Where can I purchase a Snow Leopard upgrade?

I am sure I'm not the only one in this position: I have a relative who has a macbook which is still running 10.5.8, but it is new enough to be able to run Mountain Lion. She has decided she would now like to upgrade, but it would appear that Apple has pulled Snow Leopard from all their online stores. She lives in rural Nova Scotia - the nearest Applestore is in Montreal (about 15 hours' drive...), and in any case I have little hope that there would be an upgrade box still sitting on the shelves there.
How can I proceed? The box exists on amazon.ca, but it's the full version, for an exorbitant price. Has Apple not thought of providing us with an easier upgrade path than searching for a 10.6 box, and then paying for the ML upgrade?

You can get the full install of Snow Leopard on ebay, just make sure it is not machine specific. Here's one:
brand new and sealed Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 single user | eBay
You should do a full backup before you procede to Lion or Mountain Lion in case you don't like it or decide you don't want it.
In my experience I found Lion nearly unusable and I went back to Snow Leopard by buying a 2010 referb with SL so I could get some work done. I still have Lion on my MBP and after a year it is still giving me beachballs, crashes, dropped wireless and various other problems. I had none of this with SL and my workflow was efficient. If you use SL for a while and get the feel of it you will have a better comparison if you move on to Lion or ML. There is a substatial change between 10.5.8 and 10.6.8, and Lion is a whole different critter.

  • Where can I find the snow leopard upgrade.  I am currently running leopard 10.5.8

I have been searching through the apple store to upgrade my current os - 10.5.8? To upgrade to lion, it appears I need to have snow leopard 10.6. However, I cannot find the upgrade in the apple store.

Start by checking if you cn run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

  • Can't Print After Snow Leopard Upgrade

I have a home network centered around an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The base station is wired to a Linksys network switch which, in turn, is wired to two computers - an Apple Dual G5 running OS X 10.4.11 and a and Mac MIni which, until yesterday was running Leopard. I have an HP Laserjet P1006 connected to the USB port of the AEBS and, until yesterday, everything worked fine. Yesterday, I ran the Snow Leopard Upgrade on my Mini and now the Mini won't print to the HP over the network. If I connect the printer directly to the MIni, it works fine; as soon as I reconnect the printer to the AEBS, the Mini will no longer print. The lights on the printer will flash but nothing comes out. I have downloaded the HP Printer driver update from Apple but this didn't help. I have reset the AEBS, to no avail. The G5 running Tiger has no problems with printing. And, my daughter just got a brand-new MacBook Pro loaded with Snow Leopard from the factory and she can print to the HP over the network without any problems.
    Any ideas?

When I upgraded iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6 it also stopped printing wirelessly to Brother MFC6490CW.
I thought I had this same issue with my Epson printer when wireless printing. Actually, in SL, wireless printing is very slow at least with an Epson. Takes about 5 minutes or so for wireless print to even start. When checking the printing status app, it will start out saying "printer ready." Then after a few minutes it will say "looking for printer." A few minutes later it will say "printing."
When I go into the next room where the printer is, the green light is "flashing" letting me know that "printing" has started.
So I guess what I am trying to say is to check the printing status app after you click "print." It's possible "Brother" is just as slow as "Epson."

  • HT3258 where can I buy/ download Snow Leopard OS for my Macbook Pro so I can run PowerPC?

    I need help.
where can I get/ buy/ download snow leopard os so I can run PowerPC..

If you are outside of the USA & Canada, the Apple Store will not ship you Snow Leopard Server.  You must have someone in the USA or Canada purchase it for you and then trans-ship it to you, which, of course, will increase the shipping costs.
Snow Leopard Server for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping costs at 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only).
Another alternative is to purchase Snow Leopard client and install that into Parallels 8:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
This will give you an environment where you can run your PowerPC CDs.

  • Where can I buy the snow leopard software disc?

I'm trying to upgrade my MacBook Pro but in order to do that I have to install the Snow Leopard version. Now when I asked a worker at the Apple store where do I get this from, he told me to look online for the installation disc.. I can't find a the installatio disc. Please help me!

    Not stupid.
5-license disk can be installed (and stay installed) on 5 separate systems at the same time.
1-user disk can be used to upgrade for the purpose of going to Lion or ML, then used to upgrade another because it is no longer actually installed on the system that is Lion or ML.
If you think you will ever need installed on two systems at the same time, remeber that Apple will eventually stop selling it for $19/$29 and your only source will be Amazon at $100+.
I bought a spare 5-user disk for the very "$100+ through Amazon" reason.

  • Where can I still get Snow leopard

Where can I still get OS X 10.6 to upgrade my OS X 10.5.8?

As far as I know, the only way to buy Snow leopard now is through Apple; you must call them (1-800-MY-APPLE). It is $29 plus tax for a family version and a reduced price of $19 plus tax for a single user copy.

If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

Your biggest problem will be finding a retail copy of the Leopard install DVD. Finding a Family Pack will be even harder.
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

  • Can you format your hard-drive while upgrading from Leopard do Snow Leopard (upgrade version)?

    Hello,
I want to purchase Snow Leopard (upgrade version) but I was planning on doing a format when installing it.
    Is it possible?
    Thank you!

Yes, the 10.6.3 white retail disk can upgrade 10.5 to 10.6 via the installer, but you can also hold c  or option key down while booting from the disk and use Disk Utility to Erase and then install 10.6 fresh.
Naturally all programs and user file will be removed, so you need to backup files first and take stock of your programs that will have to be reinstalled again from original sources.
To get the white 10.6.3 disk, call Apple via the phone, it's not sold online anymore, or search Amazon.com or amc related websites for the disk.
    Most commonly used backup methods
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
However if you choose to upgrade over 10.5, keeping your programs and files (backup files regardless) intact and it proceeds just fine, but want to improve the performance, you can use this method
How to properly defrag a Mac's hard drive
If your upgrading from 10.5 to get to 10.7 or 10.8, I don't advise it. Software Update to 10.6.8 max and stay there, your machine is too old.

  • Can I use a German Snow Leopard upgrade for my US iMac running Leopard?

I just read that for certain Intel based iMac's it is still possible to upgrade to Maverick. I'd need to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, first, to start the process. The issue is that I'm in Germany. The German Apple site sells the Snow Leopard upgrade, but I don't know if I can use it to upgrade my US iMac (early 2008/Intel based/ running 10.5.8)? Does anybody know if there is a difference between the German and the US version?

No difference what so ever other than the printing on the media.

The Snow Leopard license that Apple sells only allows you to upgrade one Mac. If you want to upgrade more than one computer, you have to buy the Mac OS X Snow Leopard family pack > http://www.amazon.com/Snow-Leopard-Family-Pack-5-User/dp/B001AMPP0W
