Where are OS X log files?

To keep a long story short, I wanted to check what time I put the computer to sleep last night. There are a lot of log files used by the OS, does anyone know a good list of the logs and their paths?
As much as I'm asking about a specific file right now, it's easier if there's a list I can check rather than always ask here.
Thanks.

brad,
The log files can easily be located with your Console Application, which is located in your Utilities Folder.
Open Console, and then click on Logs or Console>File>New Log Window.

Where are the log files for Adobe Reader?
When one of our clients opens a form off our liquid office server we receive an error.  If possible I would like to find a log file that might give some sort of clue as to why this is happening.  Thanks

I'll make an inquiry about that and if we have to contact liquid office at some point my guess is they may request that we do that if there is likely to be any useful information there.  It is likely going to be pretty difficult as we have lots of clients opening forms constantly throughout the day.
I did find adobearm log file and also adobereaerbroker log file in the temp files on my own.  So it does seem like reader logs some of it's activities.  I haven't examined them completely yet but a quick comparison between a working machine opening our problem form and the one the computer that doesn't open it properly seems to show no obvious differences.  They both seem to show problems with access denied and registry entries.  However one works and the other doesn't even with the same issues in the log.

  • Where are the Adapter Log Files?

    Hello All,
I have an message that just isn't being loaded by the receiving business system and I'd like to examine the receivers log files for additional details to help me debug the problem.  I don't know where to look yet.  Perhaps the group can offer it's collective advice.
Here's the details of the problem I'm tackling.....
I have a 3rd party system that's trying to send a purchase requisition to an SAP Business System via XI.  The message is received by XI correctly.  XI correctly performs the transformation and identifies the message interface and selects correct receiver for the message.  XI communicates with the receiving business system via the appropriate communication channel.
The message "fails" in the receiving system with the following error:
HTTP server code 500 reason Internal Server Exception explanation Error parsing of SOAP header.
That's not particularly enlighting?  What exactly about the SOAP header didn't the receiving system like?  Perhaps if I could examine a log file on the receiving system, I could figure out what was preventing the message from being loaded.
A review of TCode SM21 and ST22 on the receiving system - show no errors
The message is being sent to an HTTP receiver channel on an SAP Business System.  The URL being posted to looks something like this: http://host:port/sap/xi/engine?type=receiver
That's the URL for the local integration engine's pipeline on the receiving SAP business system, right?  SXMB_MONI on the receiving system doesn't show an errors because the SOAP header could not be interpreted.  What other log files would I examine on the receiver system to see an error in message parsing?
Thanks for your help!  Points will be gladly awarded

    Hi,
You can look into the Message Display Tool.
    <b>http://server:javaport/MessagingSystem/monitor/montior.jsp</b>
This link will lead you to see the entire SOAP message that is actually sent out of XI and received by XI . You can also see the Adapter Log on this link.

  • Where are these unix executable files coming from and how do I recover the original text file?

where are these unix executable files coming from and how do I recover the original text file?

When you upgraded to Lion did you have AppleWorks installed on your mac?
Most of the AW documents can be opened by Pages 09 or Numbers 09 with most of the orginal format in tact. (I do not know if previouse verision will work) just open the AW file with both and see which one works best.
Text Edit will also open most of the AW files as well but will require a lot of work to restore them to their orginal format.
If you have AW Database documents then they are not supported.
These document show up as "exec icons", Kind: Unix Executagle File.
They also will show up as .cwk file if they are small files. I have a couple that were under 1mb that are shown as " Kind: AppleWorks Document" but will not open.
The only option to open AW database is to have AW installed on a mac with a pre-Lion OS to recover the file.

  • Just where ARE the site definition files?

I've just received CS4.  I want to move it to my more powerful laptop when I install it.  I know how to do that and I can move site files, but where are the site definition files?  I really don't want to have to set up each site from scratch.  Is there one (or more) files that are the name, url, location, id, password etc for each of the (many) sites in CS3?
    don Carlos

To import/export site definitions (not site files):
    On the old computer:
    Site > Manage Sites
Shift click to highlight all site names
    Export..
Same procedure on new computer then Import..

    Hi,
I believe the folder is still in the same place, but it seems that the Home/Library folder is hidden (i.e. you cannot see a Library folder at all it if you go to Home). At least I can't
Try a search in Finder. Search for "mail" under "Library" (and select Kind > Folder). This should bring up a list of results from which you can get to the Mail folder. Hope that helps!

  • Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits?

Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits? Using iMac, OS X, most recent Aperture and Lightroom 5.7 with plugin for Aperture.

    Define "the Aperture files".
    Read this concise guide.
The files you imported into an Aperture Library can be exported (at any time, and repeatedly) using the command "File ▹ Export ▹ Originals".  Your Originals are never altered.  What went in is what comes out.
Adjustments and changes to the metadata that you made since creating an Image in Aperture by importing a file are saved to a text file.  This file is combined, on-the-fly, with the Original to create the Image that you see in Aperture.  There is no file saved to disk that is the full-size Image.  Thumbnails are saved, and Previews are saved.  These are JPG files, almost always smaller than the Original.  They are not substitutes for the Image for the use you have.
When you need a file of an Image to use in another program, you export the Image from Aperture.  "Export" means "Make me a file of this Image according to these file specs I'm providing".  The way to get files of your adjusted Images is simple:  create them by exporting.  Specify "Original size", and use a loss-less image-file format (e.g. TIFF 16-bit) if you want to retain as much visual information as possible.
Search the Web for information about transitioning from Aperture to Lightroom.  Note that I say "transitioning".  You cannot move a database from one format to another without significant changes, and likely some loss of information.  Adobe provides a tool and some instructions.  I strongly recommend working out the process step-by-step, and then proceeding with first a few Images, then a bushel-ful, and stopping to use the first few, the the bushel-ful, before committing your entire collection to the process.
As always, never use any computer file without having a back-up.
We have seen mixed reports here of the success of the LR tool that creates a LR database from your Aperture database.
If you want to carefully define the process, and test and refine it, use the excellent process-development, analysis, and execution program inShort.
Sadly, there is not and can never be a good, thorough re-positioning of the digital assets in your Aperture Library to become digital assets in a LR database.  Just as a metaphor for any user contemplating transitioning to another digital asset manager:  that would be like digging up a house in one country, planting it in a hole in another country, and expecting to be able to use the toilet and the sinks, turn on the lights, cook dinner, and sleep soundly.
    HTH,
    Kirby.

  • Where to look for log files & crash reports to help debug lockups?

Where would I look for possible log files or crash information that may provide clues on what the problem is?
Three or four times in the past few days my system has became unresponsive requiring a power-cycle. The little prism-colored round-cursor appears. I can drag windows about with my BlueTooth mouse (but not the trackpad) and that's about. The Function keys are not responsive. Other times the UI may becomes totally unresponsive.
A couple of weeks ago I Carbon Copy cloned my hard drive to a new 500GB Hitachi 7200 RPM ( I have 200GB free space now ). Before upgrading, I do not recall having had this problem. It usually occurs when I am running a Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 VM under Parallels. Parallels may have nothing to do with it as that's what I do all day ( develop Linux software in a VM ).
    I have a MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz, OS X 10.6.3.
Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions,

This is a Mac OS X issue. I am not using Boot Camp or otherwise dual-booting. I am running Linux in a virtual machine under a Parallels Mac OS X host; in effect running Linux as an application under OS X.
Unfortunately I did not see any clues in either log file location. Thank you very much for explaining where to look. I ran Disk Utility and repaired a bunch of permissions. Perhaps I should have done this before and after making the Carbon Copy clone.

  • Where are the archived log?

I've set my server to archive mail logs every 7 days, but I cannot find where they are archived. I do not see anything other than the normal complement of log files in /var/log. Yes it has been more than a week. But where do they go and what are they called?

It appears that you're assuming rather more around the word "archive" than exists here.
The archives that you seek are (also) stored in the /var/log directory.
The log files use the extension .log, and the log archive files use extensions such as .bz2 or .gz, and the associated data compression schemes.
    The following shell command:
$ sudo find / -name ipfw -print
will show you all files with the substring ipfw in the filename. Which will show you a few files here and there on your disk that are related to the firewall, including the man pages, and the /var/log directory.
    But no secret archives.
Run some tests with the archive settings over a week or two, and watch what happens in the /var/log directory.

  • Where to see the log files of runtime

For my installation, the locations mentioned in the documentation here http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13154_01/bpm/docs65/admin_guide/index.html?t=modules/logging/c_Head_Logging.html does not contain any log files. Where can i find more information about finding log files and also more importantly how can I log from the BPM process. Is there an out of the box log activity available in BPM. I could not find anything in the documentation.

Go to this link: Re: log Message in Studio
Paragraph number 4 shows how to find the actual log file.

  • Where to keep the log file and the mdf/ndf

    Hi ,
While going through the book of Kalen Delaney "inside sql server"  I got statement  "A general recommendation is to put log files onto their own physical disk. Here I am bit confuse that we have to keep log file in same hard
disk separate derive or in separate hard disk itself. On My DB server has only one hard disk, with three logical partition, so if I keep my log file MDF on different derives will I get the performance.
    Thanks in advance for reply........
    Regards Vikas Pathak

    @sateesh : but as per link "http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb402876.aspx"
This rule checks whether data and log files are placed on separate logical drives. Placing both data and log files on the same device can cause contention for that device and result in poor performance. Placing the files on separate drives allows the I/O activity
to occur at the same time for both the data and log files.
This is probably as this is the best they can do. Checking that the logical drives are actually two different physical disks is little out of scope from what you can do in SQL Server.
It is also worth pointing that the rule specifically refers to spinning disks. SSD disks do not have this problem.
