scratching their heads wondering why & when the problem would be fixed.  Then came Acrobat 9.   And now "X".  Still not fixed, well, I'm sure next year we'll have Acrobat 11, so keep holding your breath.
