Where are Safari 1.x bookmarks, I need to backup bad system in FW Disk Mode

My friend has a PowerBook G4 with a pretty corrupt OS 10.3 on it. I'm praying I'll be able to get it started in FireWire Target Disk Mode so I can backup files, then I'll re-install the OS.
Where would I find Safari 1.x bookmarks? Can I just copy a file to backup the bookmarks and possibly later restore them?
(I'm a tech-y person so feel free to give me complicated instructions, I'll probably understand them)

Hi Jason,
You can find the Bookmarks in the following location.
Home_Folder>Library>Safari Folder>Bookmarks.plist
You can put it on a USB stick or when it is still possible to sent the file in a folder to a e-mail address, for instance your e-mail. Later when everything is working well again you can sent it back to your friend an swap the Bookmarks.plist file with the one that is in the NEW installed system.
Good luck ...

  • Are Stickies in StickiesDatabase? I need to backup bad system in Disk Mode

Are the Stickies kept in ~/Library/StickiesDatabase ? If I just copy that file would that allow me to later restore if necessary?

    Jason:
Have you tried repairing the installation on the PB? That is usually the least intrusive and safest option.
If you are able to boot into Firewire Target Disk Mode you can use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make a compressed disk image of the entire Users Folder you can later restore. Then you can do an Archive and Install and still have everything intact.
And, yes, "Stickies kept in ~/Library/StickiesDatabase".

  • Where are my backed up bookmarks on my external drive?

    Firefox backup issue:
This is concerning restoring my Bookmarks after having to replace my laptop PC. For the past several years I’ve been backing up my laptop to an external hard drive. I’ve always included the User subdirectory in that backup. The User/Dave/Appdata/Local/Mozilla/Firefox/Profile s/d is included. Today I needed to restore bookmarks from a prior backup in April, 2012 after reading the Firefox help on this subject, I accessed my external drive and looked in the s/d mentioned above. However when I clicked on the “wp83jzms.default” file, instead of seeing a list of backup dates from which to choose, I only saw files with “Cache” and “unclassifier” in the file name. Where are the backed up bookmarks from that date?
I also noticed that a different backup had stopped capturing files part way into the Local s/d so that the Mozilla s/d was not written to backup. Wonder what’s up there?
    I’m using Windows 7 and Firefox 13.0.1

That is the wrong profile folder and only stores the cache files.
You need the profile folder part in AppData\Roaming to get the main profile folder files.

  • Where are Safari Bookmarks Saved for Restore?

I need to backup and reinstall MAC OS X but I have no idea where all my bookmarks from Safari are stored so I can be sure I don't lose them.
    Thank You
    Patrick

    Hello patrick:
In answer to your question, I "think" they are in your home folder (~library>safari.... bookmarks.plist). However, I have never tested that premise.
If I were you, I would do an archive and install:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
An A&I will install a fresh OS X while preserving your files, programs, and settings. A backup of everything is always a good idea before any software changes.
IMHO, there is almost NO reason to do an erase and install.

  • Where are safari bookmarks stored

need to locate  where in the system Safari stores the bookmarks file.

You're right, AndyBall, I'd forgotten that one... Though plist files aren't easy to decrypt, and usually need Xcode installed to edit, this is where bookmarks settings are stored.
Antonio, most of what you want to do with your bookmarks (edit names, URLs, delete them, etc...) can be done directly from Safari. What do you need to do with your bookmarks, exactly?

  • Where are my interfaces and bookmarks which are missing?

My cat walked over my laptop. After this there was a screen with a box and qus, cannot remember what it asked but I kept pressing cancel. Then my two profiles disappeared. Cannot find profiles in program files but maybe do not know right name. Not in temp files and not in wastebasket. Very little action for this date which is mar 04 2012. I have an IBM t40 w/windows xp, sp 3. Can my profiles and esp bookmarks be restored?

Hi Malach01, <br/>You may be interested in this article:
** it may help you in starting an existing profile that is not listed in profile manger
**it also explains one way a profile may be created unintentionally
Did you find and backup your profiles ? <br/> Both of them ?
My original post only explained how to find a profile that is in use. Another method of finding profiles is to search for them, using XPs search option. All Firefox profiles will contain a database file called ''places.sqlite'' so search for that. (It contains the working bookmarks so it is one file you may wish to backup).
I am trying to make sure you have ALL the profiles backed up before you proceed. There are several potential pitfalls
    * bookmarks normally overwrite existing ones when you restore them <br/> but HTML bookmarks may be exported and when imported will append
    * Do NOT rename profiles <br/>it is often unwise to rename profiles because the folder does not rename to match the new profile name, and that may lead to confusion.
    * take care if ever deleting a profile. <br/>Profiles should be created in their own empty folder, deleting profiles destroys the folder, and any other content of that folder is also lost
    * Do NOT use options from Windows or Firefox to remove personal data, <br/>that is likely to remove all profiles from all versions of Firefox installed. You will loose settings, bookmarks, and passwords.
Cannot find profiles in program files
That is not where they live! There are separate paths for the installation and program files (includes firefox.exe) and the profile files (includes bookmarks and bookmark backups).
    * see also [[profiles]]
You could also search for files ending '''''.json''''' they will be bookmark backups created automatically by Firefox,or when you exported bookmarks.

  • Where can I find my bookmarks so I can backup on DVD in case of a crash

    Hello
I already had one HD crash and although I did manage to resurrect all my stuff that wasn't backed up I would like to prepare myself in case it happens again.
Does anyone know where I can locate my current Bookmarked pages so I can back them up onto a DVD in case of a future crash?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello anna:
Incidentally, running back level software (OS X 10.5.1 instead of OS X 10.5.8) is, IMHO, a prescription for future problems.
Actually, my first post pointed you to the bookmark file. However, that is probably irrelevant as we are, I think, at a different point. By the by, you are far more "techie" than I as I would not have ever tried to replace a HD.
I think your objective is to get your external configuration transferred to your internal HD on your eMac (things would run somewhat faster for you, I think). If that is correct, let me suggest an approach. You first will need a backup of your system (the one that you run from on your external HD). I suggest that you make two different backups (as I outlined above). I am assuming through all this you are booted from your external HD - the one with your system.
    1. I recommend you get SuperDuper ($28 US at www.shirt-pocket.com).
    2. Attach your second external HD (lets call it HD #2) to your eMac and partition it into two partitions using disk utility (one somewhat larger than your internal eMac HD, the other one with the rest of the space.
    3. Open Time Machine and point it at the HD #2 "big partition" that you set up.
    4. Time Machine will make a copy of your existing system (the first one takes quite a while).
    5. Make a bootable clone (I suggested SuperDuper above) of your existing system in the other partition on your HD #2.
At this point (if I have not missed something) you will have two discrete backups of your entire system on HD #2.
Now I would move your entire system from HD #2 to your internal eMac using either of the copies (erase and format the internal HD first). The bootable clone can, itself, be booted (that is redundant). If you want to use the TM backup, you would need to boot from your software install DVD on your eMac.
Now you would boot from your eMac and have two copies of your system (at that point in time) on HD #2. HD #1 could then be used for anything you wish. In my own case, I am paranoid about backups so I have two external HDs with bootable clones of my system plus one Time Machine backup.
If I have thoroughly confused you or you do not want to go through all of this, the answer to your question is yes:
Does that matter though, should I just back up the file and expect it to work if I then drop it into my emac HD?
In any event, ask more questions if I (or anyone else) has confused you or not addressed your issues to your satisfaction.
    Barry
P.S. The reason I suggested two backups is the fact that Time Machine backs up a system each hour automatically. Restoring part or all of a system is relatively easy.

  • Where are the actual files on the  Time Machine backup hard drive?

If I take my time machine back up hard drive and hook it up to another computer, I cannot find my files. For instance, the files that would be in my home folder (pictures, music and movies).
When I open the finder window and go to my user folder, all I see are the folders, but they are aliases.
I get the message that the volume "documents" cannot be found.
    So where are these files?
    Thanks in advance.

I am not running leopard on the other computers, and so Time Machine is not available.
On the other computers, I need to have classic support, so I haven't installed Leopard, so that is not an option.
I just don't understand why these files do not show up on other computers. At some level, if I can't access the files on other computers, it nearly defeats the purpose of Time Machine.

Where are the settings of SQL Developer stored?
Is this a folder, an *.ini file or the Registry?
If it is a folder: Can I change the location of the folder?
    If yes: Where exactly?
How can I otherwise export/save settings otherwise?
    Peter

In your home directory will be created a path like ...\SQL Developer\system1.5.4.59.40
There SQL developer stores the local data.
You can change this path (here ...my_options/system) with th following line in the sqldeveloper.conf, located in path ...\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin:
    # This is to enforce storing of configuration information in the "/my_options/system"
    # subfolder I have created in the SQL-Developer installation directory (instead
    # of in the "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\SQL Developer"),
    # so that SQL-Developer installation directory can be just copied to another
    # location (e.g. a stick) and along with the configuration information.
    AddVMOption -Dide.user.dir=../../my_options/system
Thanks to Juri W. for this solution!
Before changing the path you should save your connection and custom report - settings via right click -> export in the connection and custom report view, I had to reimport these settings after movimg my directory.

  • I need to update to OS X ..... but I need to backup my system first.  How do I know what exterior hard drive I need in order to do this?

How do I find out what size exterior hard drive I need to back up my system?

Click on the Apple icon on menu bar and select About this Mac.  Click on the Storage button.  Look at how much space your hard drive is currently consuming take that number and at least double it.  This would be your minimum space for your hard drive back up.  Or for a simpler answer, if your hard drive is 1TB in size, get a 2TB external hard drive for backups.

  • Where are my gradient presets in photoshop cc?

This is what comes up. Where are my presets? do I need to re-download the program? I had the trial version and just payed for my CC membership so do i need to do something to get the full version?

The Gradient menu in the tool options bar for Shapes doesn't have a list of the installed gradient presets.
You can use either the Load Gradients or Replace Gradients and then in the Windows Explorer dialog navigate to
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2014\Presets\Gradients

  • I bought a new device where are my pics from old device

I have an Icloud acct and I was told that my pics would transfer to my new Iphone, where are they and what do I need to do to find them.

iCloud would back up photos and videos in your Camera Roll, so if your old pics are in the camara roll, you can transfer them to your new device.
Read this note of information from Apple support, you will find the way to do it.

  • Broken Disc - where are iMovie files

My original iLife DVD is toast and iMovie is not working properly. I have a back up of my HD before the problem started. Where are all the important files I need to move back to my HD to get iMovie working again?

No... as I mentioned the iMovie Events folder contains two very small files (8 kb and 4 kb) - far too small to be the actual Event... if I remember correctly, the Mac also contains a number of "invisible" files - perhaps the actual event is stored as one of those..... (I'm trying to see if time machine backed up an event which seems to have gone missing, but have no idea how to find it)
