Where do I fine new people to video chat with ?

I have been using iChat for a couple of years and have several men that I chat with from time to time. I am a 68 year old retired commercial artist. Just looking to expand my list of contacts. I am a Christian, I don't make a practice of chatting with women, I am married and very straight.

I cant hear or see the other people when video chatting with skype, facebook video, messenger etc. it was working fine until it just stopped. I just moved house but have the same provider and still on the same account. any ideas?

also the video and sound comes up for a second but then it freezes and the audio becomes glitchy and interupted so cant really hear them.

My google voice phone always worked until a week ago when suddenly google would not let me call out from any browser until I installed their new google voice and video chat (made by vidyo) software. I was told by genius bar to install Yosemite, which I did. But that did not solve the problem. I removed macKeeper, as well, since a techie friend told me that could be the cause. Nothing so far has worked. When the problem first happened, it seemed to only happen in Chrome. Google voice calling out worked fine in safari, for about a day or so. Now I cannot call out from any browser. I can, however receive calls, and make calls within the video hangout.

New Problem Establishing Video Chats

Hello, several days ago I had a problem with connecting with people via iChat AV, I posted on the boards and the advice I received seemed to fix the problem. That post is at the following link:

I copied the error details, but stupidly I list them when I copied the URL above. So I'll do my best to explain the problem.
After checking my streaming spead and changing the settings for Quicktime Streaming, and setting Bandwidth limit to none, and after both myself and a friend I talk to online re-downloaded an update with the combo installer the video conference worked fine the first time.
After that, though, it stopped working. What puzzles me is that I found a test account on AIM (appleu3test03) and both of us are able to establish a connection with it, yet neither of us are able to establish a connection with each other.
I'm sorry I don't have the error details, however I'm about 90% sure it was a -8. Any help you all could offer I would great appreciate, and if you need any more info, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I'm not entirely sure, I could get that information from the guy I can't connect with for his, but my grad school offers all students free wireless, and I just use their network. So I don't have any idea what kind of modems or routers they use. However, I know they have Linksys routers all around several of the buildings, granted that's probably not helpful at all as far as this goes.
What confuses me especially is that video chatting with this one particular person (and for that matter everyone else I chatted with) worked fine until about 2 weeks ago. After changing the streaming speed it worked a couple more times, and then I reverted back to error messages again with no discernable differences as far as software or changes to the computer itself.
I do, however, now have error details if that helps at all, I will post them below. Thanks to all for your continuing help.

Can you video-chat with more than one friend at a time in new Hello?

Simply wondering if a group of people can video-chat together at same time, or just one-on-one?

It is currently only possible to have a peer to peer connection with one other computer.
To connect with multiple computer you would have to connect via a dedicated server and that is currently not possible with WebRTC.

i once was able to video chat with my friend and he did not have a mac, he had a pc, now i try to video chat with him again and it keeps giving me this error and it wont let me connect, my camera works fine, i can see myself but i just cant connect.... i told one of my friends and he tried to fix it but it didnt work, im afraid he might have messed something up, can someone help me? thanks!

I want to video chat with people on Facebook or MSN who are not using an apple device.

I Have been trying to video chat with friends and family using my ipad 3 but they do not have apple devices.
WHat does anyone suggest for an app to link to my Facebook and/ or msn account in order to be able to video chat with them?

It sounds like Skype would do well. It has no direct connection to Facebook or MSN, but that's OK ... as long as they use Skype as well.
Skype is now a Microsoft product, so it's related to MSN in some sense.

I can't video chat with iChat people in Messages...

I have Messages on OS X 10.8 but my friend has iChat still so i made an AIM account to chat with her. This worked. But now i can't video chat with her. We can both send invites to video chat but the other person cannot accept/see them. All that happens is the camera turns on...

All the Google IDs I know that work are in the form of [email protected] of [email protected]
Both these types are Google Mail IDs
I know of other names that look like [email protected] bit these are not Mail Accounts and do not work with the Google Talk servers (talk.google.com as seen in iChat Preferences > Accounts > Server settings for a gmail account name)
A random set of character sand numbers and that ending sound more like a Google Chat room rather than his ID.

i can have a video chat with anyone with a mac, but weneveri try to conenct to anyone else with a web cam it says there is a conenction problem. whats wrong? the version of i chat that i have is ichat av 3.1.8. please help! what do i do?

The problem is that there is no standard for audio/video that everyone uses.
Each IM provider has decided to use their own method of doing it, and they're all incompatible with each other.
It's possible to use iChat on Mac OS X to do an audio/video chat with someone using Windows, but only if that person is using the AIM protocol in either the AIM client or Trillian Pro.
The method that is generally recommended here for cross-platform audio/video chat is Skype. I don't like recommending them because of their misleading practices, closed proprietary protocols, and the fact that they treat Mac users as second-class citizens (and Linux users even worse), but for the moment they are probably your best bet.
WWDC is in a month, so after that we'll know whether Apple has added additional protocols or changed their methods for doing audio/video in Leopard's version of iChat. Personally i'm hoping for full support for both Jingle and SIP (open) standards, which will allow communication with Google Talk users on Windows and VoIP (soft)phones on every platform.

How can I video chat with someone who uses web based yahoo?

Not long ago I purchased my first Mac (New MacBook Pro 2.53GHZ); last Summer I also purchased a MacBook Pro for my daughter. Everything works great (like driving a formula one Porsche after grappling with a battered pick-up truck (meaning Windows) for many decades; cannot imagine ever going back. But, there is one issue that I have not been able to solve and for which I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice. I am familiar with ichat and with AIM (my daughter uses it all the time). However, the vast majority of people with whom I communicate via IM live in parts of the world where very few people have even a computer at home much less residential internet access. As a result, near all of the folks I would be chatting with have to use public computers (internet cafes, libraries, etc) and obviously they cannot install AIM or anything else on those public computers. About 90% of them use the web based yahoo messenger which can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection (most of the rest use MSN). My question is this: I know how to do video chat in ichat but ichat does not support yahoo. How can I do video chat with someone who is using web based yahoo on a public computer that has a USB web cam? I was able to do this on my old PC which had a plug in web cam but do not know how it might work on a Mac. Should I install yahoo messenger on my MacBook Pro and will that work for me?. I know about some other Mac compatible chat clients such as Admiun but as far as I can tell none of them support video chat or in some cases yahoo. Perhaps I am overlooking something. I would be very grateful for any suggestions or advice in this matter. Thanks to anyone who reads this post and has any helpful info.

I think there are Mac compatible MSN clients that will do video, (i.e. aMSN) Also, Microsoft plans on releasing an updated version of Messenger for Mac soon.

GoogleTalk does have a browser based video chat, but your friends would need to install a browser plug-in. (which I would assume that can't do either)
The best option is Skype, but also requires an install on their end (I would think that the internet cafes would/should have this available)

Ichat no audio on video chat with snow leopard

Hello,
I am having an issue where there is only one way audio when doing a video chat with those using snow leopard. If I start the video chat, the other person can hear me and I cant hear them. If they start the chat I can then hear them but they can not hear me. This was not a problem prior to upgrading to snow leopard (both of us). I can video chat fine with those who have not upgraded to snow leopard.
Audio chats alone work fine with these people.
I have tried changing bandwidth settings in ichat on both ends, enable 32 bit mode, checked the sound preferences, etc and nothing helps. We are not running any third party apps that have been mentioned to interfere with ichat.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions..

Also cap iChat in iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps
There is some evidence that it is the iChat Buffering.
iChat tries to buffer the Video to match changes in the Internet Speed.
Now that iChat 5 "sees" the whole of your Internet Connection (or your Buddies if they are on Snow Leopard) there can be bigger differences with a 1% slow down.
There may also be a larger difference in what your Buddy can now stream to to you as iChat is Processor/Bandwidth dependant on how big and how many frames a sec are sent/Received. (your Buddy, or your to your Buddy, may well be able to overwhelm the other).

HELP !! Trying to video chat with a friend I haven't seen in 23 years.

I'm getting the "insufficient bandwidth" error when trying video or audio chat. PowerMac on my end, new iMac on the other end. My friend has successfully done video chat with a friend overseas so it seems that her end is fine. I do have a Linksys WRT54GS (ver 2.0) router and have read a lot about the issues there.
Here's my situation. First of all, when I video conf from my PowerMac to my iMac over our home network (Linksys router), no problems at all. Video and audio are great. I know it's different when going outside my home, but at least that is working. What I'm trying first is just disconnecting the router altogether and running my cable modem direct to the PowerMac. I have not had the chance to test this with a "live" chat partner. I've used "[email protected]" and the video works but no audio (does this mean anything?). In fact, I get the same result whether I go through the Linksys router or direct to the cable modem using this test.
I've done the following so far:
1. Bypassed the Linksys and going direct to the cable modem (I'm going to keep it this way until I get it to work, then I'll mess around with the router).
2. Set streaming preference for Quicktime to 1.5Mbps.
3. Tested my bandwidth at Speakeasy (6.8Mpbs down; 480kbps up)
4. Verified under iChat Preferences that bandwidth limit is set to NONE, microphone is set to iSight, and sound output is set to Line Out (since I have external speakers.)
5. All software is updated to the latest versions.
6. Verified that the mac's firewall is off.
Granted, as I said, I haven't been able to do a test with a live chat partner yet, but as I described above, the test with appleu3test01 acts exactly the same with or without the router so I'm skeptical that my live chat is going to work even with the router gone.
Can anyone help? For now, I just want to get this working without the router.

In case it's helpful to anyone, my iChatAV video chat appears to work just fine going through my Linksys WRT54GS v2.0 (with latest firmware upgrade) with no special settings for port openings or the like. In addition, the Linksys firewall is enabled (but not the Mac's firewall). The only change I made was to set Quicktime streaming at 1.5Mbps versus Automatic. However, I was not able to do an adequte test before I made this change, only after, so I don't know if this setting was necessary.

I would like to set up a video chat with my 87 year old uncle near Edinburgh Scotland and my 88 year old Mother in the US.
I plan to have her over for the chat as a surprise.
My Uncle has a PC - (connect speed unknown.) He is partially capable of setting up his end, but may not know enough to get started.
He sent me a site to download MicroSoft messenger 6.02 for Mac which I did just to have but prefer the iChat route.
I have a new MBPro 2.4ghz with an iChat name ready to go, I believe.
I have a Granddaughter in Kansas with a new MacBook that I would like to set up with as well. I can think of so many possibilities with this new tool.

I would tend to agree with Defcom on this.
Trying to sort out any contact with iChat to MSN/Live Messenger and explaining all the limitations would detract from the people involved enjoyment.
Also the other options of a Mac based and Video capable application would also take some explaining and have limits (no Audio)
In this case Skype can be downloaded for PC and for Mac from the Links Defcom gave and requires little in the way of setting up.
For purists reading this.
1) iChat can talk to PCs if the PC is also using a AIM (AOL Instant Message Client) such AIM for PC or Trillian.
2) There are Applications (effectively still in beta) that can at least Video (moving pics only) to MSN on a PC that can be downloaded for the Mac.

Is there any way to use Jabber or other means to establish a video chat with an MSN Messenger user?
Alternatively, does anyone know if Virtual PC for Mac supports video chat with windows computers?

There is a beta application called Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X that is an MSN Server client.
However, please note that the Mercury Messenger Webcam / Video Conference Support section, which I quote, in part, includes the following:
Video-conferencing is supported on Mac OS X, however it is receive-only, due to an incomplete JMF library for Mac OS X. The feature is still relatively new, and so some issues may occur in use.
Although Mercury Messenger (beta) will connect to the MSN Server, those comparing it with iChat AV's capability should certainly study the sections about the limitations and known issues.
If you get Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X working, please post back and let us know what you think of it.

VPC for Mac does not support Firewire video, so it cannot use an iSight for video. Sorry, but I have not seen anyone post a method of using VPC that rivals the performance of using the same application on a Windows PC.
Also, VPC with the current version of Windows is so expensive that, at least where I live, it is often cheaper to buy a used, and sometimes a new, PC to run your PC software.
If you really MUST use PC software, I suggest running it on a PC.

Video Chat with Macbook Pro and Macbook

Hi,
IM have a problem with video chatting with my macbook pro, all my internet connections are fine, my camera is fine, and so is my audio. I can start video chats with my friends who have regular laptops that have windows xp/vista over aim. I just cant seem to get it started with my cousin who has a macbook. Can any one please help me? I've been struggling for a long time.

As to where they are on your device is anybody's guess as different manufacturers put them in different places.
Some like Netgear put them on the WAN page of the set up pages.
Linksys includes them in the Firewall in a tab called Security
Netopia included them as part of High and Medium settings of the firewall.
Some have them in "Intrusion Detection"
Some in a separate item in advanced.
The list goes on.....
If you tell us the device we may be able to pin it down further.
