Where do I drag my google earth to my hard drive?

I downloaded google earth to my iMac desktop and it says drag to my harddrive.  I'm new to the Mac and do not have a clue where to drag it or even why it asks me that.  why not just have an icon that you open??

it needs to be in the Macintosh HD, not applications
Go to finder  > preferences > GENERAL >   check "hard disks" and external disks"
THEN a icon will apear on your desktop saying Macintosh HD
double click to open it and drag google there

How do I 'drag' an application like Google Earth to my Hard Drive to install it?

Click and hold on it, and then drag the cursor to the Applications folder, either in the Finder's sidebar, to an alias of it, or in a separate Finder window.

Thanks for that, it was really helpful.
Glad to hear that worked for you. While formatting an external drive with a Mac format is best if it will be used only with a Mac, if the files on the drive have to be accessible to a PC also, it's possible to format it in an exFAT format, which both the Mac and a PC can read from and write to. However, if you do that, do the actual formatting while the external is connected to the PC.

  • Without thinking, I dragged my iTunes folder to new hard drive ...

As friendly as Macs are - and as long as I have been using them - the iTunes issues never cease to puzzle me. In this case, I hope there is an easy answer, though I fear I know differently form the posts.
I wanted to move my itunes to my new laCie hub/drive extenral to free up space for FCP on my main internal drives. So I thought (or didn't think) and dragged to make a copy of the iTunes folder from my main 'Music' location. Now, of course, I can't return it or reconnect it. I DO have my ipod fully loaded .. so assume that is an option to restore it.
So a) is there an option i don't know about (I just want it back the way it was! AaRRGGGH!)
or b) can you offer me the info on restoring from ipod (ouch)
    Thanks!
    Brent

When dragging a folder to another disk, Mac OS makes a copy.
You can drag the folder out of the trash onto the external and open iTunes with the Option key held or you can use the original folder on the internal.
If you want you use the external drive for iTunes.
    Quite iTunes.
Drag the iTunes folder from the trash to where you want.
Start iTunes and hold the Option key. Select Choose existing library and select the folder on the external drive.
You should see all your music and playlists.
    Quti iTunes.
Drag the original folder on yoru internal drive tot eh trash (don't empty it yet).
Start iTunes normally and make sure all your music works.
If so, you can delete the trash and free up all that space on the internal drive.

  • How do you move just your movies and tv shows to an external hard drive and have iTunes recognize that that is where that media is (keeping music on the internal hard drive itself and putting only movies and tv shows on an external hard drive)?

I'm not sure about how to get iTunes to recognize that my music is in one location (on my MacBook's internal hard drive) and my movies and tv shows are in another (on an external hard drive I purchased).  I know how to make iTunes recognize that all of my iTunes files are on an external hard drive, but not only some of them.  Please help me out.  Thanks.

While you can do that, it is not a feature of iTunes.  Put your movies on the external drive, then add them to iTunes by dragging the files to iTunes while holding the option (alt) key down so it leaves the files where they are located.  There are other ways to move them if they are already added but they can be more involved and tricky.  If it's just one or two try:  http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected

  • I can't manually drag files to/from my external hard drive to my macbook air!

My laptop is running on 10.9.4 (freshly installed, quite literally two days ago).
I have all permissions to read and write on my hard drive, and it is formatted in MS-DOS (FAT32). It worked yesterday when I moved music on the laptop but now when I try to move other files (even within the hard drive itself) I can't. Help please! The only way I can move anything to and from the hard drive is to copy-paste is but I cannot manually drag anything.

Can you drag files to or from any folder?

  • My old computer died. I removed the hard drive and converted it to an external hard drive. I want to get the bookmarks from that hard drive onto the new hard drive. I have Firefox 3.6.1 right now. Where do I find the bookmarks on the old hard drive?

If I had to I could go to Internet Explorer Favorites on the old hard drive and find that file and bring those over to the new computer and into Firefox but those are outdated. Where would the favorites for Internet Explorer be found if you can't tell me where to find the Firefox Bookmarks file. I'd much prefer to find the Firefox Bookmarks, though.

  • HT1751 when I try to drag my Itunes into my external hard drive, I get the "no way" symbol, circ;e with a line thjrough it. How can I back up? I have lost a fortune in purchased items because I cannot back up despite following the Unhelpful help.

I cannot drag my Itunes folder to my external hard drive, despite following the unhelpful help exactly. I get a "no way" sign Circle with a line though it. I have lost a fortune in purchased goods (audio books)  because I cant do it. Itunes have said they cant reimburse me and they dont have those books anymore, so cannot redownload them for me. Please remind me NEVER to buy apple products again.
I am scared I am going to lose more money seeing I cant BACK ANYTHING UP.

If you used the hard drive with another Mac then it is likely Mac formatted.  It was because you posted in the iTunes for Windows forum (kind of the equivalent to taking a VW to a Ford dealership for service) I thought you might be using a Windows formatted drive.
Thumb drives are not universal.  There isn't a "universal" drive format.  Some work partly with both systems but are not fully compatible.
Click once on the hard drive icon on the desktop.  Fo to File then Get Info.  It will say the drive format.
Frankly I have never had your problem with a drive so I can't help too much except in general experience.  The prohibitory sign is pretty universal and for some reason you are not allowed to copy to that drive.
I think if you had a Windows computer you'd be unhappy with it too and probably be posting on a forum that your machine was virus ridden and crashing and you didn't know anything about registries...  To be honest, I was doing a presentation on a friend's Windows computer and wanted to get it to display a simple image file.  There was no way we could get the .jpg image file to open with anything but Windows Explorer which is a web browser!  I mean, that's really bad, and of course he was so used to using it without knowing anything about computers that he could not help me.  I did my presentation in front of 30 people using Explorer.

  • I just got an external hard drive and did my first backup of my total MacBook Pro.  In my confusion I thought I could drag a particular item to the hard drive icon on my desktop.

I had my most frequently used documents in Documents folder in the Dock.  I thought I'd just drag it to the external hard drive, which I did, but then it was gone from the dock and I haven't had any luck putting it back.  Somehow the applications folder has also disappeared!  Can someone please tell me explicitly how to get documents and application folders back on the dock.

Thank you - I had tried to do this but it didn't work.  What I finally found that worked was that on the desktop I right clicked and then selected "new folder".  I named it documents (then did the same for applications) and dragged those folders from the desktop to the dock, and am in the process of dragging the documents and applicatons from their original folders into the new ones - it seems to be working fine.
I have no idea why it didn't work as you suggested - I tried several times with no luck, I even took a few unused icons off the dock in case there was not enough room.
So hopefully one of our solutions will help someone else.  Thanks again.

  • Where do I find my Bookmrks on a slave hard drive that used to be the main one?

My old computer motherboard died and I replaced it. I added my old hard drive to the new computer. I want to import the bookmarks to the new set up. Where do I find the Firefox Bookmarks on that old hard drive?
This will not be C:\\... WRONG HARD DRIVE. It's on the hard drive that was in the old computer.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike

Now you need to go to Bookmarks, show all bookmarks, import and backup, then click on restore and select the json file that you copy

  • I can't drag and drop movies from my hard drive onto my iPad.

I just recently upgraded from an iPad to an iPad 2. I still have the old iPad. I have no problem dragging and dropping movies and TV shows from my external hard drive onto my old iPad, but I can't seem to do it with the iPad 2. It syncs movies and TV shows from iTunes, but I don't want to have to load everything into iTunes just to get it onto my iPad. Again, no problems doing it with the old iPad. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

No I didn't - checked it, and now it works! I guess I forgot about setting that feature up when I got my first iPad. Thanks Allan!

  • Where is a brush I created saved on my hard drive?

I just got a new computer and the brushes I created and saved are missing. Is there way to find them (I have access to my old hard drive)? Or are they gone for good? I can recreate them, but for some reason CS2 is not letting my define them to save them in the last step- Edit, Define Brush. I can define a pattern, but it will not let me define the brush!!
So it is a 2 point question-
    1. Where are my brushes (I found all the ones I have purchased or downloaded already- but not the ones I created and saved in CS2)?
    2. Why can't I choose "define brush"?
I am running on Windows 7 now and find that I am having a few issues with CS2 doing things a little differently!
    Thanks!

I played around and found how to hide or show hidden files but that wasn't the answer. The I saw that you posted a reply that it would't work anyway!
No, I never saved them externally, just when I created them and chose "define brush" I created a handful of them this way and I guess they are just gone now?? I was hoping they would have been saved within the PS files somewhere! But if they are not in with the other brushes, I guess not.

  • Where do CD Track Names get saved on my hard drive?

when i insert a cd, iTunes automatically checks CDDB for track titles, artist, etc. i can take the CD out and re-insert at a later date to import, and iTunes will remember which CD it is. some sort of preference i presume. this is all understood.
    my question is:
where is this preference cached? if i need to backup this group of preferences, where do i look? is it in "iTunes Music Library.xml" in the iTunes Folder? or is it in "com.apple.iTunes.plist" in my User/Library/Preferences Folder?
i've spent the last few hours just quickly getting track info from various CD's while importing another CD. however i plan to move iTunes to my Powerbook, probably before i finish importing the remaining CD's (and i'll be someplace without an internet connection). so i want to keep the effort of the morning intact.
    thanks for the help, anybody.

Can't help you with where the data is stored but if you follow this guide on moving your iTunes folder it should make things easier for you:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748

  • How do i drag files from finder to external hard drive

AS my Mac Air doesnt have huge storage capabiities I have bought myself a 1tetrabite seagate drive in order to store all my photos - of which I have many. I cannot seem to drag/transfer the files from the Mac onto the drive. Can anyone advise how to do this.

Have you formatted the Seagate HDD in Disk Utility Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
    Ciao.

  • Why cant i drag photos from iphoto to external hard drive

    W

Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and is connected with a wired connection, quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the EHD intact as a single entity and launch iPhoto while depressing to option key. Use the resulting select library window to select the new location. Be sure the EHD is available prior to launching iPhoto
