Where did my volume go?

I use an Emac which is barely 2 years old. Suddenly I can only get a very faint volume playing cds or using itunes. It was fine before and I haven't changed any settings. I listen to sounds either through the built in speakers or use a T-amp (great product by the way) plugged into the headphone socket. Either way the volume has suddenly gone way down. Very disappointing.

You can't actually blow up the display playing with the settings! (Don't laugh too hard; WayBackWhen, when the HP9836 was thehot desktop controller, user newsletters brightly pointed out undocumented "writeio" commands that allowed users to adjust the built-in display. Very cool, except if you wrote the wrong value, you could blow out the display of what at the time was a US$12,000 computer.)
By all means, play around with the advanced settings in System Preferences> Display> color profile and see if you can get the display closer to your liking. Dropping the Gamma value and the temperturre value, either by themselves or in combination, should help with the washed-out appearance.

Where did my volume icon go,
I would check to make sure it didn’t somehow get removed from the system tray.
In order to do this:
Press the Windows key and X simultaneously.
Select Control Panel.
Select Notification Area Icons.
From this screen you’ll see several icons. Find Volume and make sure the behaviors are set to
Show icon and notifications.
Select OK.
If the behaviors were not set appropriately and you made the above change, then the icon should reappear.
In the event that the icon still not appear, it may be a driver issue and you’ll need to look at your hardware manufacturer’s website to see if there is an updated driver that you need to download and install.

Album Artwork - Where did the volume and song title go?

I've been searching online for hours and can't find this on my own so i'm reachin out...
I did a software update (which i won't ever do again) and now when a song is playing the cover art (or a big empty box if i remove cover art) is all that shows on the screen. It use to display the current song playing including artwork, the progression of the song, and the volume in the screen. now i can't get any information on the screen other than the album art cover. anybody else experienced this???

Where did this volume come from?

I was just about to burn a disk image I made from iDVD onto a DVD-R and when I was using Disk Utility to set it up I got a window titled "Select Image to Burn" that listed the following volumes.
iMac Clone
Macintosh HD
Microsoft Office 2000 Pro.dmg
Netfolder
Time Machine.
I recognize the Microsoft Office 2000 Pro.dmg as something I used when I was trying to set up Virtual PC but I don't know why it is in this list or how to get rid of it. It is not on my desktop and this is the first time I've seen it. I tried to drag it to the trash but it still remains. All of the other volumes I recognize.
Where and what is this file and how do I get rid of it?

Try this:
1. In the Finder's Go menu items, select the "Go to Folder..." option
2. Type in this
/Volumes
and hit the the Go button
3. A new Finder window will open displaying the contents of the otherwise invisible Volumes folder
4. Check the list--what SHOULD be there are just aliases to all your mounted drives, if the errant dmg file is there drag it out and onto the Desktop
Sometimes mishaps happen and odd things get lodged in the /Volumes folder. Sound like this might be the case.

[solved] Where did XFCE's volume control panel item go?

I did an update recently and noticed that the volume control panel item disappeared. So I went to add it again ... and it's not in the list! I looked in the repos and there isn't a package for it either. Where did it go?

Where did the phantom volume come from?

I have an internal hard drive that is divided into two partitions, on one partition is OS 9 (Macintosh HD) the other is X–Tiger (Macintosh X). A new, grayed out, unmounted hard drive/volume (Named Macintosh HD) seems to have appeared out of nowhere. When I select it in Disk Utility, it says that it's an HFS volume and it's unmounted using about 128 mb of space. It's as if another partition (3rd) tagged onto the original two.
Where did it come from? Can I get rid of it?

It sounds like the HFS wrapper may have become sort of visible. There's a bit of info about the wrapper in this article -

Whether that indicates a problem, I don't know - but I would obtain and run Alsoft's DiskWarrior, which does have the ability to repair damage to an HFS wrapper.

I have cropped a clip and now want to take other clips from the remaining footage. But the discarded footage which contains other desirable clips is not in Trash. So, where did it go so I can access it?

I don't know how it did it (because I cannot duplicate the results) but one time the finder found a folder on my main hard drive called/Volumes Under that folder are folders called the names of previous external hard drives with numbers following them. /Volumes does not appear on my Mac hard drive. Obviously it is hidden somewhere. But it has content. Most of the time, the file names in that content don't show up in a search, but obviously I have found the content and deleted one huge folder of stuff it has saved. When I found the folder, I immediately opened it, where I found this stuff. But unfortunately when it opened in the search window I went directly to the "drive" folder and had no back arrow, so I couldn't get back to the search that found the content and the mystery /Volumes folder. The finder information window does show /Volumes directly off of the main drive (its not in any other folder). Anybody know where this stuff is hidden or how to get to it.

Where did my project go??

Hi everyone,
I have been importing my videos from digital camcorder into iMovie '08 without any problems. With each tape it asks me 4 a project name and if I would like to continue from an old project or a new one. I always say new.
Anyway, I had an two one hour tapes that I wanted to transfer and make it to one project. I did the first tape and called it home movie 1. When I got to the second tape it asked if I wanted to continue or start a new project and I said continue. Spent the hour transferring and when I got to the project, what I had transferred from tape one was completely gone!!
I have no idea what happened. PLEASE if anyone can offer any suggestions I would be very grateful.

There haven't been any updates to Prelude since December. And those are never forced upgrades.
What was the location of your project? Did any volumes or driver letters move around?
Prelude doesn't have a delete function for projects or media. Most we do is remove a reference to a file from a project, but never delete the actual media.
Are you missing any other files? Have you run a disk utility to verify the integrity of your hard drive?

My Address book was wiped out after updating. Where did it go so I can get my addresses back?

I was cleaning up my Address book and the entire list disappeared. Where did it go? I can't find it.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

Disable 24-bit crystalizer... and where did the snap/crackle/pop

For the longest time, I thought the crackling and popping was because of the CMSS3D Headphone option being enabled, but just for kicks, I tried disabling the 24-bit crystalizer, and poof! Where did the snap/crackle/pop go? It seems to be gone! I can li've without the crystalizer, after all there is really no way to make something sound better than the source. This gives me hope that it is a driver issue after all. I have a Rev A fatalty.

It is still there... you cant just hear it as good anymore.. i never have crystalizer on, i still got my rice crispies. So good if you dont hear it anymore.. but i know this wont fix it for many of us. I can agree that if i have cmss3d enabled but have MacroFX and Elevation Filter off, the pops& crackles are lower in volume.

"Boot OSX" drive, where did it come from?

I have an intel xserve with 1 80gb drive (for booting) and 2 750bg drives mirrored(via software) as my DATA drive.
After I initially set this up, there was one "BOOT" drive and one "DATA" drive on the desktop.
I recently logged into the server via ARD and noticed there was a third drive now, named "Boot OSX".
I, nor any of my staff, installed or created this drive(volume).
It appears to be part of the mirror raid, but where did it come from???

FWIW, I saw this shortly after installing Leopard and initially thought it was an external drive I set up as backup. It was only later that I realized that I didn't have the external drive plugged in when I saw "Boot OSX" on my desktop.
Tonight, I saw it again, googled, and found this thread. Could this have anything to do with Software Update? Software Update let me know I needed to install some updates. I clicked on details and ended up minimizing the application to install them later. After twiddling around with some other things I noticed the "Boot OSX" on my desktop, again. I went ahead and let Software Update "do it's thing" and after a reboot, like the other posters in this thread, it was gone.
So ... as I asked, earlier, could this have something to do with Software Update?

New openbox! Where did my settings go?

Ok now i am realy pissed.. I updated openbox, and now all of my settings has been ereased.. The theme is changed.. The menuitems is gone!
No of the keyboard shortcuts works.. I cant start obconf.. I cant start the menu editor.. I cant open terminals.. Also my sweat traybar is also fucked..
Where did my old settings go?

I go to the download page to download the drivers for this 551dn. I download all windows 7, 8, 8.1, 2008, 2012, so that i can put them on my print server. I downloaded them from here..

I get the file downloaded (LJEnt-color-M551-Drv-no-installer_12297.exe), i run it, get the security warning and Run. the file extracts - then POOF, the installer is gone.
where did the files go? They aren't on the root of the C: drive, a folder/files were not created on my desktop, no files or folder created in my downloads folder.
I was never asked for a file save location.... ??? really? is this this basic stuff?
Where are the files? this $$$ printer is a brick until i get drivers!

UPDATE- I FOUND THE FILES!!
First of all, HP... i'm not impressed.
All the files for all the drivers are in a series of temp folders...

There is no change to this problem after 6 months since the last post. Put simply, and as stated in the previous posts, there is no way to scan a document and receive the image on your PC. If you are working with graphics for any length of time or want to create an image for inclusion as an image in a document or web page using this piece of equipment will not allow you to do so.
Great shame as every other function works well - it cannot be beyond the wit of HP to include a Windows application that enables you to scan an image, receive it in the software you are using at the time (e.g. Outlook, Word, Photoshop...) and use it in your work.
HP Printers several years older than this £1000+ Enterprise printer were able to do this simple job and have done so for a great many years. Just being able to use Microsoft's Fax and Scan would be start.

How do I print a mirror image? Where did the old functionality go?

Within the last several months I was able to print a mirror image of my document to my HP DeskJet F4180 in high resolution. I don't know if it is the new HP drivers, or my new Snow Leopard OS but now I can' figure out how to do it again. I can grab a screen shot in and flip it in Preview but it ends up printing in low resolution.
I have printed mirror images in the past from my PDF applciations and I think from Office 2008 (PowerPoint). I find no documents saved on my hard drive that come up saved as a reverse image so I suspect that I was using a printer feature not an application feature to print mirror images.
Where did this functionality go?

Use the check box marked Flip Image. Didn't is say mirror before?
