Where can I learn how to use Photoshop?  Is there an online manual?

I just downloaded the 30-day free trial and watched some tutorials.  So far, OK, but not enough!  Can anyone tell me where to find instructions?

Go to Online help page
Photoshop Help | Photoshop Help
and on the left half way down the page there are links to two PDF files
https://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/photoshop_reference.pdf
http://help.adobe.com/archive/en/photoshop/cc/2013/photoshop_reference.pdf  (via the archive page)
But I always use the online facility because it is easier to search and find what you are looking for.  The CC PDF is just short of 800 pages for instance.  That would take a lot of reading through!
Adobe publish their Classroom in a Book series, which break down learning the apps into manageable chunks, but I still think that too dry and difficult as a way to learn Photoshop.  Because it is such a complex application that can do so many things, it is MUCH better to learn those aspects that you have an immediate and ongoing use for.  That way you avoid the 'use it or loose it' trap.  You don't need to learn it all in one go.  In fact there will be large chunks you will _never_ need to learn because you'll never have a use for them.
So I would suggest getting to grips with layers and layer masks, as a first step.  Then when you get stuck, come back and ask on the forum.

  • Where can I learn/how to use basic plug ins

    Hi,
    Plug ins -
    Which are the basic ones I should be aware of (there are many EQ's for instance)...
    I am a musician, but haven't spent any time really learning how to properly use the plug ins that come in Logic 8...
    Any websites, DVD's etc... where I can learn a bit about this???
    Thanks in advance.

    In all seriousness, the Logic 8 plug-in and instrument manual is very, very good. A New York Times Best Seller IMO.
    It'll cover some generic applications of plug-ins as well as synthesis techniques (vocoding and physical modeling for example).
    After that, whatever is unsolved (compression techniques as another example in parenthesis!) you can research on the web. wikirecording.com is a good site - up & coming, as they say in the music biz.
    Peace.

  • Hi where can I learn how to develop app for ios in Singapore?

    I am new to iOS development. Are there any courses from apple or elsewhere in Singapore that I can learn how to develop apps for iPad and iPhone  platform?
    Thanks.

    There are a number of good resources. Stanford did indeed start up the iOS development class again, but the registration period has passed. You can stilll download the material and do a self-study, though:
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/course/coding-together-developing/id593208016
    There are also Apple's materials, the primary source of development information:
    https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/ios/index.action
    If you do a web search for "iOS development", you'll find a number of other sites that should be of help.

  • Anyone from Melbourne? Where can I learn a bachelor using mac programs?

    Hi everyone
    I have been searching everywhere but can't find a straight answer to where I can learn a bachelor degree like a bachelor in multimedia learning programs like:
    final cut pro
    shake
    motion
    maya 7
    I will have completed an advanced diploma in multimedia at the greensborough NMIT in Melbourne, but want to continue to more advanced work in the mac world in the area of Melbourne, i live in the north eastern suburbs. I don't want to do short courses but courses that go into great depth and are recognized nationally.
    I have currently been looking at courses at Swinburne at either the Hawthorn or Prarahn campuses, they look alright but I still need to get more info on these.
    Thanks guys

    I question the value of doing several years formal education in an industry in which on the job experience is EVERYTHING. That said Enmore TAFE in Sydney offers a week-long Shake course once every few months - perhaps there's something similar in Melbourne. Otherwise just buy the Gnomon DVD's and learn them inside out. Knowing which buttons to push is all a uni course will do anyway. Broadly speaking it won't equip you with the knowledge to deal with unique problems. You can only learn that under fire on a job. Try the VFXTalk challenges - I found them a great way to force yourself to learn under a deadline. And of course there's the excellent Shake tutorials that come with the product.

  • Where can I find how to use DataSource?

    Hi,
    I am quite new to JDBC and is writing some small database program. I find many examples use DataSource, I want to know how to use it, but cannot find the API in the docs section of java.com.
    Can anyone point me to the location of javax.sql.DataSource, or even better some examples of using DataSource?
    Also, I am using Oracle as my database, do I need to register the oracle driver first for DataSource first also?
    Any help will be approcaited.

    Hi,
    You can get the more detailed documentation at
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/api/javax/sql/DataSource.html and please visit http://www.datadirect-technologies.com/download/docs/jdbc/jdbcref/usejdbc.htm for information on how to connect to database using datasources.
    Hope this helps.

  • Where can I learn how FCP references video footage?

    I'm sure this is a basic (but perhaps involved?) question.
    I've been learning and using FCP on and off for over a year. I've been using online tutorials and developing a basic knowledge of the program.
    I just bought a new 27" iMac with two internal hard drives (the 256GB solid state drive, and a 2TB regular drive). Up until now, I've only ever owned computers with one internal drive, and have never even gotten into editing footage on an external drive.
    I've installed FCS 2 on my new iMac, and now I need to transfer the projects I've worked on to my new iMac, along with the video footage those projects use. And I need to know what the best way to do this is. FCS is on the solid-state drive (of course). I'm sure I should put the footage I'm editing on the secondary 2TB internal drive. And maybe the project files, too? Or should they be on the solid-state drive?
    Anyway, I really don't have a good understanding of what should be where, and what I need to be transferring, and how to make sure that FCP "knows" where to look for the footage I'm editing.
    Is there a place in the manual, or a post here, or a FAQ, or somewhere where I can read about this and get a good understanding of it? This is something I need to know, anyway, so I will know how to backup and store projects that I might want to edit further in the future.
    If it matters, I'm editing footage shot in AVCHD on a Canon camcorder. To date, all I've done is backup the actual AVCHD files on multiple drives, reasoning that if I had a crash I could edit the footage all over again. But I want to learn the proper way to do all of this.
    Thanks!

    When you "uncompress" AVCHD files
    You aren't uncompressing. You are RE-COMPRESSING. AVCHD is compressed, and you can't uncompress that. But, you compress it into an editing codec...ProRes.
    would the result be exactly the same if you did it more than once?
    Not sure what you mean by that. There will be slight loss when you recompress, but nothing you'd notice. Transcoding, as it is called, is quite a normal process. ProRes is so well designed of a codec that you can recompress to ProRes again and again 10 times before you see any issues.
    if I logged and transferred using the same settings, would the footage be exactly the same?
    You can't. FCP doesn't work with AVCHD...it must be converted to ProRes.
    My understanding is that FCP "looks" for video footage where it "expects" it to be based on how and where you imported it.
    Yes. Once you set your Capture Scratch to your external drive, say MEDIA_01...FCP keeps looking for it there. If you move it, then FCP loses contact with it. Until you tell FCP where it is again.
    Let's say I had my project saved, but somehow lost my footage. If I logged and transferred it again from the same AVCHD files, would it come out exactly the same so that (if I put it on the right drive in the right folder) my FCP project would work with it as though it was the original logged and transferred footage?
    Yes....absolutely. The project file is the most important thing. Those clips in there point to the media. If the media drive dies, or the media is deleted, simply highlight all the clips and do a BATCH CAPTURE...FCP will look for the original SOURCE files, the AVCHD files, and then re-transcode them. And they will be exactly like the first time you imported them. And your cut will be rebuilt.
    Or would there be small differences that would result in my FCP project not recognizing it?
    Yes. If you move the footage, rename the footage on the FINDER level, meaning opening the drive and renaming the raw footage, or if you rename the folder that they are in, FCP will lose the connection. Which is why you DON'T do that. Designate the Capture Scratch...import the footage, and only deal with the footage in FCP...until you really know how things work and how to get FCP to reconnect to this footage.

  • Where can I learn how to write my own Apple Script?

    I am trying to write a script to enable me to schedule email message delivery for a later time for those instances where I'm not around to physically push the send button.  I am leary of downoading scripts written by someone else, for all I know they could be Cc'ing thesmelves on every message I send using their script.
    So, I'd like to write my own.  That is, unless someone has a better and secure way of going about this.
    This is somewhat pressing.  I would appreciate any feedback you can offer.

    There are two parts to your request - generating an email, and sending it on a set schedule.
    Generating an email in AppleScript isn't hard - there are numerous examples online of how to do this, but the scheduling element is the tricky part. There's no built-in task scheduler in AppleScript (other than the simple 'delay' command), which is why people often opt for iCal which can run an AppleScript as part of an event alarm. That can get cumbersome, though, depending on the frequency and volume of emails you're sending.
    There are a few third-party tools such as iDo or PowerManager, so they might be worth checking out. If you want to roll your own you'll need to work out some method of asking the user when a message should be sent and integrating that into your own task manager - not a trivial topic.

  • Where can I learn working in Forms6i ?

    Hi all.
    Maybe someone can help me? Where can I learn, how to work and develop in Forms ?
    Thanks.

    next step is customizing your query:
    to restrict your query to a specific department:
    build a second form, buod a block based on the DEPT-table, by suere to include the deptno-column in your block, everyting elese the same a you did with you current form.
    create a button in your dept-block, integrate it in the layout and create a WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED-trigger on it.
    In the trigger we will call your EMP-form, passing the current value of deptno, to restrict the query in the emp-module.
    -- Put the value of DEPTNO into a global
    :GLOBAL.DEPTNO:=:DEPT.DEPTNO;
    -- call the emp-form
    CALL_FORM('EMP', NO_HIDE, DO_REPLACE);In WHEN-NWE-FORM-INStANCE-trigger of EMP-module do:
    -- make sure GLOBAL.DEPTNO exists
    DEFAULT_VALUE(NULL, 'GLOBAL.DEPTNO');
    IF :GLOBAL.DEPTNO IS NOT NULL THEN
      -- restrict the query of the EMP-block
      SET_BLOCK_PROPERTY('EMP', ONETIME_WHERE, 'DEPTNO=' || :GLOBAL.DEPTNO);
      GO_BLOCK('EMP');
      -- automatic query
      EXECUTE_QUERY;
    END;As an addition, we will read the department name for each record and show it besides the deptno, to do so:
    - manually create a new item in your EMP-block, name it DSP_DNAME, put datatype and length to appropiate value of DNAME-column is table DEPT, set "Database Item" to no, integrate item in your layout
    - create a POST-EUQRE-trigger on the EMP-block to read the DNAME for each row.
    DECLARE
      CURSOR crDept IS
        SELECT DNAME
          FROM DEPT
         WHERE DEPTNO=:EMP.DEPTNO;
    BEGIN
      OPEN crDept;
      FETChb crDept INTo E:EMP.DSP_DNAME;
      CLOSE crDept;
    END;thats it for now...
    good luck

    Good day!
    This is a user to user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by. (edit: Actually they are more likely to frequent the regular Photoshop Forum.)

  • Where can I get full instructions on how to use photoshop?

    Where can I get full instructions on how to use photoshop?

    Hi Stephanie,
    Photoshop is a huge program with a pretty steep learning curve. I would look at your local library or bookstore for a book for your particular version of Photoshop.
    Adobe Classroom in a Book is a good starting point.
    I also like books by Deke McClelland, Scott Kelby and Ben Willmore.
    You may also want to look at signing up at Lynda.com to access their vast video tutorial library (I believe it is $25 USD/month.)
    http://www.lynda.com/
    Adobe TV has some good free tutorials:
    http://tv.adobe.com/
    Julieanne Kost (my hero) has a ton of resources:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/
    Russell Brown also has some good videos:

  • Where do I find a tutorial on how to use photoshop elements 11 and premier elements 11?

    Where do I find a tutorial on how to use photoshop elements 11 and premier elements 11?

    The tutorial courses that got me going were on lynda.com.   Both the PE and PrE courses are taught by instructors that know the software and how to teach on line.
    The difference between random turtorials and a course is organization.  A course has a beginning, or foundation and builds skills one at a time.  Random tutorials like on Adobe TV or YouTube can be very good but they don't have the sequential skill building process.
    Many of the Adobe TV tutorials are chapters provided by lynda.com as part of their marketing program.  If you like them, you can pay the $25 a month for the full course work.

  • HT4783 I'm trying to learn how to use Airdrop between my wife's Mac and mine. We both have it, but this article did not help us learn HOW to share files.  Yippeee that we can...but HOW?

    My wife and I are trying to learn how to use Air Drop.  The "tutorial" showed us where it is.  It came up.  I saw hers (Mac).  She saw mine (Mac). But where to go after that is, apparently, in the cloud somewhere.  The description says we can share files...which is nice...but nothing tells us HOW to share those files.
    Thanks for your help out there...
    Dennis

    1. Open a new Finder window or use one that's already open
    2. Click on Airdrop, press Shift+Command+R, or find "Airdrop" in the "Go" menu
    3. Drag your file to the icon of the person you want to send the file to (if you have mountain lion, you can use the share button).
    4. The other person has to click "save"
    5. The file will send and appear in the receiver's downloads folder
    In Mountain Lion, a new feature was added: the share button. It's a button with a picture of a box and an arrow jumping out of it. Click on it and the third (and last) option is "Airdrop" and clicking on it will allow you to send files over Airdrop without opening it in Finder.
