I was going through the same hassle with a Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere combination box from Office Max. The receipt said that it was activated, but the numbers on the receipt and on the box were the wrong length. I finally found the 24-digit Redemption Code on a card mixed in with the other printed materials inside the box. I activated the Redemption Code through my online Adobe account and received the Serial numbers for both Photoshop and Premiere with no more problems.

I have the serial number for Photoshop Elements 5 and need a way to download software.

Unfortunately, if you've never installed it, adobe has no record of your serial number. Serial numbers for bundled products are sold in great batches, and the buyer (Epson, in your case) has responsibility for them. You would need to get in touch with Epson.
If you have installed and registered PSE 6, go to adobe.com and look on the right side of the page for My Adobe. By working through the links there you should be able to find the record of the serial number you registered.

My original is v 1.1 (now running 2.x) & I'm double stuck - trying to migrate to a new PowerBook and upgrade to 3.0 - both tasks needing the original serial number.
