Where do I change file preferences to allow opening of files in time Machine? Or can it only be restored?

TRying to see if photos backed up with time machine are actually on the backup drive. It will not allow to open?

Go to your photos in Finder, then enter TM interface. When you see that they are there you can cancel.

  • Where to find video files in Time Machine?

I'm still not figuring all of this out apparently. Hours later I have backed up my computer onto an external HD via Time Machine.  I wanted to check & be sure my videos are on there before I delete some from my hard drive & when I use finder to open Time Machine (the external HD), I cannot find anywhere in there that there are video files or even all of my (1000+) photos from Iphoto... where would these be listed? I don't see titles of the programs or folders called video or photo or pictures or anything along those lines. I even did a search of the drive for .mov and got nothing....
    Help!

You should never, NEVER use Finder to view or manage files on a Time Machine back-up.
With the Time Machine drive mounted, click the Time Machine icon at the top menu bar. Amongst the choices that come up is, "Enter Time Machine". A "Finder-like" set of windows hovering in outer space will open with your back-ups layered by date of the backup (shown below). Once you navigate to (using the big silver arrows), find the date you want, click on the folder icon in the window that will navigate your way to the file(s) you want to see, or restore.
At that point you can "see" whether the files you wanted to check on are there. You can also restore any files you wish to do so, by highlighting (clicking a file or folder), then hit the "Restore" button at the bottom right of the window.

  • Corrupt m4a file in Time Machine.  Can I fix it?

I realized I'd accidentally deleted a music file (an m4a file) shortly after I created it. I went into Time Machine and found the file. It's only in one place in Time Machine (only available at one previous date backup, in other words).
I restored the file, but it won't play. Nor can I get any audio program to open it. I'm assuming the file is corrupt. ?
    Is this fixable?

Just an addendum:  I narrowed it down a little more last night.  The time stamp is preserved on import of RAW files into PSE--it's the time stamp on the edited versions that is off by an hour--one hour ahead, as if on eastern time (we're in the central US time zone).  Is there maybe some place that I can't find to change the time zone ???

Where is the data file for the address book located, I need to restore mine from backup but don't know where it is to do so.  Putting my Mac Pro onto icloud synching contacts resulted in duplicate and triplicates of the same cards.  I have a few THOUSAND contacts and the last time this happened was on mobile me.  that had a function where you could replace info on the mobile me server with info on the computer.  I see no way to do that on the new cloud.

In the stupidly hidden user's Library->/Application Support/AddressBook/ labeled as AddressBook-v22.abcddb
For TM restores, see Pondini's TM FAQs for starters, since I don't use TM.

And now anytime I am entering an ip-address I am asked if I want to download the file.

It happens when the modem server doesn't send the file as text/html, but with another MIME type.<br />
I tried the index.html addition in case the server might send that file as text/html.<br />
If your DSL modem has a support website then you can try to ask there for advice about how to configure the modem server.

  • HT4889 Transferred files via time machine and not log in password will not allow me to log in

I have a new MacBook pro, I transferred files via time machine and a removable hard drive. Now new MacBook does not recognize the log in password. What can I do to reset the password?

Did you migrate when you first booted up in Setup Assistant or did you migrate later? When you migrate later it can create a second account, check in Mac HD/Users to see if this is the situation.

  • Cannot access files on Time Machine due to permissions

I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Mountain Lion. I am now trying to pull my files back off of Time Machine - music, pictures, documents. I keep getting errors stating I do not have permission to access certain files and the whole process shuts down. On my backup drive, I had a different username. Is that the problem? If so, how can I fix it without creating a new user with my old name and creating more problems?

I suspect that the problem isn't so much a different user name but a different user ID.  You can see that for your current account in System Preferences > Users & Groups by right-clicking on a user and selecting "Advanced Options".  (Heed the warning about changing the values you see in that panel!)
You can see the user ID for a file in Time Machine using a command in a Terminal session.  Open a session and type "ls -ln ", where the letters "l" are lower-case "L"s and there's a space after what you type.  (Don't type the quotes.)  Then use the Finder to navigate to a file on your Time Machine disk that you can't access, drag it to the Terminal window, and press <return>.  The user ID will be shown in the third field.  It will probably be a number like as 501.  If your account's user ID is 501 and that of the Time Machine files is 502, I'd create a new account on your Mac.  It will probably be given the user ID 502, which will match that of the Time Machine files.

  • How can I back up only selected files using Time Machine?

I'm a graphic designer, I use a number of Time Capsules to periodically back up my entire computer. But I also want to set up another Time Capsule (bus powered external hard drive) that will continually run as I work and only back up a single folder and all it's sub folders - in this case a folder called 'Client Files'.
QUESTION: How do I use Time Machine to back up only my 'Client Files' folder and all it's sub folders?

Frankly, this is probably not worth the time and trouble that it will take to set it up.
Time Machine backs up your entire Mac by default.
Time Machine Preferences / Options gives you the ability to Exclude items from backup, so to do what you want, you basically will have to Exclude everything else on the Mac from being backed up.  That is going to be quite a task depending on where your Client Files folder resides and you have your Finder files set up.
It will not be that difficult to Exclude major folders..... things like Applicatons, Pictures, Music, Documents, etc.....but to get to the point where you want may not be that easy.
Take a look at things by opening Time Machine Preferences, then click on Options
Since you will be adding items to be Excluded, you would need to click the + button at the bottom of the window and then navigate to find the general folder that you want to Exclude.
Unfortunately, you cannot simply tell Time Machine to only back up the items that you want.....you have to tell Time Machine what NOT to back up.....which is going to be most of your Mac.
And.....whatever you set up in Time Machine /Options to be Excluded will apply to all backups to all Time Capsules.  You cannot specify what is Excluded on one Time Capsule and not another. It's all or nothing. Not what you want to do, I am sure.
    Good luck

  • Can't restore files from Time machine backup?

I kinda successfully restored my files from Time Machine after a clean re-install of Snow Leopard (Time Machine thought they were new files, though, so backed up the 26 GB... waste of space), but now I'm trying to restore the files of the other user on the computer. In her pictures folder, I can't copy the iPhoto Library because I don't have permission to access it! The same problem occurred on my account too, but I was able to go to my Time Machine drive and manually change the permissions for the files I wanted, which doesn't work on her account.
I have made a Youtube video of the error:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1__PdyAetVg
Can anyone assist me in restoring the files? That's all I need help in. Thanks

But if I transfer everything with the Setup Assistant, won't I once again be experiencing the problems I had?
If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, can't find files on time machine

I have an external hard drive where I backup my Macbook Pro.  I recently upgraded to Mavericks and now I can't find old files on time machine.  I am looking for a file around a certain date, but no matter what date I look at in time machine - the files and data seem to be the same.  I hope someone has a solution to my problem!

    Hi Miax1,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are looking for a specific file in your Time Machine backup. It sounds like you are familiar with the interface but just cannot find the file. Just to make sure you are searching in the right area, I suggest reviewing the Restoring data from Time Machine backups section from the following article. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
    Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu. The restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time. The timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive. If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Lion v10.7 and later, portable Macs include local snapshots.
You can also perform a Spotlight search from the Finder. Simply enter a search term in the Spotlight search field, and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
    I hope this helps,
    -Joe

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??
