Instead of fixing the computer in an Apple Store, it is sent to a central refurbishment center and they fix anything that's wrong (other than damage to the case and/or display) for a flat fee of around US$325. I would first determine which is the fastest port on your machine (Firewire, USB, even Thunderbolt - if you want to spend that kind of money) and look at the drives at OWC and on Amazon. I would stay away from Western Digital drives - they just have a nasty track record with Macs for some reason.
I have a couple of G-technology drives that I bought from Amazon. I also have LaCie and Toshiba drives. All have served me well (a couple of the LaCie's, no longer in daily use, are over six years old and still going strong).

I am travelling to Europe next week and will be travelling on the road quite often. I would like to get some work done during that time. At one time Apple use to put an Apple firmware on the drives installed into Mac computer. That is not the case anymore. And even if they did that firmware was just to indentify the drive as an Apple drive. Those same drives would work in any computer and any drive would work in a Mac computer. Same is true today. There are NO Apple Mac drives. Apple uses the exact same drives as any other computer.
Apple uses the exact same hardware as all other computers. Same CPU, GPU, RAM, Drives, DVD drives you name it, it is the same as any PC.
Good Luck but just because you go to a Mac-centric store doesn't mean it is any different then what you would buy some place else, other then it may cost more from one of those Mac-centric places.

No. If you want Apple to do the work, then you must also get parts from them. You can do the work yourself; you can look for certified Apple tech to do the work for you; you can take it to a non-Apple affiliated shop. Note that doing it yourself or taking it to a non-Apple shop will void your warranty and prevent Apple from performing any future service on the computer.

You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

eBay is a good source, though as ever, buy wisely and make sure you get the right card for your specific model.

I wanted to clarify that Verizon has unlocked the phone for me before I left the US
The international sim cards that I have been able to locate in Norway are caled Mycall or Lebour.
They are labled mini-sim cards but do not fit nor are they as small as the original Verizon one.
I am out in the country-side now but will be in Bergen, Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark over the next few days.
