First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.

And once you get Mac OS X 10.6 installed, update it to at least 10.6.6 which was the first version to include the Mac App Store (the latest version is 10.6.8). The DVD you get will almost certainly be only 10.6.3. You can update from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 via Software Update, or you can download a standalone Combo updater (Support tab above, then Downloads).

This unit would be light-years from being in the same league as one that could run Snow Leopard 10.6, but if it runs OK and you have the original software discs, cords, any accessories and box, it may have value. Perhap as a backward compatible unit to use older OS 9.2.2 & before applications. With Tiger 10.4.11 it would be a bit slow, and modern browsers are limited or nearly extinct. Maybe TenFourFox browser and older SeaMonkeyPPC versions.
Usually a host will edit the serial numbers from posts, for several reasons. However given a vintage hardware item that is essentially obsolete (see mactracker.ca database download) there isn't a great risk. But they usually remove those numbers when noticed, regardless of the model/year.

For a look at other newer possibilites, later Mac portables appear at Apple Store> Special Deals> Mac, online; they tend to be fairly new, include a warranty, software, etc.
For something that could run Snow Leopard, in restored repaired but used condition an authorized company that fixes them for a living & offers a guaranty, may be a place to look. A comparison site to get an idea online may be wegenermedia.com, they sell repaired Macs, too. Some may not include install-restore discs, so if you contact a reseller of previously-owned hardware, ask about all those items you'd need; then compare.

So, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6.6 (minimum) in order to have access to the App Store.

Can't Get Mac App Store Notifications Working

I've noticed recently that I've stopped seeing the red notification icon pop-up on my Mac App Store dock icon as it should be doing. I also haven't seen any Mac App Store notifications pop-up in the Notifications Center for quite some time as well.
However, if I open the Mac App Store, it acknowledges available updates and shows the red icon at that point. Once available updates are installed, the red icon dissapears as expected.
I've confirmed this issue does not occur in a new user account and I've tried, with no success, to remove the App Store .plist files from my user library folder, from both the Preferences folder and the Cookies folder, then restarted the computer.
I'm wondering if there is some other settings file somewhere that could be affected in some way and causing this issue.
Any suggestions?

if your boot volume is listed.

Did you delete by dragging it off of the Dock? If so, open the Applications folder and drag the App Store application bundle back onto the Dock.
Or if you deleted the App Store application bundle by going into your Applications folder and deleting it there, then look in your Trash folder. If the Trash has not been emptied, you can drag the App Store bundle back to the Applications folder. Then (after you've dragged it to the Applications folder) drag the icon back onto the Dock, if you want the application in the Dock.
If you've deleted the App Store from the Applications folder and have subsequently emptied the trash, then you'll want to download the 10.6.8 Combo updater from Apple, and apply the installer to your system. That will reload all of the pieces of OS X that have been updated since 10.6. The App Store will be loaded into the Applications folder and into the Dock for you.
OS X updates come in two general formats: Delta updates, and Combo updates. Delta updates contain just changes from the previous release. The Combo updates are cumulative, and contain all changes from all of the delta updates.
Get your OS X backups going, too. Apple's Time Machine does a good job here and is both free and easy to use, though there are other options. Either Time Machine via a directly-connected disk, or (particularly nice for laptops) via a network-connected disk such as an Apple Time Capsule. Don't think I really needed your reminder in hindsight did I? You can't help.. don't bother posting. That simple. What exactly an Apple guarantee is supposed to do for me is anyone's business with a simple problem of an app (program)_ needing to simply be reinstalled and me already having reiterated that I haven't done a Time Machine backup.. when people go to the trouble of being honest, they do not need unhelpful comments like yours.
Perhaps you should get my problem in perspective. The rest of the OS is working perfectly fine and should not need to be updated anyway.
And yes... Mountain Lion is out dated... if only I could update to Maverick that issue would be resolved.
FYI: Before issuing a "I hope this doesn't come across as Smart Alec in future," response in future could I just advise that it generally means the person issuing it is about to deliver a Smart Alec comment.

I should have internet connection from the Reinstall screen. My Network connection is set up and working perfectly. I expect that much tow work.

Hopefully, you saved a copy of that ill-designed installer which deletes itself during the installationi process, necessitating wasting resource DLing it over and over again. Sheer madness and toatlly anit-green in behavior.
