Where are the "backups"-files listed in the disk utility program come from?

Hi community,
I recently tried to "tidy up" my macbook air and wondered why there is so much HD-space occupied by "backups". My disk utility program shows almost 15 GB of "backups", although I use a USB-HD for time machine backup (which works fine). Where do these files come from? Do I need them? How to delete them?
Thanks for helping!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Lion and Mountain Lion create local snapshots on MacBooks, MacBooks Air and MacBooks Pro with Time Machine activated > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
Time Machine will delete them automatically when the hard drive gets full, so you should leave this as it is. If you want, you can turn them off or delete them, but you don't need this. Also, some tasks may turn them on

  • HT4946 How do you transfer the backup file back to the iphone?

I have just updated my iphone software and now I'm having trouble to access the backup in my computer. I have found the files but haven't got a clue of how to move that back to my phone. Any help please? Thanks, Marina

Right-click (comtrol-click on a Mac) the iPhone on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes under 'Devices' and select 'Restore From Backup' .
As the backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their settings and content, for the restore to work completely you'll need all the relevant apps in your computer's iTunes library - otherwise the restore won't be able to install the apps and therefore their content (if you don't have the apps on your computer then you can re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519).

  • Backup file too big using Disk Utility

I need to back up my 160GB Mackintosh HD on my imac OSX 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) using disk utility. After a short period of the imaging process I get a message saying 'file too big'. What can I do to resolve the problem? My external drive is 1TB with 500GB available.
I've tried using Time Machine but this seems to want to wipe my external disk.

You may or may not be able to use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to shrink the single partition and create a new one in the free space.

  • No Microsoft files listed in the settings "convert into PDF files"

Hi, I wanted to convert different Microsoft Office files, but it doesn't work. There are no Microsoft files listed in the settings "convert into PDF files". I had the trial version of Adobe Acrobat Pro XI installed on a MAC in Windows that runs trough Parallels. Hope somebody can help. Thx

    Hi Rahul,
    many thanks for your suggestion.
Yes, Parallels is a virtual machine on the top of MAC and I can see all files in the Windows Explorer. Also the ones I created on the MAC top with the Microsoft Office Software Word or Excel for MAC as well the ones I created earlier on a Windows PC.
Unfortunately there is no possibility to convert files into PDF format with a click on the right mouse. And Adobe also doesn't open Word documents because it doesn't support this format.
But nonetheless it wouldn't be a solution that I prefer to convert in adavance every single file in a PDF format. I need to create a PDF package from different formats.
I assume this issue has to do something with MAC or Parallels, because this function of the Adobe Versions Acrobat 8 Pro and XI Pro work well on a Windows PC. I just don't understand why there are no Microsoft Office file formats listed in the Adobe settings. This settings also can't be changed. I tried to find out but couldn't find any hint for this problem thus I'm a bit at a loss... Maybe you have another idea?
    Regards
    Ly

  • HELP! Lost ALL my bookmarks & Bookmark Toolbar is empty. Attempts to restore from the backup files yields an error message that says, "Unable to process the backup file." Have tried opening nearly all 10 existing backups w/same result.

I was in the midst of a Firefox session w/two windows open. Nothing special about the sites. No fancy javascripts or anything. When I closed the second window and opened the "History, Show all History" pull-down, the Library screen had no data in it.
I looked for the Bookmarks.html file in my profile and it is missing. I tried renaming an old .bak file from a couple years ago and I can open it as a file and see the text of it displayed but Firefox will not recognize it as and open it as the Backups file.
Following the directions already posted - using "History, Show all History" then the "Import and Backup, Restore" process - allows Firefox to see all the backups, but trying to restore from any of them yields the "Unable to process the backup file" error message.
I have re-started my machine from a cold start - twice now.

The file that stores bookmarks is probably damaged, for details on how to fix that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox

  • Where does my backup files reside in windows

I backed up my ipad (using iTunes) to my laptop (running Windows 7).  Where can I find the backup files?  Also, the ipad that I backed is no longer mine.  My wife has an iPad Air 2.  We want to get the content (especially the pics and videos) of the backup onto her iPad. Can we do this, even if the backup is from Tom's iPad, and my wifes ipad is Mary's iPad?

You do not have the ability to pick and choose certain aspects of the backup file to restore to another device. A restore is either all or none. You can purchase 3rd party software to open a backup file and try to remove some parts of it. The backup files is a special SQLite file that needs special software to read. It is really intended just to use to restore an iOS device if necessary.  However, this support document will tell you where your backup file is located on the computer. Many of these are hidden files, so make sure you have the ability to view hidden files switched on. If you can't back up or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using iTunes - Apple Support

The backup files for my devices are saved to my internal hard drive. I have a small internal hard drive and would like them to be saved to an external drive. How can I change where iTunes automatically backs up to?

This has nothing to do with iTunes as iTunes provides no way to move or relocate the backup files.
A search of google or the fourms would reveal ways to create a folder link to relocate the physical location where the files are stored.

    Hi, Dennis -
One way to handle spam is to use an email service provider which allows the generation of alias email addresses. One such is Apple's .Mac service - the email service provided as part of a .Mac account includes the option of creating as many aliases to the real account address as one wishes.
An aliased email address can be given or posted where needed, and any mail sent to it ends up in the 'real' account. Once the alias address starts drawing excessive spam, the alias can be discarded.
