Where did bios version 3.6 go for K8N Neo PL/SLI ??

I checked the bios update page and they seemed to have removed 3.6!? The latest downloadable is 3.4? I'm using 3.6 at the moment should I be downgrading? I am having trouble with cool n quiet, and ncq with the 3.6 bios...

No problems here with 3.6 BIOS - I have been running BIOS 3.6 in my MSI7100 (K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI) since 8/22/05 - I'm listening to music using my onboard sound right now.  However, the onboard sound is different than the Neo4-f board that nheimler has.  I have not checked if NCQ or C'nQ are working.
BTW, alphamodel, I notice from your sig that you are using an Antec Sonata II case with the MSI7100 mobo - this comes stock with their SMARTPOWER 2.0 450W power supply.  According to Antec's specs this supply does not provide a -5V output which is required for the K8N Neo4 Pt/SLI mobo (MSI user guide, page 2-10, note 'MSI Reminds you...' at bottom of page).  I assume you are not having any problems with this PSU - or did you change it or has MSI made a change to the mobo?
I have an original Sonata (not II) that comes with a True380S that DOES have a -5V output and was considering upgrading to the larger PSU but had a problem in that it does not specify a -5V output.
Thx,
ss

  • So what BIOS version is the best for K8N SLI Diamond?

And is there a BIOS which allows me to set the v-dimm to something higher than 2.85v? I mean 3.0v would be nice at least. Heck, my old Neo2 865PE did 3.3v right out of the box!

It's not that a BIOS would solve the problem as much as it is a design issue with the motherboard.   Works great for the specifications they designed it for, but the design doesn't allow for much higher vdimm amounts.
The only solution with this board is a do it yourself modification to the motherboard that "will" void your warranty.    By using a potentiometer on the correct traces, you can dial your own vdimm.   Since this does require decent soldering skills, and more importantly will void your warranty, I'll let you google the solution.
As to the number of PCI-E slots, they don't have more due to the limitations of the nForce4 SLI chipset.   The nForce4 SLI chipset only supports a total of 20 PCI-E lanes.
x16 are used for PCI-E slot 1 (or x8 in SLI mode).
x2 are used for PCI-e slot 2 (or x8 in SLI mode, but the other x2 lanes are not available when in this mode and are unused, possibly used in the swtching mechanism as this is the case for the competition as well).
x1 is used for the online Marvel Gigabit LAN, many competitors use a PCI chipset instead allowing an x1 slot instead of this feature.
x1 is used for the online SiI3132 PCI-E SATA II controller. Many competitors use the PCI 3114 SiI chipset allowing a free x1 lane for a slot.
Count these up and we add up to 20 lanes of PCI-E, so not additional slots are available.   As for the competition, using lower performing PCI parts allowed the addition of two x1 slots in addition to the two SLI slots.   Since most add-ons are going to be LAN or SATA, looks like you'll be all set anyways.
This will change with the use of nVIDIA's newer SLI x16 chipset as more lanes are available, allowing for two x16 PCI-E slots and several x1 slots in addition.

  • What BIOS version do I need for this processor?

I am going to be starting round two soon trying to install my new MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard. I had to RMA the last one because I could not get it to work with anything I did. So my question is this, what BIOS version do I need for my processor to be recognized? I will be using the 790FX-GD70 motherboard with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 140W Quad-Core Processor.
And what version comes on the motherboards? I want to make sure I don't encounter problems again when trying to install it. If it requires a BIOS upgrade right out of the box, then I will take it to the local computer store and have them flash it with one of their lower end processors. Thanks in advance!

Is the CPU the 125W (1.5) or the 140W (1.3) version? The 125W is the newest and takes a later 1.5 BIOS. Look at the BIOS chip on the MB and write down the number on the sticker that's stuck on it. The last 3 digits = BIOS version, ie. 100 would be 1.0, 110 1.1
It's the chip just above bottom PCIe slot just to the right of N1996 number on the MB. (near the bottom center of MB) The thing is small so you need good young eyes or a magnifying glass to read it.

  • Which drivers for K8N Neo 2 Platinum

I'm just about to place an order for a K8N Neo2 Platinum to go with my AMD 64 3000+ Winchester.
As is usual I normally download the latest relevant BIOS and drivers in advance so everything is ready to go when the hardware turns up.
However, looking at the MSI page, there seems to be a bewildering array of drivers for this board: Neo2 drivers and it's not exactly clear which ones are for my specific board.
For example, I can't seem to find a relevant SATA driver from the list.
The actual board I'm going for is this one from Overclock: link to board
Can anyone list clearly the drivers, BIOS and any other utilities I will need when installing this board?
    Thanks.

Well after a lot of reading, I've determined that the following files are applicable to my board:
    BIOS
    BIOS: 7025v14.zip
    Drivers
    NVIDIA nForce3 System Drivers: NF3_CK8S.zip
    Marvell LAN Drivers: MarvellWXP69.zip
Realtek ALC Series AC'97 Audio Drivers: Realtek_ALCXXX_73.zip
I still can't seem to find a SATA/IDE driver as none of the ones listed are compatible with a Neo2 Platinum.
The closest I can find is the Nvidia nForce3 SATA/RAID driver for Windows 2K/XP but that is only for K8N Neo Platinum (7030).
Anyone know if this is the same driver for the Neo2 Platinum (7025) also?
    Have I missed anything?
There are also lots of utilities, some of which appear to be useful, if not necessary:
    Utilities
    NVIDIA nTune: nTune_MB.zip
    MSI DigiCell: DigiCell_MB.zip
    MSI PC Alert 4: PCAlert4_MB.exe
    MSI Core Center: CoreCenter_MB.exe
    MSI Live Update: LiveUpdate.exe
    Fuzzy Logic 4: FuzzyLogic.exe
    MSI DMI Browser: DMIBrowser.exe
    MSI i-Speeder: I-SPEEDER.exe
    MSI WMI Info: WMIInfo.exe
    MSI PasswordKeeper: PasswordKeeper.exe
    MSI SecureDoc: SecureDoc.exe
    MSI InfoView XP: InfoView.exe
    MSI GoodMem: insgoodmem.exe
    MSI Lockbox: LockBox.exe
Anyone care to comment on the usefulness (or not) of any of those utilities?

  • Problem flashing other bios version than 1.2 on 848P NEO

Hi. I had a problem with my MSI-6788 motherboard. It has an AMI bios version 1.2. I had some problems with software because of the Hyper Threading technology. I searched for an option to disable it, but no such option is present in my BIOS setup, but the manual shows it. I wanted to flash another version of BIOS. But, gues what, all versions besides my present one, 1.2, wouldn't work. Please help.

    Hi All!
    There goes my signature.
I am flashing bios using AMI WinFlash (WinSFI) version 2.04, wich comes with Live Update 3 kit.
I found 1.3 version bios, on the U.S.A. mirror of msi (http://www.msicomputer.com), it is not present on the Taiwan mirror, but as i expected, has BIOS id '1I848XXX'. I will try it, but i don't think it would work. I found another version on the U.S.A. mirror for 848P-VL, version 5.0, tryed it, doesn't work. It had bios id '1I865XXX'.
I find it strange that my chipset is 848P and my bios string (shown at boot time in the botom of the screen) is: 63-1200-001169-00101111-04021-I865G-1I865XXX. As you can see, it includes the string 'I865'. Twice.
AMIBIOS Motherboard Identification Utility v 1.4 detects this:
An AMIBIOS ID String Was Detected:
       63-1200-001169-00101111-040201-I865G
        |         |              |       |
        |         |              |       Chipset/BIOS Info
        |         |              BIOS Build Date
        |         Manufacturer ID
        BIOS ROM Information
    AMIBIOS ROM Size: 512 KB
BIOS Build Date: Apr 02 2001
Motherboard Manufacturer Code Detected: 1169 - Micro-Star Int?l Co., Ltd.
Please Consults Micro-Star Int?l Co., Ltd. for support
    AMIBIOS Build Tag: 1I865XXX
AMIBIOS Project ID: 1I865XXX Not listed in TAG.DAT file
    SMBIOS info:
       Manufacturer :         MICRO-STAR INC.
       Product Name :         MS-6788
       Version      :         10A
       Serial Number:         00000000
So, string 'I865G' should indicate 865G chipset? I found that this chipset comes on the MS-6728 motherboard. I tried to flash the latest version (it had '1I865XXX' bios id in the file), but ofcourse, it did not work. Is it posible that i have MS-6788 motherboard with 865G NEO2 chipset? I'm totaly confused :(.
A last question: I know that a flash memory chip can be written a number of times after wich becomes nonfunctional (at least that what autors of UniFlash utility say). I wonder how many times can i write to this chip, cos i did it enough times by now . All beacuse of that option wich should be present in my bios setup to allow me to enable/disable Hyper Threading. I hope someone would find an answer...

  • Modded bios for K8N Neo-54G Platinum

    Hi,
i've noticed that there are some modded bios versions available for the K8N (i.e. at syar2003's collection). My question is now whats the difference between them and the MSI versions (especially between the latest 1.56 versions)?
Edit: Has anyone allready used the modded bios 1.56 and has he got any performance boost?

Hehe , don't consider yourself a retard for this .
MSI's naming of theese boards is pretty simular and can cause theese
kinds of confusions .You are not the first one .
Anyway it was good you got the mishap resolved so quick
and got up and running again.
Look for radical_53 's post he has made a "Neo2" bios with nvraid ide rom bios 4.66 . Send him a message and he will email it to you ,i'm sure.
Vdimm voltage is not coming any higher i think , either for Neo1 or Neo2 .
Guess it has to do with board design , selection of regulator IC , and
the fact that msi runs mem from the 3.3v line (some voltage level will always be missed due to the components and regulation)
If you want really high vdimm there is just one way and that is hardmodding
the motherboard and that can be a risky affair bothe for board/mem and cpu
    if things go wrong.
Other alternative is another mobo .
DFI's s754 takes vdimm from +5v and there is a modded bios that gives upto 4v for memory. They have a s939 board ready thats being betatested , but it's not released yet.
MSI K8N boards have pretty desent max vdimm compared to many others .
This is what i have found on some others :
    Gigabyte max VDIMM 2.7v
    MSI K8N Neo2 VDIMM 2.85v
DFI Lanparty UT VDIMM 4.0v (s754 with modded bios)
    Asus K8N VDIMM 2.8v (some PCB's max 2.7v)
    Epox VDIMM 2.8v
    Chaintech VDIMM 2.9v

  • Severe Problems with BIOS v1.9 for K8N Neo Platinum (7030)

I updated to the new BIOS and nothing but crashes, so I tried to go back to 1.7, because everything was working fine with 1.7 and now, the BIOS is asking for a password, and I never setup a password in the BIOS. What the heck, now I have a $1000 (US) paper weight, thanks alot for the buggy BIOS update, now you can send me a new motherboard!!!
**Edit** Well I found a work around, went back to BIOS 1.5 for now until I can get 1.7 to work again, 1.8 and 1.9 are screwed up beyond belief, you can't set any overclocking features, RAM timings are messed, there is no choice for 1T/2T, currently I'm running at SPD on the DRAM and stock on all the CPU functions. I would really like if someone could test these BIOS versions before putting them up so stupid people like me update them. Also, leaving more choices than one BIOS update in MSI LiveUpdate would be nice, because flashing via the floppy drive is a pain in the butt, lucky I have an extra computer to use.**End Edit**

Do a floppy drive flash with the correct switches.  Go back to the last bios that worked properly or try Pinochio's bios which a lot of people like.  Liveupdate will mess up your bios.  So can winflash if you do not use it correctly.

After you have read about it, do this using the correct flash utilty file name and the correct  bios file name
"DOS floppy flash shall be performed with :
    awfl833d.exe w7030nms.180 /py /sn /wb /cc /cd /cp /f /e
(Replace biosfilename with appropriate version for Neo1/neo2 etc , switches remain the same )
    After flash is complete :
TURN OFF PSU (don't restart) wait 15 seconds
Turn on again , press the power button .
Enter BIOS and load optimized defaults (NO OTHER CHANGES) , save + exit
Boot the system again with the floppy in the drive to let the DMI pool build and update itself .
    Good luck.

  • BIOS FOR K8n neo platinum

A while back there was a big post about how to properly upgrade your bios and he had listed every bios beta or official for download.  Anyone have that post? and What is the best bios for the K8n Neo platinum? Im still running on 1.1....

Just the usual bios to bios temp tweak - no worries
Have been running with speedfan with a 4C offset think i can dith it now with 1.8
    Higher or lower?
Hmmm... My SpeedFan is running with no delta adjustments on the temps. I wonder if there is a discrepancy in what it's reporting & what it actually is after you boot into Windows
I'd try to go by what the Hardware Monitor says, but temp's always seem to be high when you're in BIOS anyway....

  • Good News For K8N Neo Platinum Users!!!

Ok, after fiddling with my BIOS for almost 2 days now, and scanning the forums for a solution, I contacted MSI Technical Support in California, USA. They are sending me a new BIOS chip, free of charge, so anyone having a severe problem with BIOS revisions 1.8 and 1.9 on the K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) please give tech support a call, I let them know I would be posting this in the forum and they will be inandated with phone calls, but woohoo, they are sending a new chip pre-flashed with BIOS revision 1.7.
Please refer to this thread for the reasons why:BIOS v1.9 Is Terrible

What good news?  UK based MSI did not offer any such replacement bios after my problems updating to 1.8 bios.
I purchased a new bios chip with 1.9 bios from a UK supplier.....after fitting the bios I returned to the same problems as before, failure to boot past post and freezing in bios menu. I then remembered another post on this sight and removed one stick of memory......everything back to normal    .I have just fitted a 1gb Corsair cas 2 memory and all seems well I will save my 2X 512 Corsair XL my next project which will not be a MSI Motherboard
MSI UK  have not come out of this very well and from the posts that I have read there are quite a few people out there with problems. Many thanks to all those who posted on this,  it certainly helps to know that you are not the only one with problems.

  • Need some recommendations for K8N Neo Platinum

Well I am real psyched about my k8N Neo Platinum coming on tuesday which wi8ll be coupled with a Althon64 3200+ and I want to go ahead and purchase some RAM and possibly a heatsink and was looking for some suggestions. First of all I won't be overclocking my system much if any at all bare in mind. I am looking at getting one stick of 512 for now since money isn't exactly flowing right now and am looking to spend at the MAX $150. Correct me if I am wrong but I am probably going to just go with the PC3200 since I am not doing any huge overclocks.  Here is some of the ones I was looking at:
Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series PC-3200 - $141
    Kingston HyperX 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - $141
Please provide other suggestions if you have them, I was leaning towards the Corsair.
As far as the heatsink goes I know several people on here use the  ZALMAN CNPS7000A which looks pretty darn nice to me because it is so quiet but do I really need something like this since I won't be overclocking? I am tempted to get it just because it is so quiet, that's something I am trying to do this time since my current computer is 10ft tall and sounds like a lawn mower. I got the Antec Sonata case with the big 120mm ehxaust fan to help out the cause. Thanks for any help.

Yeh I have been there and the only reason I am not getting it from there is that they are out of stock. So I was going to get it from Directron.com but I noticed that apparently have two all copper Zalman's the CNPS7000 and the CNPS7000A. I suppose I'll just get the "A" version since that is the one they have on NewEgg. Now just have to lock down my memory choice and I am all set.
My bad I just went out and checked the picture for the 7000A on Directron and it clearly has aluminum in it, they just didn't mention it in the description. I'll just have to see if it is worth it for the extra 8 bucks to get the all copper one.
