Where are my USB ports?

Hello:
I have four USB ports, all of which work under Windows.  What are the device names in Arch Linux?  I am looking at the directory of /dev and I see nothing with a USB prefix, nor with a SCSI prefix (I vaguely recall some distros putting USB under SCSI)
Not that I understand what I am looking at, but the KDE FSTab tool shows four USB in /proc/bus.
Thank you

You need to plug something in to have for example /dev/sda1, don't you (they are created dynamically) ? :-)
Nexist, what do you want to know ? If you are using udev look in /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules to know what is where in /dev.
If you just want to know if your usb ports are recognized and working browse dmesg output. It should print something about usb ports when you load your usb module (at least one of the ehci_hcd, uhci_hcd, ohci_hcd). For example:
ehci_hcd 0000:02:05.2: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0
ehci_hcd 0000:02:05.2: irq 5, pci mem 0xde002000
ehci_hcd 0000:02:05.2: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
ehci_hcd 0000:02:05.2: USB 2.0 initialized, EHCI 0.95, driver 10 Dec 2004
hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found
hub 1-0:1.0: 4 ports detected
I have to run to my parents house, but I have no SDA devices, even with my iomega SuperDVD plugged in, nor does one appear when I plug in the Palm Pilot.  However, I am using a USB mouse just fine -- and yet there is no SDA device for that either.
How do I check the dmesg log.  Also, I just thought of something when I boot up there is an error loading the Hot Plug module.  If these are created dynamically, that module might be responsible for that....

    Hi Moth!
I am only in my 69th year but I also find groping about behind PCs with the spiders a PITA!
So,  buy a USB hub. I have several. One of the best is called "Masterplug" it clamps on the back of your desk and has 4 USB ports, a 13A power socket, RJ45, RJ11 and headphone jack on the front. Bad news is I can't find another one!
However, some kit won't work on hubs so buy some 1mtr USB extension leads, buy the best quality you can. Plug those in and bring them out to the front of the machine.

  • What standards are  the USB ports on a Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5?

What standards are the USB ports on a Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5? USB1 or USB2? If USB1, is there a card to equip the computer for USB2 or USB3?

USB 2.0. USB 3.0 is not yet supported in OS X. You can purchase USB 3.0 cards for Macs, but I don't know if they work in your slots. See www.caldigit.com, for example.

  • Where are the USB drivers for my MSI board??

Got a new MSI board- VIA KM266 Pro + 8237 Chipset Based. I installed my new AMD 2300+, WIN XP, etc. I have a USB printer. Got everything installed, printed a test page, and then a document. Everything fine. THEN, I go to use my printer a few days later and it says "Printer not responding". So I troubleshoot, and then go into Device Manager and notice there are no USB devices installed. The new MSI board has 4 USB ports on it. The CD that came with the board has no USB drivers on it (I checked). WIN XP has no USB drivers. What is going on? How do I get the USB ports to work? Am I looking at it all wrong? Appreciate any help out there!

  • Why are my USB ports are working, but not providing power?

I just got a brand new 15" Macbook Pro and the USB ports appear to be working fine for items that don't require power, but I plugged my Avid Mbox into it and the power light on the Mbox flashes, indicating it is not getting enough power.  The Mbox works fine on my other Macbook Pro (2010 model) and it works on my Imac, but not the new Macbook.  I have a powered hard drive that works fine on the new Macbook, so the USB port is not dead, but just seems to not be supplying power properly for this device that needs it.  I don't have another item which uses the power like this to test, but I wonder if anyone has any idea if this is simply faulty hardware and if there is a conclusive way to test.  As it's literally two days old, I would exchange it if it really isn't working properly.  Only difference between this new Mac and the others is that it's running Lion and the others are running Snow Leopard.

If you have an iPhone or iPod that can be charged by the USB port, then the problem lies with the Mbox and/or the cable attaching it.  If you google the problem (and I hope you did, because there are tons of posts at the various Mac websites about troubles with the Mbox and the MacBook Pro), you'll see people either plug and play with no issues, or they spend a lot of time doing so.  It sounds like you're the latter.
Anyways, if an iPhone or iPod (or anything else that requires USB power to run) doesn't work, then the issue is your MBP.

  • Netbook NB305 - Are the USB ports fully powered?

I'm wondering if the USB ports on the NB305 supply enough power to power an external 2.5" hard drive.
    Thanks very much!

It can depend on the external drive.  A friend of mine and I bought our WDC Passports at the same time from the same store and mine works just fine on every laptop we have tried it on and his exact same model (the serial numbers are only about 100 apart) has troubles powering up on some of the same laptops mine runs fine on.  If it doesn't you can normally use a dual usb cable like this one to draw power from two ports to get it going.

If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • What are the usb ports for

Why does atv have usb ports does it suport an external hard drive? If not what are they on the unit for. Thanks

The USB port is for servicing and maintenance only.

  • Are those USB port hubs safe to use?

I bought one of those Belkin USB 4 port Hubs so that I can have more USB ports on my iMac.
I have the one that needs external power.
I was curious as to wether they can cause any damage to my iMac's ports? Here I am using 4 ports on this hub which is connected to a port on the iMac that is designed for 1 device right? Not 4 devices.
So can using 4 devices via a hub connected to a USB port designed to have 1 device to it, cause any damage to the ports?
Also - what about data corruption?
If I have 4 drives connected to the USB Hub, transferring files between them and to the computer, could this cause data to become corrupt?
So far I've had no problems but I use these USB ports to transfer large amounts of iimpotant data and cant afford anything going wrong..
    -Frank

It is perfectly safe (and encouraged by Apple) to use USB hubs. In fact, USB will support up to 127 peripherals chained together over one USB port. The only concern may be if a hub loses power in the middle of a file transfer, or gets disconnected. But that is the same for everything.
I have used USB hubs for many years without any problems.

I can't use a normal gamepad or a mouse because it keeps disconnecting/connecting after random times, and I can't use them.

  • 6025E Register Map: where are the 82C55 Ports?

    Hi,
I have written a driver for 6024E, and now would like to add support for the additional I/O ports available on 6025E. However, I can't seem to figure out the address to access these ports, and don't see any reference to these within the DDK files.
Any help would be appreciated -- thanks!

ok, I finally found this in comedi driver source:
    #define Port_A 0x19
    #define Port_B 0x1b
    #define Port_C 0x1d
    #define Configuration 0x1f
It must be in the NI docs somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it.

  • Where do I find the USB port interfaces?

Which of the elements in the /dev folder are the USB ports? Mine contains to many to post.

I'm sorry, maybe I didn't ask the correct question. I have a library that looks for the USB ports to do communication, Serialio and Java to be specific. I need to use the USB interfaces, which are usually found in /dev correct? And before anyone tells me to go to SerialIO's forums, I'm working on that as well. It seems that the library isn't finding the ports.

    Things I've done thus far:
    All Windows Updates
    All Lenovo Updates
BIOS Update, reset to defaults, ensured USB is not disabled
Manually deleted all USB devices, rebooted, Scanned for hardware changes
Manually deleted the 2 Unknown devices, Scanned for changes
Worked with Lenovo phone/remote support (they really had no idea where to start)
OS is Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
    Thank you in advance!

As you are experiencing USB ports are not responding. I would suggest you to please uninstall the USB drivers from the Device Manager and then restart the system.
After that please visit the mentioned below web link and install the chipset driver.
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83ra28ww.exe
Now, please restart the system and check if the issue resolved.

  • Can't use front USB port for external Hard Drive

I have had some problems for about the past year with the front USB port on my 2009 13in Macbook Pro 5.5.
As you know, there are 2 USB ports on the left side on a 13inch Macbook pro.  The one closest to me (the front one) works fine when I use it with a flash drive.  But when I connect my external 7200RPM external drive to it, after about a minute, it ejects then re-recognizes the disk.
I video edit with FCP and use the external as one of my scratch disks.
At first I thought maybe it was the cord or the drive that was messed up.  But then I connected my other external drive to this port and the same thing happened.
But when I connected it to the back USB port, everything works fine. I haven't had any trouble.  So i make sure it's connected to that port when using the external.
Why would this be happening.  It only screws up when using a standard external drive but not flash drives or any other peripherals.
    Thanks
    Brandon

    Exactly what Ogelthorpe mentioned.
I bought a Seagate 500GB 7200RPM and bought an external case from Staples that has a big fancy led to show HD activity.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Tested it on my PC and it works all the time so it got me stumped.  Thought it was my MB.
Decided to try another external drive drive on my MB and everything works.  So I returned the fancy external enclosure and bought the simple $10 one.
    Now everything works fine.
Maybe changing your external case might help you.
