Where Are Time Machine Logs Kept?

When using TimeMachineEditor you can select "Show Time Machine Logs" to see details of past backups.
However, when using just Time Machine there is no similar option.
How can I access these logs when using TM?

Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window.

  • Where are time machine files kept?

I have a newer MBP and I recently started using Time Machine. The computer is in for repairs, so I am using an older Powerbook G4. I have hooked up my Time Machine backup to the G4 in hopes of finding the files I backed up. Can't find them. Where does Time Machine keep the files it back up. I should ad that I found an alias for the file I am looking for but not the file. The back up is being indexed right now, but I expect it will take a lot of hours to complete.

    3) I only have an USB cable that will allow the two machines to talk.
    So you'll have to use that (unless you have a F/W 400 - F/W 800 conversion plug).
    4) On the back up HD I can see an alias for my latest TM backup via the USB connection. The latest backup is from the machine I sent in for repairs and don't expect it back for several days.
How, if possible, do I get the few files I am trying to retrieve from the back up to the borrowed MBP
On the borrowed Mac, right-click the TM icon in the dock and select +*Browse Other Time Machine Backups+* (since you want files from a different Mac's backups). Select your drive, and you should find yourself in the normal "Star Wars" interface. Then you should be able to navigate to the last (or desired) backup and restore items to an alternate location, by selecting and right-clicking them, and selecting the +Restore <item> to ...+ option.

  • RE: Where are Time Machine sparsebundle files on Time Capsule?

I recently bought a Time Capsule. After some odd issues trying to get it to work in place of my Airport Extreme, it looked like it was finally working correctly.
When I first turned it on (before the problems getting it to work wirelessly), I did a full backup with Time Machine on the Capsule via Ethernet. When I clicked on the Time Capsule, I could see the sparsebundle files with a number and a date.
Somewhere down the line, I knocked all of our computers offline while trying to get Time Capsule to replace the Airport Extreme station after I ran the first backup on it.
I finally had to call Apple Support to have them walk me through setting up Time Capsule correctly and get us back online. After several attempts, we finally got it all working, but in the process the original backup files disappeared from Time Capsule, so I ran Time Machine again. It said it completed the full backup (again), and it was doing incremental backups.
My problem is, I cannot see any files on the Time Capsule when I click on it. Is that the way Time Machine/Time Capsule are supposed to work? No folder called Backup, no files. When I enter Time Machine, I see that it's backing up, but it kind of worries me that I can't SEE the sparsebundle files anywhere.
Any idea of where those files are hiding? I guess I'm used to using Backup, where I could actually see a list of files.

Time Machine stores backups over the network in the form of a sparse bundle "file". This file should show up in Finder as "ComputerName_MACaddress.sparsebundle". However, the sparse bundle is not actually a file, but a container/folder with a number of files, called bands within it.
You can access the backup files within the sparse bundle, by using Finder, as follows:
o From within Finder, click on the Time Capsule (TC) that appears under the Shared category
    o Double-click on the TC's disk name
o Double-click on the sparse bundle
It may take a while but eventually the disk image will open and you will see a folder named "Backups.backupd." This folder contains the Time machine backups.

  • Where are time Machine Backups Located on External Disk?

I was wondering where time machine backups are located on the external disk , and what permissions you have to have to view them. I recently had to delete an account that time machine was set up on and i am only allowed to see backups in the shared folder on the volume. This is on OSX Server and several computers backup their images to the server
    Thanks in Advance

On my TM drive, there is a folder called Backups.backupdb at the top level. Inside that folder is a folder named the name of my Mac (as set up for Sharing). Inside there are folders named with a date/time stamp of the backup. Inside there are folders named with my Mac's disk names. And in there are the contents of the disk in the same folder hierarchy, but only the files that changed.

  • Understanding Time Machine logs

I posted a similar question earlier, but retracted it when I realized I didn't know enough about how Time Machine worked, and hard links in particular. Having done my research, I still have my questions. Looking at the log below:

    I have several questions.
The first is why Time Machine is backing up so much data. As you can see, on Dec 22 at 13:59:39 Time Machine backed up 1.7 GB of data. I know for a fact that I did not add anywhere near 1.7 GB of data to my machine in the time between the last backup and that one. Where did Time Machine get that number? Is it backing up files I'm not aware of but which need backing up, like system files or the swap files from /private/var/vm?
Second, in the list are two drives, Wintermoot and Feezmoe. Wintermoot is my main drive, while Feezmoe is a storage drive. Because of this, the contents of Feezmoe do not change very often. However, Time Machine always seems to back up the same amount of data from both, even when nothing has been added to Feezmoe. Is Time Machine actually wasting space in this way, or is there something I don't know about how Time Machine presents information in the log which is confusing me?
Third, there always seem to be two backup cycles for each timestamp. Is the second cycle perhaps related to the Spotlight database, or do I have a setting in my Time Machine set up which needs to be changed?
I want to say that, overall, I am delighted with Time Machine's performance, but I want to make sure it is working properly and that I have set it up properly.

Is there actually a problem, ie is your backup folder growing too quickly?
I have just looked at my TM log and in the same line as you are quoting my latest backup said 214.7 MB. Now my entire backup folder is not much greater than 40 MB so the numbers being produced by the log are clearly wrong. Could be the log is confused by the multiple hard links used by TM but I'm guessing.
TM seems to working fine for me (not that I've restored anything hugely complicated to date).

  • Errors in Time Machine Log

    Hi
I've just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion and started my first Time Machine backup to an external drive which I was previously using under Lion.
The backup took longer than usual what I expected since besides the OS X upgrade there were also many application updates.
Normally I don't care for the Time Machine logs, but in this case (first backup under Mountain Lion) I opened it and was shocked about 19 errors, all of the following kind:
03:09:46 - Error (256): fetching properties: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=256 "The file “keyedobjects.nib” couldn’t be opened." Could anyone please explain what this means and if I can confidently ignore it?
    Many thanks!

  • Where does time machine store content that would be found in the Finder window under "All Images, All Movies, All Documents"? Also, I have many Garageband projects and mp3 files I can't find.

Where does time machine store content that would be found in the Finder window under "All Images, All Movies, All Documents"? Also, I have many Garageband projects and mp3 files I can't find.

Easiest way to find time machine files is to open up the folder or application(works for email and iphoto)  they were in - then click on time machine ICON or enter time machine from the time machine menu to go back through the files.

  • What size Time Capsule - i.e. how big are Time Machine Backups

    Hi all,
Just trying to decide which Time Capsule to get...my question is basically how big are Time Machine backups.
For example I have a MacBook with 100gb harddrive. At the moment about 80gb in use.
I assume the Time Capsule will immediately backup that 80gb but how big are the incremental backups. If I modify about a GB's worth of data each day, does this GB get moved to the capsule or is Time Machine cleverer than this and only backups the changes at byte level for example.
Any pointers, thoughts, etc. much appreciated.
    Michael.

I have an iMac with a 500GB hard drive and a MacBook with an 80GB hard drive. The MacBook is nearing capacity but the iMac has around 90GB of data (the Time Machine backup is around 93GB). I will likely opt for the 1TB version as I am eligable for a Government discount bringing the cost down to £303 (£183 for the 500GB version). As it's unlikely that it will be easy to upgrade the Time Capsule HDD then I'm looking at future proofing as I do not want to have to repurchase in a few years. I'm also likely to buying a second MacBook or MacBook Pro in the coming months so it does make sense.
Secondly, you can use the Time Capsule as a shared storage area as well as for the Time Machine function.

  • Where are the Planning logs?

    We are on Planning 11.1.1.3.
    where are the Planning logs?
    Some are here:
    hyperion\logs\services\HyS9Planning-sysout.log
    hyperion\logs\services\HyS9Planning-syserr.log
Are the rest in Tomcat directory?

    Hi,
Have a look at below post:

  • What does error 19 on a Time Machine log mean?

I get this error number in the Time Machine log. I am having trouble with my back up drive and this is a piece of the puzzle as I don't know what it means.

  • Are Time Machine, Mountain Lion and Retina able to work together?

I have been using for a while Time Machines with various Mac's and OS X systems with no problem.
But Time Machine (backing up on a 2TB Time Capsule) + Mountain Lion (10.8.2) + a Retina Mac Book Pro have been not able to appropriately work together for the last 2 months:
    - TM displays 'none' for 'Oldest Backup'
    - the corresponding-sparse bundle reaches 578 GB
    - whereas the present tinner  storage of the Mac is only 200 GB
    - TM seems to restart in a given way the full backup every time (2 millions itesm..)
    - but it does not take too much time
    - and 'entering' in TM displays daily bakcups for the last week, but not beyond (compared to 2 months), and several (hourly-like) backups for the last day
Unfortunately, the recipes given by http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html seem to be inefficient.
Thank you for sharing your experience(s) with this kind of problem and solution(s) is you have !
    Regards,

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Time Machine LOG file, does one exist

I'm getting errors saying that the time machine backup has failed, but there seems to be no detail as to how it failed. Yet, when I look at the Time Machine status, it will show that backups are completing. I just no longer can find out if they are really any good or not.
I need a LOG file or something where I can see the actual error message and diagnose the real problem. Telling me there is an error but not what is going on is just not at all helpful.

You are asking in the wrong forum.

  • Where are the "Reminders" reminders kept on Mac?

Today I was going through the Reminders application on my Mac and decided to delete the default Reminders list and make some new ones. What I hadn't expected was for the "Completed" list, which has many dates and such that I like to refer to, to delete as well. Additionally, Reminders was set up through iCloud, so it seems that it's permenantly gone.
However, I have Time Machine backups of my computer, and I imagine that the Reminders must be stored on the computer because iCloud just does the syncing (right?). So I'm wondering if anyone knows where the Reminders are kept on the Mac because I could then restore the original Reminders list.
If you could help me, I would be eternally grateful to you! Thanks for any help in advance.

Thanks for the help! They were exactly where you said. I just navigated to the folder as you described and had to look through each one until the folder with the Reminders showed up. (Specifically, I had to go through the .caldav folder). I hope this helped the other person as well.
By the way, do you know how to make the Reminders show up again in the completed list? I tried copying them into the real Reminders folder on my Mac, but they don't appear in the actual app. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that they were orginally deleted. But either way, I can still see the dates.
    Thanks once again.

  • Time machine logs

Does anyone know where the Time Maching backup logs are with OS-X 10.10.2? They don't show up in the Console window but do show in the widget for the Time Machine. It would be nice if Apple posted some of the minor changes and tweaks they make with versions.

The Time Machine backup logs are in the system.log file in the Console window, but the messages are displayed in the "All Messages" window now. Something new they should fix since the link is all messages.

  • Are Time Machine newly excluded backups deleted?

If you have an external disk included in your Time Machine backup, and then exclude that disk from Time Machine in system prefs, are the old backups of that disk erased/no longer included in the Time Machine backup?

    Meetoo wrote:
Thanks, that explains it! I was also wondering, is there a way to have Time Machine only back up particular items on any drive, external or internal, or does it always back up the whole drive?
Time Machine is intended to back up your entire system, and it will do that by default (but it does skip some things like system work files, most logs and caches, and trash). You can exclude things, if you want, per #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). But see #11 there, too.
