Where can I find a cheap RAM upgrade compatible with an early 2008 macbook 2.1ghz so I can run lion?

Question says it all really. Looked on amazon at a few but am not sure if they will be compatible or not. Just looking for something cheap but which will get me up to date with lion as it requires at least 2Gb and I'm currently only running the standard 2x 512Mb that it came with. Thanks.

The model 4,1 (Early 2008) can use 6gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM

Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

hi iv had my 15" 2.66GHz intle dual core late 2008 Macbook pro since early 2009 and now i have decided to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB ram cause now its quite cheap now. so iv bought the 2 packs of 8GB DDR 3 1066MHz Corsair for €40 each off ebay 1 for me and one for a friend of mine he has a Macbook pro 13" late 2009 2.5GHz intel dual core and his MBP works with now problems and there was a noticeable FPS upgrade when he played starcraft 2 which he can play on medium settings before was low but anyway so when i finally got a chance to install the x2 4GB sticks they would freeze my Macbook after a few seconds of booting into osx Lion 64bit so at first i thought the ram was f**ked but my friend let me use his 8GB ram that he had working in his MBP and it still froze so right now im back the 4GB so my question is what have i done wrong here is there a certain type of ram i should use or is my machine capable for 8GB ram but it should because its using the same MOBO as the 2009 MBP would i need a kext of kernnel update any help would really appreciated.

Do Not post stuff about how Airplay doesnt work, because i dont have Apple TV and dont need to hear about it.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • Recommended Hard Disk Upgrade for 4,1 (Early 2008) Macbook?

I've read so many disaster stories out there (primarily from Amazon.com reviews) about upgrading mac Hard Disks, I wanted to get a real recommendation.
I was hoping to get a 750GB or 1TB internal HD replacement, and probably stick with 5400RPM to save battery life.
    Any recommendations?
The "disaster stories" I heard were issues of performance degradation, stalling (due to waiting for the disk to spin up every couple of minutes) and disk failure, all in relation to the fact that they were going into macs rather than PCs.
Any suggestions? What has worked well for you?
    Thanks!

With a 7200rpm drive you might notice a slight decrease in battery time. I've put one in a Early 2006 Model 1,1 for my niece and she's had no problems with it.
    To buy a hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%2060000334 0&IsNodeId=1&name=7200%20RPM or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

However, be aware that Apple has neither the time nor the incentive to test every camera on the market, so there will be many more models, old and new, that will work perfectly even though they are not on the database.

  • I have an early 2008 macbook pro that is running slow after upgrading to lion. Is there anything I can do? this is what I have,Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • How can I find a printer that is compatible with my ox 10.4.11 operating system

    Helllo,
I have several questions but my most current one is how can I find a printer that is compatible with my current operating system?

Brother is good about supporting older Mac OS versions. We have their HL5250DN b/w laser that supports all the post-1997 Macs in the house, including a 1998 vintage Beige G3 minitower running OS 10.3.9. There is also a driver with OS9 support on the Brother web site.
The bigger problem, based on posts I see in these forums, is not a printer failing to support an older OS but one not supporting a new Mac OS. There are numerous posts after a big OS version change (like the intro of Lion) where people run out and buy whatever printer looks cute/sounds good without researching whether the device supports the new OS yet. Printer makers are often not good about having updated drivers developed by the time Apple rolls out a new OS.

  • Early 2008 Macbook Pro Should I upgrade to 6gb ram and SSD?

In the last few months, I've entered the world of 64-bit computing. I learned that this now means that my Early 2008 Macbook Pro, that has been fantastic and flawless for 6 years, needs an upgrade or replacement. I'm hard-hard stuck on whether I should upgrade it or replace it.
    My current configuration is:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Storage 200 GB SATA Disk
I need to run OSX Mavericks and Windows 7 in VMWare or Bootcamp (I don't really like bootcamp).
    I am eyeing two upgrades
    1) Crucial 4GB Single DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) CL5 SODIMM 200-Pin Notebook Memory Module CT51264AC667
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RB21JY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1& smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    2) Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT240M500SSD1
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5-Inch-adapter-Internal-CT240M500SSD1/dp/B00BQ8R M1A/ref=sr_1_10?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1392961391&sr=1-10&keywords=ssd
My question is: Is it worth it for me max out my computer by upgrading again for $250? Will this hold me over for another 2-3 years, or should I look to replace?

Well, I have researched and researched and researched and come to a conclusion. I've compared many brand new replacement computers, and also reviewed my options for upgrading my computer. Upgrading to a new computer altogether, I have come across a few very attractive offers, but they're all in the $800+ price range.
I've decided that OSX Mavericks is my main issue. My early 2008 Macbook Pro was 100% perfectly sufficient for everything I needed it for when using OSX Snow Leopard. After the upgrade, VMWare Fusion runs like a sloth and everything else runs like a slug (maybe a slug that had a 5 hour energy...). Seriously. Just now, I am running Safari and MS Word while copying files to my backup drive. The beachball is all over the place, whereas the CPU is only at 15% use and RAM is at 3.97/4.00. I'm barely using the computer, and it's ridiculously hot and the fans are screaming.
First thing I'm going to do is 'upgrade' back to Snow Leopard to recover my RAM and regain the ability to effectively run my VMWare virtual machine. Then, I'm going to opt for the $100 upgrade to total 6GB of RAM and $150 upgrade to a SSD.

You can install 2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs. The maximum amount of RAM is 6 GBs. Visit DataMem or OWC to get the proper RAM at reasonable prices.

I have an early 2008 macbook and want to upgrade the os. Can I upgrade to snow lepard?

Last night I posted: I have an early 2008 macbook and want to upgrade the os. Can I upgrade to snow leopard?
Today I started the install using a OSX 10.6.4 install dvd.  It would not install on my Macbook. The general requirements were met, the Macbook booted to the dvd but I received the meesage that I could not install the new OS. So, new question: Any advice on where to get the last release of 10.5 Leopard (> 10.5.2)? Also, does anyone know why Snow Leopard won't work? Is Leopard as far as I can go on this machine?

  • Mavericks, Early 2008 Macbook Pro, RAM Upgrade

    Hello,
I just upgraded to Mavericks on my early 2008 Macbook Pro. I originally had Snow Leopard on it and it seemed much faster before Mavericks. I currently have 2GB of ram on this machine... would upgrading to 4 GB be that much helpful? Would my machine only recognize 3 GB? And last but not least, if it would only recognize 3 GB would it be ok to install 1 GB in the first slot and 2 GB in the second? I have heard machines perform better if they have the same about of RAM in each slot.
Or should I just revert back to snow leopard??
    Thank you for you time!
    Matthew

That's an earlier model. I have the same model (early 2008) and have 4GB recognized. MacTracker says it can handle 6GB.

  • Early 2008 MacBook SSD and RAM Upgrade Compatability

I have an early 2008 macbook running OS X 10.5.8. It has a 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2, and a 120GB 5400 RPM drive. It’s model MacBook 4,1. Obviously, it could use some upgrades. It still works fine, but is just slow. I can’t afford a new one, and think I can still get some life out of this one. I am thinking about the following upgrades:
    Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147247
    OWC 4GB (2x2) Memory Upgrade - http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S4GP/
Transcend USB 2.0 Enclosure for the old hard drive currently in it - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817349001
I also plan on putting OS X 10.7 (lion) on the new SSD, unless anybody thinks keeping it at Leopard or Snow Leopard would be a better choice, performance wise.
Does anybody see any compatibility issue with any of these upgrades, or have any suggestions as to better upgrades? I realize the MacBook can only support SATA I, so it won’t get the full SATA III benefit of the SSD, but it should still be a huge performance upgrade. Thank you for any help!

have you completed the upgrade yet? I also wanted to know. Someone is trying to trade me their 2008 MB Pro as well (for my Canon L lens), I think it's the 4GB already one and I also have a crucial SSD from my Dell that I can put in. I need to have the MB to run smoothly on PS CS6 & LR5 Please let us know what the results are. What do you guys thinkg? is it enough to run those smoothly?
    Thank you

  • Early 2008 Macbook (4,1) maximum RAM per port

I have an early 2008 macbook white 2.4Ghz, or the macbook 4,1 and I understand that the maximum RAM that this model will support is 4GB.
It used to have 2x2GB RAM running on it but recently one of the slots stopped working and the computer wouldn't boot unless I took the RAM out of the slot. That leaves my computer running on just 1x2GB RAM.
The computer has been very slow since then and I was wondering if I could install 1x4GB RAM in the remaining working slot, will it make my system any quicker? Also, if I were to replace the hard disk with a SSD, would it be faster as well?
Where can I find the maximum capacity of each RAM slot?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Early 2008 MacBook supports 4 GB of memory officially, but you can install 6 GB of memory. This means that you can use a 4 GB module, so you can put a 4 GB module. There's no problem with this.
You can buy more memory at OWC or Crucial
