Where did my USB hard drive that's attached to my Airport Extreme router go

I have a USB hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme. I upgraded to OS X.5 and the drive disappeared. If I reboot to OS X.4.10 the drive reappears.
Does Leopard recognize USB drives connected to Airport routers? How can I get Leopard to recognize this drive?

Hello.
When you setup up your Airport you give a name and password to the base station. The base station name will show up in a Finder Window. My Finder window shows it between Devices and Places in an item called Shared.
When you click in your base station name it will refresh the window content and show a folder with the name of your HD connected to the Base Station. On the top part of the window you will see a dark gray bar and the status +*Connected as: Guest*+ and a button Connect  As... . Click this button and select *Registered User* and *type your password* for the Base Station. If you wish you can select the *Remember this password in my keychain*. Now click Connect. You will see that the status in the dark gray bar shows +*Connected as: <your user name>*+.
Now remember that this HD is not a normal HD to Leopard, it is a Network HD, so it wisely shows it in the Shared item.
Now Apple understands that in the past this Network HD was shown to users as a Normal HD on the Desktop and this could generate some confusion, so they left a way for us to see it as in Tiger.
Click on the Desktop and you will the Finder menu bar, select Finder>Preferences and click on the item +*Connected servers*+ in the Show this items on the Desktop. This will do the trick.

  • How Do I Access a hard drive that is hooked up through airport extreme

Hello - I am curious how I perform the following activities while being on my mac and need help.
    - I have an airport extreme station setup on my main computer which is a PC and on that airport extreme I have plugged in a USB hard drive. I want the mac I am on to access the PC's hard drive via airport extreme.
    - How do I get my mac to recognize files and folders on my windows machine?
    Thanks
    Dave

If the drive is hooked up to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, click here and follow the instructions. If it's hooked up to a different AirPort base station, you can't.
To access the PC's internal drive, click here and use the file sharing instructions. If there's no document for Mac OS X 10.5 and that Windows version, use the one for 10.4 instead.

  • Can I access an external hard drive that is attached to my wireless network/router?

Ok, so after a couple deployments and time in the military, my collection of movies and tv shows has grown to crazy amounts. Being married, I want to access all these files on the home tv. I have all my movies onto one hard drive. That hard drive is attached to a Belkin N600 router. The router is then attached to the ATT U-Verse. My question, is how do I access the movies on the hard drive? I plan on playing them through the HDMI adapter on my iPad. I have tried File Browser and File Manager. So what are my options now? I feel like its close, but just barely out of my reach to get it all set up.

First off you will only be able to acess the content on the drive when you are at home where the drive is.  To access them you need to add them to iTunes on your computer then access them on the iPad though the Home Sharing service.
I would skip trying to play them though the iPad though.  You will make your life a lot eaiser if you spend the $100 and just buy AppleTV.  It will make this MUCH eaiser.  As well as give you access to your music, photos, etc.
Also as I am writing this I just realized if you have upgraded to iOS7 your iPad will probably not be able to play those movies.  iOS apprenlty will only play video purchased from iTunes.  It will not even play videos recorded by iOS6.

  • How do I access an external hard drive that is plugged into an AirPort Extreme

I have an external hard drive connected to my AirPort Extreme and I wanted to know how to access the photos and videos on it while using an iPhone or iPad while connected to the network.  When I go to the airport utility app on my phone or iPad I can see the drive listed under file sharing and disks so I know it's connected.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

You will need an App like Filebrowser to do what you want. More details here:

  • I can not see my external hard drive that is hooked to my airport extreme

I have hooked my iOmega 1tb hard drive to my airport extreme but can not see it on my macbook pro. need help to set this up

This is unsupported by Apple. You must configure Airport Utility to turn enable File Sharing of the drive in Sharing preferences and in the AEBS configuration. Then you have to "mount" the drive on your Desktop by selecting Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu.

  • HT4437 How do I find my external hard drives that a connected to my Airport extreme with my apple tv?

Hi I am trying to set up our house to be fully networked. We have an airport extreame the network is up and running all the Apple TVs can show photos and music from the ipads and iphones. I can't reach to the external heard drives with the apple tv is it possible to do this? How??
We can't see the printer I connected to the Airport either will it work if I am running it through a hub instead of as the only connection to that USB port?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Welcome tot he Apple Support Communities
The Apple TV can only get data from the iTunes library and the iTunes Store, so you can't use an external hard disk with it.
Where are you trying to see the connected printer?

  • Can Time Machine back up a second external hard drive that is attached via usb to a Time Capsule?

Can Time Machine back up a second external hard drive that is attached via usb to a Time Capsule?
    I have a iMac with 10.7.4

I want to back up the data on the external Hard Drive that is attached to the Time Capsule to the Tim Capsule using Time Machine.
Thanks for the clarification.  Unfortunately, that will not work.  You will need to connect the drive directly to your Mac if you want Time Machine to backup the drive to the Time Capsule.

Yes, if it has the GUID Partition Map Scheme, but only by erasing it and choosing a new format.

  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

  • Problems getting an external hard drive to work on the new Airport Extreme

I have spent hours trying to get my 320GB external hard drive to work with the new airport extreme 802.11N. I have spent hours pouring over all of the posts here discussing possible solutions, all of which have not worked. This morning, however, I gave it another try and FINALLY, I have it working. I tried something simple. Here it is:
Using the Apple Disk Utility Program, I formated my drive using the MS-DOS mode, called my Hard drive "ItunesHD". It took about 20 minutes to complete (i'm assuming because of the size of the drive). I then unplugged the router and hard drive, turned on the hard drive, then the router. After my macbook pro reconnected, I clicked on the iDisk utility icon in my menu bar, provided my password and FINALLY saw the network drive icon on my desktop!!! It seems that formatting my drive using MS-DOS compatibility mode finally worked for me. I'm not saying this will work for anyone else who is having this problem, but you can at least try it. I tried all of the MAC formatting options and have had no luck.
What I would like to know now is (..if anyone has these answers, please let me know):
    1. What is the maximum SINGLE drive capacity that this router will understand...500GB, 1TB, 2TB? I would like to get the biggest bang for my buck.
    2. Keeping #1 one in mind, I purchased an Apple TV (still waiting on it to arrive) and I would like to know if it will read multiple hard drives connected to the Airport Extreme router (...say (2) 500GB hard drives). I know you can have multiple libraries in iTunes (which to me is a cheesy solutions, there should be an option in the preferences that would allow you to save your music in one place and your movies in another). Anybody have any idea on this one?
I basically want to rip all of my dvd movies on a big hard drive connected to my airport extreme to use with my AppleTV , so I just need to find out about the maximum size and hooking up more than one hard drive and getting the AppleTV to recognize them all.

Sorry you had so much trouble hooking up a hard drive to the base station. I've done some experimenting with the feature and this is what I've found out.
You can use either the native Mac format, Mac OS Extended, or the Microsoft format known as FAT. Apple calls FAT, MS-DOS File System in Disk Utility.
If you use Mac OS Extended, the Macs on the network will be able to connect to the drive using the native AFP (Apple File Protocol) or the Microsoft native SMB (Server Message Block) protocol. PCs will only use the SMB protocol of course.
If you use MS-DOS File System both the Macs and the PCs will only use SMB to connect to the drive over the network.
Basically I've found everything works as expected with regard to volumes connected to a network.
One thing I don't have installed is the iDisk Utility. I'm wondering if it may be the cause of the problems you were having. But reading through your post it may also be the difference between expected behaviour and the proper procedure for discovering and mounting network volumes. Let me explain.
You only mention having trouble getting the drive to show up on your Desktop, you didn't describe how you went about discovering the network drive. It isn't just suppose to show up on your desktop when you plug it in to the Extreme base station. It doesn't work like the iDisk or disks connected directly to your computer using USB/Firewire.
Normally with network drives you're suppose to either browse for them using the Network icon in the Finder or using the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu, you would type the address in directly for the network volume you want to mount. Try it and see what happens.
Now to answer your other questions.
I don't have a volume large enough to hit any limits the base station may have but I did read a post about someone who said they had a 1.5 TB volume connected and could only see 1 TB of it. They were forced to partition the drive to see all available space and of course the volumes showed up as two separate drives. One thing wasn't made clear though. They didn't say what volume format they were using to format the drive, Mac OS Extended or MS-DOS.
Everything having to do with the AppleTV is just speculation at this point since no one has one yet but from what has been demonstrated so far, AppleTV relies on iTunes. In other words, it won't pull data from network volumes on its own, a computer running iTunes needs to feed it.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

  • USB Hard Drive that Disk Utility says it can't unmount

I have a 93.2 Gb Hard Drive (from an old G4 PowerBook) inside an enclosure with USB connection. While trying to recover data from it using Data Rescue (on a G4 PowerBook), Data Rescue II hung. After restart, the USB Hard Drive can not be read at all. Disk Utility says it can't repair it or erase it because it can't "Unmount" the disk. What can I do with the USB Hard Drive?

try this: open system preferences/spotlight/privacy and drag that external into spotlight privacy then try Disk Utility.

is that drive formatted for Mac ?
in a finder window, click on the extreme's icon under shared. do you see a dialog +connect as ...+ ?
in airport utility, click +manual setup+ for the extreme and go the the disks tab. do you see your drive ?
have you tried a complete power cycle of your devices ?

  • How to set up windows 8 to print to printer that is attached to an airport extreme?

    Hello,
Please advise what is the best way to setup my daughters new windows 8 desktop to print to a printer attached to an airport extreme.
I used Bonquir to add the printer but nothing happens when I print something. It does not even register in the print que.
    I obviously am missing something....
    on a second question.
i most often could print from my powerbook... yeah it still works but occationally I have to delete the printer and reinstall it in the priner section of the powerbook.
Please advise what I need to do to make the connection more stable.... it does that once a month or so...
    Thank you

Can windows actually see the printer.
Is it detected and setup ok in windows?
Can you ping the AE? Firewall issues can prevent the print job being processed even if the printer was made available.
How old is this extreme and what firmware?
DId you use correct SMB naming?
If it is Gen1-5 then use the airport utility in windows and you should then be able to see if the printer is actually working from the utility. Printer is no longer even a tab on the new version utility in a Mac.

  • Initiating external usb hard drive that has been formatted for Windows

I have a 400GB USB external hard drive and it was working fine until I tried to erase it in disk utility and it wouldn't work and kept causing disk utility to freeze up and it was very difficult to force quit even.
I took it to a PC shop and they reformatted it for windows and it worked on their windows so I thought I would try and reformat it again in disk utility to run on mac but it just did the same things and froze again.
If anyone can understand what I am babbling about could you please give me some advice before I give up
    Thanks

No it has to be formatted for OS X. Mac Extended (Journaled).
