Where did my 1 gig storage/memory space go?

I had near 200 some songs on my iPod thru another computer. I have a new intel at home so agreed to erase and sync my iPod to the new system when prompted.
After erasing and sync, my ipod will hold now less than 45 total songs. Says I don't have space. I checked settings...it shows "other" as holding 898KB...audio as 922MB...with 41.4MB free remaining.
The "other" showing 898KB might make sense if the original songs had not been erased, but supposedly they are gone because I elected to erase and sync. To be sure...I played and fast forwarded the list of songs I just put on and it would seem all other songs have been erased. So, what is this "other" that the 898KB in the settings tab is showing?
I then read options I could do...and elected to Restore the iPod to factory settings. Everything erased, that is...my ipod shows itself empty...but still, shows I have a capacity only for 964.2MB. After restoring to factory settings, it still shows 898 KB being used up by "Other"
Okay...so what happened to the 1gig of space this thing had? What is this "Other"...???
appreciate your help, thanks
Larry

see...this I don't understand. Patience please...
I had the equivalent of 15 to 17 CD's worth of music
loaded to my 1 gig shuffle originally. Twenty-two
songs of that near 220 songs or more were purchased
from the iTunes store, and after syncing to my new
computer...restoring several times, I put those
twenty-two songs back on this shuffle. Then I added
28 other songs from CD's.
There are at present a total of 50 songs, the 22
being one and the same I had on before...the 28
other songs could very well likely be larger files
than the original 15-17 CD's worth of songs I had on
this thing?
Okay, I'm willing then to accept that possibility.
These fewer songs are larger files...but here's
where my confusing grows- how did this thing manage
to have nearly 220 songs before? What's different
now from a week ago? What settings would have
allowed for that many songs before...but even more
confusing to me is how would the settings have
changed by themselves since?
What do I need to do to recover its capability to
hold the number of songs it once did(?)...
understanding that I gave no commands or changes to
any settings since. Help me understand that...and I
think I'll get it. The CD's I popped into the intel
to download songs from are one in the same I used
before. I've done nothing to alter file size.
appreciated...
But you haven't provided ANY of the Get Info> Summary data I requested. HOW HARD IS IT TO DO THAT?

  • Missing Hard drive space. Gigs. storage

I believe this has nothing to do with my Macbook but to do with the OS? and once I delete files?
I have a new purchased computer. It has 250 gigs... once I upload all the software it has 230 gigs... now.. thats where it should always stay if I add nothing else...
    Issue:
I do a photo shoot upload the 60 gig job to my NEW computer. after the job is done i delete the WHOLE job off the desktop. and then it says i have 206 gigs remaining.. It should go back to 230 gigs.. where did this missing space go? I ran disc utility... and there are no separate accounts running on it...
I know alot of people with this issue as well .... my Mac Pro seems to be doing this.. Hoping theres Hope!

Do not delete the sleepimage. Don't touch anything in any of the folders that are not visible to you in the Finder — they are invisible for a reason, and the reason is that you can really screw things up for yourself if you meddle with them. They belong to the operating system, and you need to leave them alone.
As for the cache files deposited on your disk by Adobe Bridge, I suspect they are supposed to have been deleted by Bridge when you quit the app. But I'm guessing, and you should probably ask about that in the appropriate Adobe forum to get a more knowledgeable answer. It may be that Adobe assumes everyone nowadays has disk space to burn, and those files are intended to stay there to speed up Bridge's operation the next time you open it. Or it may be that there's a Preference setting in Bridge that would allow you to control how much cache space Bridge grabs for itself on your drive.

  • Im here regarding my memory usage. i checked my memory and calculated it but it doesn't show as the amount i calculated. it gives me more 7GB. i dont understand where did it go. Can someone please explain to me?

what i mean is my ipad shows used memory is 16gb but after i added up myself it is not that value. i calculated 10gb. who can help me to explain where did i use my another 6 gb.

Connect the iPad to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
How does that agree with what is shown on the iPad? How large is the "other"?

  • A newbie asks - where the heck is my 80 gigs of memory?

i finally took the plunge yesterday and gave up my pc for a macbook. upon turning it on, i was told i needed to download 12 software updates...several attempts and a couple hours later, that's done. i downloaded istat, which is a dashboard widget to monitor cpu, battery, all that stuff, and i notice that it says i'm using 55 gig of memory. i figure that i'm just not understanding what it's telling me...
now, i just got a dialog telling me that my "startup disk is almost full." how can this be? where's all my memory?
    help!

hmmm...okay, i did that, and i found a file called
'windowserver_last.log' that is taking up almost 36
    gigs. what is that?
appreciating your help, by they way...
Your windowserver_last.log is ballooning for some reason. Go trash the file and read more about it here:

  • Where did the memory go?

I have a 30 gig ipod that I just reformatted.  I tried to put files on it and its telling me there is no more room.  The one file that did transfer was around 3 gig.  Where is the other 27 gig of memory being taken up?  When I view the ipod in itunes it actually tells me there is around 24 gig (roughly) available.  However when I try to use it as a hard drive and transfer files to it I recieve an error message telling me that there is no more room available.  I'm really confused.

I believe it is a 5th generation 30 gig ipod.  It was my sons and he broke the headphone jack.  He was going to throw it away.  When I caught him I took it and checked the box in itunes to use it as basicly a 30 gig flash drive.  This has come in handy since I go to school for commercial art and some of the files are quite large.
I was using it on my imac but needed it to move some information between a pc laptop (windows 7) and pc desktop (xp).  In order to do this I had to reformat the ipod using itunes.  An error message came up when I inserted the ipod into the desktop asking me if I wanted to use itunes to reformat.  I checked the box yes and off it went.  Now when you look at the settings on the ipod it says there is 24 gig of memory available.  When you look at properties of the ipod in the pc's control panel it also says there is 24 gig of memory available.  itunes again says there is 24 gig of memory available.  However when I attempt to move files into the ipod from the folder located on the pc desktop it gives me the error message telling me there is no more room available.
Now I know that when you are using a mac and you just delete files from (say a flash drive) if you do not empty the trash at times those files will remain unseen exactly as in this manner.  Once you actually empty the trash the files will fully be gone.  I never emptied the trash on the imac.  I did a total reformat on the pc and I would think that everything was now gone.  It is acting as though the trash needs emptied.  I would have to reformat the ipod to mac again to empty the trash.  I'm really a bit mystified here.

Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup...
But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup...

My iPhoto Library (version 8.1.2) is 280GB (greater than 50% of my 500GB total storage memory on my iMac.  It was too large for me to drag it to a new hard drive so the Apple geniuses did it for me.  However they did not delete the Library from my iMac (that's my responsibility).  I dragged it to Trash and when it started to move I clicked over to the new hard drive to confirm it had indeed been copied.  I became nervous when I didn't see among the few files on this otherwise empty new hard drive anything that resembled a 280GB Library so I cancelled the migration to trash.
How can I be sure that my iphoto has been copied and that all my "metadata" survived in tact?

    the new backup drive
I thought the new drive would be your data drive to host the iPhoto library. Do you also use it for TimeMachine backups?
I am unable to search either in email as well as Finder.  I AM able to search within iPhoto though, thankfully
Spotlight may still be busy rebuildig its index.
You could try to rebuild the Spotlight Index, if you do see no progress:

I hope, other frequent posters will drop in. I have not used iPhoto 8.x in long time.

  • Please help!! I got my iPhone 4s screen fixed, now in my Photos it shows nothing, although in my memory usage it shows 10.5gb of photos, thats 2000  photos not showing up. What happened?! Where did all my photos go?!

I got my iPhone 4s screen fixed, now in my Photos it shows nothing, although in my memory usage it shows 10.5gb of photos, thats 2000  photos not showing up. What happened?! Where did all my photos go?!

WOOHOO!!! i finaly fixed the problem. Here is what to do:
Chances are if you did the same thing as me you either have
    A) No album names at all for ALL your songs in your library
    or
    B) Have the same name for every album for ALL your songs in your library.
Here is how to fix it (yah it will take a little work but its worth getting your iPod functioning properly).
Unless you dont want to have to go and actualy set al lthe album names for every song here is what you can do:
Go through to iTunes and arange your songs by Artist name. Click the top song for your first artist, hold Shift and click the last song for that same artist (to multi select all the songs for the artist) go into get info and check the Album box. Copy the name of the artist to the Album box and hit ok.
Now when u update your ipod and go into ur Artists section the actual Artist name should show up instead of the song names.
For some reason having the same album name for all your songs messes up the organization of the iPod.
Hope this helps anyone else that is having the same problem

  • Where did my pics go ??? Transferred pics from memory card to Mac Pro and lost pics on memory card and unable to find on Mac

where did my pics go. Transferred 40-50- pic from camera memory card to Mac via  slot; lost pics on memory card and unable to find anywhere in Mac. May have gone to Open Office as Data . Is that possible and if so can I get pics back or if not so ,where could they be????

First place to check is in the iPhoto library. If the images were imported there then they will be visible in the previews created.
The physical location of image files in iPhoto is quite buried in folders within folders. So, if you want to copy them then select all of the ones needed from the previews and copy from iPhoto to a new location, preferably a new folder in the Pictures folder.
The other app that might have transferred the files is Image Capture. It would download files from cards or cameras. Launch this app and look in the preferences to see the default location of transferred files.

  • Where did my memory go? HD showing full but why??

I have an 80GB HD - it's only rated to 75GB which is fine.
The problem is it's showing completely full, but when I look in Finder under Macintosh HD, the 4 folders (Applications, Library, System and Users) only take up 65GB of space.
What happened to the other 10GB - where did it go? I've looked for it everywhere...

80 GB turns out is about 75.2 GB formatted. The reason is ISO. Unfortunately the entire hard drive industry has played this game since the beginning, and ISO has let them get away with it. It is discussed in:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30065
The other two thirds of lost space, may be taken up by invisible files.

  • I uploaded a lot of important pictures to iPhoto, after downloading them I deleted them off my memory card. Now, iPhoto will not let me look at the pictures and the album in which I put them is empty. Where did they go? What should I do? Help please!

I uploaded a lot of important pictures to iPhoto, and then deleted them off my memory card. I tried looking at the pictures and they are no wheere to be found, the album in which they were is empty, and I looked everywhere for them. Where did they go? What should I do?

Check to make sure the iPhoto Advanced preferences are set to copy photos into the library when importing, i.e. a "managed" library:
If it is and you don't see any thumbnail in the Event they should be in apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you are unable to get iPhoto to recover the photos MediaRECOVER can be used on the memory card to recover the photos as long a they haven't been overwritten.  It will run in demo mode so you can see if it will recover the photo before you have to purchase it.

  • Archived&Installed - Where did my free space go?

So, after countless problems with 10.5.7, i lost my patience and had to go back to 10.5.6, by way of archiving&installing...
Thing is, prior to reverting (i am glad i did, works smooth now!), i had around 35gb free, right after archiving and installing i had 16gb, and now after backing up and deleting the previous system folder i have 25gb...
    Where did those 10gb go??

    scolfaro wrote:
thanks for the quick reply nerowolfe, however, i have already deleted that folder and i still miss something between 5-10gb of space... is there any possibility that the a&i might have left some loose ends around my hd? any reason, or cause for anything like this?
    It's possible.
There are some apps you can DL such as "whatsize" to find out where the space is going.
If you were having some problems, then some of the system log files might be very large.
thank you for the tip with the time machine, i guess im going to start using it...
Yes, it costs next to nothing and sometimes is a lifesaver; certainly a timesaver.
Another trick is to clone your HD before installing the update and install the update on the clone. That way if it does not work, you only lose the clone.
Did you use the manual download for the 10.5.7 update? I, and others, have found the autoupdate to be problematic at times.

  • Where did my hard drive space go

where did my hard drive space go. Is there a way to see where, and how, my hard drive space is being used up?

Download a utility like OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 to provide a map of how your drive space is used. Also, you should look at how much space you consume in your Home folder:
Navigate to /Users/ folder. Select your Home folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. This will display in the upper panel the follwing:
    Drive Capacity.
    Drive space Available.
    Drive space Used.

I added an SSD to my 27" 2011 iMac.  Although Sahidus is absolutely correct, it is much easier to add an SSD replacing the optical drive, it wasn't that bad to add it using an entirely seperate cable using SATA-III.  To me it is worth the extra hassle to install a SATA-III SSD.  This is where you are going to get maximum performance.
Although it appears complicated, if you go slow, the procedure to install an SSD drive isn't too bad.  It takes at most 3 hours, as long as you are prepared and have all the parts and tools.
    http://www.btobey.com/learn/imac-ssd-install.php
This describes how I did it.  Now I get awesome data performance from my iMac!
I think the 21.5" may be more difficult to find where to place the SSD.  But im sure it is possible.  Just be creative.

Before the last upgrade there was a space to manually enter an http site or modify one that was there.
Where did it go or where is it now?
I'm a basic user and have been from Netscape days. Even have the T shirt!!!

    Thanks for the reply.

Aside... The program seems to be making choices for me. Will reset give me a basic internet "explorer?" I would like to keep my Yahoo tool bar as it is now...
